Bob Fraser Master Locksmiths always makes correct key copies. I've had very good experiences in the past. Big thanks to Carmen! She always cuts the keys correctly. In addition, she provides excellent customer service. Recently, I went to a local Home Depot to get two copies of keys. The only reason I went was the convenient location. When I came home to try them out, both keys were incorrectly cut. Brought them back for a refund. Of course, I headed right out to Bob Fraser's to get copies. (Which I should've done in the first place.) When I came home, the keys fit correctly. The 2 keys came to $6.40. (The 2 keys at Home Depot were over $8.00). This lock place must be your first stop for lock needs. I was just there today getting an additional car key and car remote door lock/unlock and found the experience fast and they had in stock the key parts and could do the programming to the car to make that happen. I'm definitely stopping by here for car related keys as the prices were fair and was in and out easily. Joseph got back to me right away, understood my needs, explained what he would do, how much it would cost, etc. We scheduled a date, and Joseph showed up right on time. He went above and beyond with the installation, somehow managing to complete it without any of the previous hardware marks and door paint outlines visible. I had a door knob that needed to be fixed as it had fallen off the door. When I called to schedule the appointment, I asked what the minimum would be to have it fixed and was told there was a $34 service charge. When the locksmith showed up, he was able to fix it in under 5 minutes and didn't even have to use new parts. When he came back with the bill, it was $110!!!!! I asked him why this was as I was told on the phone it was $34. He said that was the service charge, and he was charging me $69. He told me the minimum they can charge is $34 + $46 (half hour labor) or $80. Then why not say that on the phone. I told him that they should tell you that on the phone and he told me he is a sub-contractor and doesn't represent them. I explained that to me, he does represent them as the customer, but he disagreed. After I paid and he left, I decided to drive over to the establishment to talk to them face to face. As I was there explaining that is deceitful to not let the customer know that it will be a min of $80 and letting them know that the locksmith told me he didn't work for them or represent them, guess who walks out? The locksmith who doesn't represent them or work for them. What a sham!!! They charged me the $80 min instead of the $110, but even after I told them to just be honest and tell the customer it is a minimum of $80 if the problem gets fixed, they didn't seem to care. They worked very fast, and showed up minutes after I called them after getting locked out. The price is $100 for getting locked out, which I definitely feel is steep for a 4 minute job, but I was prepared to pay that amount since I read other reviews. A few months ago we bought new interior doors & needed to order decorative knob sets for bedrooms. The ' technician' came to give estimate for 3 doors for installation of new knobs & privacy sets. Since the reviews I had read on another site were very good,I thought I would use them. I also had him work on several door jams & original locksets because they weren't closing/ clicking shut. He proceeded to chisel out part of the brass frame plates,leaving them looking broken & messy. Nit professional at all. I expected him to offer suggestions on correcting the squareness of the frame/ door,tightening up hinge screws,etc. However,the new owners/ staff are rude,rushed & not experts. I ordered the new sets,paid for them in full,waited a few weeks & after delivery & not liking them,I was told I would be charged a 20% restocking fee to return/ exchange them. Very bad customer service,too few employees to run business + not upfront with business charges,nit knowledgable. Run to another business! The previous owner,whose name is on the shop,should remove any connection with current owners His name & reputation are now muddied. read more

Three months ago, I called up Bob Fraser Security Center as a tenant of mine was experiencing his lock jamming, preventing him from opening his front door. Fraser had a locksmith "repair" the lock and charged me $250. Fast forward to this past Sunday night: that so called repaired lock jammed again. I attempted to call Bob Fraser on Monday, but the phone just kept on ringing. You would think a locksmith would have an answering service for emergencies or the very least an answering machine on the days that they are closed. Low and behold, I called another locksmith that was well reviewed on Yelp, and he disabled the broken lock, and installed a brand new lock for $200. So let's review: Bob Fraser did a piss poor job and cost me $250 to repair a broken lock that broke again in 3 months. Also, good luck getting someone on the phone if you need help. I have spoken to someone in the shop before and he was a mean, rude, old man who should probably be sent away. Do yourself a favor and use the Yelp reviews to find a locksmith in Montclair. It'll save you money, time, and will keep you from dealing with tools like Bob Fraser. read more

I just tried to have a set of keys made and while paying was told that there was a minimum of $10 for credit cards. That's fine. But it would have been nice to know that before I walked 20 minutes. No where is that posted online and it is not posted anywhere in the store. I called before walking up as asked about having one set of keys made and was not informed about their minimum. Maybe a company that deals in small dollar amounts should tell people their credit card policy. Will not go back and will not recommend to others. The woman at the front desk was quite rude and told me "there is a bank across the street." Sure, let me pay more in ATM fees than the coat of the keys. read more

Prompt, courteous service. Was recommended by another locksmith who couldn't fix a mortise lock broken by our house painter. Turns out the painter three away a small piece of the lock out of frustration. The new owners at Bob Fraser inherited tons of old inventory and were able to repair the lock with another part. Really creepy. Really deceitful. It started out well. The saleslady helped me find the custom hardware that I needed for an old door. She offered to have the install tech come to my house to verify that it was the right hardware because it was high priced hardware. The tech knew his stuff, and found the right lockset to fit. I almost fainted when he wrote up the price. Insanely expensive. About four times the price of the best hardware at Home Depot. The tech said he'd waive the $250 install fee (still insanely expensive). I wanted to support a local business, so I paid the invoice that he wrote up. When the tech showed up with the hardware (a week late), he did a good job installing it. Then, he gives me another invoice for $250 plus tax for a total of $271!!! I reminded him that he waived the install fee. He tells me he waived the $250 fee for SHOWING UP to LOOK at the door! I couldn't believe what he was saying. I paid the money just to get him to leave. Here's the creepy part: The guy wouldn't leave. He just stood there staring at me after I paid. I told him five times in very clear terms that he needed to leave my house immediately. He just stood there staring at me like a serial killer. I'm 6'4" and 200 lbs. Its really unnerving to have someone half your size just stand in your living room staring at you after they've extorted $271 from you. I had to throw his folder out the door and threaten to call the police to get him to leave. And this is a guy who has a key to my house!!! I strongly caution anyone in the neighborhood from doing business with Bob Fraser Locksmiths. Don't let them into your home. In response to your slander about me assaulting your technician: Spend more time providing accurate and truthful proposals and you won't need to spend so much time cleaning up your online reputation. read more

Beware! This business is under new ownership and the new owner is deceitful. I needed a new mortise lock and matching deadbolt. It took two visits for the job to be completed. The first time the tech showed up with the right mortise lock and a deadbolt which was not the one I had picked out to cover the oversized hole in my door. I told the owner over the phone that I would pay for the mortise lock but that I wanted him to order the right deadbolt. After trying to convince me that he couldn't get the one I wanted in the right color (satin nickel, which the vendor had both in the catalog and online) he finally seemed to agree. However, when the tech returned he brought back the same, wrong deadbolt and a cheap-looking plate to cover the hole which did not even match the deadbolt. The only reason the job was completed on the second visit was that I had gone out in the interim and bought a deadbolt that would work. The labor charge was more than they quoted over the phone, plus they tacked on a $35 service call fee which they had never mentioned. Will never use them again. read more

Just had a service call to my home to fix a Mortise lock that another locksmith came out & charged me $85 and couldn't fix the lock, Bob Fraser Locksmith came out fixed the lock after the lady in the office took her time asking me what type of lock I have and only charged me $65 labor & $35 service call and the technician fixed my lock! My husband and I were very pleased with the service. The locksmith who worked with us was very pleasant, clean-cut and knowledgable.
