Our car host made it fun for kids and adults, and I wish I could remember his name to give him a proper shout out.

I've been going to this carnival since I was a little kid. Some years it's very good and some years it's horrible. This review will be based on this year (2018). The first thing I noticed was Rockwell Amusements started putting effort again this year. They had a few rides and a bunch of carnival games. Lacking on the food though with only dough boys, candy apples cotton candy and snow cones which were over priced. $5 for dough boys and $5 for candy apples is a bit ridiculous. The dough boys and candy apples are good though. All the stuff from Rockwell is overpriced including the rides and games. The church does a very nice job with what they do. My favorite thing is the pan game. You put a quarter down on a color and throw a ball and if it lands on the color you pick you get however many quarters that color is worth. The lady running that game is very nice too. There is a little building that the church sells food out of for cheaper than what Rockwell charges. The church food is different though. I tried the clam cakes which were ok, mostly just batter with about one clam in each clam cake. I also tried the onion rings which were pretty good and the "Hot roasted peanuts" which they roast to put in bags to sit out and get room temperature. All the people running the stuff from the church are very nice. They say the carnival closes at 11pm put the church shuts down most of their stuff by 10:30. Rockwell on the other hand doesn't close until 11. It's a small carnival but they use as much space as possible for stuff with still leaving room to walk around. I think this carnival could really benefit from some different types of carnival food like what they show on the TV show "Carnival Eats".

But my now LA-based daughter was visiting, and wanted to see the Welcome blanket exhibit since her friend had one on display. (I'm not certain how a museum here is the recipient of 330 handmade quilts and blankets - 99 of which are on display - that will be distributed by Dorcas House to new immigrants, but it's pretty cool right? Maybe because southern New England was the center of US cloth manufacture through the early-mid 20th century?) Ad for the Museum itself: the cultural component of this mill community is front and center. The space is set up in a number of immersive dioramas - rooms and areas visitors walk through to get an experience of those who lived there. The first stop is a farm cabin in Quebec in snowy winter where (push the doorbell) a family decides to move south in the hope of a better life working in the mills. In the replica of a French Canadian Catholic Church we read about religious life in America, and sit in pews near the actual mosaic altar boys to learn a bit about the wave of immigration and the mill worker experience, there's a credit union (kind of explains the Bailey Savings & Loan in It's a Wonderful Life). There's a school room, complete with a teacher/priest and books in the desks in French and English. On the stairs to the second floor, pass posters and stories about others groups of immigrants to the area, along with the rooms upstairs: Woonsocket baseball players, tenement houses, mill and factory memorabilia, and a room set up with the equipment workers toiled at. Oh - dint miss the display of a union hall! My daughter buzzes through art museums. We were here for about 2 hours. And then we got to the room with the blankets. Quite a relevant history lesson here!

Then you have to drive at a tilt and try to figure out which of the 3 crooked hill screens all facing each other is yours, off-roading over apocalyptic concrete to find a reasonable view/angle. The kids working try to tell you where to park -- there were 4 other cars in the back row at our screen, and he told us to park next to them. Ummm, why should early arrivers get the worst spot? We abided at first, but we were at such an angle left-to-right, we moved more to the left, where the incline of the drive-in mountain still existed, but at least the slope was straighter up-and-down. (tbh, my back still hurts from the incline our car was at.) The bathroom toilets and floors are literally covered in feces. You could hear the audio from both other movies loud and clear during your movie. They don't show anything on-screen before the movie starts so you can make sure you have the station tuned in right, so if you have an old-school radio, good luck finding the station in the first 5 minutes of dialogue. There are no clear roads, so leaving in the dark weaving between people parked EVERYWHERE, going up and down the most awkward cement, is honestly very scary. This place was such a dump. And for them to charge $33 per car for the garbage amenities is absolutely WILD! Do yourself a favor and avoid.

The winery is open 12-4 on weekends and allows you to bring in your own food, which was the perfect way for us to enjoy some local wine in a beautiful setting. There is seating inside the house, outside on a covered patio area, and they have tables scattered across the lawn so there are many options to pick from. We each decided on a wine flight before selecting some bottles and paired it with the snack trays we brought from home and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon together on the grounds of this vineyard. One thing to note, the road to the winery is very narrow so they employ a metered light system at the beginning of the road. It's important to wait for the red light to turn off before driving down the narrow stretch. The person in front of me didn't do this and ended up having to back up (reverse) down a narrow and winding path to allow the incoming cars (who had the right of way) through. For visitors with mobility needs, there is a grass parking lot and lots of cobblestones and lose rock to navigate during your time here, so be mindful of that. There are a few stairs in order to gain entry into the house to shop/select the wines and the bathroom is not wheelchair accessible.

When I arrived she and her husband were having a very genial conversation with the owner Dave at the outdoor seating area. The vineyard is clearing some land and the entrance drive, at the time of my visit, was strewn with downed timber and a large dirt parking area at the end. There is a sign on the street pointing you into the driveway. Once the introductions were over Dave told us about the vineyards he has and the one's he plans to plant. Where he gets grapes from and how he produces his wine. We walked in to the converted barn which is beautifully decorated with a large bar in the center and comfortable seating areas around the perimeter. They have a rack of bottles ready to be sold and a gift box display. The day we went there were four or five wines available. Once a type has sold out, it's done for the season so those who know and like Dave's wine know when to head over to make their purchases. Some offerings are ready in Spring while others are not available until Autumn. I ended up purchasing two bottles each of three of the available wines. The Riesling is a bit dry and not too sweet. Lovely. The Cab had a nice 'full mouth' feel to it and a clean finish. I have been disappointed by other RI wine producers and to be honest I didn't have high expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised. We also had an opportunity to meet Dave's wife and children. This is truly a family business. With each new arrival, Dave made a point to say hello, get their name, tell them his and pour them a glass. We sampled each of the available wines but others came in just to enjoy a glass. The atmosphere was such that everyone was chatty with each other even though we were strangers. It made for a very enjoyable visit. This vineyard is in the woods and the drive up is just beautiful along winding back roads. On a beautiful, sunny Saturday, it made for a very enjoyable day. If I could suggest just one thing it would be to offer a small snack. This may be a sticky wicket as they are a wine producer, not a restaurant and I'm sure that brings up a whole other set of laws. During our visit his 'intern' showed up with a spinach and pepperoni calzone which he offered all around. It was just delightful and I was very happy to have something to eat after sampling several wines. Maybe next time I'll just bring along a snack to share. I hope that's OK.
