I've been to Blue Bear 3x now and it's very inconsistent. You may have the best meal you've ever had that leaves you thanking the food gods or you may have flavorless eggs or raw pancakes. What I've had that's amazing: The Blue Bear Benedict. It's gluten free and instead of an English muffin, it's a potato pancake. The Gouda hollandaise sauce is a delight and the ham is perfection. Griddled Banana Bread when it's made right is a beautiful thing. The toppings are seasonal but I loved it with strawberries and cream cheese topping. (When it's made poorly, it's dry and lacks flavor) What I wouldn't recommend: Breakfast burrito, it's plain and just expensive to keep adding ingredients to it. The Blueberry lemon pancakes, weren't cooked all the way through and would prefer a small portion. Overall, you can have amazing food or not so great food. read more

I'm really oscillating between 4 and 5 stars. Mind you, this place is a good hour away from home, so I only come when I've got other things to do in Racine. So It's been a while, but I come back! I had to get up twice to find her, just as she was coming out to us. So I want to say 5, but keep remembering the wait to say 4. Atmosphere We sat outside and the weather was gorgeous, the huge planters with the flowers were nice, and our toddler had fun walking around the rocks. Solid 5. Food BB burger ($18 +$4 for keto) The burger itself was OK. I wasn't wowed by the patties. House made pickles were cutup into small triangles and felt like they were washed out? Maybe because I ordered keto? The best part about this burger was the keto bread! They have their own bakery that bakes the breads every day. Love it! The kale chips were ok, nothing special. I would have rather subbed the fries for a small salad instead. So overall, the burger was good, not great. Especially not for $22. I wish they just sold the keto bread. That was seriously good. Cozy Atmosphere, Great Service, But Food Could Improve This small, charming spot has a lot of potential, but the experience was a bit mixed. The service is friendly, with two servers managing both the indoor and outdoor tables. They were attentive and quick to address any issues. However, the food quality didn't quite match the price point. We stopped here for brunch on our way to Milwaukee for Thanksgiving. The outside of the building has a giant blue bear painted on side and is hard to miss. The food itself was pretty good, they have a ton of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. I was happy with just about everything I got in my meal outside of the vegan sausage -- but -- that's not really my thing, so it's not a fair assessment. Coffee was good too, which is nice. My only complaint or concern, I suppose, is that I'm not sure how clean it all is. My coffee cup definitely had syrup of some sort on one side that I didn't notice until I put my mouth on it. Also if you're concerned about cross contamination for whatever reason I definitely had fishy potato (someone in my party ordered salmon). I visited here recently with family who live in Racine. This gem is just a couple blocks from their house. They have a patio area set out with limited screened cabanas and heated areas. Reservations are recommended since seating was limited. The service was good - friendly and the staff all wore masks. We started with the cinnamon sugar donut bites. They were warm and fresh. My mom tried the Blue Bear Benedict - deep fried poached eggs, Berkshire ham, potato pancakes, gouda cream sauce and caramelized onions. She said it was good and enjoyed the unusual deep fried poached egg. I had a smoked salmon Benedict that is no longer on the current menu. It was excellent, with a side of cheesy hash. My cousin had the Morning Bun French Toast - vanilla cream, Door County cherry compote, toasted pecans. It was every bit as sinfully decadent as you would imagine. Her husband had a massive breakfast sandwich fit for more than one person. The cocktails were tasty. We sampled Bloody Marys and a couple others from that menu. On a whim we whipped into Blue Bear. We had heard a thing or two but we weren't sure what to expect. When we walked in we were greeted warmly and sat down. The atmosphere was chill and the place was clean. The eating area isn't huge, but I don't think I saw anyone wait longer than a few minutes. The waitress was patient as we were deciding on drinks for brunch. Then came time for the menu... everything on it sounded amazing. We couldn't figure out what we wanted to try since it all sounded so good. Typically in these positions we choose a few shareable items and we are good to go. We still struggled with what we wanted to try though. It's a rare instance we can't decide at least a few share plates. The prices made it untenable to try the entire menu so we had to make a choice of sorts. Our drinks came out and they were all amazing. Just the regular coffee was robust and strong, but the Vanilla Bourbon Chai Tea was phenomenal. It's mixed with a little bourbon and it went down smooth. The Mexican Mocha was decadent as well and was enjoyed by the group as a tasting as well. For an appetizer we took on the Jumbo Cinnamon Morning Bun and Breakfast Brat Sticks with Guinness Maple Syrup. The cinnamon bun was flaky and wasn't overly sweet. The brat sticks were good alone but drenched in the syrup they stole the show for the appetizers. Next came the plates. We had the Short Rib Hash, Blue Bear Benedict, Chicken Confit and Cheddar Waffles, and a special which was a berry stuffed crepe plate I can't recall the name of. The Short Rib Hash was nothing shy of amazing. The ribs had a wonderful rich flavor that tied the rest of the hash together. The homemade bread toast that came with it was great for sopping up the leftover gravy at the bottom. The Blue Bear Benedict defies everything I knew about poached eggs. They are deep fried poached eggs served on a potato pancake with a slice of ham. Every bite was consistently sensational and you never tired from the flavor combination. I have never been one for chicken and waffles but the Chicken Confit and Cheddar Waffles made a believer of me. The chicken literally fell off the bone with little to no pressure. The waffles were made with aged cheddar and were perfectly crispy. The jalapeño maple syrup wrapped the chicken and the waffles in a warm cocoon of sugary subtle fire. The berry crepes were stuffed with a berry mixture that was fantastic. You can't go wrong stopping in for any of the dishes I tried. The rest of the menu is sure to be just as good I am sure. I was in Racine on business and the creativity of the menu here caught my eye, so I decided to swing over for breakfast. There are several unusual things (deep fried poached eggs for Eggs Benedict), and a full Keto menu, which is also unusual in my experience. The food was really quite good, but service time coming out of the kitchen was far too slow for a breakfast place. If you want to place to have a leisurely brunch, this is definitely it. If you are a solo customer looking to get in and out with a reasonable amount of speed, you are going to the wrong place. I waited so long for my breakfast order (almost 30 minutes with only eight other customers in the restaurant) that I was getting ready to cancel it and walk out when my food finally arrived. The cup of coffee was slightly more than lukewarm. When the server asked me if I wanted a refill, I said only if it is hot. Instead of taking my cup and pouri g the lukewarm remnants out, she put the hot, fresh coffee on top of the old stuff. Now, I had a full cup of less than hot coffee. Upon entering, the first thing I notice is the odd mix of characters in this place. As I scan the room, I see a broad array of customers, from families with little kids, to young couples on a breakfast date, from hipsters to bikers, and from white-haired old ladies to yuppies (are yuppies still a thing?). We were shopping at Mileagers and wanted a place for a nice lunch - Blue Bear popped up with high ratings & praise, but ultimately it didn't pan out for me. The space is cute - it's small so be prepared for a wait at peak times. There is no waiting space inside so know that in case of cold/inclement weather. They do have some benches outdoors and a nice sized parking lot. We hit it at just the right time on Sunday and only had to wait about 5 minutes. The menu is full of things that look delicious -much is housemade and locally sourced. The Mister opted for a Rueben with their duck fat fries (+$1.50) and said it was pretty good if a bit "bread-y". Sandwiches come with a bit of house pickles - they're more sweet than sour, and are pretty good. I waffled between an omelette and biscuits and gravy but chose B&G based on the description of "house made buttermilk biscuits with chicken sausage/mushroom gravy and fresh eggs". For $11.50, I received ONE Rice Krispie Treat sized "biscuit" (more on that later), two eggs (cooked over medium as requested) and a pool of something they call gravy. I thought I grabbed a photo but the presentation is awful - gravy on the bottom, then eggs and then the tiny biscuit things in top. I mean, the whole point of B&G is that the biscuits soak up all the goodness, right? Ok - let's talk about these so-called biscuits. I'm sorry - they aren't. Biscuits are slightly crumbly, with soft fluffy insides. What I received had the appearance and flavor of Ciabatta bread - you could see they'd been cut from a pan like cake or cornbread and there were very clear holes from yeast. The texture was chewy and spongy. Just no all the way around. Someone needs to pull a recipe or pull this dish from the menu. Let's talk about this "chicken sausage/mushroom gravy". It's a fairly thin milk sauce with a hint of rosemary - sure, there are some tiny bits of sausage and mushrooms but neither flavor comes through. Overall, it tasted only of my regret at not ordering something else. My main issues are price and flavor - for $11, I expect more than one tiny "biscuit" and I also expect it to actually BE a biscuit. I award this dish no stars at all. What really stood out for me, though, was the dish I ordered - the Blue Bear Benedict. Lot's of veggies and potatoes cooked to perfection. The short ribs were amazingly tender. Just a solid bowl of hash all around. Avocado Bison sausage omelette! Solid 4 stars. Bison was a bit dry as I think it's just a dryer meat but the avocados and eggs gave it a nice twist. The toast! Ordered the asiago toast and the wheat. Big thick slices of bread that were buttery and crisp. I don't usually write a separate entry about some bread but man this was some righteous stuff here. The toast alone gets 5 stars and a WOwzers cause it was so good! Coupled with Valentine roasters coffee it was pure heaven. Truth be told I see this restaurant sticking around for awhile. Driving north from Chicago we were suddenly starving and searching for a place to eat when Yelp pointed out this slightly off the beaten track little gem of a place. It's very cute with outside tables and a garden where they grow some of their own veggies and herbs. The inside space is tiny but charming. The menu offers tons of gluten-free options including donut bites. They were fried, not baked, covered in cinnamon sugar, served with a vanilla sauce and were absolutely delicious! The short rib hash was very tasty but the Blue Bear Benedict stole the show. The sausage encased deep fried poached eggs, Berkshire ham, potato pancakes, gouda cream sauce, caramelized onions may appear to be a heart attack on a plate but it's so good it might be worth it. I had lunch here with my friend in outdoor dining on August 29th 2020. We got there around 11am and we were seated within about 10 minutes. All of the tables were full. When I sat down I asked our waitress if they had Wi-Fi because I have been sent a messenger message from Blue Bear offering me a free small plate (see pics). I had tried to inquire via the messenger app about this offer but it clearly stated it was good for 30 days and at the Taylor Avenue location of blue bear. It said NOTHING about dinner only. The waitress very rudely and dismissively said "oh I don't really know if we have Internet." Because my cell phone get such bad service sometimes i needed it. I said "well can I talk to a manager because I did get a coupon." And the waitress immediately told me that they accepted ABSOLUTELY NO coupons. And I said "well why did you messenger me a coupon?" The manager was just as bad. She had a total attitude...she had that I'm sorry but NOT sorry attitude. She told me that the coupon was for the dinner menu so I couldn't use it. She did not apologize. She said it was the fault of the marketing company that they use and said she would let them know and would have a talk with them because it doesn't sa its not good on Sundays. She said "it's not our fault" .... Seriously?? I was appalled at how dismissive and rude and short these people were. I was treated like I walked in there and ask them to take a sample of my urine into the kitchen. This left a bad taste in my friends and my mouth. I was not expecting anything free but a genuine apology would have been nice. I got nothing even close. I wanted to get up and leave but I had heard the food was amazing. I ordered the Reuben dish and my friend ordered the blue bear Benedict. The food was okay. Our waitress never did a 2-minute check back and when we flagged her down so we could get salt and I wanted extra sauce she proceeded to take someone's check bill ...and then take someone's order... and it took her well over 10 minutes to get us our stuff...my friend was done eating already because waiting for the salt would have meant eating cold food... and anybody that knows how to waitress knows that you make sure the people eating her happy (2 minute checkback) and then you take care of the people that are closing their checks and or the people that are just sitting down and ordering. If that waitress is reading this review ...that is why my friend did not tip you. I don't believe in not tipping waitresses but unfortunately I did not have any cash on me that day. However I will never eat at this restaurant again unless somebody I am with wants to come and I doubt I will do anything but order takeout. I am absolutely disgusted at the way that I was treated and at the service. I am a waitress myself and I have never spoken like such a SNOB to any customer. We were excited to try this place. I have to say we had a lovely gal wait on us . The breakfast burrito was missing everything but tiny amount of beans and a potato slice , the egg and tiny amount of bacon was extra. Grilled cheese had only one piece of cheese and a little basil sauce.. again the young lady was wonderful. We hate to say we won't go back....we thought over night and we have to take away two stars .. as I said the girl was great .. plus the prices were up charged and food had hardly any product, one tiny tomato for a whole grilled cheese.. read more
