We were looking for a spot to visit and stay overnight at few hours drive from our home in Annapolis, for a change of scenery. I started researching various wineries and vineyards along the Monticello Wine Trail, because we had stayed at B&B in Charlottesville once a number of years ago. I settled on Afton Mountain Vineyards and I am SO glad we found it. We booked an overnight stay in one of their cabins. The very modern, well-appointed cabins can be rented even on weekdays when the winery itself is not open for tasting hours (we checked in yesterday, on a Wednesday). A sleepover at a winery! What a great thing to add to my summer adventures! The whole property is beautiful; very peaceful and serene. We enjoyed wine we had purchased earlier in the day on the back porch last evening and then coffee this morning. Our checkout time was 11:00 this morning, so we headed to the tasting room then. I wanted to try their Albarino wine. We purchased two glasses from a lovely employee in the tasting room, and sat outside for over an hour just soaking in the gorgeous scenery. They have thought of every amenity. read more

Service is friendly, view is beautiful, my wine flight of 4 varied was excellent except the pours were closer to 1.5/2 oz and at $20 that was not reasonable. I noticed that flights shared by 2 appeared to have more of a pour. I purchased an excellent bottle of Albariño ($32) and a snack of antipasti olives & cheese. The rosé in my flight was excellent & closer to $24. read more

One glass literally had one sip in it, which means I paid $5.00 for just one little taste. Plus, they were supposed to have food trucks on this day and there were none. This is my favorite winery!!!! The service is on point every time, the People servicing are well knowledgeable about the wine and great conversations. The views are absolutely beautiful and my favorite. It's dog friendly outside. They have a great tasting room that is huge sliding doors/windows to open it up on a nice day. Not really any food options just cheese and crackers. Really wish they had a kitchen of paninis, flat breads or something. You can't go wrong with wine from here. 10/10 highly recommend. read more

Okay, I'm a little biased, I definitely came here because I share the same name as the winery, but I did enjoy my time there. It is a very rare occasion that I come across a person, or place for that matter, that has the same name as I, so visiting the vineyard was a pleasant experience. I got got a flight of wines, all of them were quite tasty. Afton primarily has dry wines, but they each have their own unique flavor and grape variety. I was greeted and give great information on the vineyard and the wines offered by an employee, and learned that Afton vineyards is one of the oldest wineries in Virginia. Not only is the wine great, I bought several bottles, the vineyard had gorgeous views of the mountains and sky. The vineyard is located right next to a small river, had a wonderful pavilion, and gorgeous seating inside the house, and on the patio. Too bad it was so cold today, it would have been nice to have a picnic outside. read more

One of my favorite vineyard's I visited! The wine was amazing. My friend and I got 2 red wine flights and the wine was amazing. You get 5 samples to try and they all were great. Holy pajamas is this great wine!!! Seriously....forget about Flying Fox....REALLY forget Valley Rd. Just drive up the mountain for not only the most stunning and magestic vineyard view but the BEST grapes VA has to offer. We were guided by Emily. Oh Emily. She of the wonderful sense of humor. Really good wine! I loved the little jars they put the flights in! Unfortunately it was raining but it cleared up right before we left. I'd recommend getting here early in the day, if you plan to go on a Saturday. The best seats, with the rocking chairs and views (inside), fill up quick! We came here to do wine tasting and lunch. Although it was a sadly wet day, it didn't ruin my hopes to experience the wineries of Afton. The Blue zridge mountain sight was breathtaking. I'm The seating and tables weren't filled to a pleasant surprise for a saturday. I guess there are some benefits of coming on a rainy day. But it didn't stop some people coming for a tasting. I loved seeing the view and scenery sitting under their beautifully built gazebo. Our winery tour guide brought us here for a beautiful lunch. Tastings cost $10 and $2 extra for a glass tasting. The wine was good. I enjoyed the Gerwurtziminer. The rest is just ok. Across the way is beautiful Afton cottages and a gaze of their lush full vineyard. People can stay the night here in a 1 or two bedroom getaway or enhanced stay with a wine lovers 1night retreat. Horse riding may be available as Ive seen guides navigating riders along the Afton fields. Due to covid their operations are at a 50 percent capacity, wearing masks. The social distancing was real here and no one allowed under the age of 21 may visit. read more

Missed the opportunity to leave a review for Afton a while back. So since this was so long ago a revisit is much needed. Upon my first visit to Afton they had some very unique and different wines. They were mostly good dry wines if I remember correctly. Aftons outdoors definitely has a lot of good seating space and relaxing views. The outdoor pavilion was pretty cool and probably my most favorite seating area. The staff was friendly and good cheese plates were available. read more

Pros: one of the most picturesque wineries we went to, with an awesome half enclosed patio. Took our group reservation for 6 and were kind. Loved their rose and it was a fair price. Tastings are allowed (pre-poured) and comes with some crackers. The area is social distanced and just so pretty for photos. Cons: not many. Their tastings were the least formal/smallest amount compared to some other local wineries we visited. The whites were nothing special. Only one outdoor bathroom available and absolutely nothing opened inside. The road here is a bit windy so be aware :) read more

Scenic location near/in GW National Forest, dog friendly, courteous and friendly staff, Attractive, winetasting building, plenty of places to sit outside, and enjoy the views. Cab franc was on the thinner side but tasty. Albariño had more depth than I've had before; I recommend it. Prices are steep by the glass; essentially one pays for half a bottle for one glass of wine. I assume that pricing is designed to push you to buy their wine by the bottle. read more

One of my favorite wineries on Nelson 151. I've been here twice -- once during the pandemic and once last month. My experience was enjoyable both times. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I'm a red wine drinker, and their reds do not disappoint. Petit Verdot and Bacco are my favorites here. The view is incredible, and you can bring your own food for a picnic. This has to be one of the most overlooked vineyards in the Charlottesville area. So many of my friends have never been here, but it's definitely worth checking out. The views are too notch, and the wine is also excellent (we are very partial to the rose on a summer day!) I also like the covered patio area - it's perfect as the weather starts getting cooler. I'm excited for real tastings to come back, but for the mean time the self guided tastings do a great job at showcasing the wine! read more

We did the self wine tasting. It consisted of a paper bag with 5 bottles of wine and a small container of crackers. The wine tasting is good. The glass room with the beautiful Mountain View. Cost for the tasting was $18. You could also buy wine by the glass and bottles as well. You can also buy food that is available for the days. read more

Visited this winery today. Much a disappointment! They learned much from Covid and that is DO AWAY WITH EVERYTHING TO SERVE THE CUSTOMER. They have many wines but won't let you taste them. They have three woman at the counter but only one waits on you while every other person waits. The will only recognize you if you are willing to join the wine club. This vineyard has become smug and is NO LONGER customer friendly. What happened to "WINE TASTING"? This was when wineries allowed you to taste their wines so you would find your favorite and purchase a bottle or bottles? These days are gone and they blame it on COVID. It's not covid but lack of caring about the customer. Have we come this far that they just want to collect the cash and screw the experience of the customer? I think so. read more

My favorite visit during a 4-winery Charlottesville visit. Maybe I should have saved it for last, because it was definitely the best. All the reds had amazing color and nose; it was hard not to admire my glass before drinking them down. The 2013 Cab Sav and 2013 Festa di Bacco 'Super Tuscan' were the highlights. I was shocked to find a Super Tuscan here in VA; not nearly enough places grow Sangiovese, and I'm a big fan of Italian style wines. Bought a bottle of the Sav; for the price it was a steal. The Gewurztraminer white was a nice surprise. Sweet nose but very floral taste. The grounds were also very nice; had I thought about it I would have set up a picnic overlooking the pond next door. All their grapes are estate grown, which I always find a plus. All in all, a great experience. read more

Where to start...when we first arrived, we were told that had they known we had more than 8 people they would "have recommended [we] go somewhere else". We were part of a "hostage situation", their words, not mine, because a power line fell across the drive and cars were unable to get in or out. They provided us with no complimentary water or food, despite there being no timeline for how long we would be there, but did give us all a taste of champagne as we were leavongThe building was not safe to be in during a storm, as it was all windows, the doors wouldn't stay shut, and the roof was leaking. As you drive up, take in the beauty of the land. As you get closer to the buildings, take in the beauty of the architecture. It's just gorgeous out there. Inside, we were greeted by friendly staff and did the tasting of about 4-5 wines. I'm no wine pro, but I did notice the glass was not rinsed between each tasting. Also, I hate to say this, but not a single one of the wines was very good in my opinion. Beautiful place, but I would sadly not return for the wine. read more

UPDATE: I'm not sure what happened here, as this used to be one of my favorite wineries on The Monticello Wine Trail, but the quality of the wine has suffered and prices are through the roof. It wasn't long ago that the Gewurtztraminer - which is surprisingly good here despite the warmer climate than say, Germany or the Finger Lakes - is nearing $25 and the tasting is up to $10 a person. I recently did a tasting in the Finger Lakes, home of cold weather Gewurtz and Riesling, and the tasting was half that (some were even free) and the bottles were still well below $20. The rest of their wines tasted a bit thin, and really doesn't justify the $28-$38 a bottle price tag, especially with so many better and less expensive wineries nearby. It's a shame to see a winery as good as Afton, with a new glass enclosed patio to boot, sliding downward from prominence. This one has moved from a must-visit to a skip for me. read more

I love this place! My friend and I went on a weekday and we were part of a handful of people there. I thoroughly enjoyed the tasting and the views. Their Chardonnay is delicious. I enjoyed our pourer- she was knowledgeable, but not pretentious, as I have experienced at others. The tasting is $10. I had a glass of chardonnay to have on the deck and it couldn't have been better. They allow you to have outside food while on the deck. They also have cabins that you can't rent for 2 nights on the property- very enticing. This was my first trip to Charlottesville wineries and I will definitely remember my experience here despite the wine I had. read more

Afton mountain is a hidden gem that I have gone to many times throughout the years! $10 tasting menu of great wines all produced locally. The Bacco red blend was light and fun (a Sangiovese blend). I think they've increased the tasting price recently. For that price I would have like to have tasted a few more then the 5 wines allotted or been able to take home a souvenir glass, but still enjoyed going. The view is breathtaking with a charming little lake and rolling hills. Afton will continue to be on my go to list of places to visit on a wine tour. read more

This place is definitely one of our favorite vineyards in Monticello. The vineyards are breathtakingly gorgeous. There is a giant pond on one side and beautiful vineyards on the other. The tasting room is really nice and the wines do not disappoint. We love sitting on the back patio overlooking a Godly view while sipping some really good wine. They just recently build a few cottages which are now available for rent. They also have a guest house for four which looks really awesome. I may have to check it out soon! read more

As others have said, they've recently transitioned to small glass containers, which is good. However, when we went 2 weeks ago they were still doing sealed jello cups inside a stapled paper bag. So, of course, the white wine was warm and the red wine was whatever temp it sat there at. We were only able to buy a glass of Chardonnay or Rosé, which we did. No other options were available, which was weird because if people are coming to taste, especially on a cold, rainy, and windy day, they're probably really motivated to try AND BUY! We would've probably enjoyed the nice view from the Tasting Hut, but furniture was stacked around, kids were running throughout with no attempt from the 3 employees or parents to contain them, and the plasticized "menu" for food just didn't really give us the ambience we wanted. The wines were not bad and the view is beautiful, but the strangeness of the tasting experience and lack of warmth from the employees who were not interested in explaining the wines made us sad. We'll try again another time when we return, but for now it was only 3 stars. Good luck and hope things keep improving as we adjust to a COVID world! read more

The lady who gave us the tasting was really sweet to chat with, and knowledgeable about the wines and the Vineyard itself. Talk about GORGEOUS views! The view of the mountains from the patio area are stunning, and I love how they open up the giant windows on a nice day so you can feel outdoors yet covered & shaded. Their wines were delicious, and we were able to bring our own outdoor food. They also had goats on their property which were a treat to see! One thing to note is that Afton Mtn is very strict about their rules (I.e. no parties more than 6), however I really appreciated that aspect during these covid times--just make sure to look them up before you arrive and you shouldn't have any issues! read more
