I contacted Dr Killen's office and I explained to them that my relative had some cognitive decline and was disabled and without income so it was imperative that any new dentist we see accepts her insurance and that her insurance must cover all of the appointments (like her previous dentist), that she could not pay any money out of pocket. They looked through her insurance and assured me that they accepted it and she was fully covered for her first visit. This went on for several visits. I would check before and after EVERY appointment. Is she still covered? Is her insurance still good, do you still accept it? and every time I was told everything was fine and insurance was covering everything at the appointment. This is all in writing. Several months later they send a bill for over $600 to my elderly in law and then start sending her threatening letters about sending her to collections if she doesn't pay them what she owes. I thought this must be a mistake so I called to speak to them and they explained that they made a mistake with the insurance and that they are not even in network! This is the first they had ever told us this. I explained that my elderly in law would not be able to pay this bill that she is on Medicare and Medicaid and is disabled and they got very nasty with me. During this time I had been a patient of theirs paying full cash as I don't have insurance. I have always paid my bills in full I do not owe them any money. After the situation I no longer felt comfortable going to them for care so I booked a new dentist and now Dr Killen's office is refusing to release my medical records unless I pay this other relatives unpaid medical bill. Completely unprofessional. Another patient's unpaid medical bill should have nothing to do with releasing my personal records, regardless if I am related to that other patient. I would not trust them if they tell you that something is covered by insurance because they flat out lied to us. Not once did they ever tell us they weren't in network until *after* we said she can't pay this bill... you told us that insurance was covering everything, what changed? Unless you have money to burn I would avoid this dental office. They refuse to answer the phone for the new dental office and they stopped responding to my email when I asked them to clarify what another patient's unpaid balance had to do with releasing my personal records.

The office is tucked away on a street off NE 185th Street, just past the Harbor Homes. They have their own private lot, so parking is easy to find. Making an appointment was simple and quick, thanks to the helpful staff. My first visit to the office was back in October 2024. I was seen by Dr. Gillian Lim and the dental hygienist, Ben. Ben performed the initial exam and cleaning, and then Dr. Lim came in to greet me and do one final check and cleaning. The entire staff was very warm and welcoming! My first impression of the office and staff was so positive that I decided to bring my parents here as well. During my parents' initial visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Karen Wang, who was also very warm and welcoming to both them and me. She paid a lot of attention to my parents and made sure they were comfortable during their dental workup. Dr. Wang was very helpful in explaining any additional dental work that needed to be done and made sure to answer any questions I had. My mom even praised Dr. Wang for focusing entirely on her--the patient--rather than engaging in small talk with staff while working. She had experienced that kind of distracted care with a previous dentist and wasn't a fan of it. I would highly recommend Bothell Smiles Family Dentistry and their team to all of my family and friends! TL;DR: After years of searching, I finally found the perfect dental office--Bothell Smiles Family Dentistry! The staff is warm and welcoming, appointments are easy to book, and both Dr. Lim and Dr. Wang provide exceptional care. The office is conveniently located with private parking. I've even brought my parents here, and we've all had great experiences. Highly recommend to family and friends!

Despite me clearly stating that I'm on Apple Health and came in specifically for extractions and dentures, he repeatedly tried to upsell me on root canals and other procedures that were not realistic for my situation. For context, a previous dentist in South Carolina told me years ago that my teeth were not salvageable and that I should prepare for full extractions and dentures. My teeth are severely decayed, and even this dentist admitted that fillings would likely fall out if attempted. At this appointment, they took X-rays, did a cleaning, and tested my teeth for pain. Then I was left sitting in the chair for 20-30 minutes while he "looked at the X-rays again." When he returned, he offered no plan, no discussion of extractions, and no next steps. Instead, he told me to "talk to my family" and see what I could come up with. I was very clear about why I booked this appointment, and I left with no answers, no treatment plan, and feeling completely dismissed. To make matters worse, they requested feedback afterward and then argued back and forth with me when I explained why the experience was negative. If you are seeking dentures, extractions, or care that respects your financial reality and medical coverage, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

It felt like I came with one problem, but he tried to find problems in everything, as if nothing was right. Of course, the solution he offered was to "fix" it all, but only for more money. I understand that for him I'm a new patient and maybe that means good business, but honestly, he didn't build any trust with me. And when a doctor says that every other dentist does things wrong, it only makes me worry about how he would actually do my teeth.

I stopped coming last year after the practice dropped my Delta Dental insurance. I recently decided to give them another try because I now have dental insurance through Cigna. Before my most recent appointment, I sent my insurance information in advance by email and also confirmed it by phone. The office booked the appointment with no mention of any issues. I drove there, took time out of my day, and once I was already sitting in the chair, I was told that the practice had dropped all insurance and asked if I wanted to proceed, pay out of pocket, and then personally deal with whatever reimbursement my insurance might or might not provide later. This conversation happened with a dental hygienist, not an office administrator, despite the practice having administrative staff, and it was extremely uncomfortable. It felt inappropriate for a clinical provider to be put in the position of handling a billing and insurance issue. I declined and left, having wasted time commuting and attending an appointment that should never have been booked under these circumstances. This same situation has happened to me before and is exactly why I stopped going previously. What is most concerning is that all responsibility is placed on the patient. You are expected to manage insurance reimbursement yourself, the practice takes no accountability, and they reserve the right to charge whatever they choose, often well above standard ADA fee guidelines. There was also no follow-up of any kind from the office after the visit. No courtesy call, no acknowledgment, and no attempt to address the situation, which further reinforced the lack of professionalism. The office is beautiful and the staff is welcoming, but the lack of upfront communication, pricing transparency, and professional handling of insurance matters feels misleading. I am sharing this so others are aware and can ask very direct questions before booking, especially if insurance coverage matters to you.

I always try to support women owned business, and I looked pretty hard to find a dentist when I moved. Dr. Furman is kinda the only reason why anyone should consider coming to this practice. The front desk ladies greet you when you walk in, but it always feels forced. They are quite catty - have been overheard being judgy about patients both in English and in Russian and they don't seem to care who hears it. I've seen them roll their eyes and take on quite dismissive tones when a patient ask questions, which makes me very careful about how (or whether) I approach them. The first hygienist was super abrasive both in words and in her use of force. The second hygienist felt like she barely did anything in what should have been a deep cleaning. It was just unpleasant enough that I didn't immediately leave the practice, but after a few visits I decided that I rather drive 45 minutes back to my old hygienist at Complete Dentistry. I probably would not recommend, but if you're from an eastern block country, they would probably be quite lovely to you.

You don't send forms to be completed before the visit and then accost the patient for completing them. And you don't lie within 10 minutes of meeting someone and expect them to stay. I showed up on time. I filled out all the forms and talked with the tech/doctor. Margie comes over and says, "You're early." "Uh, I'm here on time." "Well, we didn't expect you to have the forms filled out. So right now, you need to stay here and relax." She pulled my tech away, who then sheepishly came back. "Did Margie say I was early?" "Well, you're not early, but..." "Is there a patient ahead of me?" "Um. Yes." "So you overbooked?" "Well, your paperwork wasn't supposed to be done, and..." She said it would be 20 minutes, but the patient ahead of me hadn't even been seated. I left. If your practice is comfortable lying within 10 minutes of meeting me while shifting the blame for overbooking, there is no way you're touching me. I've had five surgeries in three years, all of which I had to advocate for along the way: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/28/well/live/gaslighting-doctors-patients-health.html That self-advocacy breeds firm boundaries and your staff need some training about a) medical trauma and or b) how to lie more effectively when you overbook. If I receive a bill for today's visit, please understand that I will drag you to small claims court as loudly as possible, and then I'll write about why. ----- Upon reading this, Margie contacted me via email. She has thoughts about when appointments start and how career longevity stacks up against unprofessional conduct: Sarah I have read your email and I'm sorry about the confusion. The office always schedules the new patient to check in upfront 1/2 hour with front office staff . Your check in time was 11 am at 11:30 one of the assistants should bring you back in the clinical area to start Your exam, x rays, photo's. checking teeth and gum assessment. Yes ,you were in on time for your check in at 11 am and you were very efficient with your paperwork done. We brought you back before 11:30 which is why I mention that we would be a little longer before we could Start the exam process. I'm sorry if this wasn't conveyed to you on the initial phone conversation about check in Time and when we actually bring you back. We would never over book a patients appointment . We really want to be able to give you and all our patients equality time and earn the patients trust. If you felt that you were "accosted" regarding filling out your paperwork I would like to know what happen so I can address the employee. We always want to treat people with respect . As too the medical trauma that you were mentioning it is of great importants that we take into consideration with the patients medical history before we ever proceed with any treatment on a patient. Lastly I would like to address the "lying within 10 minutes of minutes of meeting me" comment. I believe there was a miscommunication. WE are here to help patients to improve there equality of health which we take very serious. We are and have always been very transparent with all patients and will continue to be so. I am very sorry that your appointment was not the best experience and that you were not able to stay for your appointment today. I understand your prospective why you decided that you need to leave and not continue your appointment from reading your email. If you would ever want to come back and let us try to help the offer to be a patient is still open and I would be happy to help you personally ( I've have 40 years experience) I can assure you that you would be very welcome Please consider coming back. Sincerely Margie Office Manager,RDA
