I loveeee black rock with a passion it is quite literally the only coffee place I go to, but this location unfortunately is not the best. I went around 11:40 today and ordered three drinks, a medium fuel, a medium caramel Blondie iced and a medium pumpkin spice latte with whipped cream and extra caramel drizzle along with a heated up blueberry muffin. We received all of our drinks with the pumpkin spice, not having caramel drizzle or whipped cream on it. You know fine easy fix not to mention we added extra caramel drizzle on the caramel Blondie as well. That drink was the strongest I have ever had it and when I received all my drinks, they told me to have a good day just for me to realize like two hours later that they did not give me my blueberry muffin at all so not only did they forget my toppings on the pumpkin spice, but they also forgot my blueberry muffin, which is not cheap. And obviously conveniently they don't pick up phone calls so now I am out about five dollars. I understand things happen. I used to work as a barista but every other location I've gone to they have never forgotten a single thing that I have ordered. This was the first time I've gone to a black rock in there forgotten not one, not two, but three things. Also, they could definitely improve on customer service. The only couple words I got was oh do you have a rewards number and that was it. Again understand things happen and obviously not everyone is in a talkative mood. But like you're in a customer service job serving food. The least you could do is have a slight conversation and/or actually remember the stuff I bought with money just saying would be nice. read more

Horrible experience a girl who works there purposely makes my drink wrong each time I go, I'm there so often she knows exactly who I am and the two times out of like 100 ive spoken up and I've asked her to fix it she rolled her eyes and gave attitude and then on makes it horrible. The sweetest girls work here. We went three times during our visit from CA. The coffee is so so good! We tried the iced vanilla latte, Carmel blonde, cinnamon latte, and hazelnut latte. Spankin' new building which is home to the first Treasure Valley location of Portland based Block Rock Coffee. (Tip: Another with same local management opening downtown soon). The greeting by people who work here is robust and warm. If only the coffee was as good. The coffee was mediocre for our palates and lukewarm in the cup, the service behind counter, friendly as it was, could use some process tune up and training and the interior was not an inviting place to linger. This could be generational for sure. In other words, "It's not you, it's me." Constructively offered (I hope) observations follow. I would sure like to see this place succeed with the right audience even if I'm not a member of it. One and done for me to be a Black Rock customer. BACKGROUND Portland is a coffee-crazed city (no worries, I am one of crazies for the beverage myself) and there are lots of great coffee options there. Black Rock is likely middle of the pack for Portland options but it seems they are expanding elsewhere, although whether franchising or locally managed branches of corporate owned I don't know. Note the following snippet from the main Black Rock website. "No person is an island. No matter how many friends we collect on our devices, there will always be a longing to truly know others and be known. At Black Rock, our aim is to fuel that fire by being more than a coffee company... we are a people company." LOCATION VIBE As warm and welcoming as is that Black Rock statement and as friendly are the staff at this location, there isn't a single thing about the interior here that would make me want to linger in "community". The vibe is all cold industrial meets rustic of concrete floors, hard wood tables of various heights, uncomfortable chairs of the same and high exposed ceilings which bounces off sound, including too loud music, which made it "HUH?" loud on a day when there weren't more than six customers in the place. The chairs and tables are too tightly spaced; if it were even half full it would be as if a sardine can. That there was trouble getting even the furniture in the space without people to fill it was evidence by chairs askew in front. And there is the oddest location of a multi tier shelf with merchandise branded materials, like t shirts and coffee travel cups, that stands in the middle of the space as obstacle course. As much as we tried to linger and enjoy our coffee and sweet treat, we only made it a few minutes before out of there. And tossed out the coffee on the way out the door. We'll get back to that. SERVICE The staff gets highest marks for friendliness. But the signs up on the wall for coffee beverages are far enough away with small enough print to be tough to see and when I asked the person helping us a pretty simple question of what was their darkest roast that day the response was "We drip our coffee." Yes, and what is the darkest? "Not sure" was the response. When I asked who made the pastries in the case (some so high up off the floor that even on tip toe one can't see the top of them) the same response of "Not sure". The good news is this person finally asked for help. But there seemed to be more staff than needed behind the counter and a little chaos in the mix. COFFEE For the record, in my limited experience with Black Rock they do three coffees. Pearl = light. Old Town = medium. Steel Bridge = dark. But I couldn't remember the names when I was at the counter and there didn't seem to be any signage to help point a customer in the direction. Nor did the person behind the counter have the information. Regardless, whatever it was that was poured in the cup was pretty mild and also not very hot. A few sips and it was time to break up with the cup and let it go. EATS For the record, the pastries in the case are from Gaston's bakery. A good thing. At mid afternoon there were lots left to choose from. Including an entire row of raspberry danish and marionberry scones on the top shelf of the display case. Which might still be there since one literally couldn't see the tops of them up so high and had to ask "Umm, what's up there?" THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: Private lot and on both sides of the building. 2) DRIVE THROUGH: Yep. 3) ACCESSIBILITY: One parking spot back side of lot, clear path of travel to and through door, all one one level, some seating accessible, loo is too. 4) LOO: Two and both unisex. 5) LOCATION TIP: Look across lot you'll see back of Homestead Grill. read more

Trendy, modern coffee bar with pretty unique decor and amazing atmosphere. The staff is very kind and quite friendly. I always order my typical small vanilla latte and every now and then will try one of their pastries. In my experience, they typically run out of pastries once it gets busy in the afternoon but that doesn't take away from the fact that customers still swarm in for a little boost me up. I really like their benches and furniture. Extremely elegant and has that brand new feel. Lets not forget about their cool swag and merchandise which is definitely on par with the trendy styles and outfits in today's culture. By the way, their background music selections ranges from "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi to "24K Magic" by Bruno Mars, just a little bit of everything for all generations! Every now and then when the weather gets hot, flies can get inside and can be quite annoying. Not sure what the store can do to remedy this but it's good to be aware. I liked my espresso, my iced tea, and my chocolate chip/cream cheese muffin. I read other reviews that complained about their dry cappuccinos, etc, and since I had no idea what any of their weird drinks were, I concluded that those people aren't looking for the same things in a cafe that I am. I am glad I stopped in and tried them out. I was very satisfied ... but perhaps I'm just not knowledgeable enough about why you'd want your cappuccino to be dry or your baked goods to be displayed at ground level. I just want something to pick me up (the espresso shot), something to quench my thirst (the iced tea), and something sweet. By the way, I am 5'5" and I can see everything I need to see. read more

Yeah that's right the bean and how it's roasted. Not all coffee is the same and everyone likes their coffee a certain way. I know you guys want to know how I like my coffee and I'll tell you, I love it dark and bitter. Some of you may say that it fits my personality, and on some days, you're right it not only fits my personality but my soul. For the rest of the days, I think it balances my overly positive attitude and keeps me grounded ( coffee pun ). I like Blackrock because it's not Human Bean or Dutch Bros. While those guys are ok, it's not me and my personality but most of all, I'm not fan of added sugars to my drinks. I ordered a coffee through drive through this morning, the girl at the window did not fully close the lid , the moment she handed me the coffee, the lid opened and hot coffee spilled all over my legs and my car seat. They gave me 2 free coffee voucher but didn't apologize at all, the whole time they act like they don't know what happened and it was not them. I always go to this spot for coffee, but this time they gave me the worst service ever. At least be a decent human being apologize and own up to your own mistakes. Will not return! read more

I asked about swiss water decaf and they seemed annoyed at the question and then I ordered a breve latte, and they felt compelled to call it a breve, which is actually just half and half. I stopped by here on their third day of operation. I don't think I'll be coming back... their coffee was good I'll give them that... but the ambiance was not what I would recommend for anyone that's not a super athletic and hip. The flies in the establishment drove me crazy. They have a pull up wall that is rather cool, but there is no fan to keep the flies out. It was "random" give away day. I was there 30 minutes and we didn't get anything, which is fine, but every (literlly) person in there got something except me and this other larger person. When asked it was completely random. Then the next skinny person got a branded item and not the other fella or I... right in front of us. Almost as if they don't want us to represent the brand. I decided to stay a few and contine watching and 12 additional skinny people got stuff and not the other heavy person that came in. In fact, there was no hi... how are you... nothing. I came here on their grand opening day! This is their 1st Black Rock's Idaho coffee shop. They offer a free 16 oz drink all day! They have something going on for the whole week for their grand opening special; like a free drink today, 2 for 1 tomorrow, random give away on Sun and such. The line sure was long but it moved quick. I got their Jackhammer, which is coffee w/ Irish cream, vanilla breve w/6 shots! I loved it! The coffee is not bitter and it's not too sweet! Great tasting coffee! I recommend only using their drive thru. My main complaint with this location is that if you order from inside the store, they take a really long time to give you your coffee. I counted at least 5 cars pass through the drive thru while I stood there waiting today. read more

I rarely find myself out on this side of town, so I've only stopped in here a few times, but each time I've stopped in I've had a great experience. I've tried a few of their specialty drinks and have enjoyed those. However, if you're not one for sweet drinks, I'd recommend requesting half the flavor. Wasn't too impressed. Went in this afternoon and got a caramel mocha, which was decent. I really liked the look of the place, but the ordering process was awkward and nobody seemed very friendly. I sat there the whole time drinking my mocha and kept swatting flies away, even though the garage type door was closed. I understand that having flies in a building is common, but this was a freakish amount. It wasn't a very relaxing or inviting place to sit and enjoy my drink. I kept over hearing very loud conversations between the employees and wish their was some music to distract from that. Not really sure if I will be back. read more

Stopped by on their second day open. Good things: friendly staff, prices seemed reasonable, not an overly large menu. Is a very cool space with reclaimed wood on the walls and metal/wood furniture. Also give them props for using local bakery Gaston's for the bagels and the day we were there they had local food truck "Waffle me up" in the parking lot. Has a Drive thru if you're in a hurry. Not so good things: the coffee really wasn't great. It was ok. I usually get an Americano when I go out for coffee, and that's what I had here. My husband had the drip coffee. Was not as rich tasting as I like - maybe it's a lighter roast or something. (I prefer Java Coffee house or Dawson Taylor drip). Did not try any of the latte/mocha drinks so cannot comment on those. read more

Love black rock , the seating is nice the pastries are good and the coffee is always amazing! The only things that bothered me when I was there for about an hour or two is the blaring music and the flies. I know you can't do much about the flies but the loud music made it hard to talk with the person I was with. read more

Sorry but their coffee is flavorless. The staff are pleasant and efficient which is why I gave them 3 stars instead of 2. My wife disliked her latte and they replaced it promptly, and clearly the staff know a lot of the patrons. I got a premium drink, the Blackout, and that was probably a mistake because it was really sweet. The flavor profile was just off. I like peet's and sbux though, so Black Rock might appeal more to folks who like a milder roast or something. read more

I don't understand the hype of this place. If you're a true coffee drinker this place is not for you, If you enjoy corporate or big franchise coffee, it's the same. The staff is very nice and friendly, this is why they get 2 stars, but the coffee? No thank you. I ordered 2 breve's and they were made in about 30 seconds.... not ideal for me. It was bitter and it wasn't foamed well at all. I honestly went so I could determine if Boise got another great coffee place or if it was the same old drive thru experience you can get anywhere in the valley.
