Awesome experience with Black Forest Westfalias on our recent trip with our feisty, sensory-seeking 3.5 year old (his first camping trip). Van was great and well equipped. We needed to fly to SEA and stay hotels first and last night, wanted to travel light and had a bunch of questions. Mike and van were totally reliable. Mike was super punctual with delivery and pick up, is friendly and conscientious, and totally gets how special it is to camp with kiddos and the extra logistics entailed. We had a terrific experience taking Goldie out to Glacier National Park. Communication with Mike before and during our trip was a breeze, and he went over all of the features/quirks of the bus before we took off. Everything operated as described, and the bus, though it has the acceleration of a Holiday Inn, was a lot of fun to drive and live in. I was thinking of buying a bottle of champagne and rechristening it Gandalf, because you shall not pass anyone. But we saw a lot of animals and geology that we would have missed at the speed we usually travel at, and it was a great throwback to road trips of my youth. Really a great time. Anyhow, it was really comfortable and fun, and I'm already planning a solo weekend away in the fall. If I can make it work, I'll definitely give BFW a call. read more

Black Forest Westfalia is awesome. This was the first time we went van camping, and I wanted to try out a Westfalia. Coming from outside Washington state, I was a little nervous renting online sight unseen. But I liked that we were renting from a small locally owned company. Communications with Mike were easy and quick. Ultimately, my family and I were so happy with our wonderful van! Vancamping with Goldie was the best fun we had camping. It was so relaxing and easygoing. Goldie is a champ! It was hard to part with her after our vacation was over. My wife and I, along with our 6 month old son, were recently honored with the inaugural rental of Gretel, the beautifully renovated Westy van rented out by Mike at Black Forest Westfalias. We took her out on a week-long trip around the Olympic peninsula and had an unbelievably great time. To start, Mike met us at the airport on a Saturday with the van, and went over all of Gretel's features and quirks in detail. He brought the van equipped with full water and propane tanks, linens for the van's two fold-out beds, cookware, and even a french press for coffee! After our orientation, we were off with Gretel on our trip. She drove very smoothly, handled surprisingly well, and was able to tackle a variety of road conditions, including some steep dirt roads. The van was surprisingly comfortable for sleeping and cooking; we had planned to take some breaks from car camping by staying in a motel for a night or two, but we enjoyed glamping it up with Gretel so much that we ended up camping with her for 6 nights straight. Then it was back to Seattle via ferry; Mike was kind enough to meet us at the ferry terminal for van drop-off. Start to finish, renting from Mike was a very positive experience. He really has a passion for Westfalia vans, and has been taking trips with his family in one for years. We're very fortunate that he has decided to share his passion with the world, renting out these beautiful vans for others to enjoy. There is something really unique about driving and sleeping in a Westy; it gives you a sense of being out in nature much more than RVs, but is much more comfortable and enjoyable than regular car camping. My wife and I couldn't have imagined a more enjoyable first trip to take with our baby boy. If you have a chance to take a trip with Gretel or one of Mike's other vans, its a really great and unique experience. Highly recommended. read more

We rented Goldie and she took us to the Olympics. Awesome Westy! My family highly recommends renting her! Mike was very easy to work with, and after going over the nuts and bolts of Goldie, a 2WD Westy, we took her back to our home in Seattle and packed her up. Our trip to the Olympic Peninsula for camping and some backpacking was awesome. It was nice to come back from our backpacking trip in the Hoh Rainforest and have Goldie waiting for us! There's a small refrigerator that we packed full and it came in very handy. The stove worked out wonderfully as well. Plenty of drinking water as well on board Goldie. (Although our kids prefer pumping/filtering from the plentiful streams and rivers...) It slept four comfortably. If you are looking for a brand new Mercedes Sprinter van or a giant RV with a bathroom and generator, BlackForest Westfalias may not be for you. But if you enjoy camping/backpacking, and would like to drive a beautiful old classic with the windows down while listening to the Dead and Phish (or your own favorite bands) on its nice sound system with a giant smile on your face as you explore the PNW, then go for it with this company. My husband, Jared, and I had a great honeymoon in Goldie - one of Mike's westies! Renting was very straight forward, Mike was very communicative, and the camper van was excellent. We drove around from Seattle to Vancouver, Vancouver Island, the Olympic peninsula, and Vashon Island. Goldie served us well - she held our bikes like a champ and the pop top was easy and fun. Took Gretel on a week long adventure around BC and Olympic National Park. Overall amazing experience. The van was clean,everything functional and reliable despite being as older than I am. Mike does a great job of taking care of his fleet. The reservations were easy and everything went as expected from start to finish.
