Looked at reviews and pictures and just expected more. The atmosphere was cute as they roast in the same space as the coffee shop. Service was fine, but the mocha left much to be desired as it tasted like Swiss miss and drip coffee. Also pictures online showed nice designed coffees in ceramic coffee cups and they only offer to go cups. If in town again I would give them another try and choose a different beverage. read more

A delicious cup of coffee! The staff are very friendly and greet you as you enter. They have a great selection of drinks, whole bean coffee, and growlers for cold brew. The interior is of a coffee house with a roasting station. I had ordered the medium mocha shake. I was expecting a frappe, but it is truly the consistency of a shake. The espresso is not over powered by the other flavors. It was a perfect marriage of coffee and chocolate. My colleague ordered a small latte and is a coffee connoisseur. Burnt coffee, RUDE OWNER!! The couple of times I come here it tastes like they burn it just for the espresso to some what taste like coffee..? Bakery was amazing due to the amazing girls baking it, the owner I've noticed be rude to the workers!!! same with his wife. Poor girls they deserve better. Only thing that's good is the brewed classic coffee and bakery but the atmosphere is horrible once you notice the true character of the owners. This was recommended to me by a friend. I had to check it out: cool name, trendy place. But is the coffee good? Oh yeah!! Me: Drip Coffee, Dark. No need for cream, its so good. They have an iced coffee called "Original Liquid Crack" that's very popular. Food: yes, great menu. I got a pound (that's right, an actual pound, not 11oz) of espresso beans. Took that home and enjoying it right now: smooth and fresh. It was brewed the day before i bought it. I'll be ordering more on line. And on the way out, the line went out the door. Home Coffee Roasting and The Coffee Roasters Companion were two of the last books read by one of the guys in our group. With tidbits of information from the book in the back of his mind, he guided us through our tasting experience. On top of that, the staff was super knowledgeable and were excited to share their passion for coffee with us. Impressive! With some help from a barista, we selected the coffees we wanted and they were then prepared in a French press, 4 cups at a time. One of the coffees we drank was a Colombian coffee, medium roast, with hints of melon, coco, chocolate and nectarine. This cup of coffee was outstanding. A total hit with our group of four guys. I can't remember the details of the other coffee we tried, it was some sort of a blonde roast. It was super smooth; in fact, I bet this coffee would be one of the best ways to introduce a novice to high quality coffee experience. Totally impressed with my coffees and the overall experience, the bar has been raised for coffee shops. In the words of the terminator "I'll be back"! Salute! read more

Nice employees, but a super creepy proprietor who lurks around the shop and says vaguely off-putting things to customers. Based on his tirades, I gather that the owner is super proud of being a small business owner, but obviously not proud enough to treat his employees with respect and dignity. When we visited, we saw him repeatedly scolding employees and generally being hostile. Coffee was okay---both of our lattes were lukewarm, and the prices are about 30% higher than other locally-owned cafes in the area. They do have a proper drum roasting setup in the store. I could not tell whether it was the one that was used to roast the coffee that they serve, but nonetheless it was interesting to see. read more

First off the place is nice and the girls behind the counter are fantastic. I don't drink coffee there as it is too strong and not to my liking. Hubby on the other hand loves it. We have been going everyday for the past several months. A month ago I brought in my small dog, she's a Bichon...did I mention she's a registered psychiatric service dog? I was approached by one of the workers. She questioned the dog. I said, yes, she is a service animal, she's not wearing her vest but I can show you her ID. She shook her head and said, no, I don't need any of that. She mumbled and walked away. Now mind you the ADA does not require a vest or an ID. I do that out of courtesy for the public. We were KICKED OUT. Fast forward to a day ago. The place was packed. My dog had her vest on as we found a spot by the wall. Hubby gets in line and here comes the Manager/owner, not sure of her role. I hear her mumbling "here we go again". She comes over saying I can't be here. That I told her employee my dog is NOT a service dog. I said "why would I say that? she is and I showed her the ID." She glanced at it real quick, and said it was fake. I said, that's not what my psychiatrist says. I have had SEVERE PTSD for 42 years. She proceeded to judge me, saying that they haven't seen me with the dog other times. So it's not a real service dog. I told her that if I'm having a good day, I can give her a bit of a break. Frankly, who the heck is she to judge what is a service animal and how I use her.?! So once again we were KICKED OUT In front of a crowded restaurant of people. Humiliated is just an understatement. I'm about 2 seconds to filing a complaint with the ADA. So Anyone out there with any kind of service animal I recommend you avoid this place like the plague. My neighbor told us all about Black Gold when he moved on to the block years ago. My husband went and loved it. So, one rainy Saturday morning many years ago, he brought me there. With one sip, I was amazed at how flavorful but strong plain dark roast coffee could be. We even bought some grounded to go. Fast forward five years, and i just stopped at Black Gold this morning on my way to work. I walked in and was immediately greeted. The girls behind the counter were super friendly and welcoming. I opted for a large dark roast, and a slice of the pumpkin bread, to get my long day at work off to a good start. I couldn't wait to try the bread so i ended up nibbling on it on the ride down Venice Avenue. It was half gone by the time i got to work it was so tasty. Once I sipped my coffee, i was immediately jolted back into reality and ready to conquer the day! I will be a returning weekly consumer here until i am transferred out of Venice. Coffee was great (I prefer the liquid crack) and the bakery was delicious. Great prices. Atmosphere is good. The customer experience was phenomenal. It was pretty neat to see the owner making orders and getting all the coffee ready to be served right there in the front of store and not hidden. The owner personally came out and not only sparked up a conversation with me, but explained the process in depth of how coffee is truly made from the beginning stages to when you drink it. In town for business. It wasn't my choice to go to Starbucks but we did. I ordered an Américano and when I got to the office I discovered they gave me a mocha. I don't even like Starbucks. I did a search and found Black Gold coffee and made a beeline there and ordered. Super friendly staff and recognized they accidentally overcharged me. Not a big deal. Now that I've been here a few more times I want to give that 5 star rating. I just love this place. My most recent visit was a Saturday morning at 9:15am. The line was out the door; I think it was about 10 people deep. I was on my way to a hair appointment and seeing that line I thought for sure I'd be late to my appointment. I am so impressed with how fast it moved! There was 3 or 4 people working and whatever system they had going to serve customers fast flowed so well. On top of that, they're all so friendly and weren't frazzled. It was so nice to see, so welcoming, and so relaxed feeling. Besides all that, my vanilla lattes and lately my pumpkin spice lattes (both with oat milk) are always so good. Something g about them tastes real rather than fake or overdone. Stopped in while traveling, after 2 hrs I really neded a coffee! It's a cute, clean and so cool place. AC was up and it was nice & comfortable. I was greeted immediately by 2 friendly ladies. I don't like strong coffee, so asked one of them for a suggestion. She set me up & I was happy when she said yes to almond milk, or even oatmilk. Coffee was perfect! After over a year of my husband raving about this place, I finally got to try it myself. Located in Venice near I-75, this coffee shop is unassuming from the outside. Yet, the moment you enter, your senses are attacked by the wonderfully strong coffee aroma, and the captivating sights of bags upon bags of coffee beans, as well as the flags that represent their origin countries. The seating area is small and intimate, while the open view to the custom-made roaster immediately catches your attention. I must say, the hype surrounding the coffee itself definitely stands true. I ordered a mocha latte, which I tend to avoid on a usual day, since I tend to find the aftertaste bitter. Well, when I tell you, this is by far the smoothest, most well-balanced mocha latte I've ever tasted. I'm still quite surprised at how much I enjoyed and savored it. My niece ordered a cafe latte, and we agreed that the serving temperature was sublime. It was never scorching hot, yet never got cold, even as we tried to sip slowly to make it last longer. It was truly a wonderful coffee experience I will surely repeat again.
