We had a great time here. Showing up in the middle of a July thunderstorm we were met with a friendly and knowledgeable staff and other slightly damp patrons. The flights are wide-ranging and tasty. A friendly and social young man lending a hand in the tastings turned out to be one of the family winemakers. We had fun picking his brain about the wines and listening to the family story of the winery. They have many special events - concerts, showings of local artists, and they welcome guests to come and picnic in the spacious area behind the main facility. This is a wonderful spot without pretension. Homey and warm, if a bit off the beaten path, get there to appreciate Virginia wine and hospitality of a high caliber. read more

Thanks for pointing this place out Dave! We finally made it here the other weekend, and your are so correct. Their wines are really good and they do have more wines out now. They now have 4 whites, 6 reds and 2 desserts wines. The facility is a little on the small side, but the people are friendly. The grounds are very nice. They have some picnic tables and regular tables out back as well as a couple of tables out front. Remember that you are definitely out in the country, and the way the wind was blowing, there was that country smell in the air. As in farmland if you know what I mean. Nothing to make you leave, and we didn't notice it when we arrived, but when we sat out back we could tell there was a farm somewhere downwind. The wines were great and we had trouble trying to decide which ones to purchase. Several of their wines have won awards. They now have a Chardonnay, Viognier, Vidal Blanc, and the Trimanette for the whites. All were very nice. The reds were really good. Of course they had a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The Quartz Hill Red, and the Crooked and Weedy, were really good red blends. The QHR is a Cab Franc and Chambourcin blend which is really outstanding. The two dessert wines were Beau and Blue Ice. No complaints about these either. The view is breath taking. We recently came on an overcast day and it was still extremely beautiful. On top of the view my wife and I enjoyed the wines. I'm normally not a sweet or white wine drinker but I found their moscato wine really refreshing and very tasteful. We both loved their red dry wines. Bluestone Vineyards is a perfect little getaway from the Harrisonburg nestled in the farm lands of Bridgewater. We were greeted at the top of the hill in the manor by a quaint tasting room -- perfect combination of homey and practical. Our tasting guide was knowledgable but still down to earth -- definitely met us at our level. We went through the red wine tasting -- a reasonable $5 for 5 wine tasting and afterwards my girlfriend chose a glass of the merlot and I took a glass of the hearty port. The wine wasn't spectacular, but solid Virginia wine at a good price. What really gives this place 4 stars is the view. After grabbing our glasses, we sat in lounge Adirondack chairs looking out on the rolling hills streaked with winding country roads. If you're looking for well-priced and good quality VA wine with a great venue, this is the place for you! read more

My husband and I were visiting friends that live in Bridgewater and we stopped by around 4 pm on a nice Saturday afternoon. There were probably at least 10-12 cars in the lot, and it was fairly bustling in the (smallish) tasting room. We were immediately greeted and joined with another couple for a tasting. The regular tasting is $5 and the Reserve tasting is $7. We opted for the Reserve tasting, as it included a Cabernet and an icewine. We were surprised at how many wines Bluestone produces - there were 13 wines to be sampled that day. We started off with the whites, of which our favorite was the Vidal Blanc. Moving on to the reds, we were very pleasantly surprised with the Pinot Noir (which we usually don't like because they are too light), which had a respectable tannin content and nice flavor. We ended up getting a bottle of the Merlot, which, again, was better than most Merlots that we've tasted. The reserve tasting included a Cabernet Sauvignon that was very rich with moderate tannins. We also really liked the icewine, which to me, tasted almost of pears. Very nice! Overall, we were VERY impressed with the consistent quality of the wines at Bluestone. We went wine-tasting about a month ago along Route 66 to several VA vineyards, and Bluestone blows those out of the water by far. Some VA wines have that overly acidic/stringent aftertaste, but Bluestone's wines were excellent, and were consistently high quality. Bravo to the winemaker. Cannot wait to come back! read more

I took advantage of the beautiful day to make the drive from Northern Virginia to Bridgewater to visit Bluestone Vineyard. The setting is absolutely gorgeous, and I was able enjoy cozy seating by the outdoor fireplace. Friendly service and great wine added to the experience. Right now there is no wine tasting they want you to buy a three dollar sip of wine. Was unclear about buying flights or whatever to try it was very confusing and not very friendly. Went with a Wine member for his 90th birthday to buy him a few bottles and they wouldn't let us use his club membership even though he was there, the wine was for him. We just wanted to pay for it. So we walked out and didn't buy anything. So they lost about $100 sale and continued business. read more

Wonderful experience here!! The wine tasting we started with was wonderful -- My girlfriend and I did 5 red wines for $6 and 6 "reserve wines" (included red and white) for $9. Both were well worth it, and we loved wines from both. The advantage of the reserve, in my opinion, is that you get to experience two DELICIOUS white wines. Our favorites were the petit manseng (only slightly sweet white with a huge, satisfying body, one of the best whites we've ever had!!), cav sav, merlot (one the best merlots I've tried), and cadenza (blend of cav sav and petit verdot). We ended up buying two bottles, one to enjoy at the vineyard and one to take home. Bring a picnic and stay awhile to enjoy the amazing views outside!! read more

During a weekend visit to JMU, my wife and I made arrangements to visit the winery with our daughter and some of her friends. For most of them, they had never experienced a wine tasting. The staff totally accommodated our group of eight. They were expecting our visit and were patient with our group. Grape juice was served to the one not of age. For the rest of us, we tasted the white and red wines that were numerous and ranged from dry to sweet, which provided comical reactions from puckered faces to shouts of awesome from the girls. For the girls, the agreed-to favorites were the sweet white wines, especially the Blue Ice wine. For my wife who usually does not enjoy Chardonnay, she found those from Bluestone to be enjoyable. My favorites turned out to be the blended reds. Based on our experience, there is a wine for all preferences at Bluestone! We will be returning on future trips to JMU as the drive from campus to Bluestone is very easy. read more

Love this place !!!! We visited with some friends and we loved it. It was in the owners basement but it was SO well done. As a whole the wine was probably the best wine i ever had. As we drove up the hill to get to the tasting room, we were quite surprised to see vines that weren't pruned, an abundance of weeds, and not that many people... We walked into the tasting room and were hit by the same weird smell and immediately rethought our plans. However, we had gone this far, so why not taste? We opted for the reserve tasting, and while our server Raneé was great (immediately greeted us, super knowledgeable, and very sweet), we just couldn't find anything to match our individual palates. The majority of the wines made were definitely in the sweeter category. Disappointing for sure, but we hope to revisit maybe once things improve. read more

Reasonable priced wines ($20-ish) and the patio was perfect for sharing a bottle with friends with 180 degree beautiful views. We will definitely be back. Enjoyed a tasting with friends. They have a very different flights--I tried the dry whites. The wines were decent, with the Traminette standing out enough to purchase it. The tasting room is in the owners' home--it isn't as nicely decorated or set up as a lot of the other tasting rooms in the area but the staff is friendly and welcoming and they have some fun merchandise. It was a little too cold to sit outside, the deck and patios were nicer than the tasting room itself. Nice views and worth the drive. read more

We're so glad we stopped by Bluestone Winery. What was intended to be a quick tasting stop quickly turned in to a leisurely afternoon sipping delicious wine from the patio overlooking a stunning landscape. The grounds are beautiful (don't mind the construction, they're expanding and once you're past it you don't even know it's there) and there's no better view of the Shenandoah Valley. This is the part I miss most about living in Bridgewater! They are not pretentious like the other wineries in the area. They don't offer food which is actually good because you can bring whatever you want. We used to go on Friday nights when they have their events with cheesey cover bands (like being at a wedding haha), bottles of wine that are around 16-20 (which is cheaper than a bar who charges 6+ for drinks), bring your own seating, friends, and food. My absolute favorite wine of all time, not just from them, is their Crooked and Weedy. A sweet red. My mom enjoys their Beua white since she likes Moscato like wines. The setting is breath taking and the buildings are minimal so you can really take in the Blue Ridge Mountains and country side. Highly recommend! read more

We visited this winery when we were in town visiting my in-laws. It was a brisk day, so we ended up staying inside for a wine tasting. The tasting and indoor space was small, but I was thoroughly impressed with the one-on-one attention from the employees. They seemed to really know their stuff and were full of fun little anecdotes about the owners and the backstory of how this vineyard came to be. Would love to come back for live music. read more

I graduated from college near Bluestone Vineyard right when it was getting its start, and I have been hearing good things about it so my fiancee and I decided to check it out on a Saturday afternoon. The setting is lovely and picturesque, the view pretty much embodies the Shenandoah Valley -- natural and beautiful. When you go to the tasting room, there are four flights and you can elect to taste any two of the four flights. My fiancee and I are not wine drinkers, but we do love sangria and anything that is very fruity. We chose to do the fruity tasting. The people next to us decided to taste the reds and the whites. I noticed that the person pouring our wines had to read off of a paper to the man who chose to taste the reds, making me think she was new. This was confirmed when I barely got even a sip of the wines. I know this is a tasting, but when you cannot even taste the wines because the pour is so stingy? That's not really enticing me to buy anything. Nevertheless, I think that the moscato was good, so we bought it. Plus, we were really intrigued by it because I think the lady told us that Bluestone is the only vineyard in Virginia to make their own. Lastly, I am not really sure how I feel about the basement location of this, it was not really what I expected, kind of small and I just didn't feel like I was at a vineyard/winery just at a party at someone's house. My fiancee also had to use the bathroom while there and being that it is in the owner's basement, there is only one toilet. He opened the door to the bathroom and found a woman sitting on it, she had not locked the door. Once that happened, we ran out of there because it was embarrassing to say the least. I would say go for the views, do a tasting, and buy a bottle to support the cause, but I would head on down to other vineyards in the area for more of a traditional/classy winery experience. read more
