There was a diffuser making event at the Briscoe River Oaks. The reviews I see online are outstanding, so hopefully this was just a fluke. Literally there was one employee to run this entire event from Black Phlox. We were not greeted at all. The AT&T vendor was also present did and that person went and got us the little form that you're supposed to fill out while you're making your diffuser. There were times slots you had to sign up for. This was not regulated or enforced if you will. People took our spots and mind you our slot was 630 so you know we could've gone to dinner or done something else. I just feel the whole thing was a waste of my time. We ended up leaving because literally there was no greeting, no interaction, no direction and no spot available despite our reservations big disappointment. :( Sorry about the blurry picture, but there was literally nothing to take pictures of. read more

Black Phlox Candle - Event Activity - Candle Stores Near Me - Houston, Texas

Dr. Rica, Missy, and Tasha are a dynamic trio for an immersive perfume-making experience. This was my second time visiting Black Phlox, where I learned that "phlox" is a type of flower, and I'm so glad I returned. The level of attention, detail, and guidance throughout the two-hour session is truly unmatched. My table included six women celebrating a "Spring Into Friendship" social event. Together, we were able to try 72 different scents across top, middle, and base notes to create something unique and complementary to our natural body chemistry. I loved the clear instructions, the pacing of the session, and the R&B playlist that felt like a sweet throwback to my aunt's playlist she used to blast on her living room stereo set in the '90s. One of the things I love about Black Phlox is that every visit is guaranteed to feel new. Each table is given a different curated set of scents to work from, so no two experiences are exactly alike. Dr. Rica even pulled out a few special "vault" scents during our session that included deeper, more intense fragrances that are used sparingly, but added richness and character to the final blends. The interaction with Missy, Tasha, and Dr. Rica made the experience feel intimate and fun, like I was hanging out with my cool, older cousins. Not once did I feel rushed. Even when I had a little hiccup while pouring my scent into the bottle, Tasha and Missy jumped in to help me correct it so I could leave completely satisfied with what I'd created. The pricing was more than fair. You have the option to upsize your bottle, and they even offer 50% off if you return and remake the same scent, which is something I've never seen offered in other custom scent classes. The value, the experience, and the meaningful interaction make this a go-to recommendation for me. The icing on the cake is that you get to bring your own bottle of wine and/or alcohol for just a $2 cork fee. They provide cups and ice, and the space is filled with good conversation, plenty of cackles lol, and community energy you won't find anywhere else. After our session ended, we spent at least another hour laughing, taking pictures, and finishing our prosecco. Not once did we feel hurried or unwelcome. That kind of hospitality is rare and speaks volumes. I also learned that Black Phlox offers interactive perfume and cologne-making stations for events like weddings. We had two brides-to-be in our group, and they were thoughtfully gifted in-house made candle wax melts along with their custom perfume purchases, which was a beautiful and personal touch that made the night even more special. It's a beautiful space built by even more beautiful women, and I love hearing their stories and seeing how they've turned inspiration into a thriving business. I'm proud to support Black Phlox and will keep returning again and again. read more

Smells Like Team Spirit!: A Whiff-tastic Adventure with Rica As you know, I take my reviews very seriously, and as such, I would like to share with you my thoughts on a recent experience at Black Phlox. Our experience at the perfumery today was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we stepped into the beautifully curated shop, we were greeted by a sensory feast. The smiling faces of Rica and her assistant Tasha immediately set a welcoming tone, creating an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality. The aromatic symphony inside the store was striking--some scents were subtle and delicate, others bold and robust, and a few sharp and distinctive. The combination created a sensory whirlwind that was both exhilarating and immersive. Rica greeted us warmly and guided us to the table where we joined fellow participants, a delightful family visiting Texas from out of state. Their enthusiasm added a communal charm to the experience, and it was lovely to share the process with others equally invested in crafting their own signature scents. 1: The session began with an engaging overview of the art of perfumery. Rica walked us through the structure of fragrances, explaining the interactions of base, heart, and head notes that together create a balanced and captivating scent. This introduction provided an invaluable foundation for the creative process that followed. 2: For the next 45 minutes, we delved into the hands-on portion of the experience, exploring countless bottles of fragrances. It was an intricate and methodical process: sniffing, wafting, and discerning the subtle differences between sweet, earthy, citrusy, and floral notes. Each bottle seemed to tell its own story, ranging from dark and mysterious to bright and playful. After much deliberation and a fair share of olfactory overload, I crafted a blend I was immensely proud of--subtle Vetiver and Negroni, layered with hints of patchouli, spiced cardamom, and grapefruit, grounded by a base of deep forest moss. 3: My partner, Caroline, chose a more refined and understated path, blending a Parisian cherry blossom note with the elegance of lily of the Nile. Though I couldn't quite identify all the components of her creation, I can confidently say it was both enchanting and uniquely hers. Rica's humor and charm elevated the experience even further. Her delightful personality and nurturing guidance made the entire process feel effortless and enjoyable. She ensured we left not only with our customized perfumes in hand but also with memories that will linger far longer than the scents themselves. In the end, the experience was much more than a lesson in perfumery--it was a masterclass in creativity, connection, and self-expression. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience to anyone seeking a unique and meaningful activity. Rica and her team embody passion and kindness, making their shop a must-visit destination for anyone in the area. 5/5 A true delight. read more

I meant to write this earlier but forgot. A few months back, my team had an afternoon team-building event at Black Phlox, and we had a great time. Everyone totally got into finding the right fragrances (and mixes of fragrances) for their candle, and we learned a lot about the process. The owner was so fun and helpful, and we all loved her energy and the story behind the business. We had wine, listened to tunes and bought a lot of candles. I'm burning one now as I write this and have plans to return to buy more when I'm in Montrose again. In short, try them out, make a candle for yourself or for a loved one. Spread some joy and support a women-owned business. read more
