I mean, you get there at the butt crack of dawn because if you don't you may wait in a line that occasionally is around the whole side of the building... I grew up here... and still drive 4 hours back, on occasion, just to get some of their donuts! We recently visited Bloedow's Bakery due to a trip to Winona and all of the hype surrounding it. First of all, there are no signs on the items describing what they are, and no prices, so you have to ask. When there are lots of people behind you in line, you feel pressure to hurry. We got 3 donuts and an apple turnover. The turnover was dry and had very little apple filling. (We visited Ferguson's Apple Orchard in Galesville during the same trip and their Apple turnovers were AMAZING! SO much better!). The donuts were just OK. If you make a visit, plan to go early or risk them selling out of what you want. Plan for a wait, sometimes out the door, on weekends. The donuts here are always incredible!!! The prices go up very often but I suppose it is worth it. I definitely recommend the date cookies, sugar raised and glazed croissants. The last time I came here I asked for like 3 donut holes and it was totally fine and she gave me 3, but this time she said I could only do 6 or 12. I think of Bloedows as a cornerstone of deliciousness in Winona. They have a great variety of doughnuts and the one that tops them all is the distinguished Maple Long John. Mmmmmm Maple Long John's (Homer Simpson voice). From the thicc (TWO CCs) layer of maple frosting to the delicious dough, this doughnut is unmatched. When back in grade school and a kid would bring these in for their birthday or just to gain d-nut clout, everybody's mood would change from boredom to utter glee. Next thing you know everybody in class would be bouncing off the walls with a sugar high comparable to a 3 day coke bender. Even Charlie Sheen could not reach the Long John d-nut high. Now, years later, I have revisited these maple delights with pure joy and mouth watering delight every time until recently... Now I don't know who decided to diminish my future d-nut HOF candidate but the luster is slipping.. Recent Long Johnnie's have been hard and scorched to the point where one batch looked burnt. How could you do this to something so magical? I bet you snap the horns off of Unicorns too. Even worse than the hardened dough is the frosting... The God damn frosting... I don't know if someone there is some kind of masochist but the maple frosting has been the thinnest ever in Bloedows history. The balance has shifted. I hope it's just the evil year of 2020 that is messing with us but to inspire any kind of hope we need to get back to a thicc (TWO CCs) layer of maple frosting. I will never give up on Bloedows and fight through the frosting that is as thin as Trevor Lawrence's mustache and the dough that's as scorched as the hills of California after a gender reveal party. I'll always praise Bloedows and enjoy every other product they produce but help a Long John STAN out. read more

Anytime I see a shop claiming to have the world's best doughnuts, I try them, just to see if they can stand up to this place. So far, nothing has even come close to Bloedow's. Nothing. The pastry itself is spectacular, but it's their light yet rich frosting that really sets this bakery apart. The signature dish is the maple long-john; it must be tasted to be believed. The prices here are absurdly low. If this were shop were located in a bigger city, it could easily charge many times the pittance they ask for their wonderful fare. Bloedow's was established in 1924 and hasn't changed much in the 84 years since. This is not a bad thing as they have always had the best baked goods around. Fresh baked bread, buns, cookies, donuts, long johns, and bars fill the cases of this little home-town bakery. Everything to fill your sweet tooth. Personal favorites include the maple long johns and the apple bars (an inch of creamy white frosting over a savory layer of apple filling and crust). The only con is their limited bread selection. I'm hoping some day that they'll add a nice foccacia. If you can't get to their main location on Laird Street, the Kwik Trip on Huff offers Bloedow donuts in their bakery section. I've been eating Bloedow's my entire life...my parents' first apartment (long before I was born) was across the street (look for The Ramona Apartments if you go and think of Thelma and Elroy). Every Friday is Bloedow's day at work. But I must address an urban myth that the maple long johns or the glazed are the best of the crop at Bloedow's...that honor belongs to the chocolate frosted cake doughnut. I have been known to serve Bloedow's chocolate cake doughnuts and bacon for breakfast. A word about the bread at Bloedow's...it is not meant to be artisan bread. It is good soft white bread (even the hard rolls are soft inside) with a perfect thin crust. The bread and rolls make awesome sandwiches. If you are going at prime time before 10:00am the line may snake out the door. Fear not...they move fast. They also do not tolerate fools well when they are busy so look at the doughnut list/prices as you wait in line and decide what you want. They will also want to know how many doughnuts you want so they know how what size box they need for your order...so let them know up front about how many you are ordering. This is a great place and highly recommended by locals. I have flown with a Bloedow's box on more than one occasion for friends and family who need a fix. read more

The maple long john is the standard by which all other donuts should be measured, though I wouldn't turn down the raised sugar donut. Sweets are my passion and calling, and I'm a snob. I've lived all over the country and Bloedow's are the BEST yeast donuts I've ever had. Light and fluffy, almost a melt-in-your-mouth texture. It takes a lifetime of skill and a great recipe to pull that off! Most of the time my philosophy about sweets is: the bottoms are just a delivery mechanism for the frosting, but in this case, the frosting (especially the Maple frosting on their famous long john) is literally the icing on the already fantastic cake. If you are anywhere near Winona, it's totally worth the trip in. But go early, or call ahead and ask them to save you a few. Can I just say, full disclosure, that I hate chocolate, and I hate cake-type textures of foods. This means I'm just not really a dessert person.
