Newly renovated restaurant with 2 booths for seating. I came on a hot day and the AC wasn't really running well so it was still quite hot inside. I ordered the falafel sandwich and it comes with falafel smashed, tomato, lettuce, onion, and hummus. It was nothing special or notable; tastes just as expected! We asked for hot sauce on the side expecting something like the red sauce from halal carts but sadly it tasted just like Tabasco. I felt the strong vinegar taste did not pair well with the Mediterranean food. It was decent for the value but I'm not sure I would necessarily look to come back if I was in the area. Service was decent and food came out quick.

Smiley's Cafe was a fantastic shop with great hospitality! They were extremely accomodating and gave us some extra sauce when splitting the beef gyro platter. The food tasted great, and the overall experience was fantastic!

Very good Mediterranean spot. Good portions, prices and service. Got the veggie platter which basically had the entire menu and was perfect portions to share (2 of us). The baba ganoush is probably my favorite portion of the meal and version I've had. It's smoky but not too smoky. I find sometimes it goes overboard with the smoky flavor and that wasn't here. It still had lots of flavor but good balance. The service was very sweet. She threw in an extra pita for us to split evenly (normally it's 3 pitas) and even made extra pineapple lemonade for us to have. Definitely would come back here!

The couple that run Smiley's are so nice!!! They make you feel welcome and appreciated! They make a great strawberry banana smoothie and a great falafel sandwich. Its more of a wrap than a pocket... so that was a change from the usual me. Prices are reasonable! Now I need a reason to be in Philadelphia again.

I just had the absolute best Falafel salad I've ever had. The salad had fresh ingredients and the falafels that were hand made!

Thank you Smileys Café for the best Falafels I ever had. You and Mrs Loubna are kind and sweet. I really loved the smoothies as well. You will forever have my business!!!

My buddy and I were coming back from Philly on our bicycles and rode through Manayunk looking for foods like falafels and shawarmas. Although you wouldn't know it from the name, this was the spot! They had some sidewalk signs out and that was they key. Otherwise, we would have rode by unawares. Manayunk is trendy and fashionable these days and I am sure the upscale restaurants are great. But, we just wanted some street food and not spend a ton of cash. The mom working there had her kids with her and we were able to chat with her sweet 6 year old boy. Family-owned restaurants are the best. Good home cooking. I had the beef shawarma. It was delicious. I also had a strawberry/banana smoothie that really hit the spot. It was just what the Dr. ordered for a long bike ride from Valley Forge Park to Philly and back. There may be some history to the Smiley's name that they are holding onto. It might be wise to rename it something more contextual to the food. The six year old's name means "Blooming Flower" or something like that in English. That'd work. The spot is not upscale. Just great food at a nice price. When we hopped back on our bikes (we were allowed to bring them into the small dining area because it was after the lunch rush) the older gentleman behind the counter thanked us several time for coming in. Our pleasure for sure!

Best Thing I Ever Ate: Hummus, Lamb Shoulder…read more This was my second visit to Zahav while visiting Philadelphia. I'm glad I had visited before because I knew the importance of pacing myself. I knew I could only enjoy a little knibble of each of the delicious salads that were initial placed on the table. I think I ate all the twice-cooked eggplant. It was so good! The hummus is honestly the best I've ever had, and the laffa bread is such a yummy accompaniment. I had to stop myself from eating too much! I tried the Phyllo-wrapped Haloumi. It was ok, but I liked my dad's Freekeh Arancini better. The Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder is the reason I had to pace myself. This is also one of my favorite lamb dishes that I've ever had. The greens are a nice accomaniment. I didn't care for the crispy rice, and it was the only thing I didn't like. I got the Pecan Konafe for dessert and it was like an exotic pecan pie. Love this! The honey ice cream was so refreshing after a big meal. I left very happy.

I came to know…read moreabout this restaurant through Eater's "Mise En Place" video series on YouTube and was struck by the care and contemplation put into each dish. The second I knew I was visiting Philly, I set a reminder on my phone to vie for a reservation. We got a 9:30pm reservation, which was late for my usual dining habits but absolutely no question worth the extra few hours to build up and appetite and anticipate going to such a renowned restaurant. We were met with a beautiful dining room and kind, passionate people at Zahav, especially our bartenders, who made our experience a true EVENT, describing each dish to us even as we were making decisions on the tasting menu, and vouching for the fact that we MUST try the halloumi, which ended up being my favorite dish! Wow, the care that is put into the craft of this food is unreal. Zahav is a true celebration of cuisine. We started with the laffa bread being served straight out of the fire with accompaniments which were absolute flavor bombs, especially the eggplant and pickled cabbage. The bread was warm, soft, and so flavorful in itself but made even better by the hummus-tehina, which was perhaps the smoothest I've ever had. The Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder fell right off the bone, and the Amba-braised Greens and Crispy Persian Rice were side dishes that felt like main events in themselves -- the crispiness of the rice perfectly complemented the pomegranate sauce of the lamb. This was the perfect celebration dinner, and Zahav quickly made it to the top of my list of places that live up to their hype and go above and beyond in the kindness realm.

Ordering is made simple, you choose one thing from the grill, like spicy lamb kofte, chicken shishik, or shawarma-spiced cauliflower, and let the restaurant handle the rest. You then learn why everyone is so cheery--the salatim is endless! More than 10 veg-friendly entry dishes, served in these small stainless-steel cups, a big bowl of fresh hummus and pitas just out of the oven. When you run out, just order more. Whatever is left over, you take with you. It's all included in the price you see next to the item from the grill. The salatims all come out together but eat too much and you'll be too full for the main; eat too little and you'll feel like you got ripped off, with no time to really enjoy them. The restaurant paces out the courses nicely and the salatims go well with the mains so they leave everything out for you. The dessert was last, a soft serve ice cream for each guest--good, but not the thing to visit Laser Wolf for. Couple things worth knowing: The price of the grill items are shocking at first, before you realize how much is included. For instance, the chicken shishik or eggplant are each close to $40. But I promise you won't leave hungry. My partner and I ordered just one thing from the grill, the restaurant adds something like $23 to the bill because everything else remains the same. Unlimited salatims and a dessert for each. It then feels like one of you is paying $23 for the salatims and dessert, which is a lot in my opinion, but the fact that the restaurant allows (even encourages) you to take the salatims to go and even refills the portion for you, I think makes the price reasonable. There are also other items to order à la carte. We got the halloumi for an additional $16 and it was excellent, probably the best item of the night. There's a 20% service charge included. The restaurant has this written in a big box on the menu and says their employees are paid at least $15/hr. I'm usually against forced tips but I strongly support folks earning at least $15/hr. The service was excellent all around, timely, friendly and attentive and deserving of every penny. In the end we paid just over $100 for 2 people, including the service charge, and left very full and very happy.

Almyra - I happened to walk by it a few weeks ago, I didn't know it was there. I thought, 'looks very nice, I'll have to try it'. The restaurant, which features 'modern Greek' is part of the Estia Group, which includes 7 restaurants - 3 of which are in Philly (Estia and Pietro's are the other two). I went for dinner this evening on a Wednesday, and there was a good crowd - the restaurant is quite large, and it's decorated beautifully. I started with three of the Spreads - Smoked Eggplant, Beet, and Hummus. It was wonderful trying these 3 - I spread them on the pita and crispy rice crackers - and tried them separately - spoonful by spoonful, to really taste the differences. The Edamame Hummus has a unique flavor and texture with tahini and garlic. The Beet features roasted beets blended with labneh and garlic and topped with pistachio and feta. The Smoked Eggplant with peppers and balsamic rounds out the 3 with a deep, smoky flavor and a soft, smooth texture. I always look for 'classic' Spanakopita these days, but rarely find it. The dish at Almyra was labeled 'Spanakopita Manti' - I asked my server, what that was. She said it was a favorite of hers, a fried 'flower shaped' pastry filled with blended spinach and feta, served with tzatziki and leeks. I ordered them and they were heavenly - lightly battered, crispy fried 'flowers', with a creamy spinach center, that tasted exactly like spanakopita should. I dipped every bite in the creamy tzatziki and thoroughly enjoyed the appetizer! While pork is the most popular meat in Greece, lamb is a dish served on special occasions and holidays. I 'discovered' lamb in Greece, as I hadn't ordered it that often when I would go out to eat....specifically the lamb chop. Almyra has a great lamb chop! It's seared on the grill - and I do mean seared - the deep char definitely adds to the flavor. The 3 large chops are Australian lamb, herb marinated for days highlighting the flavor of the meat. They are seasoned with sea salt, cracked pepper and olive oil for a tender finish. I like my meat pink inside - not red or rare. Cooking lamb chops medium to medium well is no small feat, yet the meat was cooked exactly the way I liked. They were tender and very juicy. These chops may have been some of the thickest I've had - and I made the 'mistake' of trying to eat them with a fork and knife. Wrong! If you order chops, you 'MUST PICK THEM UP' and eat them! What a difference!! The meat just came right off the bone and it enhanced both the texture and flavor! I'm not sure why eating them off the bone was so different, but I can't emphasize it enough - and, it's a lot more fun! Part of the treat when you order ribs are the 'layered potato fries' you get with them! These aren't your ordinary fries, in fact, they're really not fries - they are little potato masterpieces! The fries are prepared by thinly slicing potatoes and layering them to create a multi layered texture that rocks! They are truly a savory, rich side dish to the lamb chops! After such an epic dinner, I had to order dessert, and the Olive Oil cake immediately caught my eye. It was a two layered cake with a creamy custard like center and a citrus orange topping. It was light and moist, accompanied by a scoop of vanilla gelato resting on a bed of ground pistachio nuts! It was delicious and a wonderful ending to a great meal!
