I would give this food negative stars if I could. I ordered a turkey/blt club on white toast via grubhub. The sandwich was inedible. First bread wasn't even toasted. Took a bite & immediately knew this was not fresh turkey - but some type of processed turkey lunch meat & it was disgusting. It looked AND tasted horrible. The cheese on it was also clearly old so I took that off the sandwich too. I thought I would make a sandwich with just the bacon, lettuce & tomato but the bread fell apart (it was clearly old too) & there was maybe ONE whole slice of bacon on the whole sandwich. I was so pissed I called the restaurant to tell them how disgusting & inedible the food was & asked why they would put a turkey sandwich on the menu if it's just processed lunchmeat? While the decor is your typical brunch place with the room smelling of that excellent syrup flavor, the food is definitely worthy of its reputation of being the best brunch place in the western suburbs. The omelettes are fluffy and huge, the coffee is delicious with multiple flavors of creamer at the table. My expectations weren't high, but I was happily surprised. I really enjoyed Blueberry Hill in Darien. Ample parking was a nice start. And at 10:30 on a Saturday morning, we were able to get a table for 4 adults and 2 children immediately. The hostess was thoughtful and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed. Service was warm and attentive throughout. Solid breakfast options with real variety. Great pancakes, and they could poach eggs beautifully. I firmly believe that if you cannot poach eggs well, you have no business in a restaurant kitchen. I didn't have the chorizo, but I am told it was flavorful and not greasy in the Fiesta Sillet. The kids we were with are moderately picky eaters, and they ate most everything too, with minimal cajoling. Loved looking around and seeing families with kids,, couples, older people and young. Everyone was comfortable here. Good acoustics and manageable noise level, so we could actually have a conversation. Excellent basic diner coffee like grown-ups used to drink. The Blueberry was thick and luceous with the Blueberry compote and glaze you could really dress it up but it was great on its own. Has been solid breakfast place for years. Often have Eggs Benedict and they've been solid- not special but good. Today I think they used something like a corn starch slurry to extend the hollandaise sauce. It wasn't egg yolk yellow. Kind of tan. Ok, eggs are expensive. So charge what you have to. Then the bill comes. Up-charge to pay with credit card. Not disclosed until you look at the bottom of the check. Again, charge what you need to and wake up to a credit card world. A great place for breakfast and lunch or brunch! I ordered the Chunky Monkey Belgium waffle. I love a good Belgium waffle with pecans because the crispness of the toasted nuts along with the crisp edges of the waffle are so good. Add sliced bananas and you feel like you ordered from the "get healthy" menu. My friend ordered the tuna salad with sweet potato fries. I tried a fry and it was really good. Our server's name was Jesus. He was very attentive yet gave us time and space to enjoy a leisurely meal. I hadn't seen my friend in a couple of years and this was a great spot to enjoy a meal and catch up on life. I would never hold a table hostage if they were super busy and needed to turn the table over for another guest on a wait list. I've been coming to Blueberry Hill for the past 10 years now and it's been my go to spot for any breakfast item. The service is always amazing. Everyone is very friendly and the guest are as well. The restaurant itself has the feeling of home. You are surrounded by people of all generations and backgrounds from all over. The one thing that stands out the most for me is the swiftness of the kitchen staff. It's like you place the order with your waiter and not even 10 minutes later, bam! There's food at your table. No matter how busy the day is at Blueberry Hill, the food always comes out fast, fresh and hot. The only thing I wished they served was grits. That's all. It's always hit or miss with whole-grain pancakes, but this restaurant nailed it. Not gritty or tasteless! The pork sausage was natural and had no filler, as you often find at other restaurants. My daughter had their Farmer's skillet with feta, potatoes, and tomato. I had a taste, and I can tell you it was fresh, and the feta was perfect. (I'm Greek, so I'd know!) My daughter told me that the Greek bread toast reminded her of the bread I bake. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal, as did I. Heard so many good things, unfortunately was disappointing. Service was horrid. After being seated and taking the drink order, our server, the owner, just disappeared. Our table wasn't set properly, and we ended up having to ask for everything. Can we get utensils. Can we get water. Can we order our food. Can we get syrup. Can we get refills. Three other tables ordered, got their food, and paid before we were able to get our food and we sat down before them. OOF. And people wonder why I'm not a "morning person." If all breakfasts turned out like the one I had this past Saturday, then I'd never want to wake up before noon again. In an effort to be a shining example of a good grandson, I took my grandma--Sonja B--here for a nice little morning meal because Blueberry Hill is one of her favorite places. No problem, it's been at least a decade since I last ate here so I figured I was due for a visit & review. Although the menu offers lunch items as well, BH is the type of place at which you'd want to order some type of waffle/pancake/blintz. Sure enough, my grandma went for the strawberry crepes and I chose the banana nut french toast combo (half order) that came with eggs done sunny-side and bacon. I'll start with the good: her crepes tasted great and the portion size was ample. My bacon was extra crispy (per my request), and there were enough eggs to appease me. Since hash browns weren't included, I asked for a side order and received a HUGE portion of their breakfast potatoes which was a decent value for something like $2.49. Each of our plates came with fruit wedges, but they were all tough and rind-y (the ass end of the cantaloupe) and frankly inedible. So those got a hard pass. Everything up until this point was 'meh', not awful nor noteworthy. Then things took a turn for the worse as I dug into my french toast. It came topped with fresh banana wheels and syrup on the side........but to my shock and horror, it was one of the weakest efforts that I've ever come across. What they marketed as a half order of banana nut 'french toast' was in reality two slices of banana nut bread dusted with powdered sugar. Uncooked. Just raw banana nut bread passed off as something vaguely resembling french toast. It wasn't light or fluffy. It wasn't flavorful. It wasn't good in the slightest. France would be embarrassed to have this labeled as their country's toast. It was painfully evident that somebody in the kitchen was cutting corners, "eh, who's gonna notice anyway? Just throw some slices of our banana bread loaf on a plate. Not like we got some blogger out there with a hard-on for french toast." Bread = 2.5 Circuses = 2 Our waitress said maybe a dozen words to us, if that. Outside of the very basic greeting, she spent almost no time attending to us and even pulled a very sly check slide (you know the move, when they don't want to interrupt your conversation so they casually slip the bill face-down on your table). Except that I wasn't in mid-convo, she just didn't want to exert any more effort than absolutely necessary. It honestly felt like she was trying to avoid us. The giant decorative utensils on the wall were cool and the dining area relatively clean, but there seemed to be a constant cacophony of sounds coming from the kitchen (dropped plates, yelling, clanging pots and pans). Regardless, that doesn't excuse them from serving cut-rate french toast and grody fruit garnishes. Sorry Blueberry Hill, but you can take your deplorable attempt at banana nut french toast...... ........and go fork yourself. read more
