I am not quite sure why this restaurant does not have consistently high marks in its service food and ambience. I'm going to read through some of the criticisms after I'm done saying this however before I become biased, I'm going to suggest that for as many times as I have been to the black walnut café, I have had incredible service very reliable food and the ambience more than adequate. Today I ate on the patio with some good friends because we arrived early servers were available to take our orders. Typically when you sit on the patio, you have to go in and place your orders however, this particular day we did not which was very pleasant. Coffee was poured with regularity and we simply enjoyed ourselves with a lengthy discussion with good food and with great service. I truthfully enjoy this restaurant. read more

We had a very nice dining experience here in Cinco Ranch at the Black Walnut. It had been awhile since we had been to one and decided to give them another try. We had previously dined at the one on the Woodlands. The order process is counter service and they bring it your table. Self serve drink and utensil area are also in the equation. Food was good. I think the overall winners were the Nashville hot chicken and the Pot Roast Grilled Cheese. The Mahi Mahi tacos needed more season on the fish and the Alfredo on the Chicken Parm was a little watery. Overall, the restaurant was clean but had to bring it to managers attention that the bathroom needed some attention. Small fixable things for sure, but we would definitely dine there again when in the area. read more

Went to Black Walnut with my family for dinner a few weeks ago and wasn't too big of a fan. The food was brought out after a long while and was cold on arrival. The flavors were also not all there to me and moreso on the blander side. The restaurant is quite large with plentiful seating and the overall ambience is that of an American diner. Unlikely to come back because of the quality of the food and the lack of flavor. The menu is not inexpensive either, so definitely felt more difficult to justify the prices. read more

Recently visited and less than ideal review. I was reached out by management asked to come back for another try. So I did... Let's just say there was no improvement. As matter of fact it was worse. Ordered an American burger and the French toast with two beverages. Go to the coke station and it glitches to where it doesn't function properly.... Iced tea it is. Go outside to wait for lunch. Guy comes by drops off food and asks if we need anything. I say ketchup and silverware. Got half. Silverware came. I get up to get the ketchup and the sever comes back as says he severed me the wrong American burger. He was stammering a bit so I couldn't understand if it was temp of the requested cook or it was missing toppings. I say it's okay. I'll eat it regardless. I don't want to waste food over cook temp or missing topping. And he began to say it's someone else's. Then said hold on. I then start to think if they were just going to take this item and then serve it to another guest... that's weird. Another person comes out and tells me that the burger order wasn't mine and then offered me a new one. Again I said it's fine I don't want to waste food. Burger wasn't all that great anyways. Heavily seasoned with salt and had that right out of the freezer taste. Overall. Mistakes happen I get it. But it was a weird interaction. I'm sure this dialogue of the process seems innocuous but in the moment it was weird. Furthermore with a second chance given this place isn't really for me. read more

My first visit to Black Walnut Cafe and I will be back! Went for breakfast and ordered eggs, potatoes and the chicken Gouda sausage! It was delicious- so was the house blend coffee! Service was amazing ! Prices are a bit high for breakfast - but what I am wanting to brag about is the amazing desserts. We ordered a lemon cake slice to split and it was incredible. There was a blueberry topping put on it which was not necessary as the cake was perfect! There wait staff at the bar where we sat were so attentive. I wished that the host would have explained more when we walked in- had no idea where coffee was or where to sit. After paying we were handed our coffee cups and a pager. Ambiance: I've visited other Black Walnut locations before and have had great dishes, I never left a review so here's one from my most recent experience. Across the board, all locations are clean and the environment is very welcoming. Order: Ham and cheese Omelet: The omelet was chefs kiss but the sausage was underwhelming (overpriced for something I could by at the local grocery store.) Lemon Blueberry Pancake Stack: My husband loved the pancake, and thought the jam was a great touch. He felt the same way as I did about the sausage. The restaurant has a nice exterior, and there were plenty of seating indoors and some seating outdoors. You order at the front and then take a number with you. Decided to do Houston Restaurant Week (HRW) dinner menu. Service was alright. 1st HRW course: Coconut shrimp was pretty good. Got to try some of the H2Omelon salad; not bad. Non-HRW item: cup of creamy tomato basil soup (good but a little too much cheese in the soup) 2nd HRW course: creole crab cakes (Cajun flavor was there; wished the crab cake was slightly crispy; the sweet potato fries were hot but soft and not well fried; the salad that came with this dish was refreshing). Got to try some of the Blackened steak frites (the meat was unfortunately a bit tough to chew) 3rd HRW course (dessert): strawberry cake, tastes how it sounds Food-wise I knew what to expect from Black Walnut Cafe; quality is ok but the HRW dinner menu wasn't really worth the price. Servings are a good size that will leave you filling satisfied. There are many drink options available from soft drinks to cocktails. The avocado toast is very good on taste, it is expensive, and you only get one toast. The steak and eggs are delicious and the serving is large. Despite being very busy on weekends, service is quick. Today around noon walked in as a party for 8. A nice gentleman helped us out gather a table outside, the wait was probably like 15 minutes tops. No rush either, because it gave us time to look over the menu and order. I like the set up how you walk in order and sit down till your order is ready. Makes the process easier, the outside patio was nice and especially with today's weather. The staff just were amazing today, very impressed. Now onto the food, I have the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. The only thing is that as we all ordered separately but one after the other my food came out first. Bummer because I don't like eating without everyone else having their plate yet. So, I ordered the coleslaw on the side because the cashier actually suggested it because it could cause the bun to become soggy. Definitely recommend. I love a sweet slaw, was up there for me. The bar was a busy place even for a late morning, but we looked at the bar prices which raised our eyebrows. This is upscale food, drink and association place. The service wasn't a slouch with lots of waiters. Ordering is as you come in by menu. Appears to be a good breakfast place. Again, some prices were beyond pricey others more reasonable. Once ordered you will be given a beeper to tell you when the food is ready. You'll need to find a place. Your waitstaff should have visited you and taken the beeper number. You go get your drinks. If it's soft drinks they come from a universal soft drink machine. Even the appetizers requires.time. It's not chips and salsa, although the choice is there. Our appetizer and food came out at the same time and were served in one stop by the waitstaff We were not that happy and we got fried cauliflower for the appetizer.Acceptable but we will consider other choice should we return. Very oily. Cheeseburger and fries were good. We both had burgers, neither thought it was worthy of the gotta go back award. The waiter offered and we accepted to buy a dessert. Ahh, this is where the forte is. I had the black forest cake with cherries, she had the hummingbird cake. There was no taste testing between us for the other person. A fairly decent spot to grab breakfast. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so I'll have to give the lunch and dinner menu a try another time. The steak was well-done with some nice flavor to it, definitely kudos for that as this is just a cafe and not a fine dining steakhouse. The eggs and hash browns were pretty average in my opinion, but the hot sauce pictured in the review certainly enhanced the flavor, which worked out well. I will say the portion size was slightly smaller than at other typical breakfast spots I have been to. This is my second time here, and both times the customer service has been great thanks to many of the employees. I would recommend this place and will be a returning customer. Service was super friendly. The person who took our order was very cheerful as well. My husband got the Big Plate and I got Chicken & Waffles. We also got a mimosa and beermosa. All was DELICIOUS. My chicken was tender and crispy, waffles were fluffy, eggs cooked perfectly. I'm glad we found this place and more glad we beat the brunch rush. As soon as we sat down the line got super long. SUMMARY: cute spot, good American food, a bit on the pricey end! FOOD: the Asian-glazed Scottish salmon is a hearty dish and is quite delicious. The pesto rice side was a nice pairing with the salmon (costs extra). However, the fish tacos are a bit too heavy on the lettuce and not enough on the fish quantity. The bacon deviled eggs were very tasty and not your typical deviled eggs. This is one of this restaurants where you pay for your food upfront and then it's brought to the table. Absolutely a great choice for dining w kids. This restaurant is cozy, great variety of food for picky palates and service is phenomenal. Haven't been to BW since the SL location closed down years ago. We tried this for brunch one day, and most recently for dinner. Everyone was happy with their meals.
