I've been going to The Black Forest Deli since it opened for business. It's my absolute favorite deli anywhere. When I worked nearby, I would go here every day for lunch. The food is excellent and varied - I mostly get sandwiches but they also have all kinds of Ukrainian dishes. It's a nice change from the standard Lehigh Valley deli. The most interesting thing about BFD is they do a weekly Kiev night where you get several courses (5-7) of awesome Ukrainian food for a very reasonable price. It's a communal style dinner where you sit at a large table with others - I went by myself which I thought would be a bit awkward but it ended up being the most fun dining experience I've had in the Valley. I had recently tried out the Black Forest Deli after hearing a lot of good reviews about the place. The young lady that took my order and explained the menu to me was a sweetheart and definitely made the process of ordering off of an unfamiliar menu very easy. I wasn't sure what to order so I took a leap of faith and tried the Boston Grinder sandwich as this sounded like it would be right up my alley. Roast beef, turkey, bacon, provolone cheese, onions, tomato (no tomato for me), and mayo and was heated in the oven. This sandwich was AWESOME! Comes with a few homemade pickles and a small side of their macaroni salad (also AWESOME). So a few days went by and I went back and had to try their hot dishes, I could not even pronounce half the things i saw on the menu, so I went for the Schnitzel. This was really good, sauteed mushrooms on top, served with red skinned potatoes, beet salad (not a fan - of beets in general), and some kind of bread with a hummus or something similar on it. That wasn't too bad either. All in all, Black Forest Deli is good!!!!! I really want to go back and have one of those 5 course dinners. I definitely want to try more. I went to the Black Forrest Deli for the 1st time today....I will not be back. I ordered the turkey and bacon melt. It had so much horseradish on it I could not eat it. I tried the macaroni salad....all you can taste is the balck pepper. Everything went in the trash. Not impressed. read more

What can I say? We're HOOKED! From the exterior, Vica's joint just looks like a typical sandwich shop, but when you enter into the Black Forest Deli, you are greeted with warm smiles by Vica and her mom, Milana. You're guaranteed to feel right at home. The menu has a huge variety of sandwiches, salads, soups and more! My favorites are the Arzunian Panini and the Robster sandwich. As if the sandwiches weren't good enough, they all come with a side of Vica's AWESOME macaroni salad! Before digging into my sandwich, I always make sure to order a big bowl of Milana's borsch, topped with a dollop of sour cream and some dill. It's to die for! I have occasional dreams about it. If you're not in the mood for a sandwich, try their Halupkis!! They're cooked just right and always hit the spot. My Mom and I love to pop in as often as we can to get our BFD fix! As soon as we sit down, Vica and Milana make us feel right at home. Where else can you get service like this and excellent food? That's right! Nowhere else! I don't think I can squeeze all of the great things I have to say about this establishment into one review, you'll just have to go check it out for yourself! You will not be disappointed! Everyone loves a great corner deli and this one is the best. Whether I'm in the mood for a fresh salad with some great homemade russian dressing, a sandwich with freshly cut meat and cheese or a grilled panini packed with anything you can think of, I can get it here. No matter what I order there is one thing you will always find on my plate and that's a side of the absolute best macaroni salad ever made. Stopped here for lunch on Saturday and it was amazing! All the food tasted fresh and delicious. My partner and I loved to fresh herbs, like dill and parsley in the sandwiches and salads. After seeing mouth-watering photos of handcrafted culinary delights on the deli's Facebook page, i finally took my girls over for a late lunch. The first thing we noticed (besides the neighborhood location being so friendly and quiet) was when you open the door, you are absolutely seduced by the amazing smell of home-cooked goodness!! Owned and operated by a daughter-mother team, the hospitality sparkles as much as the menu! The signature borscht was a welcome revelation- the three of us were fighting over it! And when our salad and sandwiches arrived, the sights and smells were nearly as enchanting as the TASTE!!!! My Vineyard salad was a masterpiece of color and flavor-- featuring ripe vegetables, fruits, and tuna salad in harmonious combination-- WOW!!! Even the standard tuna melt was a total pleasure. And the pannini?!?! I was having a serious case of envy-- it looked SO GOOD-- stacked high with avocado and melted cheese!!! My daughter finished EVERY BITE!!! (except the one that i stole!!!) This family run deli has great food. Much of the focus is on Ukranian and Russian items, but not exclusively. Loved the tuna club. Pierogies of all sorts and not the frozen type, these are fresh. Wife loved the borscht. In addition to the great food, the family are quite good hosts and quite accommodating. Don't be fooled by the "rustic" interior, it's well worth a try, or two. read more

My husband and I finally got a chance to experience the famous Kiev Night and let me just say it was worth the hype. There was so much food you couldn't possibly sample everything. I tried new dishes that were delectable. Mama really out does herself and Vica well, she is the hostess with the most-est! The borscht is still my favorite but the pickle soup is delish and so are the stuffed peppers and their version of deviled eggs, the eggplant topped with cheese and tomatoes ... there is so much more but you can experience it yourself. The weekend brunch is always delightful, with an ever-changing seasonal menu that makes use of the most delicious and complimentary ingredients available. We finally had a chance to attend one of Black Forest Deli's "reservation-only" Kiev Dinners. It was well worth the wait, and you can be sure we'll be going back. Make sure you are VERY hungry when you go. This was a 5-course "tasting", served family style. There was never a lack of food on the table. It was fun to be able to sample a little bit of everything - and learn about the many different dishes available at BFD. The food was served at a nice leisurely pace - over three hours. There was Plenty of time to digest in between each course. Vica, our hostess, was as pleasant as usual, taking the time to not only serve food and drinks and chat with guests, but to also talk about the different dishes on the table. Everything was delicious - and there was plenty of food for everyone. This was a very nice, FUN evening out with friends - old and new. I would recommend going with friends, but even if you can't, you'll be sure to have some new friends by the end of this meal. This really was a "home" style dinner. I found this place by chance about 7 years ago. I was in a hurry and needed a quick lunch. I ordered the chicken noodle soup and their reuben sandwich. And I became an instant fan. Absolutely delicious, fresh sandwiches and the best chicken noodle soup you shall have other than maybe what Mommy makes. And I have been back often since then and I have never been disappointed. Yes, they are listed as Ukrainian. They have a Kiev (capital of Ukraine) night on Thursdays, where they serve delicious home-made Ukrainaian food. Try their Pirozhki (puffed pastry stuffed with meat or veggies), Galuptzi, (cabbage stuffed with meat and rice served over a nice garnish), Vareniki (periogies), Paprikash or their Schnitzel. I find all of them very tasty and worth trying. Ukranian food is very similar to German food and this is as close to home made you can get anywhere. Oh and do try their desserts too. A blini (crepe stuffed with cheese and covered with fruit) or maybe dessert periogies. Wash your dinner down with some Kvas (oh yes, this is a traditional classic consisting of fermented rye bread). If you work around Bethlehem, this can become your regular lunch stop and the Kiev dinner will make you come back...very often. read more
