Stopped in for a tasting recently.... The manager who handled our tasting did a very nice job explaining their wines and talking about the venue and the vines. Their wines tasted quite nicely, especially the chardonnay. Prices are pretty attractive too. The tasting room is beautifully framed timber with nice seating throughout. Overall, it was a nice visit and I could see coming back, especially when the weather is nicer and enjoying sitting & sipping outside!

Chestnut Oak currently specialize in two wines, giving visitors a unique chance to do the ultimate vertical tasting. The biggest strength of the Monticello Wine trail is the sheer variety of wineries - you can find pretty much anything you want. Chestnut Oak, with a brand new tasting room in Barboursville, adds to that variety by only offering two wines - Petit Manseng and Cabernet Sauvignon. The twist is you can taste them from different years and marvel at how different the same grapes taste year-to-year. We were guided in our tasting tour through time by a wonderful pourer and a broad selection of palate cleansers, including bread, trail mix, and these little salty cheesy things. For only $5, you can try four Petit Manseng and three Cabernet Sauvignon. The Petit Manseng all share that crisp refreshing taste, but vary on everything else. The 2010 was surprisingly sweet, the 2011 was much less sweet and with smooth acidity, the 2012 was the most refreshing and driest of the bunch, and the 2013 had a touch of sweetness with a rich floral/citrus taste. The Cabernet Sauvignon offered significant variety year-to-year. The 2009 was smooth with velvety texture with a hint of sweetness, the 2010 had a spicy and peppery bite, and the 2013 offered more dark fruit and rich tannins. Overall, Chestnut Oak offers a one-two punch of a unique vertical tasting experience (the only other one I can think of Moss Vineyards) and flavorful wines. The customer service is top-notch, and I look forward to them eventually expanding their lineup outside of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Manseng. A must-visit in the Barboursville area.

I come to my timeshare cabin in Shenandoah crossing Gordonsville Virginia every year and look forward to my annual visit to the local vineyards... I have been going to Barboursville, Horton, Burnley, and Reynard Florence but yesterday the talk at the tables was about this new vineyard in our area called Chestnut Oak... The wine is fabulous and the setting is amazing. The room, the painted murals all over the walls not to mention the experience itself! Seriously... Go to Horton (which has great, fun wines) and experience their tasting with their smashed up bowl of soup crackers and dingy musky surroundings versus this experience at Chestnut Oak! It is just sheer class while delivering delicious reasonably priced wines! Be sure to check their tasting hours though because at this time of year they are only open on Saturdays from noon till five!

Loved this winery! Loved the decor and the beautiful architecture of the inside of the winery. The wine tasting was only $5. Wish they had more wines to try but they were pretty good.

Poor tasting experience. Disorganized and almost rude staff distracted from the wine. Wine may have been fine but I wouldn't recommend based on the staff. We felt uncomfortable and so did the other guests there. Tasting room itself was beautiful with high ceilings, great murals, and attention to detail.

We briefly chatted with the staff and said we would come back later. We came back after 1pm the same day. My wife got a flight of four wines. I got a glass of Meritage. We sat out front near a fire pit. It was so nice just sitting there, letting the sun warm your face. It got crowded as we "people watched". They had live music @ 2pm but we didn't stay for that. One of the owners chatted with us for a bit. She was very nice. The staff inside were also very kind and helpful. They young lady from Ohio who served us was super helpful and we would like to say thank you to her for great service! The wine was excellent. We bought three bottles of the 2019 Meritage. Very good. We will be back !

You can choose how many wines you'd like to taste for different prices. They took the time to tell me about their wines and give advice on which ones I might enjoy based on my taste. Their wines were a bit dryer than my liking but weren't bad. The best part was enjoying my wine on a comfy couch on the porch, which overlooked some of the vineyard. It's a welcoming place and I'd definitely stop in again when I'm in the area

Then I remembered what I was looking for, thinking of the last vineyard we visited, not pretentious. The smell of the earth mixed in with what farmland smells like is intoxicating. The service by the extremely friendly, next door neighbor like female that tended to us was the best. We came in about 30 minutes before the place closed and felt so bad for not being aware of that and instead of making it well known that they were about to close she welcomed us in as if we had the whole afternoon ahead of us. We only had a glass of wine each due to us coming in so late but the wine we had was so good we are taking a bottle with us. There have been very few places that have made me feel as at home as this place has. Though, not only at home but made me feel transported to a place where time stands still and you get to just take a breath in and forget about all the stresses of every day life while enjoying a good glass of wine. Needless to say we shall be back.

With so many positive reviews, how could we go wrong? They set us up in the cutest little private cottage and we're so sweet. Unfortunately that's where the charm begins and ends. We got five different wines to try. The bubbly was good but the rest were awful. No one in our group of ten found them even remotely drinkable. The one red was so acidic, my friend was up until 4:00am with an upset stomach from the acid burn. It's incredibly disappointing how bad the wines are given how cute the space is and how friendly the staff is. We went back to our Airbnb and opened our own bottles afterwards to cleanse our palattes.

There is very limited seating in the indoor wine bar--two small tables is just about it. If they don't have a wedding or other event, the large barn-like event space is open with seating, but its cool and drafty so if you're hiding from the weather it is not ideal. They have a very small food menu and offer a rotating menu of cider flights and cocktails. Generally, ciders are quite dry, not at all like angry orchard or redd's (for comparison). The cocktails are fun and creative. I loved having the option for a hot drink in late December. At some point, I'd love to be able to come when the weather is beautiful and can take advantage of their outdoor wine bar, fire pits, and view. Ample parking, though as you follow the road up to the winery, you move from gravel to packed dirt. Parking can get quite muddy as it is just grass/dirt, and there can be some deep tracks left from cars in previous weather. Definitely not a reason to skip this place, but something that we noticed as we were coming/going since we were in a very small car.
