While this Blue Man Group production isn't nearly as big as the one I saw in Las Vegas, for logical reasons, I found this one to be both intimate and just as magical. Having never been to the Charles Playhouse before, I had no idea that the venue was entirely dedicated to that production and it shows; from the second you step foot in there, you notice some of the decorative touches which are the bread and butter of Blue Man Group: the pipes. They are everywhere, from walls and ceilings, in the hallways and in the main room. It's a neat touch. Upon arriving and after an usher seated us, the show started. Luckily for us, they had just updated it and it was somewhat different than the one in Las Vegas that I had seen. This one talked about social media, and iPads. They even had large-than-life mockups and the show does manage to bring up some interesting points. It's rather witty and clever... even whimsical. All in all this was well worth the money spent. If you have never been to Blue Man Group, you should be ashamed. I plan on going back soon. At some point. I love it. PS: If you don't hustle out of there upon the show's ending you can have an opportunity to have your picture taken with some of the cast. Just a heads up. I am extremely biased and probably shouldn't be writing a review (I cocktail waitressed for BMG & Sheer Madness back in college). BUT. I worked 3-5 days a week at the Chuck for 3 years and probably watched the show a thousand times, and never got tired of it (hello, dream job). Literally. It has something for everyone, is always slightly different and tailored to the audience that day/night, the people who work there are fantastic, and I never saw a single unhappy audience member leave the theater. I hear they've updated the show recently and I bet it's just as good if not better than back in my day. Go, you won't be disappointed. read more

I have seen the Blue Man Group on tour at East Lansing, MI. I liked that show more, it was more focused on musical instruments and entertainment. I loved the performance, entertained the whole time. The first few rows are the wet zone and you have to wear ponchos, so don't come too dressed up. The blue men like to beat on a lot of drums covered with paint and there is a lot of splashing. The ending to the show was just one big messy party. I had so much fun and felt really energized when I left. I feel like I can't say too much or it'll destroy the surprise for everyone else. The line leaving the theater takes awhile because everyone stops to take a picture with the blue man group. I was able to get a discount on my tickets by donating a pint of blood at MGH. Yes it was my main motivation to donate blood. I think if you keep your eye out, you can find blue man group tickets at a discount as it is a little pricey for admission. Totally worth it! read more

Both times I went in Boston the show was the same. Regardless, I liked it the second time as well. In terms of seating, it is best to be on the bottom floor because you will be able to interact with the show a lot more. A lot goes on in the aisles of the bottom floor, so it is your best chance to be up close and personal with the blue men. The show is performance art. The musical parts are my favorite. All of the blue men are great drummers. The show makes comments on the way society is, and they're all true. It is also quite funny at times. It is a good show for anyone ages 7-60. One thing- I sat in be poncho seats and left without getting hit by anything. It is hit or miss whether you will actually need the poncho. If you're off to the left you will probably come out clean. read more

Sorry but this is a show for kids... If you are not a child I don't see how you can find this entertaining... They pretty much destroyed the stage eating Twinkies and Cap'n Crunch... And as an adult all I can think about was who the hell is going to clean that mess LOL... After a while the noise of the drums was getting to me... The music and guitars sounded like something from nickelodeon... And just annoying LOL... I would think for the price of these tickets you would get better... I was astonished at how skimpy the show was. For the price and the hype, I was expecting better than an overblown club skit filled with juvenile humor. What a letdown! Initially, the theatre took me by surprise. I had marveled at how such a "hit" show could run for so long until I got inside; the place is remarkably small (just over 500 capacity) and the show suffers for it. This limits the size and magnitude of the staging and results in a strikingly small performance space. They make up for it by engaging the audience and playing up the intimate seating but I think it still falls short in the grand performance aspect. The music and wacky instruments are the odd standouts from the "show" itself. Those parts are entertaining albeit not terribly impressive in terms of technical difficulty. (I grew up with a talented drummer so that influences and informs me a bit here.) Even so, these were the best parts of the experience for me. The rest of the show consisted of gross-out humor, mild innuendo, and literally 10-15 minutes spent toilet papering the theatre while the PA blared euphemisms for one's backside. It's no surprise that about a third of the theatre was filled with kids under 12 who were thoroughly entertained. I, however, was not. I see how the show attempts to relay the message of social disconnect due to technology and related themes however it comes across in fits and starts, never quite getting past declarative statements and jokes to be the performance spectacle that it has touted itself to be over the years. If the show writing were as polished as the bar area outside the theatre, it would have come across much better. Bottom line: Kids will love it. Most adults will tolerate it. Some sober and most inebriated adults will probably enjoy it. There are much better performances in town to spend your money and time on on any given day. read more

I bought my boyfriend tickets to this as a Christmas gift and decided to get them for a show on our anniversary (two for one gift=bonus!) After buying them I was worried I had made a mistake. He loves music but is more of a heavy metal kind of guy, and he had never expressed an interest in any type of theater. My concern was stupid because he looooooooved it. I got us tickets in the fourth row (poncho section) and picked two seats at the end of the row (near the aisle) because I knew they interact with the crowd and was hoping they would hassle my boyfriend. Great show, fun time, and the boyfriend did end up getting hassled by the Bluemen (he made himself a pretty easy target but that's all I'll say as not to ruin the show for anyone else). In response to the person below me not understanding the need for a poncho...I'm sure some people do get spattered with stuff. My boyfriend and I ended up ditching our ponchos because two people in our row got up and down a million times during the show and our ponchos got all messed up and ripped. When we were walking out I found banana in my hair! Or I hope it was banana. Whatever it was I have no idea how it got in there...I'm guessing it got passed along during the end of the show... One other thing--if you have a problem with your personal space or plan to go with someone who does, I would suggest getting seats further from the stage. My boyfriend is a good sport but I know certain people who would be really freaked out by what they did to him. Go, have fun, experience it atleast once. Fun for all ages! read more

I love Blue Man group. I can't describe them, I won't even try, but I love the PVC drum machines--it has such a wonderful tone. This is a fun production and is well-worth your time. HOWEVER!!! The one "but" is that this is not the place to go if anyone in your party has MS or epilepsy or otherwise had issues with strobe lights and the like. They do use them. read more

I somehow have seen this show 3 times, but I only paid for it once, so I figure it's okay =P They were all very different experiences, despite the show itself not really changing ever. Definitely see this show once, it is exciting, entertaining, engaging, and probably unlike anything you've seen in a theatre. More of an art-commentary-type show, it's a lot of fun. The second time was after I came here for school and I volunteered to usher (which I hear they aren't doing anymore, which is a shame). Then recently I decided to take my hubby for his birthday (since I feel everyone should see it once). We went to Bostix, and got obstructed view. DO NOT DO THIS! Even though we were assured we wouldn't really miss much, it had been long enough since I'd seen it that I forgot that half of the action takes place on the upper platform of the stage. We were sitting under the balcony and couldn't see anything that wasn't on the lower level of the stage. I felt bad that he missed some good parts of the show, but he didn't really seem to broken up about it. Live and learn. read more

I liked it. It's creative, different, and full of surprises. If you've got a 12 year old, take them. It really brought out the 12 year old in me and I had a really good time. Would I do it again? Maybe. I think part of the fun is having no idea what's coming next, and I don't know if the surprises would be there if I saw the show again. And if you go, get there on time. I remember when Blue Man Group first opened in NYC Back then it was the choice of Stomp or Blue Man Both new and unorthodox forms of stage performance, it was shows like this that truly brought "street performance" to the main stream. Unfortunately when i went to see the show again i was surprised that after so many years nothing has changed... its all the same. What happen, no more good ideas? But it is a solid show and one should leave feeling entertained. Its a good gift idea for a someone who hasn't seen it already. That's how i went to see it again, it was hard not to say anything i just kept saying 'You will See" when they asked what it was about. Overall it was more fun seeing my friends freak out, scream, and laugh and enjoy themselves then actually seeing the show again. read more

Charle's Playhouse is tucked away and not the easiest to find. We started walking from the Hyatt (0.4 mi away) half an hour before the show began and made it just in time. The show itself was phenomenal. It was filled with super creative ideas and by far funnier than any comedy show I've been to. I sat in the "poncho section" and kept wondering when something would come flying my way...it never did, and people in the front row experienced no different. If the show has remained the same for years, it seems like it would be safe to get ride of at least 3 rows of ponchos and save all that plastic from landfills. I am tempted to suggest the same about the paper towel party at the end of the show and be a bit more conservative with it but I think it was a necessary waste for the experience (plus, paper towels are biodegradable and much easier to recycle). I would highly recommend seeing the Blue Man Group at least once in anyone's lifetime. My only wish is that the show could be changed up a little over time so I can find an excuse to see them again, perhaps in a different city next time even. read more

Stunning. Energetic. Funny. Amazing. Gimmicky. I've seen this twice now - very popular "Boston" show to take guests to. Blue Man Group is a unique show. Expect lots of funky electronic music, odd funny musical acts, some audience participation, lots of visual humor, and some pre-recorded video bits. But I love it. I love the music and the vibe. I especially love the very end where the music ramps up and they are saying "bye" to you and the musicians by holding out their hands. Strange and fun. read more

A fun and unique experience. I recently went and had front row center seats, which was cool for being close to the action, but also got the opportunity to get pelted with explosive pureed banana splooge. I was pleased to see that the show's been updated since the last time I saw it a few years ago, incorporating some of the bits from the complex rock tour, and freshening up some of the dated jokes. Lots of funny moments, interspersed with some intensely cool playing on the tube sets. Be prepared for an experience that flirts with weird/surreal/snarky and you won't be dissapointed! read more

Hmm, I don't know. I think it's way past its prime. It's a fun little theatre and the show was entertaining, but the newness and shock and wonder have long since past. I went with a college friend and thankfully we can have fun anywhere, so there were lots of laughs and we enjoyed ourselves. However, much of the laughter was over the fact that we couldn't believe we were sitting here watching it. We both agreed they ended the show very well, and if they could just step up their game a little or try something new, it would probably attract a whole new crop of people. However, if they keep selling tickets, then they'll keep performing. I will say for the money, there are other options I would try first. read more

Do not bother to upgrade your tickets!!! I purchased onto seats for the kids- because I thought they would love being splattered by paint. Paint only came on one side of the theater- and only the first couple of rows. Not worth it at all. They didn't even use the paint/ drums very much. They had a very loud "garage band" that was unnecessary. The spitting out of mushed food- spewing out- was completely gross and not needed. The strobe light/ toilet paper went on too long. And then the show was over. There were some funny parts- but all in all- it was certainly not worth half of the money we paid. read more

I bought my wife tickets to this show for her birthday and expected that I would be bored, but would put on a happy face for her benefit. It turns out that I couldn't help having a happy face by the end. I mean it! I broke out into an uncontrollable smile. This show was so interesting, and the music so great that it is hard not to have a good time. It was the second time I have been to see Blue Man Group. I went with my boyfriend, his 2 teenage boys and 20 year old daughter, as well as my 15 year old daughter. I suggested that we get seats in the first few rows because of the interactive nature of the show. Second row seats were perfect! Caution, flying paint and food awaits you, but don't worry they have ponchos there for you. I was really hoping that the show might be different from the original one I saw about 3 years ago, but it was not. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed it very much! Excellent show! Absolutely loved it. I would NOT bother upgrading your tickets to "VIP" I did and in the end I got a $50 drink for it. They say you can have a meet and greet which we did but we realized that they were hanging out in the lounge after the show for pictures.... So nothing VIP there. We were given a voucher for something from the merchandise booth.....but was told we could only get either drum sticks or a jelly bracelet......we chose nothing. But we had a voucher for a drink, that we had..... So our 50 dollar upgrade to VIP got us a drink. But sad to say, others were buying drinks and they didn't even pay 10 dollars. So yeah, it's a total rip off. ****** just to be clear the show itself was excellent!! I definitely suggest going to the show... just don't upgrade your tickets.......go to dinner after instead! read more

I saw this last night. It was the most boring show I have ever sat through in my life. In fact, I kept opening my purse and looking at my phone to see how much longer the show would be (I went with a bachelorette party). With about 20 minutes left I excused myself to go to the ladies room. I just had to get out of there...I was falling asleep. Please take suggestion and do not use the Stewart street garage (blue man group suggestion). It has a really nasty speed bump and it will damage your car if you are going more than one mile an hour. I've been to see BMG three times, and while the latter two viewings weren't as unadulteratedly fun as the first, it still holds up to repeat viewings (with a year or two between each show). BMG is so ubiquitous that it's hard to imagine there's anyone who hasn't seen it, but if you haven't, I'd recommend it. The great thing about it is it's impossible to spoil. When you ask someone what it's about or why they should go, the answers vary along the lines of "It's fun! There are these three blue men, and they are musical, and it's like they're aliens, but there's not really a narrative or anything...you just have to see it to get it." The part with the toilet paper gets me every time. I feel at one with the universe! It's worth it just for that. They've worked late arrivals into the show, so if you're tardy be prepared for some public humiliation. After the show there will be a blue man or two hanging around for photos. My girlfriend said they smelled nice as she took her picture with them, which prompted a very cuddly hug from the black-turtlenecked blue man. read more

Go see Blue Man Group and learn the answers to these questions and more. As many have said before me, it is a combination of music/percussion, dance/acrobatics, and pantomime/theater/comedy. During the course of the show you will be amused, impressed, and just plain grossed out (the moment you figure out why you have to wear a plastic poncho if you're sitting anywhere close to the stage). The show is very participatory and has a way of pulling everyone in, not just the audience members who are called onstage. I can see how some people would think parts of this show were a bit hokey, but if you suspend the cynicism for a bit and just go with it, you're in for a really fun night. This was my 3rd time seeing the show and I was not impressed at all! I took my nephew as a Christmas present (he is 13) and even he was yawning during the show. This show is definitely for kids (Sunday show at 5pm)! The last time I went was several years ago and I felt as thought the audience was more engaged. Spending more than $90 each ticket you want to walk away like WOW what a GREAT show and this was far from! I think the only fun part was the toilet paper other than that the show was drawn out- playing with food, cell phone skit, banging on drums. I've been to see the Blue Man Group twice now. The first time I couldn't stop raving about how cool it was. These guys had the hand-eye coordination of ninjas and all the fluorescent colors were stunning. I liked how they grabbed people from the audience and made them participate and everyone seemed to be having fun. Right before Christmas they hit Boston hard with television commercials advertising that it was an "all new show." My fiancee knew how much I loved it the first time so she snatched up some tickets for us. I was pumped, she was pumped, pretty high levels of pumpage in our house. Unfortunately that didn't last too long. The show is essentially the same exact thing except instead of television monitors like they had before, they use giant plastic iPhones with a television monitor for the screen. There is also a little skit about iPhone apps in which they go behind the phone and their face shows up on the screen.. except it isn't really their face. One of the Blue Men had a very distinguishing characteristic (think: Asian) and this wasn't represented on the screen. Alright, fine, maybe I'm being nitpicky with the pre-recorded gags but I'm still a little sore about seeing the same material rehashed. It was awesome the first time around but when you know what is coming, round 2 is a bit of a 'meh.' read more

Loved this! Finally got to go as my wife got us half price tickets off of bostix or something like that. My first time there and it was so rad. They even took my wife up on stage for a good while. So much fun. We went on a sunday night and was able to score some off street parking. Again, this is an awesome show, I don't wanna spoil anything you haven't already seen on commercials or in other reviews, but it's fun for all, and becomes a party. read more

I went there with my Dad to see Blue Man Group for the first time (it was his 5th time seeing them). The theater itself is small which might be off putting to some but I really liked the intimate setting. There really was no bad seat in the place. Staff was friendly and helpful. The show itself was incredible. So much fun and keeps your attention the whole way through. There is no intermission so plan ahead, and getting up during the show is really disturbing to those around you so don't do it. I would recommend the show to anyone though. Incredible show! This is such a cool and funny experience. The show is a combination of comedy, rhythm, acrobatics, and technology, an extremely interactive and theatrical experience. It belongs to its own category. We had so much fun laughing and wowing at the performances, We were in the poncho section so we got 'wet'. From time to time, the blue man's took break from their performances and picked (awesomely) on the audiences for a bit of additional laughs. I don't want to talk too much about the details of the show, it's a must see for yourself! The theater itself - Charles Playhouse, is on the smaller side inside of the Boston theater district. Went to this last night with my wife and her 16 year old sister. All three of us had a wonderful time - and really enjoyed Blue Man Group. The facility seemed like kind of a dump at first; it's very small, some of the sight lines (especially from the balcony) are bad, and it seems cramped. Once it started, though, I really appreciated the intimacy of the theater for a show like this. Everything was right in your face. That said, I'd spring for the floor level seats in the future - the balcony rail was at the worst possible angle and quite high, obstructing some of the view. Yays: - Fun fun fun fun fun. Can't stress that enough. - Beers weren't too expensive. $5 for a Sam Adams was very reasonable for a theater venue. - Intimate space, with the Blue Men walking around interacting with the crowd a lot - It's hilarious. A bit messy, too, but nothing over the top like Gallagher or something. Nays: - Bad sight lines from the balcony seats. read more

To sum it up: it's a fun show. It's not like any other show you've probably seen. You have to come here with an open mind and understand that the show is more interpretive than what is implied. However, you're bound to laugh at some point and the paper towel rave at the end of the show is always a fun time. We've gone a few times and we always seem to have a good time. Seating at the Charles is a little cramped and it's a little weird that the bathrooms are located outside of the theatre with a portable trailer, but the playhouse is old and to be (somewhat) expected. Overall, the area around the theatre is okay. It can get a little sketchy at night. Go with an open mind and you will have a fun time. read more

Saw this twice. The first time was amazing, raved about it and encouraged people to come watch when they came to my hometown on tour. Two years later I came a second time being promised a new show. Not only was the show the same exact thing with some changes in the order of things but was I completely bored. When watching this show and really analyzing the content when not surprised or hyped up its simply strange. There is little to do with true music and more just strange skits and pauses that waste time. The tickets are overpriced as well. If you see it once you are good for a lifetime. read more

Went here last night for the first time in 12 years. Just as good as ever! They are very innovative, talented, and entertaining. The entire crowd seemed to enjoy it. My only complaint is that they do more comedy than music these days. I miss the crazy drum beats they used to do. There is some of that still, but not nearly as much as before. Pre-encore was excellent (I'm not going to tell you what they did) but encore was rather dull. There's not much reason to see these guys more than once every five or ten years though. read more

The show had it's highlights but as a whole was definitely lacking. It most certainly was not worth the cost of their expensive tickets or the hassle of getting into Boston. In any case, there were a few slow skits that were dragged on unnecessarily. And while there were some funny punchlines, the build up for each one was just long and boring. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and I wish I chose another event for sure. There were plenty of 12 year olds in the audience and think the show was intended more for them. I wish they came up with more cool music ideas and artsy ways of doing it. The Blue Men should stay away from humor since its not their strong suit. For any adult event seekers I'd advice finding something else to do. I was excited when I got there and left disappointed. With such a great reputation and time of popularity from the BMG, I was unimpressed and bummed. read more

My family and I went tonight..boy has it changed! It was pretty boring to say the least..they have changed their routine and did away with when they bring a girl up on stage and wine and dine her with popcorn, a candle, etc. They do not do that anymore..instead they have 2 guys handcuffed together and getting married! huh?? Sign of the times I guess unfortunately! Let's not be a straight family show anymore! Also the people sitting on the sides get zero attention from the blue men when they go into the audience to pick people out. I swear they already know who they are going to pick out ahead of time as the person acts the same way each time..like they were trained beforehand! Also the people who show up late,,that is always planned! you can tell as the blue men pay no attention to the side people..we were totally bypassed and my son was trying to wave at them but they were paying more attention to the person they knew they were bringing up on stage ahead of time! You would think they would choose random people or kids for a change, oh well! I believe it is starting to go downhill or the blue men are just getting tired! They no longer stand along the wall downstairs to greet you after the show either! You are just directed outside with nothing! I guess Covid has put a damper on the Blue Man Group sadly!! read more

I had an awesome time. I thought it was fun & funny. I would have given 5 stars, except that I thought everything was a little too small (seats,halls, restrooms) & the restrooms were dirty. But other than that, I loved it. I probably would not go back unless they did a totally new show, just because, hey, I've already seen it. But it's definately cool and almost everyone in the audience seemed to be having fun, except the couple in front of us.
