Spicy Octopus Roll
Maria N.

My daughter and I came for dinner close to 9 pm after a dance competition. The restaurant was packed and we didn't have a reservation. They were able to seat us quickly at the sushi bar, which was fine since we were starving and wanted to go back to our hotel right away. Portion sizes are large, especially the maki rolls. We had the salmon tartare and snow crab apps to start. The salmon tartare was delicious. The wasabi chips were a little overpowering. The snow crab was good, but nothing spectacular. The spicy octopus roll had good flavor, however each piece was so big that it was hard to eat without it falling apart and spilling. It would be better if it was just a little less wide. Overall, it was a nice dinner with good service.

My cousin and I had a lunch yesterday. The food was well prepared, tasty, great presentation of dishes, especially Sea Bass, Gulf Shrimp, and Exotic Bomba for a desert. Service was exceptional from the reception area - cheerful, polite, welcoming. The waitress was Exceptional - warm smile, caring, asking on time, and thoughtful. The place is elegant, clean, modern, smart decor, authentic. One of the memorable visits when all stars came along - very good service, tasty dishes, relaxing atmosphere.

We had a very nice lunch. I was so impressed by the vegetable bento -- it was inventive, unexpected and delicious. The grilled tofu was great tasting. And the fried vegetable rice also so good. Shiitake rolls tasty as well. Anyone can stir fry some vegs and call it a vegetable dish but someone assembled a veg bento that made me not even miss that there was no meat. My companions enjoyed their bento and sushi platter also. We all loved that little salad and those crispy fried (potatoes????). Lunch prices were very reasonable. Nice ambience, prompt service.

I love the variety offered by this sushi spot! My absolute favorites on the menu are the Mango Madness (the mango and cilantro flavors are incredible) and the Crispy Tuna Rice. I have come here for lunch during the week a couple times and the service is always quick, attentive and pleasant. We are repeat customers and will continue to enjoy this as one of our favorites.

So, so impressed with the quality of the food and service. This place is so unassuming & tucked away in a strip mall, but it was one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. Really stylish, clean & well maintained interior, friendly and quick service and DELICIOUS, outstanding food!!! Radu was a wonderful server and the entire experience was nothing short of amazing.

Blufish is a nice sushi place in the Vernon Hills area. The dining area is modern and relaxed. The staff has always been friendly to me here. I like coming here for the lunch specials! On this visit, we had the sushi blufish boat for 2 & the takoyaki. The fish was fresh! The sushi was decent. The takoyaki had good flavor. It was a nice weekday lunch here. I also like their udon and black dragon maki!

When I booked my reservation for Blufish Vernon Hills this Halloween for my anniversary, I hadn't visited for a couple of years. We love sushi, and we were pleasantly surprised with the freshness and quality of the fish. The ambiance is great as well. The music is good and the booths are comfortable and private. We decided to do the same for my spouse's birthday last night, December 13, 2025 at 6:00. We reordered the delicious sushi boat for 2, their house saketini and a Japanese beer. I tried a shrimp robata skewer as an appetizer, and he had some veggies tempura. Both were excellent. Once again, food was ample and delicious, and the service was friendly, but stretched a little thin. It seemed the bus persons were fewer last evening. However, the experience with the host staff made a special evening a bit unsavory. Like last time, I had reservations. We asked for a booth when they sat us at a small table at the window. They moved us to a larger table closer to the door where it was cold and drafty this frigid evening. They told us they held the booths for larger parties with reservations. I counted the 5 empty booths when we were finally seated. As we left, I looked over the booths reserved for larger parties, and all 7 or so of them had only two people. I felt like we were treated differently based on age or maybe because we were a gay couple. My husband mentioned to them on the way out how much we like the food and the ambiance, but how the seating policy made us feel like second class customers. He got no understanding, just a bunch of excuses about some vague policy that evidently lets the persnickety hostesses seat anybody anywhere they want. It's a shame. I'd like to go back, but but with that kind of door treatment, we'll seek out a more accommodating sushi restaurant next time.

First time ever to Blufish...which I found here on Yelp! Parking is abundant because this is in a huge strip mall complex and basically at the corner of Milwaukee and route 60. You get the elegant, cozy Vibe right as you walk into the restaurant because they have those outdoor space heaters right along the walkway. What a nice touch. The teenage hostesses were complete dingbats, and one of them was the same one I talked to on the phone when I tried to make a reservation earlier. They definitely could use training. Or common sense, or something. As quickly as we receded, however, a nice server, dennis, came over to our table. He was outgoing, knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and very accommodating. Our hot water with lemon and our green tea arrived so very quickly. The green tea was not the greatest I've had at recent because it's two other Japanese restaurants, but that's okay. It was hot and hit the spot. We ordered edamame, some sort of tofu, and seaweed salad. The edamame was standard edamame. The tofu was quite nice and I found the mixed seaweed salad to be piled abundantly, full of flavor, and with a variety of seaweeds which was really nice. My blue friend sashimi and octopus sashimi we're both excellent although not the world's greatest. What knocked it out of the park for me was the rainbow Tobiko, it was absolutely as delicious as it looked! All along, customer service was excellent. At 8pm on Saturday night, Blufish was so very busy but not overwhelmingly loud. For dessert, we shared what I think was a hazelnut sorbet truffle filled with cappuccino, and four mochi (two red bean and,two green tea), and both desserts were fabulous. All done, with tip, we were well north of $100. I found that to be expensive for the evening but we had a wonderful time.

Third time here since August, love everything here. Try the sashimi dinner (15 piece) this time, love it! Service was ok. Very lovely environment like always.

Unassuming sushi spot in a strip mall. But when you walk in, it feels like you are in an actual standalone restaurant. The restaurant is big, with two different dining areas, modern decor, and we were immediately greeted by the host staff. We went on a weekday during dinner, and only had to wait a few minutes. We requested a booth and they gladly accommodated us. Tables were clean, and our waitress came to introduce herself promptly. Huge plus is the bathrooms are so clean and smell good! We ordered: edamame- fresh, not frozen Tempura- Huge portions, perfect batter, not greasy Miso- very flavorful Salad- the dressing is drinkable; it is the best miso dressing I've had! Chicken teriyaki bento- plating and presentation was superb. Portions are big enough for two, veggie fried rice was quality, chicken was juicy with just the right amount of sauce, and another huge portion of the tempura with 2 huge shrimp included. California rolls that were included were top notch, and edible, unlike the cheap ones other places serve. Husband got the udon noodle soup- he said broth was good, another shareable meal. California Sunset roll- it was ok, the salmon and ingredients all tasted fresh Golden Ebi- I was ecstatic that they have a golden shrimp roll; this is one of the many reasons I'd come back. Total experience: My top sushi place in Chicagoland now! 10/10

I have been to this restaurant a few times, and every time, I have had a good experience. Blufish serves excellent Japanese food with good variety and delicious flavors. It is an upscale, elegant establishment that is a great part of Vernon Hills' restaurant scene. In my most recent visit, I tried multiple dishes that included sushi rolls, sashimi, chicken karage, sashimi salad, okonomiyaki, scallops, and a saké drink. All the food I had was super tasty and good. The fish was fresh and had big chunks or pieces. The okonomiyaki, which is a savory Japanese pancake with seafood, was super yummy. It was my first time having it. The scallops dish, whose name I can't remember, was unique in taste and very good. The sushi rolls were big, and I liked how they were created. We received good service. The ambiance is nice. The restaurant is on the pricier side, but you do get your money's worth. I highly recommend checking out this restaurant if you haven't been here before.

The ambiance is smart casual and offers different seating areas; a large dining room with cooking tables, a sushi counter with bar seating and a sports bar area, perfect for a casual after work sushi meal and cocktail. The prices are on par with similar Japanese restaurants (Benihana, Hanakawa) and they've kept several of their most popular entrées and maki on the menu for years and the quality is just as good as it has been for 30 years! Tsukasa is great for large parties and families and has plenty of parking on site.

I was setting up a birthday celebration for 2 of my friends and 1 of them picked his favorite…read morerestaurant and I was more than happy to set up the reservation. I called to make the reservation and the person was friendly and quick. 3 of 7 arrived early 3 more came in at the reservation time and 1 came 15 minutes late. Although he was late, the restaurant was patient with us. We were seated and we filled 7 of the 8 seats and we were told we had the entire table to ourselves. The server was nice and got waters and drink orders. After our drinks arrived she gave us a few more minutes to take our food orders. Once our food orders were taken it took a few minutes then our soup and salads arrived. The soup was really good. It had mushrooms and crispy pieces of tempura batter inside. The salad was delicious and the Japanese dressing was really good, the balance of fresh ginger, rice vinegar, and soy sauce. The lettuce was cool and crisp. I ordered the Garlic Shrimp Entree with an extra order of the Golden Shrimp and upgrading to fried rice is a must. The teppanyaki chef was great! He was friendly and did the typical tricks. He did flip the rice in a bowl 49 times in honor of the birthday boys. He tossed the broccoli to 4 of us and we were 3 for 4 with the birthday boys being 2 for 2. My garlic shrimp had a mound of garlic and cooked just right. If the chef doesn't have good timing, it can certainly be over cooked. The golden shrimp had that creamy tasty egg yolk on top of the shrimp which melted like butter. The fried rice is mixed with their teriyaki sauce which is the best I've ever tasted and is my favorite. Now when the garlic from the shrimp gets mixed with my fried rice it elevates it in my opinion. The grilled veggies were seasoned well and was cooked perfectly (not over cooked and still slightly crisp. The night ended with green tea ice cream which was creamy and delicious. Overall, great show my the chef, even better food and had a fun time catching up with the guys. If you want delicious food, come here, you will not be disappointed.
