I'd just done a training run that began and ended at the shoe store across the street. At the conclusion, I was given a Paloma-flavored non-alcoholic beer, courtesy of one of my running group's sponsors, but what was I supposed to do with that? It was decided that we needed coffee. (How ironic, by the way. Receiving a free beer from your sponsor.) We seem to have gotten there just in time. There was already a healthy crowd of people who apparently weren't runners, based on their physique (lol jk), and several people from our running group arrived after we did. People apparently like this place. The vibe is quirky and independent, with a lot of random decor, including a Blues Brothers poster and a sign declaring that the Teletubbies are welcome, and a lot of local-interest signage and artwork. People in the City love to remind themselves that they're in St. Louis. You never see anything like that in my native West County. Truth be told, I wouldn't even go into a coffee shop unless someone else suggested it. It costs less at QT. But I figured when in Rome. I wasn't about to get a sandwich, in part because I wasn't hungry, and in part because I'm always wary of food from places that specialize in coffee, but I figured I'd try one of their fancy coffee drinks instead of just a regular coffee. I went with something called a Zippity Do Da, or something to that effect. It was a latte, served hot or cold (I of course went with hot), with... if I'm not mistaken, peanut butter, honey and mocha. I liked the idea that there was a peanut butter element, in part because I couldn't imagine what that would be like. Peanut butter, even the welfare version you get at Aldi, is at least somewhat viscous. Was this going to be more like a milkshake? That could be gross, and grossly caloric, canceling out any benefit of my training run. Of course I was going to drink it anyway. Turns out that the peanut butter was the element that was least prominent in the overall taste of this drink, though you could in fact taste it. I found it impressive that, if you concentrated hard enough, you could detect elements of peanut butter, honey and mocha. It's like when you purchase a fancy bottle of wine, from, perhaps, the aforementioned Aldi, and you really can taste bits of oak, vanilla, campfire and a slight nuttiness. No Diddy. These people are true coffee artists, the cafe equivalent of people who work at Subway. I'm at the nearby shoe store every once in a while, so maybe I'll return. I might even cop a bagel.

It's located on a busy street in Clayton, so people watching is available. Being used to ordering at Starbucks, I was uncertain how to approach this, so I told the employee I was trying to adjust and he was so kind and helpful. I went with a Hot Macchiato with Caramel and Mocha, 2% Milk and a small Chicken Empanada. They were a bit backed up, so the wait was a little longer than I expected, but the drink was very good. I didn't even have to specify how many pumps of what to put in there, they just did it and it was perfect. The right temperature, I didn't have to wait to drink it. The empanada was piping hot, so I had to let it cool and unfortunately couldn't try it before my appt. Next time tho.

Eventually, I'd run out of money and be forced to live out of doors, perhaps in a tent in the park across the street. It would almost be worth it. Kentzo Koffee is not without its flaws, but it's a good place to have a coffee ("koffee") and a light breakfast. It's not clear to me how long it's been around, but it's possible they have a few issues that just need ironing out. A guy from my running group who lives nearby was running down the litany of businesses that have been in this space. Is this location cursed? Was a Native American killed there? This is no fault of Kentzo, but there was some confusion as to whether the breakfast bowl comes with eggs. I could have sworn that it doesn't and that the menu made this clear, but a few members of my group, who are girls with whom I'm not inclined to outwardly disagree, insisted that it does. It seems like it should anyway, right? What's a breakfast bowl without eggs? You could just as easily have such a bowl for lunch. That's unacceptable. This place had umpteen baristas, including one dressed like she was working for tips in a place frequented by bikers (she looked amazing), but they were barely keeping up with orders. This was fine with me. I didn't have anywhere to be, and my drink--an iced vanilla latte, natch--was good when it finally came out. But this is not the kind of place to stop and grab a quick drink on your way to work. There was only one guy making food, as far as I can tell, and he was on it. He made my Breakfast Bowl w/ Bacon and brought it out before I got my drink. He warned me that the bowl was hot, but he was holding it with his bare hand. He must think that I'm actually *from* Maplewood. I had to have the girl who handed me my drink fetch my cinnamon roll. Were they supposed to hand it to me when I ordered? Were they hoping I'd just forget? The cinnamon roll was cold, like maybe it sat in a refrigerator overnight. It occurred to me that it almost certainly wasn't made that day, but it didn't seem particularly stale or prepackaged. It cost more than I paid for most meals in the pre-Brandon era, and it occurred to me that they could just give you a bit less, not charge as much, and I'd be fine with that. Did I devour the whole thing in a few bites anyway, like I just got out of jail? Yes. Yes, I did.

They might want to consider branching out into that field, in case someone pulls up wanting to purchase a ficus or whatever, so that they don't have to turn anyone away. It could help boost revenue, so that they're not having to constantly raise prices, like at McDonald's. There's a list of things this place carries on the building's facade, suggesting to me that this is a known issue. It's also announced that all are welcome, which came as a relief to me, since I'm never quite sure. I wonder if there was an incident, or if there's another place nearby that's known to turn people away. There's a nice little area where you can sit at some picnic tables set up in the parking lot, like you're on a smoking break at your old warehouse job, but the air was weirdly swampy, possibly due to "corn sweats," and we'd just gone on a run, so we decided to eat inside. The group that I'm in is on a sort of breakfast burrito tour, so I already knew what I was going to get, though I was curious about several menu items featuring weird-looking boiled eggs, that I saw photos of here on Yelp. What in the world? They look like they were thought up by an eccentric gentleman of a certain age who still collects VHS tapes, for personal reasons. You could imagine Gene Hackman's character in the movie The Conversation eating such a sandwich. I briefly toyed with the idea of ordering one of those sandwiches, for the lulz, and now I kinda wish that I did. I prefer a breakfast sandwich to a breakfast burrito anyway, and the breakfast burrito here is just okay. It's neither very bad nor very good. I liked the sheer size of it and the simplicity of it. There's only a small handful of ingredients: eggs; your choice of bacon or some non-meat option (so just bacon); some sort of melty cheese, possibly cheddar; roasted red peppers and that might be it. I don't know that the peppers added much. I'd sub them out for something more interesting, like a salsa, a sour cream or a guacamole, maybe something with more of a temperature or textural contrast. The egg was weirdly rectangular and artificial-seeming, like maybe they're frozen pucks that they just microwave. I got an iced Coconut Latte, a seasonal item, and I'm not sure what was going on with that. It was good, but it didn't taste anything like coconut, to the point where I'm not sure if they gave me the right drink. The girl who took my order may not have heard what I said. People who work the register in these places get nervous when a big group walks in, like they're not going to be able to take everyone's order in time and, as a result, they're going to get let go--which would violate the terms of their parole. I can sympathize with their plight. I would never intentionally cause someone to get locked up just because they gave me the wrong drink.

I reviewed the menu and the cove's fall favorites and decided on a cove classic called that girl made with brown sugar + vanilla + cinnamon powder. I wasn't greeted when I entered and I didn't see a food menu, so I chose from the baked items in cases on the counter. The drink menu included many temping items, and a list of tea varieties was on the counter. Later, I noticed an LED screen was changing displays and did include some breakfast sandwich items that I missed. Maybe next time! My latte was good. The bacon cheddar scone was served at room temp and did not seem fully cooked; it had sticky batter in the middle. Unless I missed an adjoining room, seating is limited to counter stools and tables for two-- both high top and low options. There's plenty of outdoor seating, though it wasn't shaded when I visited. Several people were working at computers in the morning I dropped by, and a few tables of two were talking. I think it would be a stretch to have a larger group in the space.
