Great place to sit and sip or picnic or catch some live music. They have several wines to try and do a nice flight that allows you to sample what they have. They also have some ciders and beers for those that are so inclined. Lots of outdoor seating both under the trees and on their covered deck. They had live music when we went. We had a nice picnic on the far side of the tasting room. That allowed us to still hear the music without it being overwhelming. There is also some limited indoor seating if the weather isn't cooperating. The staff were friendly and fast. read more

Thirteenth stop of our wine tasting weekend - Sunday 2pm. We stopped by this newish tasting room (2016) after the polo match at King Family. We enjoyed a mixed tasting flight of six wines (two whites, one rosé, and three reds) for $16 (see photos). The Merlot was, by far, my favorite. It was quite good, probably one of our favorites so far. The rest were just ok. I'm not sure if we will return, given the number of quality wineries around. Perhaps more time will improve the offerings. I wish them well. I really enjoyed the view from the covered front porch. read more

Fabulous from welcome to the finish. The service was cheery and got us excited to try the wine and come back in the future. Was pleasantly surprised to see that nibbles are available on site. We enjoyed a flight and our favorites are the Pinot Grigio and Petit Verdot. The breeze coming across fields along with the fans kept us pleasantly cool. Five stars to this winery simply for the location and view. I did not get to try the wines but I would absolutely return just to enjoy the sunset here. What a delightful hidden gem! It was not the easiest winery to find, but well worth it!! Quaint and very cozy - not commercial at all, which was nice. The owner was very sweet and fun to chat with. The wines were very good, I must say. We enjoyed the whites and the reds... there was no food choices, so remember to PYO (pack your own). The location was off the beaten path, so very quiet (until it got busy)... There is lots of seating areas - inside the main house; the porch (attached to the main house); lots of tables and chairs and picnic tables... Very dog and kids friendly. We pick the most perfect day to go there. We were there around 2 p.m. on a Friday. We had picked up Wegmans Chinese food to have a picnic there. The woman that was doing the tasting said she was a partner. She was very kind to us and helped us select a Chardonnay. It is extremely kid friendly and even had horses to play with outside. We clipped a high chair onto a bench and even our littlest was able to enjoy. The Highlight was watching the horses and in particular Mickey the 27 year old horse. Spending a few dollars for a moderate size generator (just enough to power the water pump would be very helpful to keep the sanitary systems working. That is, toilets, handwashing facilities and the like. Things like power outages happen unexpectedly but simple and cost effective planning and preparation are easily accomplished, If, there is a will. Otherwise, what a very nice place. Cute little winery in Crozet. Tasting room is small and cozy and there's a bunch of board games, including scrabble. The wines are great- especially the Rose. It's dry and not overly sweet- super refreshing in the summer! The view is amazing and the patio is super cute with comfy seats. The winery dogs are also super friendly! And so are the ponies and the horses. Definitely a highlight! read more

The location among other wineries is a good one, but the actual grounds needs a lot of attention. We are from the country and are certainly not snooty, but the smell of manure is NOT the aroma you want for your winery. You park inbetween the tasting room and a barn - a full-functioning, smelly barn. There were random people standing around the barn, maybe working? We had to ask if we were even in the right place. I'm all for unique ambiances and small business owners, but something should be done to either separate the two with different parking or a fence or at least spruce it up a bit. The wine was also not impressive. The cost of the tasting does not include your glass and I believe it was around $8. We tried 5 wines: two white, one rosé, and two reds. They are open Saturday and Sunday 12-6 from April to October. read more

What can I se about this cute family owned place other than I LOVE IT!!? It's small so if you're looking for a large commercial winery this isn't the place but it's beautiful. I wanted to find a winery near Charlottesville that was open late when it's cold ...and this was the spot. The views are beautiful and there's so many animals! Lovely blue mountain views on an excellent outdoor deck! Bring your own chairs, or reserve a table in advance - it can get pretty crowded here. The tastings are wonderful, but in pandemic times bottles are available for sale, as well as snacks to enjoy. My fave is the Petit Verdot, which will run you about $30/bottle. The indoor space is off limits, asides the bathrooms, where masks are enforced. On weekends, you can enjoy some live music as well. Overall a smaller, homier vibe at this vineyard! read more

Knight's Gambit is a tough one to rate. The setting was wonderful and it's hard not to appreciate a place that provides a home to retired racing horses and rescue dogs. The 4 wines were middle of the road, but I didn't dislike any of them. The main complication is the tastings are done in a tent. While that's perfect on a nice day, it's definitely a good-weather only tasting experience. The name has a double meaning. Knight's Gambit is the name of a Faulkner book (actually a collection of short stories), and not coincidently Faulkner himself is a relative of one of the owners. It's also a high risk chess move - not unlike the risk inherent in opening a winery. With only 4 wines on the menu - two reds and two whites - there isn't a lot to choose from. I did enjoy sitting down with a glass of the Pinot Grigio and scratching the belly of one dogs. You can also visit the horse stables as well - several of the horses were really beautiful. It's worth a trip just for that. This is definitely a place for animal lovers and people who just plain enjoy an outdoor tasting experience. Since it's a smaller tasting menu, it's worth squeezing it in during a wine trail among the larger places nearby. read more

Dropped by Knight's Gambit while touring other wineries in the area - it pairs well with other options in Crozet. It's a humble spot on a small farm with a modest and cozy tasting room. If you're looking for a laid back experience that's almost like dropping by a friend's house, then you will love this spot. Friendly and informative staff poured some of their offerings while we got to hang out with the shop pup. Outside on the deck, you have a nice view of their property and you can go down and hang out with some of the farm animals. The wine was fine and tasting prices reasonable. read more

This event was a tasting of wine and snacks Knight's Gambit Vineyard, which truth be told, I had never heard of before this event. There was one thing that was glaringly apparent when I arrived, and that was: "Holy cow! This place is beautiful!" I arrived during sunset, and the mountain views from their deck with horses grazing in the pasture certainly added to the atmosphere. There was a slight aroma of manure that danced in the air, but not in a "dirty animal toilet" kind of way, more like a "Hey, I'm on a farm, and this smells authentic" kind of way. Anyhow, the wines were delightful, the service was friendly, and if you have the means, go during sunset. read more

I really enjoyed this small, little Vineyard. I tried the rose and it was pretty good! The tasting room was cute and quaint- it felt welcoming and cozy like someone's living room, but also beautiful. I love that there were three dogs just meandering around the property. They were super sweet, and one loved my little baby that I brought along. The service was friendly as well. Definitely the highlight here was the view. The mountain view is gorgeous! The patio is large and has ample, comfortable seating. There are also picnic tables to sit on in the yard area. Of all the wineries we visited during our time in Charlottesville, Knight's Gambit was our hands down favorite. A new entry in the area, Knight's Gambit's wines aren't quite up to the level of nearby larger wineries, but the friendly farm feel and simple tasting room provides a welcome alternative to the more upscale wineries in the area. Knight's Gambit defining quality is the authentic farm feel. Unlike the more polished tasting rooms of nearby King Family and Grace Estate, Knight's Gambit offers a modest and new tasting room built on a family farm. If you're an animal lover you're in luck, as you can get a up close encounter at the barn with very friendly horses (especially if you have a hand full of hay) and some equally friendly canines. The views from the farm are beautiful, with views of the mountains on all sides. Odds are you will have your wine poured by either Paul or Maggie, the two owners. For the tasting, they definitely offer stronger whites than the reds I tasted, and I as delighted all of the wines were dry. The Pinot Grigio was crisp and dry with only the faintest hint of sweetness. The Chardonnay is aged in oak and has that woody taste along with apples and vanilla. Next was the Petit Verdot, which has 25% Cabernet Franc in it, which had a smoky taste to it but lacked that vibrant dark fruit taste I love in this wine. The Meritage offered much more of that dark taste and was smoky like the Petit Verdot. Overall, while I wasn't blown away by the wines, they offered pretty solid varietals that will only improve over time. The real draw of Knight's Gambit is the location and the actual working farm the winery sits on. It's a perfect location for animal lovers and for the whole family. And with live music almost every weekend, Knight's Gambit is a winery to keep your eye on. read more

I don't know how this place stays in business. It is out by Lake Albemarle and in a nice out of the way spot but always a ghost town. Then I tried their wines and I understand why. Nice views don't make up for 1 star wine. Try Rausse, Pippin or Veritas for better views, nicer staff and better wine. read more

We stumbled upon this winery by accident. The wine was delicious and the staff very nice. They do not serve food but let you bring a picnic if you choose. The scenery was breathtaking. They are next to a horse farm. I thought the farm was affiliated with the winery but it was not. Still, those at the horse farm were very gracious and allowed me into the stables to pet the horses.
