I have only been to this restaurant/bar once in my life while passing through town, but if I were in town again I definitely wouldn't mind stopping by again. It was early in the day so not a lot of foot traffic but just enough to keep the staff busy. This is a fun atmosphere, large bar section for those who aren't looking for tables, but they have a lot of tables for their larger parties. It start to get busy near the end of our stay and you can see they get a lot of repeat customers. Our bartender/ server was very helpful and a delight to talk to because she did interact with us, shared some laughs, as well as some recommendations when it came to their large menu of beers and food. She talked us into flights and we were not disappointed and also thoroughly enjoyed the flavors of each one. I have noticed the menu does change so at least there will be something every now and again that you can try so don't be afraid to. There's a ton of parking here so you need not worry, just bring yourself or guests and kick back. read more

1st time back in a while. I was with the "church" crowd today. (Which means we are over dressed, having fun and take forever to decide on what we want) The restaurant is great for large groups (church crowd) We had fast friendly seating. Our waitress was somewhat impatient. We sat down and she gave us no time to decide on our drinks. She was a little rude. After taking our orders our service was fast and professional. The food..... I ordered the Mac and cheese and it was tasteless even when I added Bbq sauce. My wife ordered nachos and that was a good bet. Happy to have found such a cool place not far from home! I have been here 4-5 times in the last 6 months and have enjoyed myself each time. I can't think of another spot in the area with such tasty beer and laid back vibes. I want to make sure I state how delicious their beer is... The IPA selection is one of my favorites of any Michigan brewery. I recommend the double IPA, the blood orange and the New England hopped IPA. This is a perfect spot to grab a beer flight because they have soooo many choices. Pretty sure they have happy hour specials too, so ask about that. The food is good, I really liked the apps. I am a BBQ fanatic and there's is good, but it's not great. I am willing to try more and hope they can change my opinion. Mmmmm what can I say! This place is amazing. Let's start with the service. 6 pm Friday night. Got right in. Got drinks within 5 min. Order placed, thought we'd just try things out and got the chicken nacho's. Seriously I have never been served this fast. They were put in 5 minutes and were delicious! Note if you don't like smoked chicken this might not be for you, we do and they were so good my husband had to order some wings. Buffalo style, 9/10. . And I might as he gets wings everywhere we go. Cooked perfectly and smoky.. his quote exactly. Now, onto the beer. Huge selection, we are ipa fans mostly and this place killed it! loved the blood orange, crisp at the finish and easy drinking as well the tri 21 project as well as boom hop alaka .My only regret was that we left our growlers in our camper, which was just as well because we were stuffed. This is the second time I've been to Block Brewing. The first was in Brighton and the second in Howell, but while not bad it was nothing to write home about. Overall, I found it to be pricey. I mean $17 for their brisket sandwich (which was OK) and $18 for the smokehouse burger was way too much for what was received. I will not likely be returning to Block Brewing anytime soon. read more

The service was TERRIBLE!!!! We went in as 2 couples and had flat soda and the worst service ever. This is not the first time. We had TERRIBLE service before and figured it was the individual, wrong! After more than 250.00$ combined for drinks 2 pizzas and 2 apps, we left. Beer and drinks went ignored as our server bee bopped around. It's unfortunate because the rest of the experience was great including the food and beer. If you want to wait forever for drinks as you sit and wait for your food, go to this restaurant. We will not be back. We will also tell everyone that asks about our experience. They could not even bring me a double of Buffalo Trace. The waitress said that they would not let her bring me a double because it was high end. Company policy. Really???? Am I a criminal??? Never again. Went today around 3pm (July 30th) and sadly walked out due to poor service. We waited and waited and waited for a server to come take our drink order, but after 20 minutes that didn't happen. The same waitress walked past our table at least 10 times but never even acknowledged our existence. I get that places are short staffed and I'm understanding to a point, but at least acknowledge us and say you'll be with us soon. Don't act like we aren't there. Stopped at Block on a lazy day of brewery exploration. The brewery space is huge, so you don't feel crowded at all, and there is plenty of parking. Easy to get to as it's right off the freeway which makes it nice. It's almost set up like a sports bar because there are so many tvs, but we didn't mind. We tried a flight, which is 4, 6oz pours. You can only do flights of their beer, not of the entire "on tap" menu which I was sad about. Our flight was Burnt Shugga (crème Brule stout), Razzle Dazzle (blonde ale), Blood Red Orange (citrus IPA), and 2 Grand Cru (Belgian strong ale). Burnt Shugga was really good, slightly bitter finish but expected with the name. Razzle Dazzle was fruity but the "fruity" tasted like fake candy flavoring so I didn't care for it. Blood Red Orange was excellent and so was 2 grand Cru. I also tried Oddside's Mayan Mocha Stout- AMAZING. It's a stout with chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and habaneros. It's got a kick but it was my favorite beer I've had so far this year. We didn't eat a full meal but tried the parmesan fries. They were excellent and the perfect snack for our flight. Our waitress was really nice, the right balance of check on us but don't hover and annoy us. We'll visit again soon! read more

The beer is great, but the food quality has gone steeply downhill in the past couple of years. I decided to give my former favorite pulled pork sandwich another chance. The last time I got it a few months ago, it was fatty and gross. This time was slightly better, but it was so flavorless, I had to douse it in sauce. I didn't even detect any smoke flavor from the pork. I usually love their fries, but all of ours were way over cooked and tough. My son got the brisket sandwich, and the meat on it was in big, 1 inch cubes. I'm no meat expert, but I've never seen brisket cubed, especially on a sandwich. My other son got the kids mac & cheese, and it was nothing special, the sauce seemed thin and watery. My husband liked his nachos. So, I guess 2 stars for ok nachos and good beer. It's too bad, this used to be our go-to place to eat, but definitely not anymore! read more

We love having multiple great brewery's in our small town!!! Block is one of them. The parking lot was full but got right to a table. Wow, it was super loud inside though and there were a number of tables still open. Waitress was very nice and prompt the whole time. We ordered right away but food took a while (like 35-40 minutes) to come. The dry rub wings came right away. Flavor was good but we've had way better. And there was only 8 for $10, not worth it. Overall the prices are decently priced. I ordered the Big Block Burger it was well done but ordered medium. The meat was an interesting combo, beef patty - brisket - bacon that was full of flavor. Fries were great. Mac n' Cheese was interestingly spicy, I am unsure on whether to say I liked or didn't. I guess mostly appreciate that it was different. Great bar service without any rush as we looked through all of the house beers. Huge expanded selection of ally types since our last visit and we found several that we loved: Cherry Bomb, Razzle Dazzle, Cross-Eyed Moose of course and more. Admittedly I like a smaller warm charming vibe for my Brew Pubs. This place is cold and carnivorous with a huge dining area that has a prison vibe. Next time I'll get a seat in the bar area which is much more inviting. My suspicions are also alerted at a brewery when the emphasis seems to be more on food than the beer. Given Blocks extensive list of beer that's probably not fair. The two beers I ordered were above average. They use a bland generic pint glass that fits in with the cold feel of the place. They have an extensive food menu with an emphasis on barbecue. I ordered an $18 brisket sandwich and it's a crime to call it brisket. The meat was CUBED rather than sliced. It was oversmoked and tough. The bun was a school lunch bun that fell immediately apart. Definitely not brisket. Shame on Block. The service was very good. I'll be back but not in any hurry. Rarely have I felt compelled to leave a review on the same night that I visited a restaurant, but man, they're killing it here! Admittedly, this area leaves much to be desired in terms of good food so anything passable counts as an amazing find but Block has some AWESOME food. Tried the BBQ platter with brisket, the brisket was so tender all it needed was a fork to be cut and that's the sure sign of a great piece of meat. They have several different BBQ sauces you apply yourself which is great because you can make sure the meat isn't super saturated with sauce. Mac n cheese side was very good too, and the corn bread was pretty good. Now the BEER. I tried two - a brown ale and a tangerine Hefeweizen. Both were outstanding. Michigan's craft beer scene is exploding and Block can definitely compete. They do flights if that's more your thing, and growler fills if you find a brew you feel compelled to bring home - you probably will. The prices are also great - $5 for a pint cannot be beat. Ambiance (not that that's something I care about much) is great too. This place is legitimately cool (again, not something you find often out in the sticks), I would totally hang out here if I was in the area often. The patio that's shaded in the evening is plus. The final bonus - they're open late!! Everything here closes so early and this is one spot that doesn't. read more

Can't wait to go back. Good beer, good grub. Nothing spectacular, but all good with a clean, open ever-so-slightly trendy vibe. A couple friends and I ordered a flight (4 6-ozers for $7, that's a great way to start a meal!) and selected Wired, Blackout stout, Braided Blonde and Alias Amber. I found them to be exactly how the menu described them (which is the same as described on their website), and I would've ordered one of each had I had the time! The darks didn't have quite the finish I'd prefer in a top-shelf beer, but very drinkable indeed! And I'm not a hops lover so the Alias Amber was perfect for me. Read the menu, that's what you'll get with at least these four. Pulled pork sandwich was light on the cole slaw, which came on top, but the BBQ was very good although quite mildly smoked. The three sauces--sweet, house, and spicy--are all Carolina-style, watery sauces. Like the pork, they're all good but a bit underwhelming. If you've got picky eaters in your group who haven't before tried or don't often like BBQ, you will want to try this place. Except the BBQ beans. Don't let the watery consistency fool ya, mine were purdy darn spicy! The decor is dark wood, well-lit, with high ceilings and it wasn't overly loud (for a moderately busy lunch period). The tables for four are on the large side, offering plenty of room. Our server Kelly was a little too polite. E.g., upon being served: "Thanks." Response: "Oh you are so *very* welcome!" And imho you shouldn't ever have to ask for more water. Overall, quite good, I recommend it and look forward to going back and trying something else on the menu like ribs -- and of course trying more of their delicious beer. Block Brewing Co. is located in what used to be The Shark Club (I think that's its most recent iteration) on D-19/Pinckney Road in Howell. Just off the highway, it's convenient for locals and travelers. It's a huge building, which could cause a 'lost' kind of atmosphere, but they have definitely made the most of what they have, with high ceilings, and intimate bar area and a really cool looking brewing area. They also have a fantastic al fresco area - my only thoughts on this is that it would be a little cooler if it were out back, just because of traffic. But the tables are well spaced, umbrella'd and there is also more lounge-y type furniture. The music is sometimes a little too loud - we last went on Monday, 7/4/16 and sat outside. Must have been tuned into the 90's station because we heard Vanilla Ice, Salt n' Pepa etc. Which would have been fine, but it was a little loud, which made it harder to chat. The service has, historically, been hit or miss here, but has shown improvement over when they first opened. I think they must have gotten a quality, experience manager that has kept the staff together. They're friendly, knowledgeable and quick. We always love the food here. The cornbread crusted catfish is delicious, crispy, not greasy, light and the perfect portion. My husband (and me too!) loves the baby back ribs, so he gets them almost every time. I'm a hard-to-please coleslaw person, but theirs is really good - creamy, but not too much mayo and a little kick. Their House BBQ Sauce is my absolute favorite. Imagine my surprise when I found out they are finally selling it by the bottle! So EXCITED! The only thought I have on the menu is that it isn't varied - now that they've been around a while, it' be great if they offered a weekly off-menu special for regulars to try. We're not beer drinkers, but it seems that they have recently added Howell Winery wines - it'd be great if they had even more local wine options to balance out the beer menu. I was super excited to try this new brewery after it opened last week, and my initial visit didn't disappoint! If you have ever been to Slows in Detroit and loved it, you will find a similar vibe here - from the dark wood on the walls to the BBQ sauce flavors, ranging from sweet to Texas hot. We ordered two flights so we could sample almost all the beers ($7), and I would highly recommend doing that if you aren't sure about what you'd like to drink. I enjoyed the coffee Porter {Wired} and Alias Ale best, and my husband liked the Love Me IPA. Sounds like they usually have a rotating interesting beer, but they were out of that one (a blood orange IPA - how cool). We took our pleasant server's suggestion and ordered the wings with a dry rub and Block fries - hand cut, sprinkled with Parmesan and served with a garlic aioli. The wings were ok, but I will definitely try something different next time (although my husband seemed to love them). The fries, however, were awesome, which gives me a lot of hope for the rest of the menu. I felt their pricing is pretty standard/affordable and the menu has a great variety but isn't too overwhelming. Think pizzas, burgers and BBQ. I can't speak for the brews here as I've never tried them but I have eaten here plenty of times. And taken family from the UK here for some BBQ. Tonight my husband picked up a slab of baby back ribs and a couple of sides to bring home for Shrove Tuesday. Although I haven't always been impressed with the food at BBC, they do amazing ribs and I'd recommend these heartily. Their sides seem to have improved too; while the Mac and cheese has previously tasted bland, tonight it had a zingy touch of sharp cheese and a peppery quality. The green beans were not overly done either. A good Fat Tuesday was had by this mama-to-be for sure. We also popped in here last Easter Sunday when they were serving a buffet lunch and it is worth a taste if you fancy something different at Easter. read more

My husband, daughter and I live about 40 minutes away but were in the area to do a painting at another brewery and stopped here for lunch. There was a lot to choose from on the menu. I got a small pepperoni pizza and my husband got a burger. The food was a little bit better than average, but we got fries with garlic aoili sauce as an appetizer. The fries were out of this world good. I would've been satisfied with two helpings of fries. Or five. Because I could just sit there and eat them until I made myself sick I'm sure. We each got beer flights with different beers. 4 beers on the flight for $7, good price. I got the tangerine hefeweizen, cross eyed moose, alias amber and windows down. The tangerine hef was pretty good, almost shandy like. The cross eyed moose was my favorite. Had a nutty, caramel taste to it. I've been to breweries with better and worse beers, this falls in between. I like the decor and atmosphere, if it was closer we'd frequent this place. We joined a small party here, 11 of us were present. T'was a graduation dinner. Our server was great, but of course, I cannot recall her name. Eats, mother and I shared a veggie pizza with onions, shrooms and olives. We also sampled the crack fries, don't know if that's their actual title on the menu but they had parmesan and were delicious. One of my cousins ordered them and she shared. Appetizers we sampled included the pretzels with beer cheese, tasty and the spinach dip, same. I also tried the cider from Vander Mill's on the Block's menu, name is forgotten, but taste was memorable in a good way. Enjoyed seeing family members I don't see all that often due to distance and life. The atmosphere and food and beverage were good. Nice private-ish room available for groups of probably no more than 20-30 persons. You can observe the brew tanks through large clear windows, too. I was pleasantly surprised by this brewery. From the outside it didn't look like anything special but the beers were great! I personally enjoyed the session IPA and the raspberry beer. They had a large selection of beers even some seasonal choices. We also ordered some soft pretzels as an appetizer and they were delicious! The only problem we ran into was an outdated beer menu and weblist but I'm sure they'll work out their kinks in time...or learn to pay more attention to details like this as a brewpub. I took a chance on their Black IPA and 'Love Me' American IPA. Both were pleasant to drink but neither are calling me back for more. Ok back here today and had an actual meal...yummy!!! I had the beef brisket, so tender and not dry..pretty awesome as far as brisket is concerned. My girlfriend had the baby back ribs O M G!!! The most amazingly juicy, fall off the bone ribs. This place takes #1 for those for sure. I liked the onion rings that I got (extra up charge) but, the batter they use for them is so hard that it kinda rips up your gums but, does taste really good. We also had the coleslaw, creamy & yummy, green beans...perfectly sautéed with a nice garlic flavoring. Very happy with this evening of BBQ!! Also the beer is always good.
