It's not as obvious, large, or advertised as other jewelers in the area, but well worth taking the effort to seek out. My new fiance and I came with some very specific ideas for a non-traditional engagement ring, and even brought our own stones, and Mary Beth didn't mind at all. She was genuinely excited about the creative process, and now that the ring is on my finger, I couldn't be happier. The work was exquisite and very personal, and we were brought into every step of the process. They are also the only jeweler I discovered who did not take advantage of the "engagement" label price inflation that seems to be the norm at major jewelers.

DO NOT take consignment items to this shop. I have taken items there 3 times. I was never called to say the items were unacceptable and yet have never seen an item on the racks ( I checked at least every 3 weeks) nor has a single dime made it to my account. When I asked why that might be the clerk said they probably were too low quality to sell! I assure you they were carefully curated and were not low quality. When checking out purchases they are often rude and act like they are doing you a huge favor. In future, my items will go to the United Way Clothes Closet where I know they will be used for good purposes by people who can really benefit from them.

A "bonus" of this place is it is located to a handy map of the downtown area and neat photo ops like the red London Telephone booth at the end of the block. You can even see the old safe, a potbellied stove and a jail cell in the back. We learned all of this from the delightful staffer, who also had homemade cookies set out! So that was pretty awesome. The shop itself is about 50% "antiques" (mostly Victorian era glassware), with the rest split between gifty stuff and alpaca merchandise. Now, you might think that's odd but Nueske's owns a herd of alpaca (why not?) and this the store sells alpaca socks, slippers and wonderfully soft woven blankets. If you're stocking up on bacon, it's worth a few minutes to check out this cute store.

The lady warned us that it might take a while because of the way the manufacturer does things. Summer turned to fall; fall to winter (which is awfully long here in Wisconsin but I digress). I called them because they couldn't pick up the phone and call me. I called twice and was told by a woman that it was on order. I asked when to expect it and was assured that it would be in about Mothers Day. Winter turned to spring (finally) and spring was in full force late in May. But I waited into June. I called twice and twice was told by a young woman that she would give the message to Al (the big cheese there). She said she would call back. Needless to say Al never called back. I decided to go in there, cancel my order and use my gift certificate for something else. I decided not to be angry. I told him that my calls hadn't been returned. He knew my name and so knew the situation. Despite all this there was not one single word that indicated remorse or an apology! If you go there never order something. Go to Home Depot where they deliver on their promises to order stuff. My old review: A plethora of plants, lawn ornaments, knick-knacks, lawn furniture packed into a relatively small location! They have a wide variety of stuff: kitsch to somewhat elegant. Fun to browse and check things out. The hired staff is friendly and helpful but stressed: I've been in there a number of times when there is a wait to get a staff member to help. For certain requests they seem to be required to talk to the owner, Al. Their plants look to be very well taken care of. Their parking lot is smallish.

Their staff is knowledgable and friendly, albeit sparse. You do have to seek them out, but when you find them, they are good. The best by far is Al, I'm assuming that he is the owner. He is tremendous and will take all the time you need to walk the grounds and help you pick out just the right solution for your needs. All of the local landscape designers direct their clients here - enough said. If you show up on a Saturday, expect to wait for assistance. The place is often packed, especially in spring and early summer. The quality of their trees, shrubs, and other plantings is tremendous. I don't really focus on price, as landscaping for me is a long term investment, so I don't know how they compare here. They have the largest selection in the area. If you have a specific need that they don't stock, they usually can get it ordered and delivered within a week or two. I have done this a number of times, all with good success. I have used them for four phases of our home landscape design, done professionally by Susie Murphy of Landscape Solutions (recommended). We started in 2008 and will finish in 2013. Window Box quality has remained strong during this time. If you prefer searching through the parking lot nurseries of Menards, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. then please stay there. It will help keep the crowds down here.
