Black River Roasters is one of my long-time favorites. Their seasonal drinks are always so good. I especially love the iced maple latte. There's plenty of indoor seating, and the outdoor seating area is spacious and really elevates the whole atmosphere in the warm weather. The baristas are consistently kind, quick, and talented, and the drinks come out perfect every single time. I'm a huge local coffee shop fan, and not every shop nails consistency, but Black River Roasters has gotten it right without fail since the day they opened. Passing through Whitehouse Station and in search of coffee brought me to Black River Roasters, and it definitely was a pleasant surprise! First impressions: wow, this place is huge for a coffee shop. Black River roasts their own coffee beans in house, which is always nice and means you're getting some high quality caffeine. Seasonal flavors included pumpkin, bourbon maple, and apple cinnamon -- so you already know you're getting quality, since these aren't flavors you can get just anywhere. I loved the signage depicting staff favorite drink mixes as it adds a fun touch to the menu! Coffee was great, my only complaint is that with syrups the drink can get way too sweet (especially since I typically drink unsweetened coffee.) Truly impressed! They do their own roasting in house so that's a plus. The barista made my PSL perfectly! I asked for it to be less sweet and decaf and it tasted GREAT! I wish all places could make PSL this good! I got a Morning Glory muffin which I've never heard of but she told me it gave carrot cake vibes and she couldn't be more spot on! It was exactly that but with sultanas. I'm not a fan of those so I dug them out. It was still good nonetheless. I visit BRR about once a week and it's always a pleasant experience. Upon entering, there's a chalkboard of drinks to choose from if you're like me and have anxiety trying to figure out what the heck to order at a shop. With fun names like Cookie Monster, Veruca Salt, etc. there's plenty to choose from, and they can all be customized. Their coffee base is excellent, and I've never had a drink I didn't like. There's also a lounge area on the second level with seating options if you feel like enjoying your drink at the shop. Even when it's busy, the service is usually quite speedy, so BRR is also a great pick for to-go options. read more

I have a lot of worries these days and have found that doing simple things like making coffee and listening to lo-fi helps me settle down in the morning. I have a great Stanley pourover set I got for my camping trips that I also like to use at home. The patience of boiling water and then doing the pour over a few times is the calmest 15-20 minutes of my day. Lately I've really enjoyed grinding my own beans so when I ran out of some I had gotten on a recent trip, I went in search of the best beans in NJ. Black River came up near my area and I was really psyched by their online selection. I ended up getting a bag from Papua New Guinea that has toffee, nut, and cherry notes. I've decided I like it best with some ground cardamom as well. Just shy of $20 for the bag. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned. On my last visit here I got a tumeric latte and very tasty biscotte. Both were delicious and the perfect mid day treat I needed after way too much coffee that morning. I also got an herbal tea after while I was just getting some work done and needed to stay warm. The place is new to the Whitehouse scene and very welcomed. They are great for grabbing on the go, but they also have a very cozy lounge that is perfect for getting work done (strong wifi) or sitting and relaxing on your own or with a friend. I have been wanting to come here for quite a bit after seeing someone I follow post about them on Instagram. The inside is really nice and they have this lounge area to sit down. I felt that the coffee was underwhelming however. I got a large latte with oat milk which tasted good however the small latte with almond milk did not taste like a latte. It was super foamy and the espresso was weak. We bought a bag of beans and that was good. Nothing to complain and recommended. read more

Let me start off by saying I have been coming as a regular since they opened their doors. They were fantastic! I was coming every day (weekdays) and even sometimes on weekends. They took the time to make me a unique tasty drink every-day and I always appreciated that. Around 2021 though a lot of their friendly staff and managers started leaving and the dynamic changed. The quality was not the same since then, drinks, service, customer service, atmosphere, etc. customer service barely says hello now. it's a shame, I loved this place, but I have stopped going because it's just not worth the money anymore. read more

Love this place! It's right on the highway and there's plenty of parking in the private parking lot. The inside has an industrial yet rustic look. There's a more comfortable seating area upstairs. The staff helped me decide what might be a good option to try without any creamer in it. They steered me to the nitro cold brew which is something I've never had before. It was delicious. The nitrogen gave the coffee a thick, almost syrupy consistency to the coffee. Didn't miss the creamer at all. My 10 year old had the Chai Tea Latte. It was the perfect level of sweetness but a little too light. They have some other interesting add-ins, such as lavender & honey, and a variety of alternative creamer options. Passed by this place on the way back from a hiking trip. We were hungry so we ordered a drink each and a scone. I had the mango ice tea, which was very refreshing. The butter pecan scone was so good. It had crunchy edges and fluffy inside with week balanced sugar. The pecan was a little soft, which was hoping to be crunchy. Unfortunately, we weren't able to eat indoor. I have been driving past Black River for a very long time. Keep saying to myself, skip Dunkin and stop in. How are small businesses to survive when people like me drive past and go to Dunkin and various convenience stores for their java fix? I finally stopped in the other day. An excellent cup of coffee. A "large" was really medium and fifty cents more than what I pay for a medium up the road. But, like I said, it was excellent and worth the price. See you next time. read more

Nice spot as on certain Thursdays they have the lobster truck so you can grab a great cup of coffee and some lobstah'. I ordered an almond milk latte and a gluten free vegan berry scone. So I'm a basic b and I only order lattes when I see on yelp or ig that the cafe does latte art. I just like the visual experience. But even though online they have it, I didn't get one in my cup. The latte itself was smooth and I think that might have been the best vegan gluten free scone yet. I didn't even notice it was vegan. Great coffee, but went in to study and do school work in the lounge area (which was super cute) but had to leave. The female worker in the 'beans area' (she was wearing a woven dress) was screaming gossiping across the room to the coworker. Even with noise canceling headphones on, it was too loud. Extremely rude, and not relaxing at all with her screaming and cackling. Me and 2 other guests were talking about it complaining. Complained to the front barista (male) as I walked out and all the worker had to say was "i'm sorry". A very pleasant stop if you're in the area - it's mainly a roastery but they have a full menu for purchasing drinks as well. Their espresso is perfect - not too strong but quite flavorful. I stop in about once a week for a couple fresh brewed coffees and recently purchased a pound for home. The coffees here are top notch. You can order online or in store. They have all the sorts of specialty drinks of the national chains, including pour overs, but the coffee here is of superior quality and taste. We got Pumpkin mocha latte wiht cinnamon and Buterfly Pea tea with matcha oat foam which was something very unique and unexpected blend of flavors that included lemongrass. They are super accommodating to my ever changing coffee needs, always have a super friendly staff, and their coffee is by far the best tasting coffee in the area. Get: Latte, Espressos...every cup of coffee I've had here is wonderful and get a scone while you're at it. I love Black River Roasters. You can tell that the baristas here really know their stuff and I have yet to have a bad or mediocre cup of coffee, everything has been stellar! Everyone here is also super friendly. I took a palate development class here that was two hours. I thought that that class would have been wayyy too long but when I was actually in the workshop, the time flew by. I learned so much and the instructors made it really fun! They were coffee geeks which I loved and they totally owned it. I can't wait to come back to take another coffee class or tasting. The 5 star review is really because I love coming here to study. I walk in, get a latte and a scone and then head to the upstairs seating area. The upstairs feels like home. The sunlight comes through the window. I am able to get an awesome insta shot with the natural light of the latte on the wooden tables and then I get to work. I travel a lot for work and love exploring new cafes in different cities. There are a lot of times that I wish a café was relocated to my city so that I could come everyday. I'm happy to have found Black River Roasters because they have everything that I usually look for in a café and they are only 20 minutes from my house!
