Black Rock Bar & Grill's location in Canton might have been the first one in this state as it has been around for close to a decade now. It's across the street from IKEA which I always use as a landmark. I happened to be in town at the same time as some out-of-state friends so I chose this restaurant for our lunch because of its unique concept of cooking steak on a rock that has been heated up to 750+ degrees. We were the first party of the day as the restaurant was completely empty at 11:30. The menu was several pages long and had a potpourri of non-steak choices. Three of the middle pages described the concept of cooking steak on a 755°F volcanic stone along with the associated food offerings. A sirloin was available in three portion sizes. Other steak cuts were sold at 6 oz or 8 oz with or without the combination of another protein (e.g. coconut shrimp, kielbasa, ribs). Soup or salad and one side came with an order. I chose the Steak and Rib combo which consisted of a 6 oz serving of sirloin, half a slab of the house signature ribs, and my choices of clam chowder and mashed potatoes for the soup and side. The server brought over a cart that held the heated vessels. He demonstrated how to cook the meat and then placed a tray with a rock at my setting. I slathered the casino butter on the stone surface and then placed the sirloin to cook. The guidance for medium rare doneness was 15 to 25 seconds. The self-cooking and interaction with my fellow diners was what made this experience memorable. The clam chowder was the thinnest version I have tasted in a while. When I first looked at the cup, the broth reminded of me lemon chicken soup. The mashed potatoes were ordinary, and even the steak was plain with no seasoning added beforehand. There was salt and a cup of mayo-based sauce to flavor the meat. Since the kitchen did not have the task of cooking the sirloin, I thought the price should have been lower for a petite cut plus the ribs which didn't really stand out either. The service from the waiter was fine. What took long was the kitchen preparing the food even though we were their first customers. Maybe they had not pre-heated any stones until we had placed our order because I cannot think of why the other items would take that much time. This was my first time at Black Rock. I have been to other restaurants with a similar concept but It's a very unique concept nonetheless. Your main dish (meat or seafood) comes out along with a 750 degree "rock" which you use to cook to your liking. I ordered the steak and kielbasa. It comes with a fantastic herb butter which adds tons of flavor. With your entree you also get soup/ salad and a side. I ordered clam chowder and asparagus. I thought this place was great. They gave me an email address for gift card service said IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME! They said sometimes when you biyu them at a store other than Black Rock it happens. So I emailed 3 x never received an answer, called their main office and left a voicemail for everyone I could and no call back. CALLED AND SPOKE TO THE MANAGER AND SHE SAID EVEN THEY HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING A HOLD OF THE MAIN OFFICE. I like Black Rock's food and atmosphere, but it isn't a place to go for a quick lunch. The service is definitely a slower pace. When I arrived at lunchtime I wasn't sure that the restaurant was open. I walked in and didn't see anyone, no other diners and no employees. But soon a server came to the front of the restaurant and seated me at a booth. Very slow business for a Friday afternoon! I ordered a roadhouse burger, subbing an Impossible burger for the beef. It was very good. The Cajun fries were excellent. I really like the BBQ sauce they use on the burger. By the time I received my food there was only one other table of diners in the restaurant. It was very, very slow. I'm surprised that they are even open for lunch if they often have so little lunch business. My server was friendly but I had to wait a bit to be seated, wait to place my order, wait for food, wait for drinks, wait to pay. The desserts here are wonderful. But today I was dining by myself and didn't order a dessert as they are definitely sharable sized. read more

We came in on a Wednesday around 5pm not busy at all but also no one at the door greeting or seating people, Odd... We waited, then walked to the bar.. ghost town. Finally someone came from the kitchen and went and got a host. We came in for a steak and lobster special. It's not our first visit but we haven't not been here in a while. Things really seemed to have changed at this location. After getting our appetizers we noticed there is no silverware, no salt no pepper, no napkins, no straw for drink. Basic stuff you need. There used to be a sauce option for dipping but i guess that's gone because we weren't presented an option. restaurant was clean, no heavy smoke lingering and our server was nice. awful experience! I am writing this review as we leave my nephew's birthday dinner. It took 2 1/2 hours for our party of 7 to complete our time here. I even had to bus our own table after dinner. The waitress did not bus our table, yet came back with dessert plates as we ordered a birthday dessert for my nephew's bday. She then proceeded to ask us where we wanted the dessert plates and we asked the remove our dinner plates before placing the dessert plates on our table. She then placed the dessert plates on the bar and left. Finally, she came back with a tray to bus the tables where she made us hand her the plates. Poor management and the food was okay, but nothing to warrant the price point. Spend your money elsewhere and frequent another restaurant or location. Truly, one of the worst restaurant experiences we've ever had. There is a reason this location is so empty. read more

I would even stay on the the verge of being hot. Imagine a hot summer day you're sitting in the black rock. We were at the Canton location - the service was VERY slow and the restaurant was not very busy. Our person was lovely, friendly, and all, just very slow. I'm guessing they are under-staffed. The food was pretty good. We all had steak - it seems like there is no seasoning so the salt and pepper mills at the table were put to good use. The shrimp skewers came with a good dose of seasoning. The Mac n cheese as ok at best. The shrimp scampi had a strong garlic and pepper flavor - some liked it and some did not. Apparently this location is family owned and not the company owned locations as was explained when someone ordered the Creamed Corn and was told they've never had that at this location and that it shouldn't even be on the menu because they do not serve it. My friend and I had lunch here because she had a coupon for buy one sandwich get one free. We both ordered burgers. They were good but nothing special. The sweet potato fries with dipping sauce was tasty. The restaurant seemed dirty. The tables looked rugged - probably due to people grilling at them. Been here a few times to take advantage of deals from time to time. Father's Day and a couple of birthdays are always a great reason to come here. Had an amazing dinner and great conversation at this establishment. Came here after being refused to be seated at a different spot. The staff was inviting and welcoming from the moment we walked in the door until we left (last customers in the spot lol). Our servers were very attentive and treated us like we were regulars instead of visitors. It's a total experience. You have the option to cook your own dinner (mostly meat and seafood) on a rock or have it prepared in the kitchen! I recommend cooking your own food. Super cool for sure. Prices were very reasonable for the experience. Found out they have locations in several states. Anytime I'm in Michigan, I'll def be back and likely any other state as well. What is it about this location that's so much better than our Toledo Ohio location? Everything. From the moment u walk in the door u are greeted with smiles. Gave me a 10 min wait with pager on New Years. My pager buzzed with 1 minute of me sitting. My man was still parking. I told them a 5"8 cutie with gray beard. They showed him the way. Used my $10 gift card from my Toledo location. No problem. Had crab cakes. Chicken sandwich. My man cooked his steak on the hot ass stone. Had a good glass of wine. All was good. We called and they said no wait. We were seated right away and our server took our drink order and returned to answer our questions. Bubbling shrimp is amazing with buttered bread. I cut some of the mushrooms and asparagus and put it on the hot stone for a little grilled taste. It was nice to have hot shrimp through out the meal. The filet was cooked just the way hubby likes it since he did the cooking. Our server Yashay, stayed attentive throughout the meal. I will come again the next time we're here for business. read more

We had been craving Black Rock steak since it's delicious. We normally go to the Novi location or the Heartland location. A coupon came in the mail for a free volcano dessert, but only for the Canton location. Canton is a bit far, but the kids love the Rainforest Cafe volcano so we decided to try Canton. I had previously read the Canton reviews, but I was hoping they were wrong. They weren't! This location is atrocious!!! We arrived for lunch and only a few other customers were seated at tables. It took several minutes for them to bother noticing us to seat us. There were flies all over the restaurant and the tables had divots and chips on them. There seemed to be a lot of staff wandering, but no one to help us. I even spotted a staff member asleep in a booth. Another staff member was climbing on top of tables with his shoes on to clean a television and barely cleaned the table when he was done. A waiter finally helped us but he was prickly and abrasive bordering on just plain rude. He could not answer any questions about the food. He could not answer pricing of cocktails or details about beers, although it turned out that he was the bartender. We ordered a couple beers and they tasted off. It was then that he told us the taps were broken on that side and he didn't know when they would be fixed. He tried to sell us beer on the working side, but those didn't work either. The kids wanted frozen drinks but those were also broken. He had that " I don't know I just work here attitude", like we were the nuisance. We got water which he never refilled. I asked if anything else wasn't working, but he snapped, "well this is a restaurant so I assume things are workin!" This was a nightmare. He left us for ages before we could order. Then we waited for at least an hour before the food arrived to the point that we almost left. The two other tables seemed to have attentive waitstaff, but our server didn't seem to care! When we finally got our food it had been ages. The steak is great which is why the rating is a two and not a zero. I love their steak, sauce, and sides. The portions are nice for the price. $16.99 for a steak, huge baked potato, and macaroni and cheese, not bad! We had boxes to take home for later. We got our dessert. Not at good as rainforest cafe but still good, tons of ice cream and brownie bigger than a family can finish. The normal price is $11.99 which is good considering smaller desserts can cost close to that. Oddly though the plates were also all broken with chips in them like the table. I would think they wouldn't serve us with broken bits. When we got our bill we were charged for the beers, and the prices for the beers were outrageous. After waiting and waiting the server took them off, but it was like he was hoping we didn't notice a huge charge for something we didn't consume. In the end we were here over two hours for a simple quick lunch. It wasn't even like they were cooking the steaks since we get them raw! Never again! I won't be back to this location. The bad reviews were accurate in my experience. So sad! We will definitely go back to the Novi location which is usually crowded, but festive and well managed. read more

When there for my son's birthday. They were out of ribs and couldn't make Asian stir fry!!! They don't have food on menus stay away!!!!

Went to this location on Valentine's Day to partake from a nice 3 course deal. Everything went wrong as soon as we were seated. We were placed in a patio area that was not heated very well, but we could live with it. Once the service started, everything got worse. It took quite awhile until my wife got the Pepsi she ordered. The appetizer came out not long after, which was the pretzel bites which were decent. Next came the soup and salad. My wife got a Caesar salad which had a hair in it and my clam chowder was very runny. We soldiered on, however. The steaks were brought out and the rocks they were cooking on were not as hot as usual. My wife had a sirloin which was really fatty and tough to cook and the bake potato was like a rock. She couldn't even get her fork in it. When my alerted our server about the steak and baked potato he took it away and came back with a bill that was more than the deal that we asked for! We had to ask for a manager because there was no way we were paying more than the deal for unsatisfactory food. The service was slow and the food was bad.
