It's pronounced "BLAY-doh." I'm sentimentally attached because my dad worked here in the 1970's and I've been enjoying this independent bakery's treats my whole life. Today I visited for the first time in maybe 10 or 15 years, since I live in Oregon now. The interior is delightfully and decidedly unmodern. There's a large yellow built-in buffet/bar with a large mirror, pressed-tin ceiling tiles. and green brown and yellow printed wallpaper that would have been appropriate for Carol Brady's kitchen. And yet, this just adds to the charm. You're greeted by large display cases full of goodies: doughnuts, cookies, bars, brownies. I had a 7-Layer bar and a coconut macaroon cookie. SO GOOD! The young lady behind the counter smiled patiently as my dad and I discussed "Grandpa Bloedow", who's faded portrait hangs high on one wall. I don't eat too many donuts (if I can help myself) but these are good. It's kind of a local crime to mispronounce the name or (for the newbies) to doubt the spectacular of the place...just so you know... So...for my fellow newcomers: Blay-doze...or you WILL be mocked if you get it wrong. Also, not open on Sunday annnnnnd...you will absolutely wait a good 30 minutes in line for donuts unless you are one of the very first there...and after that it's kind of every man for himself (i.e. that nice-looking man or mom-type does not respect or adhere to the rules of first come, first serve...so get in there and utilize your passive-aggressiveness, Tiger! I bought two dozen donuts (Bavarian, jell-fill, maples, etc.) for $11. Fan-tastic. In the Era of crazy donuts, these guys remain the real deal. I was driving thru the area and remembered them from my college days. They are still awesome and cheap! The long johns are pillowy, not greasy, and have a light textured frosting. Perfection! The cake donuts are flavorful, moist and also not greasy. Their loaves of bread ate also yummy. As someone else stated, you don't know what you have until it is gone. Living on the east coast, everything is Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme, small bakeries don't exist. Bloedow's lemon filled and maple glazed are my favorite, every time we are back in MN and drive to Winona, we stop at Bloedow's. Unfortunately, while some have had success with transporting them, we have not had the same luck and even after a day in transport they taste stale. Fresh is really best with Bloedow's! read more

I rarely see a shop with only 5 star reviews so I thought I would check it out! I don't mean to ruin a streak but this place needs an honest and humble review. It's a bakery. They sell donuts and bread and such. They do exactly what they are supposed to do and that deserves a 3 star review. It says "A-OK", which is exactly what it is. There was a large variety of sweets but none of them had labels. When I asked to hear about the types the woman who worked there seemed very irritated with me for asking. I bought three donuts to share with a friend and they were fine. Sorry, but again: Just your average bakery. read more

1-star reviews of stores selling donuts are reserved for pedestrian grocery stores and your average gas station. Bloedow's gets 2 stars because of effort (I'm sure they have very hard-working employees) ... but I can't figure it out. I've been to donut places in Minneapolis, I've been to Shipleys' in Texas, I've been to Voodoo Donuts in Portland. Bloedow's is so incredibly sub-par. I'm sorry, Winona. This restaurant is rated highly because of local pride. People in Winona can't complain about this place in public. The complainer will be shamed for being too picky, or how Winona isn't good enough for you. Whew! The donut recipes themselves need a revamp. I hear this place fries their donuts in real pig fat. If true: AWESOME! But somehow they're still mediocre. Could the lackluster taste be the icing? Did the icing come out of a can? Are the ingredients the absolute lowest quality? If we are heading south - and they're open. A stop is a requirement! This stop was on the way to LaCrosse early Saturday AM. I demolished a deep fried croissant. I don't even care how many calories it is. It melted in my mouth and I loved it! My son had a blueberry bismark and a coconut danish (that he enjoyed Sunday AM). He was slightly bummed he ate half his bismark before hitting blueberry but, enjoyed it nonetheless. The danish was just as god a day later. You won't be disappointed by this stop. Visited this bakery in the afternoon on a weekday. Ordered a couple of chocolate frosted cake donuts and vanilla frosted longjohns with rainbow sprinkles. Also ordered a couple of loaves of french bread (which I used for make-at-home french bread pizza). All products were very good quality and tasty. I would have liked to get a raised chocolate frosted doughnut, but there were none in the display case. This could be just because it was late on a weekday, I suppose. I have been a Bloedows junkie since I met my wife in 2004. As a matter of fact I had never even heard of Winona until then, either way when Angie took me there my first initial thought was, "Hey, this is a nice little bakery." Little did I know what a diamond in the rough lay waiting for me. I have been all over the world, literally, and there is nothing that compares to Bloedows! This place ruined doughnuts anywhere else for me, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Doughnuts? Please! Give me a break! I was in Winona in June, and I bought 4 dozen to freeze and bring back with me to Tennessee. I'm serving my 4th comat tour in Afghanistan right now, and one of my first priorities is to get to Winona as soon as I can to go to Bloedow's. Been in many states in the US and many countries and Bloedow Bakery is the best I have come across! We have even shipped them overnight to Texas because we love them so! Okay, even brought them back when I was flying back as well. Last I visited, I told my grandmother that we had to go there each morning (because I was only there for a short while). Prices are good, maple long johns are amazing, but this place runs off a lot of hype. The store is made for people who know what they want. There isn't much labeling to speak of, and service is fine. BEST DONUTS I HAVE EVER HAD!!! My favorite is the sugar jelly donuts but everything here is so good!! I really like the bread and buns too! Great price! Great service from the workers and great variety! I heard on a Saturday morning they get super busy where you get lines outside but I have never had to deal with that! If you need a morning donut and not so busy then go on a weekday morning I hear its much less busy! This was my first time here and nothing had labels, even though most of what is available is obvious as to what it is, I still inquired about 2 types to confirm what they were. Can't put into words how good Bloedow's products are . I have had their longjohn's, cake donuts, glazed donuts and rye bread. All items were out of this world.
