A friend and I visited this vineyard last weekend. She opted for the white tasting and as I don't like oaky whites or tanniny reds, the gentleman who was working there put together a mix of two whites and two reds for me to try. As it was a nice day, we bought some cheese and crackers and sat outside to enjoy our wine. My two favorites were the chardonnay '23, which was aged in steel and the cab franc '23. It's a pretty location, especially on a nice day. There's plenty of outdoor seating. They have a wide selection of wine to try. I'd recommend stopping in. read more

I loved this vineyard and would recommend if you're doing a wine tour in the area! The white wine flight I ordered was very good (particularly the viogne), and someone in our party enjoyed one of the reds so much she got a bottle. The view is incredible, and the staff is very friendly and clearly passionate about their work. I would definitely come again! read more

A medium sized winery like many in the area, but we still enjoyed tasting the various wines and walking around the natural, beautiful grounds and gardens. The shop inside is small and the day we went, was very crowded. We bought several reds, and found them to be average, but still palatable. We enjoyed the Chardonnay and the Rosé. Another great winery! I'm not 100% positive what it has to do with Thomas Jefferson - it didn't seem historical and we didn't see any posted information to tell us otherwise. Howverrrr service was great! Our bartender even gave us recommendations for other things to do in the area - she was probably the most personable bartender of our entire trip to Charlottesville. A charming winery with great wine, scenery, and people! Wineries are really hit or miss anywhere in the U.S. outside of California, I've found. Jefferson Vineyards is definitely a hit and should be on your list of wineries to visit if you're ever in Charlottesville, Virginia. We decided to visit this winery after a neighbor back in Illinois told us he had Jefferson's Viognier and absolutely loved it. Before even arriving, I had a feeling this would be a great experience based on how kind one of their staff members, Lisa, was on the phone. I called ahead to make sure they were dog-friendly and, like many places in Charlottesville, they are! That one phone interaction was so pleasant that it made me look forward to the visit even more. There is plenty of seating throughout the vineyard, and they have a really cute area tucked within their garden near the tasting room. When we arrived, we found ourselves a nice spot under an umbrella right in front of the tasting room. Three members of our group had the Governor's Cup flight, which included the 2023 Viognier, the Chardonnay RSV, the 2022 Petit Verdot, and either the 2022 or 2023 Meritage (two whites and two reds). These are wines that won awards at the Virginia Governor's Cup and are considered their top selections. I went with the all-white flight and was thrilled with it. This included the 2022 Viognier, the 2023 Viognier Steel, the 2022 Petit Manseng, and the 2023 Chardonnay. We all thoroughly enjoyed our wines. For me, I especially want to highlight the Petit Manseng, which is a varietal I'm not particularly familiar with, but I really enjoyed. Their description of it having tropical notes was spot on. Our main mission, though, was to determine which Viognier to bring home. Our neighbor couldn't remember exactly which one he had purchased, so after our flights, we bought a glass of the 2022 Viognier and a glass of the 2023 Viognier to decide. Both are aged in 90% oak and 10% steel. The best part of our little research project was that our results were inconclusive. Both wines were so enjoyable that we left the vineyard with a case of each! I will add that they have limited snack offerings during the week, but I was told on the phone beforehand that outside food is entirely welcome. I believe they have a small restaurant or kitchen with a more expansive menu that is open on weekends only. I could not be more pleased with our visit to Jefferson Vineyards. Anytime you can be surrounded by good wine and even better family, it makes all of life's problems melt away. Thank you for making our visit so wonderful. Highly recommended. read more

A good winery. Definitely a historical place. I was impressed with a few of their bottles and we did pick up a few. The tasting room is unimpressive. Perhaps I was expecting something impressive... it is the oldest in the state and has to be older than most wineries in the country. Some building that looked at least like an out building from Monticello would seem appropriate. Nothing wrong with the place, just a bit underwhelming in the ambiance department. We found the service to be just fine. Folks were nice. Nothing outstanding in that area though. Again not bad, just not what I would have expected for a winery that's 250 years old and associated with one of the Founding Fathers of the US. I would recommend visiting, just to pick up a bottle with "Jefferson" on the label. read more

We came by here after our Monticello visit. Coming from California, we've been disappointed by some wineries and vineyards on the East Coast, but this place was great. I had no clue there was a winery nearby, and we enjoyed a bottle of Viognier while live music was going on in the patio. I don't like sweet wines, but the Viognier was crisp, refreshing, and more in the category of a fruitier Sauvignon blanc or Chardonnay, as it was not a sweet Viognier. Price was reasonable considering the proximity of high tourism, and I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. read more

The service, assistance & knowledge of the staff coupled with the friendly atmosphere they offer for people and dogs is wonderful! Such a nice group and beautiful atmosphere. We brought in our own food from Simeon's on the roadway into the tasting room, which they recommended and it was for made with love for sure. We came in July, and it was stupid hot outside. There was live music and we sat and enjoyed the music with our wine for a bit, but had to go inside after a while because I was melting. We ordered a white wine flight and a summer flight. I liked the wines a lot, especially the Viognier Steel '22, and Riesling '22. What we didn't realize was how expensive the tastings were going to be - $42! It was pricy for the two of us. That's why the three stars. We ordered the panini and tots from the food truck and they were excellent. The woman taking my order was super nice. The grounds are pretty but there are definitely other wineries around with better views. Dogs are allowed on the grounds but not in the tasting room. read more

A truly beautiful location, but a bit commercial for my taste when it comes to wineries. The wine tasting is a tad pricey but good pours and you get a glass. As is true for many of the wineries on this trail, the quality /price ratio is a bit off in my opinion. Perhaps they get an influx of visitors from DC which helps them maintain higher prices. In general the wine isn't bad - it just isn't up to the price point they offer it at. Glad I visited. Love the Steel Chardonnay! The Oaked would go well with steak, but it's a beast alone. I've transitioned away from Rose, but the 2021 edition is actually very tasty. Went here with my fiancé and we enjoyed our time here. We got the apple wine, which neither of us had had before, and it was refreshing and tasty. It tasted like hard cider without the carbonation. They had plenty of outdoor seating and we enjoyed the flowers and plants in the gardens as well. The staff was helpful and let us sample some of the stuff before we got it. We were actually driving around, came up on Jefferson Vineyards & decided to popped in. I did the wine tasting for $12 - 8 samples. From the quick vino history that I took in between tastings: Thomas Jefferson was America's first wine connoisseur who was convinced by his close friend, Philip Mazzei, an Italian Doctor & the vineyard was established...the first wine company in Virginia. The tasting lasted about 15 minutes allowing for good dialogue. I tried both white & red wines, of course enjoying the reds more. I bought a bottle of the Vin Rouge, that is light bodied, fruit forward with a blend of cherry & spices for $19. Private & Library Wine Tastings are available. There's a lot of merchandise to purchase, as I got a Carafe & an additional wine glass to match my complimentary glass from the tasting. You can bring in your own food or buy the basic meat, cheeses & crackers. Although it was 40 degrees outside, people were sitting on the lawn chairs enjoying their bottles & the scenery. Other seating areas include an outside raised deck & a special event's building that is heated. For overnight accommodations, the Colle (a historical estate) is a six-bedroom family home for room up to 10 people located across the road from the vineyard. The Jefferson Winery is operated by the Woodward Family, three generations strong. I enjoyed everything about my impromptu visit, wine tasting & history lesson. read more

Gorgeous winery! My husband and I had a great time. We started inside with a tasting. The tasting fee was a reasonable $12 per person and included a souvenir glass. We tasted eight wines and liked a few of them! We ultimately bought a bottle of the Vin Blanc to share outside. The property allows patrons to bring their own food, so pack a picnic. We brought our own assortment of cheeses and felt comfortable relaxing here and enjoying the property for a few hours. From what I could tell, there is no inside seating. Keep that in mind and plan to visit on fair weather days. read more

I didn't get updates on their production but they still seem a not huge but sizable presence in the Charlottesville area. My servers were very friendly, and I lucked out - they were doing a special tasting of their 14 Petit Verdot this weekend, and were happy to let me sample it. The tasting room isn't big; there is no indoor space for groups but they have outdoor patios. But with the grounds of Monticello next door, it's hard to argue with their view. What I tried: Rose: Off dry; light 2017 Viognier: Wonderful!!! Honeydew notes. Best Viognier I've had in a long time. 2017 Chardonnay Reserve: Too oakey for me Vin Rouge (mostly Merlot): Light, soft red 2016 Cab Franc: Soft for a Franc; pepper notes, cherry finish. Just outside of town, Jefferson vineyards sits in a little corner of perfect Virginia scenery and produces delicious wine. I visited Jefferson Vineyards with my husband and his parents recently, and was impressed with their wine selection when we did a tasting. Their dry rose would be especially good in the warmer months, but their Viognier 2017 and Meritage 2016 were my favorites. The lady who was pouring for us during the tasting told us she was just a part-time (two day a week) employee, but she was very knowledgeable, and while she didn't berate us with information, she was happy to answer my questions regarding the history of the vineyard and the processes used in making their wine. Jefferson Vineyards produces Old World style wines, so they're all fairly dry, but their Vin Rouge and Vin Blanc are really tasty, easy-drinking table wines, red and white, respectively. The little veranda outside the tasting room at Jefferson is also very nice; there's a mountain view, but also a beautifully cared for garden full of bright flowers (many pollinator species) and shrubs. We enjoyed the wine we had on premises and then went for a bottle to take home and keep for a few years, for it to reach its true potential, which we don't usually do, but this wine was delicious, and it seemed like a good moment to start building our "cellar." read more

They were not even going to let us in at first, but then we explained that we had a reservation, but they canceled it because they stopped offering reservations. No one at the winery was happy to help or offer recommendations. While the setting was very pretty, none of the wines were good and the service and seating leaves much to be desired as well. Love this spot. They are kid and dog friendly. They have a HUGE yard that we saw kids kicking soccer balls (bring a blanket/chairs for that). They have a bunch of picnic tables with umbrellas so you can bring your own food. The view is gorgeous. The people there are very friendly. They have a wine shop and then the tasting room. They don't have a ton of parking, but it doesn't take long to find parking. Dogs are also permitted inside the tasting room on a leash. Very cool! And the staff is wonderful. It was nothing spectacular. I was expecting beautiful scenery and views and a lot of space but this place is right off of a semi- noisy main road with not such great views. The wine flights were not worth it (4 cups were filled to maybe 1 oz each). It's worth getting a bottle of wine instead. read more

Pros: Beautiful scenery and views Good wine Lots of COVID precautions and felt like a safe environment Cons: Amount of wine served in flights did not seem like enough for amount paid - $15 for 4 wine samples. It seemed like all four pours were less than 1 glass of wine combined. There was barely enough for my husband and I to both take a sip to try. Reservation and $20 deposit required which I was okay with but it bugged me we couldn't use it on the wine flights only on a bottle purchase. In my opinion, if a customer is willing to pay a deposit they should be able to apply that deposit to any food or beverage purchase. It seemed like most of the wines that were not included in the wine flights were only available to purchase by bottle and not glass so we couldn't taste them before deciding if we wanted to buy a bottle. I am sure they were doing this to limit waste given the lower number of visitors allowed at this time but we wish we could have tried more! I get that they were trying to prevent people from touching the iPads at the check out it but it is very awkward to ask someone if they want to leave a tip and what amount they want to leave. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and all of our "cons" seem to be a function of the "COVID environment". We look forward to visiting in the future when things get back to "normal"! read more

Beautiful venue, pleasant staff, but the 2020 vintage wines I tasted were terrible. The clerk noticed my reaction and explained that frost damaged 2020 beyond any comparison to fine, award-winning earlier vintages. Ignore the prices...these are basically $10 retail value. read more
