Shama's Indian restaurant had been a regular haunt for locals on this site for many decades - I always remember it for the diamond shaped menu on the wall with the wonky writing! Cheap and cheerful Indian dining would sum up its food. Khan's took over this site last year and the decor is certainly much more contemporary and they've added the ability to open out the front of the restaurant on nice days. It has a sister restaurant in Lavender Hill, London. My friend and I were sad to see an institution like Shama's go after so many years but we were excited to try this new place. The menu is more conventional than somewhere like Cinnamon Spice in town. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the new decor and we found the flavours a bit bland and the dishes didn't really stand out from one another. That's a real shame as the staff were really nice and we were offered a complimentary liqueur at the end of our meal. Sadly, first impressions count and I can't see myself returning here in a hurry, not with Cinnamon Spice down the road.

Sadly the spice party was a little lacking. I had a jalfrazi and it could have been a lot Spicer. Non the less it was very good

As time goes on, I'm having to travel further afield to find new places to eat at and Yelp about…read morebefore my salsa lesson on Friday evening. Tonight I went over to west Ewell. Tamarind Spice occupies the site of the much-loved White Castle Indian restaurant in Ewell. The refurbishment has left the new restaurant with a modern look with split level dining and purple mood uplighting This modern touch extends to the ordering with the waiter using a futuristic touch screen portable device. My mango lassi and popaddom were a good standard and should be the basic minimum for any decent Indian restaurant. It's the condiments which make the popaddom experience and the ones here did the trick. I started with king prawn puree. The puree wasn't perhaps straight out of the fryer, being a little chewy rather than totally light and crispy. However, the king prawns on top were great, not overcooked and having a nice blend of herbs and spices for a kick. There were quite a few interesting and new dishes in the specialities section. In the end, I settled for the lamb shatkora, described as a spicy dish from Bengal cooked with exotic citrus fruit, even though the waiter was unable to identify the exact citrus fruits used. Strangely, despite the restaurant name, there is a distinct lack of tamarind mentioned on the menu. The dish arrived with a lot of generous chunks of tender lamb. The sauce was well balanced with the citrus flavour being well balanced with an aromatic woody base. Only slight problem was in obtaining my bill and paying, with the many waiters being great at serving the food but not so keen to collect the payment! A worthy replacement for the White Castle

After our last attempted visit, things could only get better for Paprika…read more Friday night means pre-salsa food. It was a sweltering hot evening and we noticed that Paprika had tables set up outside on their deck and the door was open. Despite our bad experience previously, we decided to ask to look at a menu and it looked promising. So we took a table outside. My mango lassi was exemplary, packed full of mango flavour and the chutneys with the popoddams were yummy. We decided to go with some unfamiliar dishes - the chicken paprika and a lamb dish whose name escapes me. Both were full of flavour and well enjoyed. During our visit, we spoke to the manager about our previous experience and he was very apologetic. They're also going to post a menu outside from this week. So a reprieve and we look forward to trying more dishes here.

Located in the heart of Ewell Village, the atmosphere is amazing with extremely friendly staff waiting on you hand and foot. I would definately recommend this place to anybody who would like to try Indian cusine for the first time, or even if you are a regular and just want to try somewhere a bit new and different. If you have never had Indian before, my personal recommendation is the Chicken Korma with Pilau Rice - very tasty and not at all spicy.

Sometimes you walk into a restaurant, and just get a bad feeling. This was one of those times. I…read morewalked in with my husband, and the two members of staff (one male & one female) just looked at each other, for about 30 awkward seconds, before coming to seat us. Despite the door of the restaurant being open, it was almost as if they didn't want customers. So we instantly got an uncomfortable feeling of being unwelcome. Then the female member of staff came to our table and proceeded to undo our napkins for us - had we come in with our 3 year-old son, and had she been opening his napkin, I could've understood.....even thanked her. But she was opening napkins for 40 & 47 year-olds ! Hmmm, how do you tell someone that you'll open your napkin if & when you'd like it, and...well after you've ordered your drinks & meal ? The same member of staff asked if we'd like drinks, without giving us a drinks menu - so I asked for one. My husband picked something straightforward it seems, by choosing a Cobra. I asked for a 175ml glass of rosé. The manager (sorry, I'm assuming, but this member of staff did appear more senior) then came over to us to explain that he didn't have the rosé that I'd selected, and asked me to choose another wine. He said he had both other rosés on the drinks menu, so I picked one of those. 8 minutes after bringing my husband his Cobra (but, with him unable to 'chink' with me, feeling unable to drink it), and lots of rummaging & rustling later, the second (younger) male member of staff delivered a glass of wine to the table. The glass was not 175ml - but 250ml instead - and it was RED wine ! When I said that the glass was larger & red, rather than rosé, the chap mumbled that they didn't have the second rosé I'd chosen, so they just decided to bring me a glass of red instead !!! At this point, we walked out of the restaurant, neither of us having touched our drinks..... I wouldn't recommend this eatery, at least until staff have undertaken a lot of customer service training.
