The first time I went here I got a tuna sandwich on bread and as silly as it it is , it was the best I've ever had! But the second time I opted for hallupkis because it seemed to be a specialty. As we were running errands Good Friday, we decided to take a break and stop by for an early lunch. Right on the corner with the big overhead sign, brick facade and unassuming interior decorated for food service not to impress the public. The place doesn't have much ambiance but all I had to do was look behind the counter and notice a large working table filled with homemade specialty foods and three busy woman scurrying and weaving about the space, taking calls, preparing entrees and cleaning up after diners. I asked for a menu and the owner mentioned many things were sold out and just ask her for something to check availability. I rattled off schnitzel, chicken noodle soup, chicken paprikas, halupki, anything HOT! And then we sat at this lovely pastel plaid covered table and started to chat with family at adjacent table. (kids, Landon and Maddi!) They were eating and chatting and offering comments on certain dishes. We weren't expecting much and so, the dishes were presented en masse. Chicken schnitzel with the butteriest mashed potatoes EVER. An accompanying plate of garlic buttered rye, a side of potato salad with another side of beet salad. All homemade and yummy! My hubs ordered chicken paprikas of buttered egg noodles topped with chunks of chicken. He loved every bite, especially the remaining red sauce laying at the bottom of the plate. We visited this place for lunch and had a great first experience. The deli was recommended to us by a friend for its Ukrainian and Russian food. The deli is located in a residential neighborhood in Bethlehem and is in an old corner shop/ deli. We easily found street parking. The storefront is very welcoming and so is the staff. Annie greeted us and had us sit any where we liked. She answered our many questions and helped us with our orders. We ordered the snitzel which also came with mashed potatoes and a plate of beet salad, potato salad, farmer's cheese and eggplant spread on toast, the 3 soup appetizer (pickle, chicken noodle, and pelmeni), and a plate of 10 pierogis (spinach and potato-cheese). It was great trying the different foods and they were well flavored. This was a lot of food and we only ate maybe half! We took the rest home. Annie and Milana were very welcoming and we enjoyed talking with them. We definitely plan on returning! The deli appears to be open for breakfast and lunch, but does advertise a special dinner meal. Haven't been here for awhile and stopped by to pick up quarts of soup. We missed this place so much. It's so homey and welcoming and the food is outstanding. So glad we live so close. Cute space with friendly staff are the hallmarks of this local Russian deli. We started off with the Borscht which was so good tasting both light and flavorful. Sandwiches were both good but typical deli style sandwiches but nothing spectacular. The pierogis were a huge disappointment however being gummy and flavorless. There about 8 doughy crescents filled with the blandest mashed potatoes and then topped with sour cream. I had such high hopes having previously only having the frozen variety which i like so eating them in a Russian deli I was more than a little hopeful but these were just awful and as we were paying almost 40.00 for one bowl of borsht, two deli sandwiches one tuna and one corned beef the aforementioned pierogis and 2 bottled sodas we noticed the freezer was full of frozen boxes of pierogis. Maybe actual fresh homemade ones will fill the bill. I'll keep searching ! read more

Having seen them on tv and being Ukrainian, I figured I had to try this place. I couldn't have been happier I did. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was perfect. My father and I started with the borsch soup and chicken soup. Great flavor in both. We both had the stuff cabbage and potatoes and when you order they give you bread with eggplant spread and a potato salad and beets. Everything was delicious and you can't beat that home cooking that they do. We brought home pirogies that they have and all I can say is WOW! The potato and mushroom were the best I've ever had. I've wanted to stop in here for some time now but I always think of it on Sundays when they are closed. Made my first trip to BFD today and I was not disappointed. I went with the chicken soprano. 8.50 for the sandwich seemed a little expensive but it was a nice surprise that it came with a little scoop of pasta salad and some pickle coins. I would probably only get BFD to-go as the place is a little beat up (nothing wrong with that), but I can say that I will definitely be back. Worth a stop. read more

I'm new to the area, right. I hit up yelp because I have no idea what to eat or where to go. Black Forest Deli tops the Best Rated list. Sure. I'll go there. Getting there is a little weird. This place isn't where a restaurant belongs. There are no stores around, just houses and no parking except curbside in front of some dude's house while he sits on his porch looking at me with that friendly Pennsylvania look that everyone gives me that says, "Kid, you really don't belong here" in only the most polite of ways. Alright. Go under the Deli's yellow awning and into a restaurant that, again, looks like it just doesn't belong here. The two Russian ladies have thrown up some semi-permanent looking partitions and some mismatched tables together to turn this old I-don't-know-what-this-building-is-meant-for into a restaurant. What have I gotten myself into? The younger Russian woman asks if I know what I want, offers some Halooshkey(?). I'm a little phased and am frankly a little worried now and I'm not thinking clearly so I just nod and hope I haven't made a terrible mistake. The woman says, Great. Would you like a bowl of borscht? Oh god, what have I gotten myself into? Well, it's too late now. Mistakes have gotten me this far, lets just take this rabbit hole all the way down. I get the borscht. It all comes together. I see a bowl of red soup with lots of cabbage and a plate of cabbage, noodles, and, is that pastrami? What have I gotten myself into? I take a bite of both of the dishes and they are excellent. Absolutely wonderful. Never has cabbage been so appealing to me. The borscht is warm and gentle, a wonderful starting dish. The halushki is cooked just right and has a surprising, though light, sweetness to it. It was at these first few bites that I realized where I was. I wasn't in California anymore. Things here are done differently. The Russian ladies are a mother-daughter pair who wanted a restaurant and found some place and just did it. They didn't have a whole lot and maybe didn't even have much of a plan. They through a restaurant together in some neighborhood and made sure that their cooking could carry them. What I am try to say is that Black Forest Deli gets five stars from me because not only did I have a good meal, I had a good experience and that is something really special. TLDR: It might seem a little out of place but Black Forest Deli offers food and experience on their menu and it is absolutely my favorite place in the area. read more

What BFD lacks in ambiance it makes up for with awesome sandwiches and superior customer service. I went in recently with my father for lunch and the place was hoppin with take-out service and I soon saw why. My turkey sandwich melt was delicious as was my father's roast beef. Victoria and her mother run the joint and add a feisty Russian personality and a friendly face to your experience. UPDATE: As others noted BFD is famous for their Thursday night 5 course Russian dinners. I just had mine last night and it was awesome. You sit family style with 14 others and the food was amazing. I tried all kinds of new things - never had Russian food before. Menu changes every week so call ahead. Reservations are mandatory and often book up weeks in advance. It's easy to see why. Two words - MACARONI SALAD! I'm being 100% serious when I say that their macaroni salad is the work of some kind of Russian Angel, it is absolutely amazing! If all they sold was macaroni salad, I would still make a point to drive out there during my lunch hour on a regular basis. The good news here is, they do have a full menu, and the food they offer is just as impressive. Just the other day I ordered the "Tossed Fruity Salad", and it was so, so good. They have a wide variety of specialty salads and I can't wait to go back and try more. Just to throw this in here- the deli is run by a Mom/Daughter team and they are such nice people! The daughter runs a Twitter account for the business and does a great job at promoting the place using social media. It was actually through Twitter that I heard of BFD and I am so glad I decided to try it out. Must update...I've been here for lunch several times since the Kiev night we went to. The sandwiches are fantastic! Vica & Milana are more than happy to let you make up your own sandwich (which I am famous for doing, and the folks at many delis get cranky about that). Now, I don't particularly care for the macaroni salad (I just don't like anyone's mac salad) but Vica is always more than happy to give my portion to my hubby. We both win! read more

Heck, what can I really add that hasnt been stated already about BFD? Back on 1/25/12, relying on fellow Yelpsters' honesty, I stopped by for lunch while passing through Bethlehem on business. Sampled the warm borscht and it was stupendous. Had a bowl of split pea soup that was a league better than my Yia Yia's (Greek for grandmother) and the stuffed cabbage was off the hook delicious. Can someone remind me why dreck like McDonalds exist when we have Mother/Daughter gems like this in the world? BFD deserves your hard earned dollars. You won't be sorry. read more

This is my favorite place to grab lunch in Bethlehem, hands down, and gets 5 stars as a tie between tasty food and good service. Also, the owners "get" social media, and if you're a regular, may hold Tweet convos with you while you're there. Which is pretty awesome. I have a liking for Polish and Russian foods, and was pleasantly surprised when I first tried BFD's borscht at how good it was. Both the cold and hot are superb, as are the pierogi and halupki. BFD also hosts Ukrainian style dinners on select Thursday nights. We haven't been to one yet, but I'm sure we will go to one soon. I need to stop writing this review because I'm getting extremely hungry just thinking about their Moscow salad :D. read more

Excellent corner deli serving Slavic dishes. The perogies were excellent along with the Sopranos sandwich. Grilled chicken with roasted peppers on Chibatta roll. Wife had the Russian pastrami also equally as good. Friendly owners who went out of their way to make us welcome and offer suggestions. They honored the free desert offer with a homemade juice and crepes and balks. All delicious we will be back next time we fly into Alantown. I've been a long time follower of Black Forest Deli on FaceBook and Twitter, but I've never actually been there until today. The owner, Vica, is a marketing master on the social media outlets. Anyway, today I was in the area and decided to stop by. I heard a lot of people raving about the macaroni salad. I ordered some and I must say, it's some of the best mac salad I've ever had. I instantly noticed the unique flavor as soon as it hit my palette. The other thing I wanted to try first was the pierogies. I am of Ukranian nationality, so I've been eating pierogies all my life. My grandmother made them from scratch, my mother made them, and I recently started making them from scratch. Vica and her mom make these from scratch as well, and theirs rival my grandmother's. I just got done eating them and I'm regretting not buying more. Frozen store-bought pierogies don't even compare. The menu had a large selection of items that sounded absolutely fantastic from their descriptions.
