Ok back here today and had an actual meal...yummy!!! I had the beef brisket, so tender and not dry..pretty awesome as far as brisket is concerned. My girlfriend had the baby back ribs O M G!!! The most amazingly juicy, fall off the bone ribs. This place takes #1 for those for sure. I liked the onion rings that I got (extra up charge) but, the batter they use for them is so hard that it kinda rips up your gums but, does taste really good. We also had the coleslaw, creamy & yummy, green beans...perfectly sautéed with a nice garlic flavoring. Very happy with this evening of BBQ!! Also the beer is always good. Did you know that Block Brewing has an upstairs room for parties?! I didn't -- what a delightful surprise when we went shopping for reception venues for our daughter's wedding, which took place last weekend. Block remodeled the room after purchasing the building from Shark Club and it's beautiful. There is a sound system built in and space for dancing. There are two full bars and a special space for the wedding cake and for gifts. The owners met with us and kept in touch with my daughter via email before the wedding to make sure everything was in order for the special day. The staff was very attentive and helpful. I had several of our guests approach me to let me know how happy they were with the service. And the food. Oh the food! Sooooo good! All of our guests raved about the food. The roast beef and the ribs were to die for. Even the broccoli was superb. The mashed potatoes were a little lumpy, but I'm going to give that a pass considering I was in heaven with the roast beef. Oh, I must mention the beer. How impressive to have eight microbrews for our guests to choose from, in addition to other drinks. My only regret is that I forgot to bring my growlers to fill for the poprawiny the next day. Thank you Block Brewing for helping to make our daughter's wedding reception an event filled with joy and wonderful memories. We'll be back! read more

They have upped their game recently. Their food is great! Pepper jack crab soup is something that I just crave - spicy, delicious and perfect. I attended a wedding at this location in march 2017. The venue was nice, pretty and accommodating. The food was wonderful! I would give the food 5 stars alone! The staff was what made this the 2 star review. Rude, short, taking things off the table In front of me sitting there without even asking, not allowing whole entire tables to get beverages because one person was drinking heavily. I had 2 drinks all night and was being driven home by my father in law and was not allowed anything after 10pm! The owner/manager was the rudest person. The bar staff's attitude changed as soon as she came around from fun and jovial to short and non-friendly. So for that alone, I rate this a 2 star place. The food was really good and I usually am not a fan of BBQ but the soups (crab and Mexican wedding) were amazing as well as the Mac and cheese!! We so want to love this place. The pizzas good the ribs and brisket are good and the overall atmosphere is just what you would want. There have just been a few issues that keep holding us back. Tonight's overall service is precisely the issues that could prevent return visits. The Transporter Porter is completely miss described on the menu and does not represent the beer. It is different than the actual (correct) description you will find on the website. The menu should be corrected. When returning the small 4 oz beer from our flight due to the wrong menu description it took a good 15 minutes for it to be replaced. When asking about a menu selection for dinner, the waitress completely misrepresented the meal. Not intentional but she clearly did not know the correct answer and for someone else could have been clearly a reason to send back. The food was good but not a described based on our question. Again, nice atmosphere and it's nice to have something like this so close. We will try again in hopes of learning to love it. read more

We just ordered Mother's Day dinner from here because everywhere else was slammed and not taking orders. The food was DISGUSTING by the time we got it home. The fries were soggy and cold, the brisket meat was dry, hard and looked about 3 days old. I found a hair in my fries. There was chicken in the Mac and cheese and I didn't order chicken. My husband's "nachos" were a pile of chips, about 3 small pieces of meat, jalapeños and some cheese. I've never had a worse carry out experience in my life. Second time giving this another chance first time the pulled pork was cold and full of fat second time we were the only people in the dining area and two people in the bar area and our waitress kept us on empty beers til I got up. Also had to get up and ask to cash out and the attitudes there are TERRIBLE. I bartend for a living and this is not cool at all. Edit went back last night after 4 months to have a beer at the bar. Bartenders are super rude and not attentive at all. Such a shame because they have good beer. They have me a dirty glass and we're actually annoyed that I asked for another one. They could care less about customer service. I said hey can I talk to you real quick to ask for another glass and she straight up kept doing whatever the hell she wanted til she deemed it necessary to talk to me. They could be a decent place if they replaced the bar staff with people who know how to fake it til you make it. This was on 1/5/18 around 6pm when we went in. This review is in regards to the banquet room and service. I had my wedding reception in the large banquet room on 6/30/18 and was blown away by the level of service, the quality of food and drinks, and the value of the venue. Servers, managers, and the owner were very polite and helpful from the time on inquiry. They let us upstairs to look at the room as many times as we wanted, answered questions, and let us test our computer for the music. They met with us the week prior to make sure we were all on the same page with expectations and costs. On the day of, they let us drop off our decorations and set up all of the tables. My baker was able to drop off the cake which was kept safe for us. The food was fantastic and far better than any food I've ever eaten at Crystal Gardens or a similar traditional wedding venue. Everything had flavor and the chef was there to answer the guest's questions about ingredients and allergies. There were three bartenders that kept the bar running very smoothly. There were no complaints from the wedding guests about alcohol. If you're thinking about throwing a large party here, go for it! It was a wonderful value and an overly positive experience. read more

SO and I stopped here on our way back from an engagement party that only offered vegan food and desserts. While very light and tasty, I was still hungry and there was no liquor there either so I and been hankering for a good martini or beer and was left wanting. Since this is on our way home I asked the SO if he wanted to give it a try and we went ahead. Once I realized it was a BBQ place with smoked meats I knew it would be a hit (unless it sucked) but this is my SO's favorite kind of food. Since leaving Ann Arbors Blue Tractor and Ypsi's Red Rock, his eyes lit up when he saw the sauces on the table and the menu. I wasn't really hungry, I really only wanted a beer and maybe an appetizer, so I suggested that he order the you pick three deal they had and I'd pick at what I wanted while I enjoyed my beer. I ended up getting a flight of beer, all the dark ones (except for the one they were out of, which had coffee in it of course, ARGH) and the brown ale. The server mentioned a ghost chili pepper stout they had, which I tried. It is pretty hot, my SO couldn't handle it and I probably could have drank it, but I was worried if it would irritate my stomach later so I traded it in for an amber drink (which wasn't very good). The rest of the stouts and porters were good, but they weren't overly flavorful. Nothing has beaten Corner Brewery's/A2 Brewing Co. Espresso Love yet! We got the brisket, the ribs, and pulled beef. They were great. You can tell they use a smoker. I would say I like it even more than Red Rock, which was my current reigning champion out of the BBQ places in the Washtenaw area. The beers are pretty good, but I think Red Rock wins in terms of variety. We will be back, maybe tonight! We want to try the sammiches and I might try a full pour of one of their stouts. Hopefully the one with coffee will be available this time. read more

Went here on opening night, the place was busy but not packed. The building is right off the highway exit in a big barn and you can see the distilling tanks as you walk in. They have a full bar and a variety of Michigan beers on tap, including about 10 of their own, spanning across all different types of beers. I'm not an IPA guy, so I tried the amber, a stout, and a porter, as well as tried other IPAs and a blonde ordered in our party. Nothing really stood out to me! (They also didn't have the beer I most was interested in, some kind of brown sugar beer). I don't know that I could make better, but they all seemed watery and lacking in full flavor; but that's just my opinion. As for the food, we ordered spinach dip (very good, very cheesy), pretzels (standard stuff), and onion rings that were very disappointing; the onions tasted hardly cooked, very crunchy. Their veggie pizza was decent; I'd be interested to try a different pizza, so that'd be my recommendation. A friend ordered a bbq sandwich that he enjoyed, with decent fries. I ordered a large mac & cheese with chicken tenders, which was good, but it's also tough to mess it up, right? Chunks of bacon were plentiful. Their barbeque sauces also didn't stand out and needed some thickness, also very watery. Overall, I expected a potential big draw type place that wouldn't be Slows, but would have at least either the food or the beer that would make up for deficiencies of the other, but as a group, we all lost momentum. I'm optimistic it could be opening night jitters, but at the same time, I'm not exactly in any rush to come back. read more

My wife and I tried this place when it first opened up like 5-6 years ago. I think it was Sharky's before Blocks. We came in later in the evening and the 2 bartenders stood in the corner talking and ignored us for about a half an hour. It took a 5 years to get back there this spring. We walked in and told the greater our story. I think she was a manager and honestly had a great time. Forward to today, 9-12-19 and we took my wife's parents there. Same issues with lack of service. It was almost empty and we saw our server( Chloe) twice. When we ordered and when we paid our bill. One of the other servers was nice enough to grab us refills because she also could not find Chloe. Plan ahead, there is usually a wait! I've been on a week night and on a weekend. BLT pizza, burgers and onion rings - OMG the ONION RINGS are AMAZING!! They use the beer batter (and what beer they use can differ) to make the onion rings. These are not tiny onion rings and the chipolte ranch to dip them in is sooo good. Mmmmmm. (And I'm not a huge onion ring fan!) The food has come out timely for the amount of guests. Service has been good both times. Price is good for what you get! Only complaint I have is the wait time and that the fries were over cooked - I don't like mine overly crispy. Beer: If you are a fan of the porters or the stouts, you may be disappointed. Beer is so personal, so I don't want to speculate. Personally, I liked the Blood Red Orange, Hop Genius and the Cross Eyed Moose and the Alias Amber weren't bad either. We ordered two flights. People are being a bit harsh on this new brewery. It has glimmers of hope for a truly stellar brew pub: good amber, IPA, and double IPA brews and good BBQ food. Patrons aren't relegated to their house beer, a full bar and numerous craft drafts from other breweries are available. I liked the clean decor and the bar. There were plenty of TVs at the bar to catch a game. Their menu had apps, BBQ, pizza, sandwiches, entrees, and salads. Their house-made mac and cheese was really cheesy and paired well with the IPA. I like that there were some vegetable options on the menu. Not that I'm a vegetarian, but I don't always want over-the-top, calorie-laden gastropub fare. We were a bit annoyed by the bartenders. One took a break and returned reeking of cigarette smoke. It was rather unappetizing when he stood near us while we ate. We overheard the other bartender giving horrible beer advice to a customer, telling him what he did and did not want to drink. By the things she was saying I would say she's not all that knowledgeable about beer, something you would want at your brew pub. She could learn some craft beer finesse. I'd consider a must-stop for any beer enthusiast. And for those just looking for a place for a good drink and meal. read more

My husband and I have been there 3-4 times now. The first time, they had been open for a week or so before we stopped in. First off, the food is really the star of this place. The beer is okay, but we haven't really found too many that are really amazing. There are a few, and thankfully, there are some seasonal ones which are really good, but most of their beers aren't ones we like (we're not big on the IPA things). But the food is the best part of this place. The ribs and brisket are the best of their BBQ selection. I had their pulled pork and turkey and wasn't impressed at all by them. But the ribs and brisket are quite delicious. The meat is tender and pulls away from the meat nicely. It comes dry and there is a myriad of sauces at the table you can dress it with, if you so choose. I'd recommend that you get onion rings and beans with your meal. The baked beans are delicious with a good spice. The onion rings are incredible -- you can tell they're handmade and they're really delicious. We've been back a few times and we got an appetizer of the wings (which are pretty darned good), and the nachos -- which are amazing. The toppings for the nachos are really generous! It comes with a cheese sauce, your choice of meat (go for the brisket), pico de gallo, beans, and pickled jalapenos. They're incredible and they're pretty much a meal for two people! Go here for the food. Order a beer, too. But the food is really the star, IMO. read more

Saw there was a new brewery in Howell and had to make the trip back home to see how it was. I was pleasantly surprised that the beer was pretty solid. Nothing mind-blowing, but very drinkable. I ordered their IPA and Double IPA and would order again. Also tried the Blood Red Orange IPA and would like to try a full pint. Food is decent. My pulled pork sandwich was tasty but the bun was a little to soft and soggy. When you put juicy pork, BBQ sauce and slaw on bread you should really use something a little more hearty or at least toast it. The fries were a little undercooked for my taste, but well seasoned. Cornbread had great taste, but was a little dry (very hard to get around). The onion rings I tried were huge and pretty tasty, especially the spiced ranch sauce. I do think their frying oil was getting a little old and needs changing. Portions were a little smaller than I was expecting for a BBQ place. The worst part of my visit was the service and I've heard from others, after going that they've also had bad service. We had to request water multiple times and didn't receive utensils until after our food arrived. At the end of the night our bill wasn't split properly. Overall, I would visit again. Great to have a place like this to visit when I'm back home in Livingston County. Hopefully they'll work out the bugs in service and get some hearty buns for the sandwiches. read more

What a great little spot! Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon and grabbed some bar seats. The place is large & has great food and beers. I started with a sampler, 4 of their 16 beers for $7. There was a huge variety of bread from lagers to stouts. Personally, I liked the blood red orange IPA and the creme brûlée stout. For food we split the smoked buffalo wings & nachos. The wings were about 8 in an order and nicely smoked but still pretty spicy in the sauce. The nachos has queso, pico, beans, jalapeños and we added pulled pork - which was a welcomed addition. For lunch the two was a nice sized portion. It wasn't crazy busy and since we were sitting at the bar the waitstaff were super attentive. Honestly almost checked on us too much, hah but I wouldn't complain. There was a larger group there and it looked like there may have been an upstairs, so definitely good for that. On a whim, we saw this passing by to our new favorite breakfast place. We hadn't been in Howell for a while even though we're in the next town over and we're excited to see a new brewery has popped up. We ordered a flight of beers and were impressed at the nice strong flavors rather than the watered down flavors of breweries that have popped up in the cities nearby. The Hop Genius had nice strong, hoppy coriander/cumin notes...a bit too hoppy for me, but I appreciated their nice pale ale, don't remember the name. This is such a promising brewery and we hope they succeed as we loved their beers. As a reference, hubby and I love shorts and dark horse hoppy beers. This delivers on strong flavor for those types. As far as food, we ordered fries with a side of garlic aioli...some of the nicest fries and aioli I've had this side of mi...always like the frites at Bastone in Royal Oak as well as their aiolis and this was close... As far as bbq goes as most of the menu is based on, the bbq sauce is heavily tainted with black pepper...couldn't taste anything else in the variations except for black pepper. Also, the sauces were more watery than your average sauce. We hope this place succeeds as we want to come back. Good balance of great food and great beer. read more

I give 2 stars for the beer. I'd say 2 1/2 but that's not an option. I have been going to this place since they opened, and man had it gone down hill since. Once they lost Scott as a manager, all hell broke lose. Don't get me wrong, the beer is very good. But service and what they call food is god awful. They say in the restaurant business that consistinancy is death... well this place hasn't changed their menu, or even offered a special item (except on st. Paddy's day) for any change in the menu. Boring is the best word to use. And the quality of the food has plummeted so hard. The only change this place has made is make the pizza round since opening. You want good bbq... don't go here. Over cooked, no love. Seems like it sits on a warmer all day. Management, this is for you. Stop doing the same old crap and make yourself a brewery. Add some specials, do a mug club, make your food edible again. I swear that howell is such a great area for food and drinks, I know and you know that your business is down... so please do something about it and make this place great again. Until then, at least there is a few breweries in the area that can keep it together batter than you. Again, I love your beer, but I HATE your food, your service, and your general disregard to change your crappy establishment. read more

We've now made a special trip out to go to Block Brewery a 5-6 times since we found it earlier this summer. The first time we went, they acknowledged they could seat us, but there'd be a delay in getting out food due to back-ups in the kitchen. We accepted that, everyone is having staff issues. The food was really good when it came. Subsequent trips became better timed (although still a bit slow) but the food quality kept getting colder and served potentially reheated and dry. Tonight was an utter disaster; 20+minutes before we were acknowledged for a drink order and our waitress was incredibly rude when we inquired about a food allergy concern (in hind sight we should have left at that moment). Next came a cold and dry pretzel appetizer, cup of soup was literally 4oz (I have the same cup at home for my cat to eat from) and it was cold, son's ultimate Mac was served in a hot dish but the Mac was cold, not creamy and somehow had no flavor. Our waitress wasn't coming back, she was literally turning circles trying to figure out where to take food she was carrying, passing the table she finally delivered it to 4x. Meantime, we stopped a different waitress to get refills of water and iced tea, who sweetly took care of us. Manager was nowhere to be found, needs to be checking on the customers to ensure things are running, or get things running, smoothly. With service and food quality degrading like this... I can no longer support or recommend Block. Tonight was a $68 dinner for 3 DISASTER and a completely spoiled evening! read more

Needs improvement to the kitchen & food menu. I may have never given a business such a low rating, but unfortunately they earned it. Took my wife here for her Birthday . We both were excited after exploring the menu online. I regret to say our food was horrible. I ordered the 2 meat bbq plate with 2 sides. The food was cold and tasted as it was microwaved multiple times before being served to me. It was my wife's plate that earned our disappointment. She ordered the Mac & Cheese dinner. I looked as if another table didn't finish it so they warmed it and sent it to us. I'm sure that wasn't the case, but the presentation clearly missed the mark.
