I came to this location today for a hike as opposed to going for a swim in the water like many do. Blue Hole is a small waterfall just a few blocks from downtown Georgetown. When arriving at the location, most will note that parking is limited. I found this trail aspect of Blue Hole using a pin in my Alltrails app. For those who don't have hiking apps, if you go north on S Rock Street, you will come across a wide sidewalk that runs parallel with the South Fork San Gabriel River. After this, you will look east, and you will see the blue hole about 600 ft away. The waterfall has 3 levels. The first level above the top waterfall can get up to 7 feet. The second level comes up to about ankle height, and then the third level just barely covers your feet. I walked this designated trail that is 5 miles one way (10.38 miles round trip). I walked at a relatively mild pace as it was a pleasant morning. The total hike took 3 hours and 18 minutes to complete. As the hike is paved, as opposed to a dirt path, it is hard on knees and feet even with hiking boots on. The hike was calm and had beautiful scenery as the foliage throughout the trail was green and crisp. If coming to this trail, it is advisable to come early in the morning (6 AM) to get a parking spot and be on the trail in solitude. Free public parking is available at the corner of 3rd Street and Rock Street in the parking lot or the parking garage. While I love Barton Springs in Austin it's too cold for me and didn't feel uncomfortable at all with the temperature here. Wow, this place was definitely worth the 2 hour drive! We went on a Sunday around noon, so I expected it to be busy! There was no parking in the small lot of the entrance, so we parked in the free parking garage up the street. There was quite a bit of people, but still a vast amount of space, so it didn't feel overly crowded. I would definitely recommend wearing water shoes, especially if you have little ones! The limestone rocks can be slippery climbing up and down. The waterfall wall was absolutely beautiful! I love that everything is still pretty shallow, although I did find a few deep spots, so just be mindful of that. There was just hair galore all in the water with other debris in it... So not the cleanest water if you're expecting clean. Overall though, it such a beautiful spot to just unwind and relax. I wouldn't mind coming back again! Maybe during non-peak time. read more

Nice hiking trails that offer fishing in the San Gabriel River. You can stay on the concrete or venture onto the path. The path is not too bad except in a couple of places going up and down. Be careful in these places and wear good hiking shoes. Overall, very nice views and a peaceful walk. The trail is long enough for a good hike or bike ride. Currently, there aren't any restrooms along the way, so be prepared. Parking is good at the 3rd and Rock Street parking lot. I'll be back. read more

Warning to anyone using Apple Maps. We typed in Blue Hole parking and ended up in Chautauqua Park. It is connected to Blue Hole Park if you keep walking. We didn't think much of it so we went in. I found it really weird the park was empty save for two people on a Saturday. We saw a sign that said Pickett Trail. Since we saw it online we thought we'd give it a try. The view was pretty but upon seeing a homeless tent and we were the only people there we didn't feel safe. We got out of the trail and realized that the two people we saw earlier are homeless. It appears no one comes to this part of the trails and parks in Georgetown due to the conditions here. There's trash all around as we kept walking. People from the neighborhood do brisk walks through the park but don't linger. We were going to walk but figured it's safer/faster to drive to Blue Hole which we found on Google Maps. Blue Hole is very pretty and very different as there are more people around. We didn't get to spend too much time there because we were already tired from our walk in the other park. We just wanted an idea of where we were supposed to go. But we sill want to come again soon. Just be sure if you're not from here like us, beware of where you go/park! read more

This park has come a long way from its humble beginnings. There are paved paths, and passages over the water. There are clean bathrooms and behind those are a path that allows you to walk up over the hills. The views are amazing but the hike will have you climbing over rocks. There are plenty of places where you can wade into the water. The only issue is parking. If you want to get parking that means you will need to get there early. Nice park for hanging out in the river. There is a nice swimming hole and it has some cliffs for looking at - so do not jump off of them. You might be tempted to cliff jump but you must resist. There will be no one there to stop you except your conscience, so listen to it. Learn from me - I jumped. Yes, I admit it - I jumped off the cliffs and not proud of myself. Yes it fun. It was so fun I jump again but I'm paying the price as I write this. The guilt is chewing me up so I am sipping my guilt away with a little Old Forrester. As for the area, there were a few kids fishing down stream. Several folks in the shade of the trees bbq'ing. Not sure if there were restrooms - well there was the natural restro.... Um, yeah not sure about the restroom. All in all this was a great place to swim and hang out with friends or make new friends on the cliffs... that you only look at. . On a late summer, technically fall, Monday afternoon we almost had the whole place to ourselves, but I can see how it would be a jam-packed place on hot summer weekends. This was my first time to this park and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The water area was very nice. You might have to arrive early to get a good spot but we showed up on Memorial Day and found a shaded spot quick. We were just disappointed that we didn't bring our grill and cooler. We wasn't sure how things would be, next time we will be better prepared. We didn't get a chance to scope out the fishing area but we walked the whole beach area and it is fantastic. It had areas where the kids could kind of jump off of with different heights. I thought that was awesome. They also allow pets on leash. We brought our maltipoo and he loved being out there. I can't wait to go back. I didn't have a chance to enjoy the water or the place like I wanted to. I won't miss out next time. read more

Sorry, but the name "Blue Hole" is terribly misleading. More like the filthy brownish-green hole. Water is deep and the bottom is slippery due to all the algae -- I'm 6'3" and I nearly went under a couple of times. Couldn't see under the water and fish (?) kept nipping at my legs and feet. This is a clear water swim hole in the San Gabriel River. Things to do: paved walk and bike trails with wildflowers in the spring time, Pokemon Go, a historical cemetery, fish, sunbathe, picnic, cliff jump. It's free to the public and there's a free public parking garage within a 4-minute walk. There's also a restaurant that overlooks the river. Blue Hole is for families and pets, but there are no life guards. There's the occasional drama of a person who can't swim jumping off the cliff and screaming for rescue. The biggest negative is the filthy, stinky, overflowing toilets and trash cans. I wouldn't picnic here for lack of sanitation. I will return because the pros far outweigh the cons to Barton Springs in Austin. Blue Hole is more peaceful. It seems to be wheelchair accessible as well with concrete ramped sides. read more

Very beautiful to walk around. It was not to busy on December 31. It looked clean, we did not get in water. There was no one in it at this time of year. We just walked taking pictures on rocks and near other formations. There were several people who had dogs running around without leases, including one big dog that tackled my little one in excitement. So watched for disrespectful dog owners. I really love this little swimmin' hole, right in the heart of G-Town. Part of the San Gabriel River Park complex, this is a refreshing little spot. It's a dammed-off section of the south fork of the SG River. There are picnic tables all around, and a fifteen foot cliff that you're not supposed to jump off, but everyone does. The water itself is relatively clean, and seemingly about 12-15 feet deep in parts. You can also sit below the dam, and have the water from the waterfall cool you down. AND, best of all, you can crack open a beer and no one will hassle you! For police state G-Town, that's saying something! (Stick to aluminum, though. Duh.) So throw on your board shorts, grab your Lone Star, and bring your dogs. And I'll see ya at the Blue Hole, all summer long! read more

This place is FREE to the public! It's nicely kept and can get extremely crowded after 5PM. You can bring your tent, a small grill, canned beers, and set up your area closely to the water or by the trees for some shade. Don't forget to bring your floats! The water is pretty deep in some areas, but can be very marshy in the beginning. Once you get passed the gross part, it's perfect! Make sure you bring some kind of float-y so you can relax in the water!! I do want to talk about the cliff-jumping; it is illegal to jump off the cliffs. There are park rangers and officers that will walk through to make sure everyone is in compliance. If your children are on the cliffs, the officer will want to talk with them. I have even seen the officers hiding behind the bushes on top of the cliffs. I overheard the officer saying it is an $1000 fine. I do not know if the officers actually hand out citations for it, but they are serious about the public not jumping. However, I have not seen an officer stay and watch for longer than thirty minutes at a time. So I guess it's random when they appear, so be careful! It's fun to watch everyone work together when they see an officer walking towards the area. Parking is challenging, but I have always found a spot. The Blue Hole is definitely something to do on a summer day! read more

Great place to take the kids! Be warned, it's rocky, and the new beaches were carved out of limestone, so they're jagged and not sandy, little ones might need water-shoes. They'll have a blast with a minnow net. Alcohol is allowed, but no glass containers. Littering is fined and the park is patrolled heavily. Don't get drunk here. It's a family geared park. Cool place to fish a little upstream from the swimming area, but be prepared to deal with the snakes (never seen any moccasins longer than about 3ft) and hook-stealing logs. There are bass, pan-fish catfish and carp. The white perch will pick up live worms 'Texas rigged' off the bottom late @ night, but... **Warning: going there @ night is prohibited now, and may result in a "criminal trespass" charge. These days the sheriff's deputies and parks dept watch it carefully. read more

Neat little place, a little difficult to get to. The water is cool but not cold. Wear water shoes. You can float or swim or wade or fish. There's plenty of room because you can't drive down to it. There are some picnic tables in the trees and some grills. Public restroom is clean. There was a security guy sitting in his car. Incredible place in the neighborhood to swim (for free!) water feels so refreshing, not too cold, and there are fish swimming around in the water which is fun. Free pedi lol as they do nip a bit if you hold still too long or don't have kids splashing by you. There is a bathroom & grill and various depths of water which is great when you have small kids. The deeper side had teens jumping into the water off cliffs, so fun for the whole family. Dogs are allowed on leash. You do have to park & walk but it's a short walk. read more

This might become a new staple of our summers. A girlfriend and I took four kids, aged 6-9, to this swimming area, and had a wonderful day. The ground is slippery - water shoes are not a must, but would probably be helpful. The water temperature of most of the natural swimming holes in Central Texas is almost prohibitively cold, but this one was just about perfect (at the end of August). The dams are laid out so that there are several different levels, and accommodated the various swimming abilities of the kids in our group. There is a small "waterfall" area on one side; the kids had a wonderful time riding their tubes down the "slide." (For that matter, so did the moms!) I suspect that the times kids fell off their tubes and slid down the rocky slope were not all accidental. All agreed that the bruises were worth it. There are picnic areas available, but we just parked our wagons in the shade and laid out a picnic blanket next to the ample sidewalk. Pretty place me and my family went last week. The only thing that was a hazard, I didn't feel like the water was moving fast enough for bacteria. Pretty place, but I wouldn't risk swimming here, it didn't look or smell clean and it definitely wasn't blue. It's pretty similar to old settlers trail area Imo. If you bring dogs be prepared for big dogs off leash to go towards your dog. Might be OK for fishing but besides that I wouldn't bother. I was imagining something totally different.
