Solid Korean bakery in Gardena. It's a very small shop, but carries a variety of pastries, breads, and cakes at reasonable prices. The other day, I stopped by for the first time and picked up a variety of stuff including a croissant, chocolate croissant, a Swiss roll cake, pizza bread, castella, apple pie, rolls, and a mini choco-strawberry cake. I didn't particularly care for the croissant. It wasn't flaky, crunchy, or buttery. However, I did enjoy eating the chocolate croissant. It was very tasty and had a nice chocolate filling. The choco-strawberry cake was solid. It had the subtly sweet whipped cream that you would expect from East Asian cakes. And it was beautifully decorated. This would be a great cake to bring to a social gathering or a birthday party. The best thing here by far is the apple pie. It's not your typical apple pie. It's more like an apple turnover. Regardless of what you would call it, it's fantastic. Unlike the croissant, it was both flaky and buttery. I highly recommend getting this when you come here. I decided to visit this bakery because I recently saw some influencers raving about it on social media. The good: I came and got a $4 iced coffee, a peanut butter cream pastry, the taro cream ball with red bean, black sesame cream ball with red bean, almond pastry, mochi multigrain pastry and an apple turnover. They were busy Saturday morning and had lots of fresh pastries coming out and being replenished. None of the pastries were too sweet. Regular hot coffee is only $2.50. The cakes looked beautiful. You can get pastries in a bag or box. The cream red bean pastries were light inside. The Apple turnover was my favorite. The bad: Personally, there was too much red bean paste in the cream pastry for me. The peanut pastry tasted like butter mixed with peanut butter. I didn't care for it too much. My husband enjoyed the mochi cookie nuts pastry but I thought it was just ok. The interesting: The exterior of the store doesn't say Blue Windmill (at least not in English). Stopped in to pick up a birthday cake today. From the outside, the bakery doesn't look very appealing and I wouldn't have gone in if I didn't have it bookmarked and read all the positive reviews. The inside of the bakery was very clean and had a nice selection of cakes and pastries. I was helped by a friendly staff member who helped me to pick the correct size of cake. There were also cake slices for sale which were useful since I was wondering how the cakes looked inside. I was originally planning to get the berry cake until I saw the inside of the chocolate strawberry cake. Our celebration isn't until tomorrow, but I was assured that the cake would be fine as long as I kept it refrigerated. She also provided complimentary candles and a plastic cake knife. VERY AMAZING experience from their customer service. I'm sure they do this with all cakes but they really out do themselves with people who purchase their cakes. Lady behind the counter was pleasant to be assisted by. she walked me through the ropes of cakes she has. Provided me some recommendations and on the end I walked out with their medium sized blueberry cake. The presentation on their cakes is really something special. And for the price their at, I don't think it's unreasonable for what they're marked at. Instead of putting your cake in a cheap, flimsy pink box, they have these really well structured boxes that make it difficult for your cake to have an accident. Very sturdy boxes. And then the lady asked me if it was for a birthday, it is, and offered me free candles and a happy birthday sign to place on the box! Super sweet. Just the best! No extra charge for the happy birthday sign and candles or for the sturdy box. This is exceptional service and care for their customers. The atmosphere inside is lively in the sense that it's busy. Blue Windmill is a gem in Gardena that completely obliterates most cakes in the area. I ordered a slice of blueberry cake and will 100% go there again if I'm ever in the area. Their sponge cake is more moist, softer and more consistent than any of the big bakeries, their cream is incredibly soft and has a subtle sweetness so when you bite into the cake, it feels like the cream is melting into your mouth. This place is wonderful! Very clean, tons of parking, and the staff is very helpful! They didn't even make fun of me when I asked where the gathering baskets were, despite it being right in front of my face. They have a vast selection to choose from, and it is all very fresh! The only thing I didn't much care for was the cornbread, but maybe that's just because I had it by itself as opposed to pairing it with some sort of southern cooking. Everything else, though? *Chef kiss* I got: Sweetened condensed milk rusk, Romeo Cookies, Healthy Rice Cake, Sweet potato pie, and the red bean filled custard bun. The rusk was perfect, and not something I have seen before in socal. The Romeo cookies were downright addictive, and unique! The sweet potato pie, while not exactly a pie, was excellent. The Healthy Rice Cake had so much going on that it was difficult to pinpoint flavors, but I still enjoyed it for the chewiness and density of it. A great snack! And finally, the red bean filled Custard Bun: perfect for breakfast, which is how I had it! It paired wonderfully with my black tea! I love this place! They have such good bread options and I love it so much! Also, on google it says its closed but it actually just has a different name: paran poong cha! I came around 10-15 minutes before closing and I was thankful to see they still had a couple of breads left. I got their soboro bread, a slice of their roll cake, the chestnut rusk, and their soft white bread. They also had a couple breads I had never heard of, like mammoth bread which was a giant slice of soboro bread with redbean and cream inside! Their white bread is literally so soft and delicious, I ate some of it on its own without anything on it. Their soboro bread was the right amount of sweetness.
