We came super early, like 9:30 pm. Yeah. We got our free pass. Normally, it's $10 cover charge, which isn't bad because there is a huge dance floor with high tech lighting system and sounds system. It was totally worth every penny. Because we love to dance. We adore the music to our liking, more like in the 90's oldies. Yeah, we are older than most people on the dance floor. Thank goodness they didn't kick us out. I remember one night there was a huge group of young Asian guys came in around 10 pm. There were also many birthday celebrations around the seating area. Boy, I would love to sit on a cozy chair after dancing my ass off. Looks like they have some kind of VIP access. There were also girls and straight couples on the dance floor and around the lounge area. Oh, there is a cool patio on the side. Restroom was clean. Masking tape was still on the staircase. My biggest complaint with the old Eagle was the creaky floor. Varsity fixed it by laying industrial floating tiles. It's not for dancing. The acoustic quality was terrible. It sounded like a dance party at high school gymnasium. They put a scoreboard on the big wall where it used to be a painting with the former bar. Upstair bar is usually packed. Clientele was mostly younger crowd. They sang songs with the music it was playing while dancing. Varsity installed several TV monitors on every single wall. Not sure what they trying to create. Extremely gaudy. That's not what a video dance bar should look like. Ugh. Not sure if I want to come back. The downstairs bar and dance floor were so empty. I went there on a Friday night. They turned off all TV's around 12:30 am. I was watching a cricket game while dancing. WTF!! I don't have a good taste after that.

This Play Nightlife bar is located at the former Hamburger Mary's and Buddy's aka Kiki's on Grant Street of the Montrose Gayborhood. The entire complex has Hollywood neon sign on it. The left side is called Club Pause. The right side is called Play Nightlife. Together they are called Pause/Play (like on the music machine). On the weekends, Club Pause opens at noon and music starts at 10 pm. There are other activities like karaoke nights on Wednesdays and Thirsty Thursday etc. I'm usually here on Friday and Saturday nights after 11 pm. Saturdays seem to have a bigger crowd. Club Pause has bounce music by DJ Jimmy D on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a place to hang out and dance. I like to dance at Play Nightlife because the deejays are from the former Eagle Houston. CJ Fader was the resident deejay upstairs and DJ Jimmy Skinner was the resident deejay downstairs. Music is more danceable than South Beach Houston. There are not many parking spots up front. People usually park elsewhere and bar hop to Play from neighboring bars. There are 2 taco trucks in the parking lot. My favorite food truck Pixi Dust Houston is previously called Eagle Eats. That explains why I come to Play Nightlife more often than any other gay bars in the Houston's Gayborhood.

Going along for the adventure, I tried their pickle cocktail that was on the menu and it was honestly, terrible. While they do have a happy hour that goes until 8pm, the service this last visit just wasn't the best. The server who helped me told me it was his second day and was clearly struggling to keep up with the cocktail combinations, referencing his phone many times while preparing the drink. I ended up not liking this drink and brought it back to the bar with just one sip gone and rather than offering to make me another drink, they kept it on my bill. Ok, whatever. That being said, just before this happened, the couple in front of me went to pay for their bill, prepared drinks in hand, at 8:02pm and the bartender refused to honor the happy hour prices, just two minutes past the official end time. With these two instances, it seems like the priority is maximizing every dollar of profit rather than investing in the customer experience. Given the number of other original concepts in the area, I would pass.

WHAT HAPPENED? News reports say that the door staff refused to let a wounded young man into the club who was "pleading for help." Rumor has it that the door staff did nothing to help, telling them to keep it outside. Then, watched as the kid was stabbed to death, and allowed the guy to "calmly walk away." Yes, they called for help after it was too late -- at that point, there was no choice but to get involved. I mean there's a dead guy in your parking lot. What is wrong with our community? Why would anyone go to this club? Blur keeps us outside so that they can appear to have a line. They say that they let people in for free before a certain time, then pretend they are full so they can avoid letting people in. The door staff routinely treats everyone like it is a great privilege to be allowed into their club. We put up with this, probably for the same reason we consider "straight acting" to be a positive attribute. Now, a member of our community approaches the club, pleading for help. Is he let in? Nah, it's not their problem. Keep it outside, buddy. It's true -- they are under no legal obligation to help those in need. Of course, we're under no legal obligation to go to their club. Have some pride and self respect. Go to any of the other clubs in the neighborhood, where you are welcomed. Staff at every other club is interested in getting you IN the club, rather than keeping you OUT. The whole attitude of "I only want to go where I'm not wanted" should end right now. We are all valuable and deserve respect. We also deserve to be treated like a human being in our times of need. RIP Aaron. You deserved much better than this. Ewwwwww, HORRIBLE - GHETTO - JUST GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! First, on the weekends they pack people in there like a Can of Sardines. It is literally too crowed to get to the bar, patio or bathroom. What's the Point? You have to fight to get through the crowd. Seriously Uncomfortable. Forget trying to have a conversation with your friends because the music is ridiculously loud. Again, What's the point? Finally the worst part about this bar is the bartenders. One word to describe them, SHADY!!!! Each time that I have been to BLUR the I have been charged different prices for the same drink on the same night and it happens the same way. I have purchased a drink at the front bar first and then a second drink at the inside bar by the dance floor. Each time the second bartender at the bar by the dance floor has tried to charge me $3 - $4 mores more than the bartenders by the front door. Absolutely Bad Business. Avoid this place at all costs unless you're prepared to be scammed. The floors are dangerously slippery, often covered in spilled drinks and even vomit. We also weren't offered a refund after being kicked out and received no service. The white lady with purple hair who kicked us out was extremely rude and disrespectful. The way she spoke to us was completely unnecessary, and she made an already frustrating situation much worse instead of simply explaining what the issue was. She also recorded members of our group dancing without our notice, which I found uncomfortable. & I will admit that I became extremely frustrated and cussed at staff. I could have handled my frustration better. However, I still feel that the situation could have been handled much more professionally and respectfully, i genuinely felt like I was being treated unfairly. This was my first time at Numbers, and unfortunately it's not an experience that would make me want to come back at all.

The DJ was playing mostly Latin music with some rap mixed in. I didn't know some of the songs since I'm a gringo but there were some I did like Bad Bunny. And they played Danza Kurduro which is one of my favorite jams! While the dance floor wasn't big, a lot of people were dancing. While they have booths you can reserve and bottle service, we just ordered at the bar. A couple of annoying things here. They will run your card every time, you can't keep your tab open. I've seen other bars do this in EaDo and I don't get it. And they also automatically add 20% gratuity. Which is also screwed up.
