I love this place so much. First time my bf took me here for my birthday and the service and food was pretty great. During the fall they serve this delicious pumpkin bread as part of the bread basket and it was so good i ordered a loaf to bring into the office. Bartender (Walt) sucker-punched a patron of the restaurant in the parking lot. The owners would take no responsibility or action towards their employee saying he was "off the clock" and instead referred to a police report where only this bartender, his girlfriend and a friend were "witnesses" to the incident. The young man who was struck (my son) lost a tooth and and these people are less than concerned. Was uncertain about going here as I had a pretty lousy meal the last time I went here with my girlfriend. But we wanted to eat outside on a nice night so we reluctantly decided to give it another shot. So we arrived and approached the host area and waited for 15 minutes with only one person saying that someone would be with us shortly. That was the only human interaction we actually got from the employees who didn't even seem to be bothered that we were there. The only difficult thing about this place is getting to it- it's sort of in the middle of an entrance ramp going from Sussex Turnpike to Route 10 West and it's not easy to see from the highway. But make sure you find it- it'll be worth your trip. We sat in the large back room right near a window, so we had a beautiful view of the small lake that the restaurant sits on. My family, girlfriend, and I shared a couple appetizers- the calamari was crispy and flavorful (I am a self-proclaimed calamari afficionado), but the star was the brie that my girlfriend and I shared. The brie was crusted in almonds and served with crackers, fruit, and a strawberry sauce. The brie was soft and creamy and the almonds provided a wonderful nutty, crunchy contrast. It was delicious on everything. Had I wanted to eat the plate it was served on, it would have been delicious with the brie on it. My entree was a New Orleans-style pizza with andouille, blackened chicken, and jack cheese. It was very good, very large, and good the next day (cold!). read more

I love this place. I love the open atmosphere and the fireplace. The only think I have ever head here that I disliked was the Shrimp FraDiavlo....very salty. I LOVE the Salmon Club. I crave it!!!! The Sweet potato Fries are the best!!!! I especially love the staff. I have a son with low functioning autism. They always make us feel welcome and wanted!! They do not have booths, which is sometimes difficult with my son. He needs to be "trapped " in!!! They always rush our food out. I have never had a problem with him there. This place is so over rated! Have been here several times. The menu is a great read and makes all items sound delicious. Then you order and results are a disappointment. The last straw was this past holiday season which I attended a group buffet holiday party. The food was a disaster. Everyone was disappointed and complained. I think the problem is the owners have worn themselves thin. They own various establishments. Instead of perfecting the food at one or two restaurants they cheapen the food and cooks to pay off the building of their new resturants. Stopped in after an engagement party (where I had 0 drinks) in my hometown to see if there were any familiar faces. My friend and I each had a drink and they ran my card for shots that we didn't have. How do I know this? I called when I saw the charge and they read to me the itemized receipt. Their explanation? Assuming I was blacked out drunk and didn't remember them. They didn't even offer to refund a difference, etc. My advice is to not go, but bring cash if you must. read more

So I had a night off and it was time for dinner. The wife and I decided to head out and "meat "another couple at a local joint called the Black River Barn. They have indoor and outdoor seating as well as a massive menu, a good selection of beers on tap and most importantly, burgers. Even though Burger Mayhem is mostly about burgers, it's also about hangin' out. I had to explain to my wife that it was unacceptable to talk about anything but hot chicks, fantasy football, music and movies with explosions. After a lengthy eye roll and a nod (that means "you're a frickin idiot), she agreed. We talked about football as we looked through the menu. I ordered a pint of cold Blue Moon in a room temp glass. I love Blue Moon! As for the glass, I truly feel beer should not be served ice cold unless you're doing something outdoors that requires a "coolant". As always, I must repeat my request of a "non chilled" glass to the waitress. I swear every time I'm just asking for a "dirty stir" in my beer. As I scan through the selection of ground beef, one in particular caught my eye. This time the Barn was on notice and there was no doubt, I was having "the Bistro Burger". An Angus burger topped with roasted peppers, Vidalia onions, bacon, brie cheese and garlic dijonnaise on a Tuscany roll. Obviously this was an upscale burger. I couldn't resist the bacon/garlic/brie combo. It was definitely a "fancy" choice, so for the night I would apparently be a "fancy man". My buddy rocked a duck burger off the specials. I struggle with the argument on whether this is truly a "burger" or not. To me, if it's not ground meat it's a patty, but for the sake of the review I will give it mention. Both of us were fascinated for two reasons. One, what the hell does a duck burger taste like? And two, since the establishment is located on a river with a heavy duck population, we assumed this would be the freshest duck ever eaten! Then again, this could be Jersey river duck. Taste: The burger was great! A little overcooked, but excusable. This was no doubt a result of sitting in the window too long. It had a great combination of rich creamy taste from the brie and a nice bite from the garlic. And as always the perfect compliment... Bacon! The only issue I really had with it was the bun. It was a bit tough and way too "bready". With everything going on with the ingredients I would have liked soft bread. It added a "dry" taste to the burger and made the mouth work to eat it. Value: The value was fantastic! At $8.99 with all those premium ingredients you can't go wrong. The beers were a great price too! Looks: No frill but clean and well presented. Sides: This unfortunately is what brings the score down. The burger came with soggy fries that were as limp as an 80-year-old man. I was quite disappointed because as you know (or will soon), I am a HUGE fan of fries. Very disappointing. The Joint: The place is awesome!! The outdoor seating in the summer is great. The bar inside is set up perfect. It's a full circle with TV's all around. I highly recommend going there for a sporting event or to spend the day watching football. If you play fantasy football they have plenty of games on and beer specials. They also have all sorts of live entertainment if you're looking for that. The dining room has the typical restaurant feel you'd expect but again there is lots of room. If you're in Randolph/Roxbury NJ area I highly recommend going there for a night. As for my bro with the duck burger lets just say though it was a valiant culinary effort, he'll be switching back to meat. read more

Wow, what a bad meal. I ordered the spinach and cheese ravioli (not the exact menu name). When it arrived, the sauce was barely warm. No steam was rising from the plate. I looked at the ravioli, and the color of the dough just didn't seem right. I hesitantly cut into the ravioli, and was only able to cut into the center, as the ravioli dough was still raw and hard where it was crimped together. For some reason I tasted it. The dough was crunchy and the cheese in the middle was not melted. For fun I checked another one and found the same thing. They also forget the shaved cheese that was supposed to be on the top. I immediately grabbed the server, and told him that it was severely under cooked. He sent it back, and i figured I would be watching everyone else at my table eat while they refired it. I was wrong. Not two minutes later, my food was back. This time it was steaming hot, and the shaved cheese was now there. So was the under cooked ravioli. The plate had a skid mark from where they transferred it to the new plate after what I can only assume was microwaving the meal in the original plate. I even found the half eaten ravioli still on the plate. I flagged down the server again, explained the situation, sent it back and ordered something else. I was then able to watch the rest of my table eat in an uncomfortable silence. The second meal I ordered was not expedited, and then in return, my table got to watch me eat in an uncomfortable silence. When asked, the rest of the meals at the table were described to me as "ok". Other than the server, who really didn't care, no one came to the table to apologize for the error. My feet will not cross the doorway of this restaurant again, and I will not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I don't usually write reviews for restaurants but the experience I had when I visited the barn was just amazing I had the best service and the atmosphere of the Resturant just felt conftorable and felt welcoming besides the bar tender being so friends the whole staff made you feel welcomed the food was out at a reasonable time and drinks were just the best of the best .. I will most deffenitley be visiting the barn again with my husband and bringing friends next time as well 100% a 5 star place! read more

Possibly some of the worst entrees I have ever eaten...but I will say over the past few months the bar food (apps, wings, etc) have really stepped up. The bar area is great fun for drinking, apps and live music. Just don't go for a sit-down dinner or the breakfast buffets. Side review...the bathrooms in this place ARE REPULSIVE. 3 out of the 4 toilets in the women's room were clogged and overflowing with no toilet paper. The men's room was equally filthy. The Barn as its commonly referred to by the locals is your standard run of the mill barn. The outdoor seating is very nice however the service feels a little bit slower. The food is average, neither excellent or terrible. They have a large variety of items like you would find at a diner. The prices of drinks aren't terrible here, especially during Happy Hour. At night, there can be some interesting characters around the bar, which you will undoubtedly run into because the bar takes up the whole room and there little room to walk around it once you have the seats at the bar and on the walls occupied. I'm a huge fan of the bbq ribs here I order them every single time I have the opportunity to have dinner at the River Barn. The inside dining room is very cozy but if you find a table outside on a sunny day it overlooks the pond so its great to have a few cocktails and relax. This place used to be good. Not anymore. Today was for sure the last time I'll waste money at this restaurant. I ordered off the "winter 2015 specials' menu, or something similar. A PIZZA (not flatbread - PIZZA) with blue cheese, red onions, arugula, roasted peppers and steak. What came out was cooked pizza dough (no sauce, no cheese), spinach or lettuce, many, many HUGE chunks of red onion (I'm a huge red onion fan - but LARGE CHUNKS are gross), 'cheese' that had an aftertaste of blue cheese but was like no blue cheese I've ever eaten and each slice has a small piece of steak with grizzle. For this monstrosity, I got to pay $19.99. It was disgusting and clearly the folks in the kitchen have no clue what they're doing. And no pride in their jobs. Server was a moron, agreed with me that it wasn't arugula on my "pizza" but didn't offer compensation. Plus his work ethic is severely lacking. Skip this place - I think there's a McDonald's down the street. I'm sure you'll enjoy it more. read more

We went there this weekend. There was an issue with one of the dishes, and they handled it so well that it made up for the problem. The owner couldn't have done more for us to make it right. He made sure we left happy. He brought a hand made sea food salad, free desert and a fresh fruit salad. While errors may happen anywhere, it's how they make up for it that shows a true professional, and that what they are. Also, the food was great, the service very attentive and friendly. The Barn has really fallen over the years as the owners shifted their focus to opening other restaurants. The barmaids act annoyed to take your money- unless you are a fixture there. Menu is way too big and nothing stands out anymore. Most food is from Sysco. If you must go to a Barn do yourself a favor and go to their other one in Rockaway- at least they are friendlier. Nothing quite like sitting by the lake in Randolph drinking $6. beer out of a fake plastic mug eating cold soggy pizza delivered from an exhausted waitress. Dinner yesterday 430 on a Friday. The restaurant filled up fast. The food was good, not great. The atmosphere is beautiful, rustic with a fire going in the wood burning fire place. Unfortunately, the service was very poor. The wait staff (interestingly all male,?) could be seen standing and chatting in groups by a door possibly the kitchen. There was no return to our table to ask how the meal was after it was brought out, no offer to refill drinks. We had to alert the staff for requests a bar refill, for dessert, and the bill. I can relate if they were busy, but again there were many staff persons standing chatting. read more

Three words. Pulled pork nachos. The Barn is one of my favorite places to go and with all the dining that's around NJ, my bf and I still find ourselves ending up at the Barn more often than not. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious and plentiful, and the beer isn't so bad either. Even on their busiest nights you won't wait that long for a table or service. I had a surprise birthday party for my mother here this past Saturday night. It was 25 people and we chose to do the "cocktail party" option that The Barn offered. I have to say.... it was great!!!!! They kept the food replenished and everything was tasty! There was the perfect amount or room in our little section by the bar area. What really made this party over the top was our server. We had a server named Daniel. This guy was good! Totally on top of it. Our party had the drinks flowing so they kept him on his toes but at no time did it seem to fluster him (and he had regular tables to wait on on top of it). All 25 people raved about his service. I would absolutely do another cocktail style party here and I would absolutely request Daniel again. Amazing service, great good and a good time! read more

I've been here a few times over the years. Its great for beers, watching a game and greasy food options, but lacks any really good food. Last night was our first time eating at "The Barn" and we're happy to say we're a fan. The menu was pretty extensive with a lot of traditional dishes that had a twist to them. We ordered the mussels as an app which the hot sauce which wasn't hot at all but the mussels were very clean and fresh and the sauce was pretty tasty and loaded with garlic. Then for dinner I had the country pizza which was a regular size pizza (8 slices) thin crust with peppers, onions, sausage and potatoes. It was very good just needed to be a little hotter I recommend the Blue Point lager. Shannon our waitress was friendly and was quick and was attentive to our table. Our family goes to the barns brunch at least once a month. Although it is more of a bar atmosphere and less of a family restaurant their food is very good. They are always bringing out fresh food for the brunch and they have a omelette bar and carving stations which is great to see. read more
