Everything tastes fresh, the coffee is brewed well with a nice, balanced blend, and the ingredients speak for themselves. The staff has always been friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Every time I've been here, people genuinely seem to be enjoying themselves. At first glance, the burrito looked a little smaller than what some guests might expect. I even thought, "That bite better be flavorful." It absolutely was. Every bite was packed with flavor, and you can tell they don't cut corners on quality. I think it's important to remember that a scratch kitchen using organic, gluten-free, and non-dairy ingredients is operating with much higher food costs than places using generic products--especially with today's inflation. I'd rather have quality ingredients and great flavor than an oversized burrito that's just average. The only complaint I have isn't even about the café. The curb out front is a little high and my car door kissed it. That's more of a city issue than theirs. I came in today with a gift card that originally belonged to my aunt, who has since passed away. We found the gift card while going through her belongings after she passed, and I was trying to use the remaining balance. The owner told me that she needed to see the original email and wasn't sure if she could accept it. I explained that the gift card had been accepted the last time I used it and that they had simply typed in the gift card number. I also explained that I obviously didn't have the original email because it belonged to my aunt. The interaction made me feel as though I was being questioned about whether the gift card was legitimate or as though I was somehow trying to use something that wasn't mine. She then said that the gift card didn't even say Sweet Elle on it, only to look at the bottom and say, essentially, "nevermind, it says it right here." It was the way the situation was handled that really bothered me. I've also personally witnessed the owner being rude to her staff on multiple occasions, so this unfortunately didn't feel like an isolated interaction. I understand that businesses have policies and need to protect themselves, but there is a respectful way to handle situations like this, especially when a customer is simply trying to use a gift card that was legitimately given to them. It's especially disappointing because I have a substantial remaining balance on this gift card and genuinely enjoy their coffee. Unfortunately, after this interaction, I no longer feel comfortable supporting a business where I've felt this level of disrespect as a customer and have witnessed staff being treated poorly. I hope Sweet Elle takes a closer look at how these interactions are handled, because the coffee may be great, but the way customers and employees are treated matters just as much.
