We felt not welcomed and given a (why are you here) look. I purchased a blue bottle coffee tumbler and had the barista guy to wash and place my purchase in the cup... needless to say I took in a mouth literally full of soap and had to throw out the entire drink with disgust. Blue bottle has always had good quality coffee, I worked here for 7 months while in school and i absolutely don't mind spending my money here (it is pricey). This location though was just so sad, the staff did not greet us and just stared until we ordered, they looked miserable. Specially the person behind the espresso machine. I had a taste for Blue Bottle's NOLA iced coffee and I hadn't had it in quite a while. I discovered that there is a location in Cobble Hill. The shop is small--three bar stools inside and can probably hold three or four people in line. They do have a few tables and chairs outside but I wouldn't expect a seat. I only get one thing, the abovementioned NOLA iced coffee. I get it with whole milk. It's pricey (with tax, $7.00 for large). I used to get it with half and half (tastes just like coffee ice cream) but they charge extra for half and half, which is ridiculous to me. The only negative I have is that when I was sitting down outside enjoying my coffee, an employee came out and just took a chair from the table where I was sitting. Personally, I would have asked if no one was using it (you never know, someone could have been meeting me and would have needed the seat). Other than that, I like this location. read more

In the last couple years, I have been finding myself liking coffee at least equally (but not more than) to tea. I'm still a huge tea aficionado but it appears that I have at least one cup of coffee in a given day. Hot or iced depending on the weather. Blue Bottle Coffee was listed in an article as one of the best Brooklyn shops for coffee. And I agree (btw, many were from the Williamsburg area). I truly enjoyed my experience at Blue Bottle. I describe it as an experience because the staff were so friendly and welcoming. In typical Johanna fashion (and out of curiosity), I managed to ask about a gazillion questions and they happily obliged and answered them all! Blue Bottle was born about 15 years ago in Oakland, CA and has succeeded by crossing state lines ever since. This particular Boerum Hill spot is cute, cozy and immaculate. Space is small therefore do not expect to be on your laptop or device a la Starbucks fashion. It's mainly to go but there are 3 counter window facing stools available as far as seating is concerned. Upon my first visit, I had the pleasure of receiving recommendations from the/my barista--Dalton. He was quite knowledgeable regarding everything coffee and brewing methods. My selection was made via a "pour over" method. Who knew? Certainly, not I. I selected the Bella Donovan coffee with hints of caramel, red berries and milk chocolate. I always put some kind of dairy or non dairy in my coffee and was informed it would work well. Once it was done brewing, I enjoyed my cup of coffee which had a bold taste but not too bold (I dislike overly strong/bold coffee). Blue Bottle is not just about coffee. There's also tea and hot chocolate as well as some sweet bites such as mini brownies, cookies and chocolate. They also have a New Orleans style iced coffee of which Dalton was kind enough to offer me a sample. And it was delicious. I highly recommend visiting Blue Bottle (there's several other locations in Manhattan) if you are a coffee connoisseur. This location is super cute, small but makes great use of space. My three stars is for hojicha latte. I get it, they're known for their coffee and I had poorly assumed that would translate over to their other options. I was wrong. I am never disappointed when a get coffee from here. This place is just tucked right around the corner with a few tables outside and a few barstools inside. They have a little to go window towards the front to wait for your coffee if gets too crowded. When I went on late Monday morning, it wasn't busy at all. Love! Man, I love Blue Bottle Coffee. Walking into the small, cozy shop today, I was welcomed by a few nice counter persons. I view the menu board and I see a New Orleans Cold Brew with chicory? Be still my heart.. I tell the counter person I would like two coffees. One Cold Brew and One espresso. Oh yeah, throw in one of those Red Miso Sesame cookies. Not a problem sir, $19 please. What??!?! The woman charged me for 4 coffees, I had to explain one cold brew and one espresso to stay. It's all good once the technicalities were settled. Man, the chicory brings me right back to New Orleans. What a treat to have this flavor, its a root that has New Orleans history. Chicory use was mixed with coffee during the Civil war. As trade disruptions and blockades disrupted deliveries of coffee, citizens and soldiers made do by roasting wild chicory root. When the war ended, the good people of New Orleans said we like this stuff, lets keep rockin' it. There ya go. Rock on Chicory with your bad self! The espresso? Off the chain. This newest location of one of the best high-end coffee chains operating in NY these days is one of the smallest, but still has all the same awesome stuff. It's pretty much like a glorified, indoor coffee counter. There is room enough for 5 or 6 people to stand comfortably inside. There are no seats and just a small counter to lean against for the few who snag a spot. They have the same lineup of excellent sweets as at other locations though. Most notably, the delicious cookies: Ginger Molasses, Snickerdoodle and best of all, Double Chocolate ($2 each). Most importantly, to go along with a cookie or two, the coffee here really is great and worth the high prices. The Cold Brew is so good, and requires no sweetening, but nothing beats the New Orleans Style Cold Brew ($4). They add a good amount of whole milk, which helps explain why it's so good. I just wish they had larger cups, which I would gladly pay more for, but it's probably a good thing they don't since I would end up dropping way too much money on coffee. This will become my new first stop for a snack and a drink before a stroll down Smith Street. read more

I was ecstatic this summer when I noticed a location was opening in Cobble Hill. I do love so many coffee shops in this neighborhood and they all have their strengths. Blue Bottle is all about the details and the decadence. I come here for the kidn of strong coffee that will put a little hair on my chest (metaphorically of course). It's strong, melt your teeth kinda strong. But I can't help myself but indulge. Then they have their signature decadent cookies. My older brother is a fan of the lard and pb cookie. And of course they have a selection of the equally beautiful Mast Brothers chocolates. And some other caffeine making goodies to make coffee at home. And I love that their espresso machine is decked out in fabric. The only con is that it's too tiny to get really comfy and find a corner to nestle with a book with. And sometimes I am in the mood for a corner. I also love an iced coffee after a big lunch. read more

Teeny tiny location with very little room to sit but still packed with delicious coffee and treats. There's about enough space for a single-file line to loop once, but the line moves pretty quickly. I got a perfect macchiato plus some snacks. Their ginger cookie had a perfect texture and really hit the spot. My friend also got a baguette, which was pretty minimal but reminded me of a basic baguette in France (though with not as good bread, ha!). Anyway, I appreciated the savory and sweet options. There are two small benches outside this spot so you can sit while you sip on a warmer day. Definitely on the pricier side of coffee, but this stuff is high quality. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop in NYC. I normally grade coffee shops on their back to drip coffee because you can't mask bad beans or bad ratios with plain black coffee. This place always knocks it out of the park. They may have an unfair advantage on that they do pourover so it's always fresh and doesn't burn. The service is as consistently excellent as the coffee. They have three blends on offer, a light, medium, and dark. I personally liked all three, although normally I'm not a fan of light coffee. They are pretty dog friendly at this location and have dog treats on hand, and there are often dog owners hanging out outside. Be aware, this is not cheap coffee. It's $4 or $5 for a cup, and there's only one size, which is not that big. I think it's worth it, but if you're just looking to put some caffeine in your body, there are cheaper options. read more

Still the best Cortado going anywhere between home in 11215 and work by the Bk Bridge. There's lots of good third-wave coffee to be had in our neighborhoods. This cortado is still the best. Perfect intensity, perfect foam/milk/coffee ratios, and worth pausing for 5 minutes to have it to stay on a bench outside in a real cup. If I were an idiot, I'd take a star off for the sheer price of it (I think it's over five bucks for a cortado now), but that's not their fault. It's what things actually cost in NYC now. They make your coffee with a smile, they'll remember your name if you come with any degree of frequency, they're cool but friendly.... and that cortado. Yum. read more

Update: Blue Bottle reached out to me shortly after posting this review and apologized about the incident. The letter I received seemed hand written and they offered me a free drink voucher which I redeemed the next time I was at this location. The coffee was delicious and the service professional. This is more typical of my experiences with Blue Bottle over the years. The coffee is not cheap but the quality is there. Just got a Nola iced coffee that tasted like plastic. After I received the order I overheard the workers commenting on how bad the brew was and that it needed to be replaced. Couldn't be bothered inquiring whether I should have gotten something else (something the workers should have suggested) and figured I would try my luck drinking the coffee as I was also in a rush. How bad could it be, right? 3 sips in and I had to throw it away. Did I just pay $5.50 consume VOCs from a faulty Nola brew? Probably. I like thismall convenient location but this experience literally left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I am impressed with what they've done with the space but I can't imagine it would be great during peak hours (I was there around noon). This coffee aficonada and recent Blue Bottle convert will add the following: · Baristas at the Dean Street location are exceptionally friendly, helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. · The space is immaculate, minimalist, and optimally laid out, and the branding visuals are pleasing/calming. · Either because this location is so new, on a residential block, or slightly clandestine, so far, it is pleasantly uncrowded even during the morning rush hour, in stark contrast to Cafe Grumpy (not to mention all manner of inferior coffee purveyors). · Most importantly, the finished products, made with meticulous care from the finest, freshest, responsibly sourced beans, are worth every copper coin. On this visit, I opted to try the single origin cold brew, one of two varieties which I was thrilled to learn are available year-round. (Our fair city may be in the throes of a polar vortex, but I stick to iced coffee no matter the season, and if I can find iced coffee's stronger and smoother cousin, cold brew, my morning is made). I sat by the window and enjoyed the lovely lighting and the blasting ac on a burning hot day. There are 3 or 4 seats available. Very clean. I think like most Cobble Hill residents, I saw this place open and thought: "Well, this means the neighborhood's really made it." The small counter store is certainly a crowd pleaser around these parts, but I have to saw it's pretty pricey. I'd much rather go to Konditori across the street, where service is better and coffee isn't as pretentious. Cold brew is $5 (really?!) but damn delicious. The warm weather has transitioned by usual cappuccino order to Ice Coffee. They have two types the New Orleans which heavenly with chocolate and chicory flavor a with a touch of sugar cane sweetness. They recommend milk but I usually opt for cream. The second is the cold brew which has little acid but a slight citrus tang. It so delicious that adding diary would be atrocious but do whatever you like. I cannot tell you how good this place is. So forth and try it. read more

What a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! I literally don't know what I did before it opened. I do know that I am spoiled forever... Regular coffee will never be the same. The staff is so kind. So generous. They affectionately make what has come to be the highlight of most of my days.
