My mom and I just stopped in today and were super disappointed because we had read so many wonderful things about Black Owl! Both of the coffees we ordered tasted like the espresso was incredibly burnt, not sure if the shots sat for too long or what, but I ended up dumping mine out because it was so bitter :( if we weren't just passing thru on our way to Boise, we would have gone back and asked them to remake them for us. This is the place for your super food sensitive customer, and the prices might suggest a step above the rest. I ordered the CCR and literally pooped my pants shortly thereafter: not sure if that is a good or bad thing. The caprese pananni was a bit of a letdown because it didn't have any fresh tomatoes or basil, and honestly it was way too cheesy and soggy from the sauces making for a overly rich lunch. My husband had the breakfast burrito and was satisfied with the portion size, quality of ingredients and the super creative jalapeño sour cream. The best scrambled eggs/biscuits and gravy I've ever had. Their pumpkin seed pesto is fantastic and the eggs are clearly right from farm to table. Owners/employees were very helpful and personable. The coffee is great here and it's a local favorite. You always run into people you know and it's good service and very good coffee drinks. Much better than the other local coffee house in my opinion. The food needs some help however. I got the breakfast burrito once and a panini once and haven't ordered food again. They were so filled with cheap melted cheese that they were greasy and unpalatable. I love cheese but it was way way too much. For the price and the high quality of the coffee, I am super disappointed in the food. I got a baked scone once that was unmemorable. But I will continue to drink the heck out of their coffee and enjoy the neighborhood vibe. I hope they improve the food offerings someday. read more

Worst ever Biscuit & Gravy with added sausage and egg. It was a take-out order. The menu board Posted Fresh & Home Made.... My first thought was to call the owner, and alert her to what was being served. Instead of listening, then putting me on hold to check out what was being said; She spoke over me repeating that her eggs were farm fresh and that the meal was home made. I was calm and honestly descriptive. I suggested that that home-made may be true, but that it could very well have been made days earlier. Instead of checking, She argued and defended, so am I liar? My complaint could be easily verified. All I wanted her to do was listen, and check the kitchen, I didn't want anything; just to be heard. I was given an old stale and re-fried biscuit with burn marks. It was covered with flavorless pasty gravy goo. The added sausage was burnt and had old grill bits. The egg was awful. All I asked was that she check on the kitchen to verify instead of a bad review. Instead of listening, she spent her time defending. I repeated my reason for calling, which was so she could take a look in the kitchen. She then offered to buy me a cup of coffee on my next visit. My tossed breakfast with coffee and a tip was $15. We all have bad days, I would not have written this review if the owner had taken the time to put me on hold, and check the kitchen, 3 feet away from the phone..... read more

I've been here once and I'll definitely make it a point to come again. They have great ambiance. They also have a great back room that is kid and baby friendly with toys and a chalk talk (and a closable door in case it gets too loud). Their coffee was tasty. I usually have stomach troubles with coffee and their beans tasted perfect. Their banana bread was also super moist and delicious. My picky daughter even enjoyed it. I started coming here the day they opened, and I keep coming back! In the old Zaney's location, Black Owl have completely remodeled the building, and it looks great! But let's get to the important part: the drinks and food. Black Owl has three signature coffee drinks, and I've tried two so far: the CCR (Coconut Caramel Revolution), and the Dark Chocolate Cherry Mocha. No fake syrups here: the coconut whipped cream, caramel sauce, and cherry sauce are made from scratch in house! Both drinks are amazing, and my favorite so far is the CCR! They also have a White Chocolate Raspberry mocha with yes, fresh made real raspberry sauce. It will be the next drink I try! I've also had several of the food items they offer: Caprese sandwich, grilled cheese, potato/egg/cheese breakfast burrito. My kids have had some of the baked goods. Everything is made there and delicious! The owner is proud of his new place, and it shows, with the quality of ingredients, his passion in his products, and the customer service! I'm sad to be leaving our vacation house here in Hailey next week, as it means no BOC. We will be back this winter, and it will be my first stop when I land! If you haven't gone yet, go now! Their signature is a Brown Sugar Mocha which seems to be a hit. Great atmosphere, guitars allaying around for people to play at will and truly just hang out. Awesome meeting spot, staff is beyond friendly and interactive. Really know the local community and could tell they are invested knowing their regulars by name. The mixture of roasted and seasoned potatos, crispy bacon, melted sharp cheddar with egg all combine together to make a delicious breakfast.
