Beautiful scenery from the deck outside the winery.

My wife and I took local roads (33 to 810) from Massanutten resort near Harrisonburg and had a picturesque hour-long ride through Shenandoah National Park and the adjacent mountain valley to visit this winery in Crozet, pronounced crow ZAY. We opted for the quicker drive back to the resort via interstate (I64W to I81N). It was our first visit to that area, so the more leisurely ride was very enjoyable. I wouldn't recommend it in the dark or under harsh weather conditions as the roads, while mostly flat, were sometimes tight for dealing with oncoming traffic and windy roads. Mountfair offered a tasting of six bottles: two ciders, two whites and two reds, and we purchased one of each pair. The reds were theirs; the ciders and whites were from neighboring vineyards. We enjoyed and picked up a bottle of Potter's Craft Oak Barrel Reserve, which is made at Potter's Craft Cider in Free Union, Virginia. It is made in oak barrels used to make apple brandy, so it has a unique flavor. We purchased Knight's Gambit Chardonnay, which is made nearby near Whitehall, Virginia, not far from Lake Albemarle. It's a non-vintage (NV) wine (no year of vintage appears) but is a new offering for Knight's Gambit, according to a spring 2014 post on their Facebook page. And we bought Mountfair's Bonfire, which, like all of Mountfair's reds, is a blend. We tasted it then bought a bottle and bought two glasses to enjoy on the patio. I agree with previous posters that the wines are pricey. We spent over $90 for three bottles of wine. We didn't pay attention to the prices. The tasting specialists were pleasant to deal with, but it would have been nice to have some munchies for purchase to eat on the deck. Some folks bring a picnic lunch, we were told, so take note. The patio is covered and inviting and its view is wonderful - I posted a photo. They offer a wine club, but I wouldn't purchase wines without tasting them first from this vintner or its associated suppliers. We loved some but hated others. We went to Stinton's nearby and then to Crozet Pizza for dinner. As someone else suggested, you could easily make up your own tour in the Crozet area. I used Yelp to find wineries near Harrisonburg and made a list of places to try. Massanutten resort offers paid excursions to one particular local winery, but there are plenty more beyond that one.

Went to Mountfair today with another couple. The wine was good but there were also a lot of fruit flies that were kind if annoying.

Their wines are overpriced for what they are right now. Give them a couple more years. The potential is there

Upon entering the charming house we were greeted immediately by the tasting room manager, Kephanie. She introduced their 13 wines and gave us our tasting options. While she got our drinks poured she invited us to tour the house and the grounds and let us know that we could sit anywhere we liked. There were quite a few rooms and as the only people there at the time, it felt like we had free range of the entire house! With all the character, antique furniture, and Knick Knacks, it felt like we had stepped back in time. There was also ample space outside on the Adirondack chairs and the views were spectacular, but since it was unbearably hot and we needed a table for all of our snacks (they sell a variety of snacks in the tasting room, but we brought our own), we chose to sit inside the tasting room. Kephanie offered to put a couple of tables together in the tasting room for us and she helped us get comfortable and situated with our snacks and tasting. She truly made us feel like we were right at home and her lively personality was palpable! Every wine we tasted was delicious and we especially loved the bubbles! The wine was excellent, and the service made the experience one of the best we had during our trip.

She welcomed our thoughts on the tastings and was respectful of our comments. Wine is a personal preference so I try not to judge a wine just because I do not like it. I try it all because sometimes I am surprised by varietals I previously did not like. Because it turns out they are so yummy by another winery. I fell in love with Septenary's Gruner Veltliner. My husband enjoyed their chardonnay as well. It was also wonderful to see their work with other Virginia Wineries like Walsh in Loudoun County, our home county. Our visit was so nice, the tasting room so warm and inviting. Art from local artists accented the walls while a fire in the stone fireplace added to the coziness of the room. We can't wait to return with our adult family members.

The grounds were gorgeous, and I could see myself spending a lot of time hearing nestled under the trees. The first thing we noticed is that instead of tasting at a long bar, we were invited to choose a table and be served by a member of staff. And, instead of a set tasting list, you can pick and choose what you want among the offerings to build your own (see photo). The Viognier was a stand out, very creamy and soft. I also enjoyed the red blends, especially the Springhouse Red. We will be back!
