Booked ahead of time and made my way here at the time I chose. Once here, scan your QR code, get in line and wait until the boat is ready to be boarded. Don't do like other people, walking up to the loading area in the wrong direction expecting to be let on the boat because you are entitled. Once onboard, you will get the safety messages. There are a lot of places to go on the boat. Most will automatically go to the third level, the top deck with all the chairs. Where one might think that you would get the best views. I did this, that is until I felt boxed in and realized I could walk around at free will. Instead I found a place at the stern that gave me better views. I also would transfer to the bow every so often depending on where we were on the tour. This would be the second level, where you could purchase food, drink and souvenirs. The best part of this cruise/tour, I learned more about the history of city than I did on just wandering around. Learned about the history of the city on where things were, why they are there, and deep dives into buildings and companies of the city. The tour starts at Pier 55, and heads north. Going past other piers, waterfront landmarks, and neighborhoods. Seeing corporate campuses, industrial piers, islands, bases, cargo ships, and much more. An hour cruise sure did pack in the history for the city. Plus the captain was entertaining and knowledgeable. Be sure to pay attention during the tour, you'll get the inside scoop on the city and what to seek out when you are exploring.

One tip I might give to John is that the phrase, No Problem is a double negative and not very good verbiage for customer service. He gave us a short rundown of the ship right after we sat at our table and let us know where the washrooms are and how to get to the upper deck. He informed us that we were free to roam at our leisure. We stayed at our table for a bit to take in the ambiance and then before we knew it, dinner was served. I suppose it is fitting as you have to pass through the marina and down a slough with not much to look at before you get to Lake Union so why not spend that time eating. When it comes to the food, I was sorely disappointed. They had a buffet set up with chicken thighs, salmon, mashed potatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, macaroni and cheese, rice pilaf, a green salad and some bread. The chicken was very dry and overcooked. The salmon was very well done and dry as well. The broccoli and mushrooms were also overcooked, and you could see charring on the broccoli, so I assume most of the food was cooked on a grill. My wife liked the macaroni and cheese and we both like the mashed potatoes and green salad. Neither of us had the rice but the bread was okay. After we finished eating, we went to the upper deck to check out the views but by that time, the cruise was half over. The boat doesn't really travel that far in one hour and then they turn around and head back. Outside on the deck, you have an awesome view of the surrounding areas. We traveled underneath a lot of bridges. Ballard, Aurora, Ship Canal and Freemont bridges to be exact. We saw a ton of house boats, gasworks park and a ton of other boaters who were enjoying the water as well. The captain did come over the PA and point out a couple of sights, but I really wish they he'd done more. We're from the Seattle area so we knew most of what we were looking at but there was a couple who were obviously new to Seattle, and I think they would have appreciated a bit more detailed information about what they were seeing. They don't even point out when you pass the houseboat that was featured in the movie, Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan while you're passing it. The boat was mostly quiet except when they needed to make a sharp turn and then this very disruptive motor would kick on and stop our conversation mid-sentence. Other than that, the ride was relaxing but overall, for the money they charge, I expected more and I definitely expected good food. Adult beverages are priced very high and I was even charged for club soda with cranberry juice. I can't say that I'll be taking any more of the Waterways cruises after this first experience but at least I can say that I've been there and done that.

Seattle's Tall Ship is perfect 2 hour activity for anyone looking for a relaxed way to sail around…read morethe Puget Sound. I booked a 4:30 PM tour for 2. Pricing was reasonable at $59 per person. There are some differences in their price tiers dependent on the time and type of sailing. Prices can range between $39-$79. Their email notifications are thorough and provided recommendations on parking, things to bring, and what to expect onboard. Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed. Alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and mimosas are available for purchase onboard the ship. The check-in tent is located by Anthony's on Pier 66. Boarding started at around 10 minutes before departure and crew members walked us down to the marina. The ship is an 85 foot long schooner named Bay Lady and features an 87 foot mast and bench seating with backrests. This ship also has a cannon which they did fire while out on Puget Sound. The tour was 2 hours and unnarrated and bar service immediately started as soon as we cleared the marina. About 30 minutes into the voyage, crew members asked for volunteers to hoist the sails. Overall, I highly recommend this experience. The crew were attentive and consistently checked-in on our group.

We were also lucky enough to have Captain Andy on board. If you get Captain Andy, you'll know immediately. The first time you see his mustache, you're going to have an overwhelming urge to address him as "Sir." That mustache has command presence. Beyond the legendary mustache, Captain Andy was incredible. He personalized the experience, shared his knowledge of the area, and somehow made us feel like we were the only people on board. It never felt like a canned tour. It felt like we were out exploring Seattle and the Salish Sea with someone who genuinely enjoys showing people what makes this area special. Beautiful scenery, a phenomenal vessel, incredible photo opportunities, and a captain with a mustache worthy of its own Coast Guard credential. Absolutely worth doing.
