This was a trip down memory lane for me. I would always visit Black Swan when I was in college and hadn't been back in almost 2 years. The interior changed a bit and their menu is a lot bigger now. I don't know how to explain it but the vibes here are always the best. Everyone working here is nice and will make conversation with you! Their drinks are always made perfectly. I got a large matcha today with a little simple syrup. On a hot day like this, the iced drink was definitely hitting the spot. It was so nice being back in Newark and going to Black Swan, I hope I can come back again soon!
I've been here a handful of times now and every time, my visit has been consistent. The staff is quite nice and knowledgeable about the coffees they make and serve. I'm always asked whether I want to dine in or get it for takeout. In fact they always assume, I'm dining in and I usually have to tell them it's the opposite. One of these days, I will have my coffee and pastry to stay. The cups used for dine in appear to be sturdy and of good quality. They always have a good selection of bakery items available. They seem to know if their regulars are. Whenever I'm there I always see them greet each other by name. They have their own rewards program via Cashapp. I always order a flat white and it's been consistently the right temperature and taste every single time. They always acknowledge my 7 year old and treat him like a big customer. He appreciates that a lot and that's what earns my loyalty. It's a black owned business. Starbucks is literally right in front of them on the next street. You can see them from the cafe. I will continue to come here though because I like supporting small businesses and the product is the quality and consistency that I like it at.
Was recommended to come here and it did not disappoint. Gigi took so much care to suggest a drink for me, and make this beautiful design. I didn't try a treat but they looked delicious.

I work in downtown Newark and I'm not anti-Starbucks/Dunkin/whatever popular chain per se but I am definitely pro-mom and pop/local/Black owned so I was excited to try Black Swan! My iced chai was great & the wait wasn't bad at all. It's a small space so if you're looking to sit, stake out a seat and maybe you'll get lucky. Starbucks will never see me again.

Unfortunately couldn't go in because of covid, however, there was a nice little set up to see the menu at their front window along with pastries/bagels just below at the front window. Right now you can order at the front door with one of the very friendly baristas. Great place for a quick coffee or latte. I enjoyed my mocha latte with almond milk. The almond milk did not over power the espresso or mocha flavor. For me, the mocha syrup was a tad bit too sweet for my liking but otherwise I slurped it down in my usual 5 seconds lol (I dont know how ppl sip coffee and have it last for an hour. I sip sip sip sip sip and it's gone in seconds). They accept Apple and google pay too. From what I could see, there isn't much seating inside but I think on non covid days the front window is usually a small bar table seating. Definitely recommend coming to Black Swan!
Such a cute little coffee shop! They have some of the best coffee I've ever tasted with delicious baked goods. The staff is nice and friendly. They didn't mind repeating themselves when asked & this was the first time in a while I haven't had to mention my disability. I stopped in during the weekday at about 10:15a. I only waited a few minutes then more started to come in. The shop is small so I wouldn't suggest entering with a wheelchair, but it's not impossible. Overall, this is a great hidden gem if you're in the mood to study, WFH, or have coffee without feeling obligated to visit a corporate establishment.
Let me start off by saying I am coffee and espresso enthusiast and formerly a barista so I understand how drinks are made, and even if I'm not-- anyone who orders the same drink over and over will know how their drink is made. I placed my order with the woman at the kiosk. I ordered a large iced Americano with 3 shots of espresso and I asked for a SPLASH of cream. The man working was the one preparing drinks. I saw there was a drink being prepared that did not look like what I wanted. It was a cup of ice filled with milk so I assumed it wasn't mine. To my surprise it was my drink .. the man working asked me what milk I wanted and I replied I didn't want any milk and only asked for a splash of cream. The woman responded and said she had added the cream in the cup, I kindly asked if it was just a little since that's what I asked for. The man rudely responded and tried to explain to me how Americano is made which I told him I understood but I was double checking what I asked for was correct. He then says to me in a condescending tone "what color do you get when you add water to cream or milk?" I stood there shocked and told him he was being condescending which he then responded "I'm not I'm explaining to you so you don't think I f***ed up your drink" I was honestly in shock with the way I was being spoken to that way and responded with "it's fine" and left. And yes you did ruin my drink with your nasty attitude!
I was in the mood for an espresso, and was headed to Newark to run errands. Thanks to "Yelp" I found the perfect coffee shop, conveniently located on Halsey street in downtown Newark. The location is small, quaint, but upscale, and trendy. Great place to grab your cappuccino, latte, or espresso, and have a chat with friends. The atmosphere is perfect. The staff are very friendly, the service was absolutely perfect, and they were kind enough to get my order ready quick. I was parked illegally, and had to hurry. At the counter you will find baked goods, an array of bottled waters, and you can order various styles of coffee. I always go for the Americano which did not disappoint. The coffee was fresh, rich, and perfect for the cold, frigid day today. I highly recommend if your in the downtown area of Newark, and wish to have an amazing coffee experience, give this place a try. I think they are a million times better than Starbucks. You will not be disappointed.
Came the week of Christmas, and it was slightly busy but our drinks came out quickly still. We got almond and an oat milk lattes, both which were hot and good. No weak espresso here. The service was a bit stand off ish until the end where we were wished a happy holiday quite warmly. All in all, a good experience.
Great coffee and pastry. Light and bright with a friendly vibe. Pets welcome too. What's not to love?

Really good coffee. We came because the local fast food coffee maker was out of all items. The chai tea latte was really good. The cranberry muffin as well. It was packed but the 1 barista made it work. It's a nice local shop read more

So glad the americano i ordered was delicious, because the service was downright terrible! No hello, just a look from the guy behind the counter. He finished the drinks he was working on and gave me a head nod to signal he was ready to take my order. Did the same to the people that came in after us. Two girls even walked in and stood there for a bit unacknowledged and walked out without ordering. The guy did not seem to care one bit...bet the owner would knowing he's losing money due to poor service. read more

Cozy coffee shop!! Good coffee and small selection of pastries. Nice service as well and some charm. Don't think there is a bathroom and seating is pretty limited: ~2 sitting low tables, some bar space and a window table w/ 3 high chairs. I think they carry Dough donuts which are delicious. read more

Coming from the West Coast, the area in Newark is a place I haven't had the chance to discover. I wish I did sooner, solely because of Black Swan Espresso. Black Swan Espresso is a coffee shop that I wish every city had. The coffee is sourced from some of the most prominant origins. I ordered a vanilla latte with oat milk, and it was easily one of the best coffees I've had in years. I sit here pondering if I should buy another. Camilo, my barista, really knows his stuff! While sitting in and doing homework, not only was the staff incredible, but every local sparked up a conversation. Great vibes all around. If you're ever in Newark looking for a great coffee spot, this is the place to go. 100% hands down. read more

I got a Carmel latte and the avocado toast..the coffee was decent as well as the toast, they only give you one slice but the bread is delicious. The atmosphere is cute but really small, only about 6 seats inside, they have outdoor seating too which is nice. Overall a decent place, nice staff, and what I got is good, I would recommend if you want something quick and light. read more

This coffee shop is a cute cafe near Rutgers Newark. I ordered a latte and croissant to go. Delicious! Great spot to pick up a quick bite and support a quality local business. They also have a point system which I think gives you free things when you earn enough points. One thing to note is that there is some indoor seating, but it is small and there are only a few seats so just keep that in mind. But definitely check them out and get a tasty treat! read more

Nice aesthetically pleasing coffee shop in Newark. The build out is very open and full of light. The spaces put me in a very creative space. Either a grab and go spot, or sit with laptop ! Staff is super attentive and efficient read more

Several months ago, on a business trip to Newark a client suggested we meet at Black Swan. On the appointed date, fifteen minutes before the appointed meeting time, I first entered the atmosphere of Black Swan, a warm cafe-like coffee shop with unmistakable charm. Not to mention killa vibe. Unfortunately, my client had another agenda. We left before I could order my chai latte. Today, back in Newark, I retraced my tracks to have that latte. So glad I did. Black Swan was every bit of its promise of what I remembered and more. You know the feeling when a place has heart. A human touch you're unlikely to find at a chain. Its decor and music are elegant, tasteful, authentic. You're welcomed and treated like a person. How novel? Atop all of that, Black Swan make a really good chai latte. read more
Black Swan Expresso is a welcome addition to the city of Newark! It's located right on Hasley street, so you get a lovely window view of the city but conveniently located within only a 5 to 10 minute walk to Rutgers Campus. The shop is small. It's literally a whole in the wall, but probably the prettiest whole in the wall I've seen! Seriously! Black Swan is cozy, charming, and modern all at once, with brick walls and local art hanging on the walls. The shop is small but there is a decent amount of seating. A few small tables along the wall, counter seating, and stools by the window... perfect to grade papers or read a book on a Saturday morning. Black Swan is known for their expresso (hence the title) and they live up to their name by delivering a strong savory brew. They also rotate choices of single origin pour over coffee. I had the Brazilian just recently and it was fantastic. Drip coffee and cold brew is also available as well as an assortment of tea. They have a number of baked goods... donuts, croissants, cookies!!! I typically avoid sugar but I splurged in a giant walnut chocolate chip cookie here and it was so worth the calories! Yummy in my tummy... and paired with a Guatemalan pour over hot coffee ... perfection! Staff/baristas are professional, warm, and welcoming. They know their trade well and are happy to answer any questions you might have. My only complaint is the price for the pour over single origin coffee is a bit high for the small size. Regardless, I think this a great addition to Newark. read more

Almond croissant is delicious!!!! This is the 2nd place I've found with these exact croissants in the tri-state area! They have a variety of doughnuts and pastries: hibiscus donut, lemon poppy seed donut, and more. In addition to coffee, they have a lot of tea options! I usually get the chai when I'm in the mood for a latte. I did try the yellow tea once, and I should warn you, I was super energized! So if you need some waking up, give it a try! Only thing I don't like are the lids...can't really explain, but the suction is off lol ...figured I would write this on Yelp. If not here, then where. Place is on the small side, however, they do have seating and a parklet right out front! Love those summer days! Overall, this is a great addition to downtown Newark! Absolute delight to pop in this local gem. Rich and robust brews and coffees. For those not into serious caffeine a well curated selection of teas is available. Gigi thoughtful and welcoming presence softens the cold and early mornings . The warm and cozy store also features a range of art from local artists available for purchase. Cannot recommend enough the decadent chocolate chip cookies and muffins here! For an invigorating taste of the UK, try to the off menu London Fog, it's their fancy Earl grey (which has a relaxing flow of lavender) with a shot of espresso and milk. read more
