When you go to The Blue Whale, you're literally stepping into a piece of gay history. For generations, it's been the Cheers of Fire Island. There are so many stories tied to this place, including its role in the beginnings of the Fire Island Invasion. It's one of those spots that actually means something to the community. I come to Fire Island every year with my friends, and while I've never tried the food, that's honestly not why people come here. Everyone shows up for low tea, which is basically happy hour starting at 4 PM. It starts picking up around 6, and that's when it hits. You'll see every gay from NYC who's on the island for the week, the weekend, or even just the day. The best part about tea here is that it's your first real look at who's around. It's super social and makes it easy to connect with people. If you're going with a group, lean into it and do a themed tea with coordinated outfits. Nothing is too corny or off-limits. That's part of the Fire Island tradition. They also host drag shows during the week with Bubbles, which are always a good time. And you really never know who you'll run into. Over the years I've seen Milk, Billy Porter, Andy Cohen, and a bunch of Broadway people just casually there. Of course, you have to get the punch. It's a mix of multiple liquors and juices, and somehow no one ever finishes more than one. If you do, just know you're signing up for a brutal hangover. Only downside is how packed it gets during tea. It can take a minute to get a drink, so just go in expecting a little bit of a wait. read more

Really nice atmosphere. The brunch menu is a little small, but the options are pretty good. My friends and I got a carafe of mimosas, they were $42 so not bad. There's basically a full bottle of prosecco and triple sec in it, so extremely strong for a good price. My brunch burger was pretty good, the burger was a little over cooked but overall good. I took a day trip in the heat of summer to Fire Island via ferry. I brought 5 bottles of water and my refillable yeti. I walked from the pines to the grove and back. Naturally, I ran out of water. While waiting for the ferry, I stopped in to see if I could have a cup of water or if they, at the bar, could fill my bottle. They said NO. The manager was so snooty, as if he was looking down on me, an old man. Who denies a person water in the heat of summer? This place does. Avoid them like the plague..... read more

Low tea, High tea. One thing I know for sure is they DO NOT serve tea at a tea dance. Billed as a restaurant and bar as well as the original birth place of The Tea Dance, Blue Whale is really more of a social club for speedo wearing fashionistas and their admirers. The low tea dance is not much more than a cock(tail) party with a DJ. I'll admit it is fun to watch the ferry arrive loaded with what the boys at the bar refer to as "fresh meat". The eyecandy is amazing and the drinks are strong so it gets 5 stars as a bar/club. During lunch and late dinner hours (10p) the dance floor and outside deck become a patio style dining room. I would say this is a good place to avoid if you want to have a meal. The menu is uninspired and most everything we ordered was bland. I'll have to deduct two stars for boring food. Tea for two? Okay, here's what you need to know before eating anywhere in the Pines at Fire Island. Demand exceeds supply by a huge amount, so there is zero incentive for restaurant owners to provide good value or excellent service. Everywhere you go you will wait, the service will be spotty and you may or may not get what you actually ordered. So if you're in that frame of mind, you'll understand the three star rating I gave Blue Whale. I had lunch here with a friend and overall the experience was so-so. Took awhile to track down a waiter...took even longer to get something to drink. However, the waiter was friendly, though absent minded. We both had burgers, which were a little overdone but still flavorful. The whole experience was unmemorable but not awful and it ain't cheap. Slow service, food not prepared correctly....in any other scenario this would have been a two star review at best, but for Fire Island Pines, this represents fine dining. You just can't go to Fire Island Pines and expect a Danny Meyer-quality dining experience. Heck, you can't expect an Applebees-quality dining experience. Service on the island (this part, anyway) just screams "meh, we don't really care because what other options do you have?". Since the service was friendly with no attitude, I'd give this three stars. Plus, low tea is fun so overall this isn't a horrible place. I look at it like cable TV...when there is not much competition, there's no incentive to provide an exceptional experience because the sheep will keep on coming. Our orders were delivered about 20 minutes apart leaving my partner the opportunity to finish his meal before mine was delivered. Went here for dinner with some friends after tea and got a table on the patio. All of the food here is decent, but definitely overpriced. Some of the highlights were the chicken sliders and the fries with garlic aioli, but nothing else really stood out. Overall, the setting is fantastic--on the deck outside overlooking the harbor. I went to Fire Island for the first time on Sunday July 22nd. I had a ABSOLUTE BLAST at the Blue Whale, I didn't want to leave. Josh the bartender was super nice and friendly. Not only did he take care of my thirst, he helped me look for a souviner t-shirt to take home as a momento. He could have just pointed me in the right direction, but instead he took time from his free time to take me to the different shops. Much Mahalo for that Josh. I didn't try any food, but be sure that I will next time. If any of my friends are headed to Fire Island, I will be telling them to ask for Josh at the Blue Whale when they get there. read more

Restaurant itself is two stars. The food is pretty bad. I had the Steak and Eggs. That was pretty bad. There is no where else to go but they have bottomless mimosas. However, the mimosas are basically orange juice with a splash of champagne. So don't be afraid to tell your waiter to add more champagne! We went for the drag show, that was amazing! Don't eat the food. Just drink and enjoy the show. For 50 dollars a head and 18 bucks for water taxi, it is a pretty big commitment to do this show. Expensive. Food was okay. Service was ridiculous. The service was so odd that it was comical. It was as though our waiter had not only never waited a table before, but had actually never been to a restaurant before in his life, and was generally confused about how things work. For example, he thought my friend ordered a bottle of wine for just himself rather than the table. And after I said I wanted a cocktail he thought that was my order, not realizing that there are many types of cocktails. The food was fine. Nothing was especially good or bad, but all met expectations. We asked for bread and the host told us that because it was a tapas restaurant they don't serve bread, which is just not true of any other tapas restaurant I've ever been to. We were also presented with a menu of only red wines, and when we asked our waiter about it, he seemed confused about the existence of white wine in general. We then, apparently, bought the last two bottles of white wine in the entire restaurant. read more

I mean, really. What *is* this place? After a delightful ferry ride surrounded by a menagerie of pocket sized pups, colorful birds in cages the size of my apartment, and more Prada overnight bags than you've ever seen in your life, you're greeted by gorgeous, tanned, designer sunglass-clad men waving at you from the Blue Whale. Low tea, it's called, although I'm pretty sure the only tea you can get is of the Long Island variety. Hrm, maybe this is where the terminology comes from? A giant patio opens on to the indoor dance floor, complete with a blue whale mosaic. But there's nothing kitschy about the decor here: everything in this commercial complex (as well as this segment of the island in general) is clean and modern. Well, except for the crazy lady who showed up to dance with her huge flags while attempting to hold her poor Yorkie at the same time. That was a sight. There seems to be a DJ accompanying every facet of the island but the real dancing doesn't happen here: save that for middle tea or later on at the Sip and Twirl. No, low tea is like a big gay reunion where everyone's happy to be there and curious who else came out to the island for the weekend. It's a meet and greet with a hell of a lot of alcohol, and I loved it. Once you've got your cocktail (and in my experience, it didn't take too long to get one, especially if you went to the inside bar), stake your claim out on the patio and enjoy the view(s). read more

Had a really strange and unpleasant experience recently. I left my credit card--TOTALLY my fault. I was ready to go through the hassle of cancelling and replacing it; but I was on vacation so that was going to be an extra hardship. So I stopped by the next night, as I have at bars before, and asked: "Hey, did I leave my credit card here last night?" [And it had only been a single drink the night before: this was me being forgetful, not drunk.] The bartender asked me to write down my name and he said he would "call it in." I came back 10 minutes later, and he had forgotten (and lost the paper), so I did it again, and he handed it to the food runner to call in. After a minute he got my attention and confirmed that "No" they did not have my card. I was concerned. "Do you want to speak to the manager?" he asked me? "No," I said, now realizing maybe I was mistaken and I'm wasting everyone's time. I stepped away and checked my accounts to see what was going on. But there was a charge from the prior day for a single drink--with no tip--meaning yes I had left it here and they had run it and hadn't even tipped themselves. So, armed with this info, I went back and told the bartender I would take them up on the offer to speak to a manager. Five minutes later, a manager comes out and I see the bartender pointing me out. I met the manager at the end of the bar where he immediately starts with: "We have NO legal obligation to hold your credit card." Huh? Did I say they did? No! I asked a simple question: "Do you HAVE my credit card?" If you want to cut it up at the end of the night, fine. Just say that. "We have NO legal obligation to hold your credit card," he repeated twice more. He wanted to know why I was demanding to speak to him. Remember: his staff volunteered that they'd happily get a manager; I never asked. Here's the greatest irony: I finally looked down and realized he was literally holding my credit card. I'm just baffled. Hold credit cards, or don't. Give them back, or don't. But don't hold them, then yell at a patron who asks for it back. It seemed to defy logic. But I guess reading these reviews, this place usually does... What an unpleasant experience. read more

Super outrageous, super over-priced and super watered-down drinks. Two margaritas later and I still don't have a buzz... hum... The best place in town to seen and be-seen at high/dance t-party... but that's about it. The best place to watch the new meat... I mean... people coming from the mainland in the ferries. Also a good spot to do great people watching! Next time, I will bring a little flask with alcohol and refill the watered-down served one. And wear tight shorts and a tight shirt... thus allowing some hunks and creeps either drunk or 'high' on something to stare and grab while dancing. read more

The Blue Whale is always the scene of Low Tea in the Pines (not much dancing, but plenty of drinking!), but it's also - as I learned in my third summer of visiting - a pretty decent place to have dinner. If you're willing to dine late (after they can get set up after Low Tea dies down), it's great! While the staff wasn't able to give us a table for about 45 minutes after our 9:15 Sunday evening arrival, there were a couple of seats available at the bar, so we took a seat there and had a very nice meal. Pork chops were good, and the chicken was really good. Cocktails were, of course, strong. From what I hear, this year's menu and service levels are considerably higher than years past, and I'm glad to see people who are ready to raise the bar on service levels in the Pines. I have had dinner two times this summer at the newly managed Blue Whale. Dinner was very good both times. The porterhouse for two was cooked exactly how we ordered. Nicely sized shrimp in the shrimp cocktail. Last night, they had a special fried chicken thigh and pork belly frittata appetizer which was out of this world. The portion was huge so my friends were able to sample it as well. My friends had the tuna and grouper dishes. They both enjoyed those dishes. The only downside is trying to get a reservation. No one ever picks up the phone. And no one returns your voicemail. I had to visit in person to make the reservation. And the person helping me wrote the reservation on a pad of paper -- no reservation book. I was afraid they'd forget my reservation, but they did not. Also, although they open at 9pm for dinner, they ask for reservations at 9:15 or 9:30pm to give them time to setup dinner after Low Tea. Despite the difficulties in ensuring a reservation, I recommend trying the Almond managed Blue Whale. Note that both of my dinners were during the weekend. ** July 2011 Update ** In mid-July, my partner and I had the porterhouse for two again since we enjoyed it so much last year. As usual, we ordered it rare. It arrived a bit more than medium. No sign of any red or pink. They also did not have any bread that night. Yes, Arnab M., I did enjoy my Turkey burger. The overall menu was pretty good -- light and snacky. Granted, this is the ultimate gay paradise, and anything here that's not in liquid form is easily overlooked. The outdoor patio is great -- you get a view of the harbor and the queens coming in off the ferry. As a matter of fact, I saw Carson Kressley and his entourage getting back on at some point and could DEFINITELY hear his voice clear across the harbor. Girrrrrrrl, turn it down a notch! This place is terrible as far as restaurants go but a curious institution nonetheless. The service is awful at best, the food is OK (when it arrives an hour after ordering it). The only good thing about this place is its location right on the harbor, where you can watch the crowd go by on boat and foot. If being served by spacey waiters drugged out on Tina and God knows what else piques your interest then go here three or four times in one weekend. I'm guessing most others probably end up here by process of elimination--there just isn't much else. I've been here several times. My first experience went something like this... Finally get a table, a *crazy crazy crazy* waiter comes, barks at us that we need to quickly decide what we want to order before everyone else orders, but we CANNOT order drinks yet because the kitchen will get backed up. We were given about 4 minutes before he came back and demanded to take our food order or else it would be over an hour before we got anything. About 30 or 40 minutes later our appetizer arrived--mind you our crazy waiter still did NOT want us to order our drinks yet. Then our main course came. We finally demanded that we order drinks, which arrived just before we were finished eating our main course. The food itself that time was pretty disgusting--cold and not really what we thought we were getting. The second time we were told to go order drinks at the bar and then they'd have our table.. Perfect... We ordered and it took about an hour to get our food... Though we weren't in any hurry so this was OK, yet it really wasn't very busy there wasn't even a wait. The next time we sat down and waited about 30 minutes and still hadn't heard any peep of a waiter... We went inside and asked if we could order but they told us they'd find our waiter. We waited at least another 20 minutes and went in again, this time they let us order... (Also they had ran out of French fries so we had to get side salads that were covered in a very garlicky/oniony dressing...who runs out of fries!) So basically go here for the drinks maybe but I'd go elsewhere for the food unless you have all day to sit around. read more

I went to this establishment last night looking to buy a drink after a beautiful day on the beach. Bartenders at both bars looked at us in the face and refuse to serve us. I hate to believe it was because I wasn't a gay man. The last place I expect any type of discrimination would be at a gar bar!? Needless to say we got the message so my friend I left and spent our money elsewhere! Came out here over the weekend to check out the renovations and check in with some of my boys who are working the bars! AWESOME experience, the food is being done by Almond (the same guys who have the space in Flatiron and out in Bridgehampton) what a turn around from past years. The place is upgraded for certian but preserved a lot of the old charms. The thing I noticed the most was that the service was outstanding, not like years past when it was more about the waiters being seen and less about the waiters being servers. We got our drinks in no time, had a great time chatting up Nate our studly server at brunch, and enjoyed an awesome meal compliments of Chef Jason Weiner. It was also great to see Antonio - a familiar face from the Flatiron spot out there working the crowds as usual. A very enthusiastic YES to returning to this venue! Its obviously a boys town - so be sure and bring your guy with you! As a woman you'll probably want to head out to Ocean Bay or Cherry Grove after Low T, but be sure to leave you boy behind!! read more

DO NOT EAT HERE!! I know there aren't many choices here in the Pines but whatever you do avoid this place. Waiters are terrible, they don't know the specials and the food is lousy. There were four of us at dinner on a Thursday night. Most of the food was ok however one dish we had was lousy. It was the Mac and cheese, it wasn't good, it was oily and the cheese wasn't melted, no big deal it happens. We took 2 fork fulls and told the waiter we didn't want it. When the bill came they refused to take off the Mac and cheese. The waiter asked if we wanted to see the manager. We said we just wanted the Mac and Cheese taken off, so the manager came over and said because there were a few fork fulls missing, it was the owners policy not to issue a refund. Also the Mgr David was extremely rude. WHAT?? I hope I run into the owner PJ one day so I can ask him if it was worth losing 4 longtime customers over a lousy Mac and cheese. Our bill was over $250.00. I can't believe taking off one small dish was a problem. LIKE I SAID BEFORE AVOID THIS PLACE!! I will be letting all my friends and anyone that will listen know all about this. By the way they also were not capable of splitting the bill down the middle 2 ways. Although it sounds delicious from the menu description, it was dry and bland. The Sunday brunch drink special is overpriced. My friend and I were on the Island and decided to try this place. A very average looking place also. They announced everything was Tapas style. I honestly do not think they actually know what Tapas is. The food is mediocre at best and the portions extremely small given the sky high prices. French fries for $16.00 is outrageous. I've been coming to the Fire Island Pines since 1994 and I have never seen a girl behind the bar at the Blue Whale (low tea). Service totally sucked, we waited exactly 14 unfortunate minutes to get drinks. There was a line waiting all the way down to the stairs for the cute russian bartender to serve us drinks but the girl bartender was not busy at all. For me as a gay man i would rather tip the male bartender. I've always thought the Pines is the gay resort, girls and lesbians are next in the Grove. Everyone was bitc*ing about it, no one wanted to be served by that girl and after all we went to Sip and Twirl. Bunch of people left to Sip and Twirl too. I am so disappointed with the whole thing and sadly I am not alone. I feel like they are trying to change this community into mixed and than str8??? WTF!!!... The music sucked, there were 4 girls and 2 guys dancing inside, no one else. I remember low tea being packed even during the week: now it seems like it's dying... The whole energy is weird. The other day i went to the pool and the girl was behind the bar working there again reading her book. I felt like I was interrupting her reading when I asked her for my soda: perhaps she was doing me a great favor, I dunno. I have nothing against girls, but when someone is behind the bar at least be polite to customers, not look bored or bothered. Again no one was there, so I left the pool, and went to my friends beach house where about 35-40 guys hang out. Again, everyone talked about it. I am so sorry I sound so critical, but it's not only me. Our whole community is talking about it, we are little pissed and more of all - disappointed. I am pretty sure more reviews like this (if not more critical) will be coming soon or shortly after the season ends. Blue Whale dinner was fine. Was on Fire Island for the 4th of July weekend and decided to come here for Low Tea, since that was what everyone was doing. Drinks were made well, still pricey, but they were at least made to my liking. Bartenders were okay, some had snobbish attitudes, which was rude. Even ruder were the restaurant workers and the "host". Me and my group was standing by the bar and this rude host came over and shoo'ed us, no excuse me, no nothing, and said that the restaurant is opening and we have to move away from the bar while he moves in his podium. That was EXTREMELY un-professional and rude, and we are customers of the establishment, that's now how you treat us. The guy who was setting us the tables were also very rude. This place needs a attitude makeover and the queens working here need a dose of reality. Until that change is bought, I won't be returning here. read more

Ok so to start, the brunch menu says 49.99 for an entree and "open bar." They fail to mention the alleged open bar is only bloody Mary's and mimosas. My friends and I all got the eggs Benedict and I have NEVER had such foul tasting eggs benny in my life. I didn't even know you could mess that up. I'm usually very easy going about food (especially for bottomless brunch at that) but actually asked the waiter if I could switch it out for something else, being I barely ate it. He said no, unless I wanted to pay for an entire new meal. Then, during the drag show, one of the drag queens took approximately 15 dollars out of my hand that I did not have out to tip. We had read about the new chef so we were eager to try it out. First, we stopped by during the day to make a reservation for Sunday dinner. They took a reservation for 7pm by writing a note on an advertisement they had lying around. They took my phone number. We learned of course that tea dance isn't even over at 7pm on Sunday when we came by, but they hadn't bothered to call. We came back at 9pm when they opened. We waited a considerable time before we waved over someone we later learned was a manager, who took our order in a rather perfunctory manner. The waiter came by a bit later and said it would be wise to let him know what we had ordered. After my partner's glass of wine came, another glass was delivered, because the order had been put in twice. We saw bread being delivered to other tables, and asked about it, and were told it would be right out from the oven. We were never served or offered bread after that. The main courses started arriving at the same time as some of the appetizers, and the waiter told us it was because the manager had put our order in without indicating what should come first. We ended up getting all our food at the same time, appetizers and main courses. The desserts were comped because of the badly timed meal. Was the food good? Yes. Was the experience one I could recommend? Hardly. Restaurant meals on Fire Island have to be evaluated in context - you are a captive audience on an island with seasonal staff in a vacation town. But at these prices, I'd rather get something from the Pines Pantry and sit on the dock for a casual meal than give my money for such a lousy experience. read more

Fire Island is gay summer camp, and Low Tea is its casual, fashionable, pop-smiling soul. Every day around six, the Blue Whale kicks off a great, feel-good party in Low Tea. No sedate tables at teatime! The dining room makes way for a small dance floor -- put your hands in the air for the Greatest Hits of Gay! -- while the outdoor space is reserved for slightly-lower-energy socializing, gadding about, and waving to the ferry passengers arriving here or returning to the real world. It's a happy place. Later in the evening, the Blue Whale offers among the best restaurant fare in either Cherry Grove or the Pines. Keep in mind that this is a pretty low bar, but the trend has been toward increasing quality over the last few years. Perhaps it's not too much to hope that ingredients from the new Citarella a few doors down the pier will help the Blue Whale take its food up one more notch. read more

A group of us decided to stop by this establishment for a cocktail on a Sunday afternoon while waiting for the next ferry. We sat down and were told by the manager that that particular side of the restaurant was not open but the other side would be open in 10 mins. We moved over to the other side and patiently waited until they opened. We sat there for nearly 20 minutes and not even one server came over to greet us. I don't know if we didn't appear to be worth their time or they were just plain ignorant and decided to not even acknowledge us, but this is NOT how a business should operate! Most of us sitting there waiting are servers so yes, it would've been absolutely worth their time. Wow, what a place. I went because I had several people I know say how good the food was this year. They also told me it was expensive. It should be listed as $$$$ not $$. I don't like complicated menus, but they had 8 main courses and three of them were sold out. They didn't even have chicken on the menu. They did have a nice $27 burger. My companion had a $17 mozzarella salad and I had a $38 tuna main (the size of an appetizer in other places). The food was mediocre at best, the service was not great, but as expected. The prices, well, that's a whole other story. I'd just leave it by saying, stay away, it's not worth it at all. read more

Low tea, high tea, and then brunch the next morning. That would sum up my experience at the Blue Whale. Firstly, there is NO TEA served at the tea dances, but there is quite the serving of eye candy. I think if you ordered tea, you'd get a hunky man in a Speedo grabbing your crotch, which is a fine alternative, given that I really don't like tea anyway. The music is fabulous, the space is even better, since there is an indoor dance floor, and a pretty expansive patio that makes for a pleasant evening under the sun and moon, cocktails in hand. I would give the Blue Whale 5 stars if their brunch menu wasn't so limited and if their service wasn't soooooo slow. Thankfully, my bagel with lox and cream cheese was delicious, and Eric P. and Glenn L. enjoyed their veggie burger and chicken sandwich as well. Though, part of that might have been the fact that we hadn't eaten a meal since breakfast the day before. Surely, I"ll be back here, and if it's for food, it will probably be because of the outdoor seating and the lack of any other options. read more
