Cake Kobo staff over the phone was extremely nice and patience with my order. They got my order for a birthday cake 100% correct. The only thing I was confused was it's located in a Japanese Grocery market. I don't believe I see the name "Cake Kobo" unless I missed it. Took just an extra minute to verify if I was in the right place (I'm not local.) Cake was spongey and delicious, highly recommend giving their selection a try too as it looked fresh and tempting! I lied. I ended up picking up a strawberry croissant cream thing and it was the best. It's simply in a grocery store so don't expect to sit down and eat it there. I called to Cake Kobo to order a Strawberry cake and I spoke with Mercedes. She was very nice and patient with me. She took my order even though she didn't work the bakery. I picked up the cake the following day and the lady at the bakery was also beautiful and nice. The customer service reminded me of the customer service in Japan. The cake was delicious. I knew it would be since it's from a Japanese bakery. They make it with a great soul. The taste was light and not heavy. Here's what I've had there. Cheesecake: Probably the best thing there, it's more dense than i expect and the mouth feel is a bit off. But for the prices, it works in a pinch. Cream cake: soft cake with custard cream in the center. Custard is pretty straight forward, nothing mind blowing. again for the price it's a pretty decent value. Cream puffs in the chilled refrigerated section (they sell these at all Nijiya locations): pretty meh for the quantity but you get what you pay for. I used to look forward to Cake Kobo's Christmas cakes every year. Unfortunately the quality has been getting worse. I am so disappointed that I can no longer recommend their cakes. This year the cake and filling reminded me of a strawberry twinky. The cake was dry, not moist and fluffy like a Japanese cake should be. It was around $2 which is quite a steal compared to the other places nearby. Though I didn't love it, I found a multitude of other goodies that won't break the bank that look just as tasty. It was more than I wanted to pay, but I was there and after fighting for parking (there is a church or a kind of religious building next door having an event) I was like why not? I haven't seen a fruit cocktail/mixed fruit cake in ages so I got one! The frosting was pink with a light strawberry flavor and the cake was vanilla and not too moist or thick - almost like sponge cake. Not to be partial - but I love Asian bakeries because their desserts are light and not sugar-sickening. Like JJ's or King's you can eat a few slices without getting too full. A combination of light, fluffy, dense, and not too sweet, with a bit of a gelatinous glaze on top! Mmm...so good!! Olivia Z. and I got a Napolean, Chocolate Eclair, and Strawberry Cream Puff for Dessert. I only tried the Eclair and Cream Puff. Both were exactly what I wanted. Sweet, creamy, and yummy. The full cakes looked tempting. If I needed a whole cake or fruit tart for a party, this would be an easy choice. The bakery has individual and loaves of baked breads. We came late in the day and some of the more popular items were clearly sold out. In the warm food section, they have Fried Chicken Kara-age, Tempura Fry Pancakes, Croquettes, Katsu, and such. We split a Regular Croquette and a Pumpkin Croquette. She liked the pumpkin most while I enjoyed the regular more. Either way, we got a great deal, because we were there at exactly 8:00 p.m. when all the premade Fried Foods go on sale for 50% off. If you live close by, still haven't figured out what is for dinner, and it is close to 8 p.m., there are probably fewer better deals than this 1/2 off one at Cake Kobo. You can check out at Cake Kobo or at the main Nijiya registers. We ended up buying three different times and each time the ladies behind the counter at Cake Kobo were especially patient and helpful. This bakery has quite a selection of pastries and cakes. It is located inside of the Japanese supermarket Nijiya. It will be all the way to the left as you enter through the sliding door entrance. Before I placed an order for their full cake, I decided to try all slices of the cakes that they make in full size. Of out of all of the cakes I tried, I really enjoyed the tofu cheesecake and the strawberry shortcake. I know, tofu cheesecake sounds odd, but it really is worth trying. It isn't overly sweet and not heavy, but has the taste of a traditional cheesecake. If you are not one for trying something different, I would recommend the strawberry shortcake. The cream tastes so light and fresh and they have fresh strawberries on the cake and in the cake. If you order in advance, they will ask if it's for a birthday or not, because if it's for a birthday, they will ask if you would like to upgrade for the occasion. I believe they charge slightly more, but they do a little more decoration with the cream on the cake rather than a simple design. I ordered this cake twice, one for my mother's birthday and one for my girlfriend's birthday. I had both of the cakes with the birthday upgrade, but honestly, it's not necessary. Overall, the cake was tasty, it was not super sweet like most American cakes, but still sweet enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. The cream was very light and "airy," so if you finish all of the cream with the cake, I don't blame you! The cake was light and soft, so it meshes well with the fresh cream. There are a variety of cakes and pastries to choose from at this location. I really love that there is so much to choose from and there are people behind the counter than can set you up so that you can eat at their dining area as well.
