In a sea of almost mediocre chain Asian bakery cake offerings like JJ, 85C, Sunmerry, and some others, its hard to stand out without being something special. Blue Windmill is a gem in Gardena that completely obliterates most cakes in the area. I ordered a slice of blueberry cake and will 100% go there again if I'm ever in the area. Their sponge cake is more moist, softer and more consistent than any of the big bakeries, their cream is incredibly soft and has a subtle sweetness so when you bite into the cake, it feels like the cream is melting into your mouth. Stopped in to pick up a birthday cake today. From the outside, the bakery doesn't look very appealing and I wouldn't have gone in if I didn't have it bookmarked and read all the positive reviews. The inside of the bakery was very clean and had a nice selection of cakes and pastries. I was helped by a friendly staff member who helped me to pick the correct size of cake. There were also cake slices for sale which were useful since I was wondering how the cakes looked inside. I was originally planning to get the berry cake until I saw the inside of the chocolate strawberry cake. Our celebration isn't until tomorrow, but I was assured that the cake would be fine as long as I kept it refrigerated. She also provided complimentary candles and a plastic cake knife. VERY AMAZING experience from their customer service. I'm sure they do this with all cakes but they really out do themselves with people who purchase their cakes. Lady behind the counter was pleasant to be assisted by. she walked me through the ropes of cakes she has. Provided me some recommendations and on the end I walked out with their medium sized blueberry cake. The presentation on their cakes is really something special. And for the price their at, I don't think it's unreasonable for what they're marked at. Instead of putting your cake in a cheap, flimsy pink box, they have these really well structured boxes that make it difficult for your cake to have an accident. Very sturdy boxes. And then the lady asked me if it was for a birthday, it is, and offered me free candles and a happy birthday sign to place on the box! Super sweet. Just the best! No extra charge for the happy birthday sign and candles or for the sturdy box. This is exceptional service and care for their customers. The atmosphere inside is lively in the sense that it's busy. I came here because I used to really look forward to their blueberry chiffon cake. Upon arrival, a lady greeted us and asked us if we were looking for anything in particular. She was very welcoming and mentioned they don't have any more of the chiffon. Although I was disappointed, I was interested in trying the sweet potato cake instead. SWEET POTATO CAKE - Layers of soft vanilla cake, whip cream, and lots of smooth sweet potato. Almost like a sweet potato mousse cake. Because it's sweet potatoes... we get the cake and eat a lil slice for breakfast hehe. - While you can get the cake as a walk-in, we called about a day before just to make sure. They matched our pickup time perfectly so they would make the cake as fresh as possible THE SAME MORNING. WOW. THAT IS FRESH. CREAM PUFFS! - 100 A+. These are generously filled with genuine cream, not custard, which was what I was looking for. Puff was airy and crispy fresh. This place is wonderful! Very clean, tons of parking, and the staff is very helpful! They didn't even make fun of me when I asked where the gathering baskets were, despite it being right in front of my face. They have a vast selection to choose from, and it is all very fresh! The only thing I didn't much care for was the cornbread, but maybe that's just because I had it by itself as opposed to pairing it with some sort of southern cooking. Everything else, though? *Chef kiss* I got: Sweetened condensed milk rusk, Romeo Cookies, Healthy Rice Cake, Sweet potato pie, and the red bean filled custard bun. The rusk was perfect, and not something I have seen before in socal. The Romeo cookies were downright addictive, and unique! The sweet potato pie, while not exactly a pie, was excellent. The Healthy Rice Cake had so much going on that it was difficult to pinpoint flavors, but I still enjoyed it for the chewiness and density of it. A great snack! And finally, the red bean filled Custard Bun: perfect for breakfast, which is how I had it! It paired wonderfully with my black tea! I love this place! They have such good bread options and I love it so much! Also, on google it says its closed but it actually just has a different name: paran poong cha! I came around 10-15 minutes before closing and I was thankful to see they still had a couple of breads left. I got their soboro bread, a slice of their roll cake, the chestnut rusk, and their soft white bread. They also had a couple breads I had never heard of, like mammoth bread which was a giant slice of soboro bread with redbean and cream inside! Their white bread is literally so soft and delicious, I ate some of it on its own without anything on it. Their soboro bread was the right amount of sweetness. I haven't tried the others but i'm so excited because so far I love it! For sure coming back. read more

There's an old saying that all windmill owners in Holland must have a second job for when there is no wind. I guess being a Korean baker is a good choice. Blue Windmill Bakery in the Seoul Plaza in Gardena is a Korean bakery with traditional breads, cakes, cookies, and snacks. Like many Asian-esque bakeries, the sweetness factor on most has been turned down a notch or two. We got an assortment of pre-packaged breads to go. The Corn or Cheese Cookies were the most tempting, but I think it is an acquired taste that I just don't have, yet. The Fruit Cream Breads were beautiful which belied their plain taste. The driest was a slice of a mocha-flavored Roll Castella while the best was a Sweet Rice Cake. The oddest? Well, that was a Green Bean Pastry with a dark green filling. I didn't get it and now wish I had just to have tried it. Maybe next time. To be honest, the breads weren't spectacular and most were on the dry & plain side, however, the exuberant and outgoing owner (or manager) really was sweet. This is a cute and cozy little Korean bakery in Gardena. I stopped by here after eating at Hwang's the other night. They have all kinds of cakes, freshly baked breads and Korean style pastries which are made using red bean as well as traditional croissants and muffins. Prices are super reasonable so that you could easily order several items if you want to purchase a variety of goodies which is what my buddy and I did. We split a red bean-filled donut and a pastry roll that had red bean paste as an ingredient. Both desserts were very tasty. I especially liked the donut with red bean filling as I've never had this combination before. Coffee was only $1.50 and you can enjoy it at one of the few tables inside or better yet, take advantage of the outside seating especially on a nice warm day. All the goods are freshly baked on the premises and some of the cakes looked deliciously inviting. I would return again sometime if in the area to enjoy more of the treats sold here. read more

We found a gem in Gardena! My hubby and I were craving for bappingsu after nice lunch at Uni club. But I didn't want to pay $12 for a bowl of shaved ice at Caffebene! We were just crusing around the area then we found this cute little cafe in the plaza! We bought some pastries, ordered coffee and bappingsu. My mind was blown away when I saw this huge bappingsu coz it was only $5 !! 5 bucks only!! The cashier lady says that she likes to see her customers surprised and wowed by the serving size!
