Black Dog Pub (Covington Rd, Fort Wayne) - community bar with good food and charm First time visiting the Black Dog Pub. I've avoided trying them because I'd heard they were always busy and had long wait times. On this occasion we had no wait even though they were really busy. I'm really glad we gave the Black Dog Pub a try. Black Dog is located in a strip mall at the Coventry Plaza. Parking can be deceiving - if the front lot is full then park out back. There is a small outdoor eating area which you will encounter as you go inside. The Pub has an inviting but small bar located right at the entrance. The restaurant will only seat about 50 dinners inside. The four person table is very small. Not much room for 4 water glasses, 4 drinks, 1 appetizer dish and four entrees - actually painfully small. On this night the outside temp was 90 degrees. The kitchen wouldn't make pizzas, calzones or grill wings when it is this hot (safety reasons). The team here was very friendly and helpful. They really hustled, kept the refills coming and served us well!! The menu is fairly large - salads, burgers, pizza, sausage rolls/calzones, sandwiches, subs and wraps. Something for everyone. All items seemed reasonably priced...and the ones we tried were delicious! Here is a run down of the food items we ordered: -Onion Rings: Black Dog says these are the "Best in Town". I'd say they were really good and worth a try! They start with a thick piece of onion and hand batter it with a very thick coating. Not too oily. Not much added flavor in the breading. Just an outstanding onion ring! -Side House salad: nice sized salad with a variety of side vegetables and cheese. Everything was fresh and tasty. -Cole Slaw: "Our signature Cole Slaw" better be good! The slaw has medium sized cabbage and carrot pieces bathed in a very light mayo sauce. The dish is slightly sweet with a little added seasoning. It comes off refreshing and cool yo taste. I really liked this signature dish. -Sweet Chili Chicken wrap: my wife had the wrap. The chicken was moist and tender. The char broiling gives it an added flavor coupled with a very mild sweet chili sauce. No strong after taste kick. She really liked the delicious wrap. -8 piece jumbo wings: on the appetizer section of the menu for $11.50. In the 8 order...there were probably more large to medium sized wings than jumbo wings. My teriyaki wings were lightly fried such that the skins only had a small amount of crisp. The inside was thoroughly cooked - no pink. Unfortunately, they might have been a little over cooked as they were solid white and a little tough/dry. The teriyaki sauce was thinner in consistency. They dipped the wing in a healthy amount of sauce. Much of it pooled in the bottom of the basket. It had a decently dark and bold teriyaki flavor with no spicy after kick. read more

A classic dive bar (dog themed, who doesn't love dogs?!) with some definite regulars sitting at the bar and some awesome food, especially the classics! We came with our family and service was mediocre, the food shined. Loved the coleslaw and Parmesan-crusted grilled cheese! The filet was cooked exactly as requested and was super juicy. The Philly sandwich was absolutely amazing!! Highly recommend this pub not just for drinks named after dogs (huge beer menu) and eating appetizers from dog bowls, but mostly for the food! read more

Came here to watch a March Madness game had dinner and a couple of drinks. Our food was great! Both were huge and delicious. We were delighted with the food taste, portions, and service. A better website lately I love fish, especially raw or grilled. Not the place to go. I have selected the 8oz filet mignon+2sides@ $20 several times. Except for minor over-cooking the first time (a few years ago), my medium-rare steak has been perfect; I recommend it with their spuds and coleslaw. I have dined in fine steak houses from CA to NYC to Boca to Nashville to Mnpls; they were no better at 5x$. In town for an event and need something quick between sessions. First off, the service was great. She was always right there and had a great personality too! Breaded mushrooms were spot on and wish we'd ordered another basket. Really good bar food app and breading handled the large mushrooms well. The pizza was the downfall. Left in oven way too long as half of it was burnt to black on the crust and a rusty orange cheese. Ordered mushrooms on the entire pizza and found some on about 3 pcs of a large. Crust was dry and tasted of stale bread. We were really surprised they even brought it to the table to serve in the first place. If in town, I'd return but I wouldn't order the pizza! read more

We love Black Dog Pub. I'm a fan of the comfy neighborhood bar atmosphere here. We've always had great service here but both times sat inside right next to the bar. I've noticed a few commented about bad service and it made me wonder if where your seated can affect that. Just a thought. I've had a burger and the pork tenderloin here. I loved both but my absolute favorite was the pork tenderloin sandwich. The homemade bun is just the right size for the large tenderloin and the meat is breaded and fried to the perfect crisp. I recommend mayo and yellow mustard on the sandwich along with all toppings. My personal favorite accompaniment is a bud light draft but that's just the St Louis in me. read more

Really wanted to like this place given that I have a black dog. :) I was looking for a place with outdoor dining, which it does, if you want to sit in the middle of all the smokers who insist on standing upwind of the patio. I knew I should have cut my losses when the tall gin and tonic I ordered came in a short glass. Ordered a patty melt - didn't have the option to request medium. We had our dog and it was a rainy day. We were hesitant to try as the reviews were not as good as I would have liked. The service was great. The food was tasty and not from a box. We truly enjoyed our meal and the patio was excellent for bringing your four legged friend! My daughter had the buffalo chicken sandwich it looked fresh and they melted blue cheese crumbles on top! This is your typical cozy neighborhood bar. We walked in on a busy Friday evening and we were instantly greeted by a waitress. She was super busy but assured us we'd be next in line for a table. Sure enough, about 15 minutes later we were seated and she took our drink order. We put in our food order shortly after and it was quick to come out! I got the cuban sandwich with a side of fries. The cuban was awesome! The bread was toasted but not too crunchy that it hurts when you eat. The fries were fresh and cooked very well! When we're on vacation, we always like to try out whatever food an area of the country is known for. When you're in Indiana, that HAS to be the Fried Pork Tenderloin sandwich. It's something that you'll find there, but few other places in the country. I'm not too sure why, because it is incredible when done right. And- Here they do it RIGHT. I'm always willing to drive a bit off my route when required to get the best, and this time I am glad that we did. We were going to be passing through the Fort Wayne, IN area- And I wanted to find a good pork tenderloin. I am from Indiana originally, and I can remember getting them at the state fair when I was a kid- And loving them. My wife is not from the area, so she had never had (or even heard) of one. After a little searching on the web, we found this place. It's not much to look at from the outside- In a strip mall, we've probably driven by 100's of places that look just like it. But the food was outstanding. We started out with an order of fried mushrooms, which were some of the best I've ever had. They were made fresh- had obviously never been frozen. VERY good. But- We came for the tenderloin, and were NOT disappointed. They call it the "Big A** Tenderloin" for a reason- It is HUGE. Looking back, we probably should have shared one, especially with the mushrooms... It is a 1/2 lb tenderloin, pounded thin, breaded, and then deep fried. It is served on a HUGE, house made bun along with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. It is served with a side of home made potato chips, also great. I somehow managed to finish MOST of the sandwich- Usually, I'd have ditched the bun about half way through but not this time- It was just too good! We didn't have a chance to branch out and try anything else on the menu, but judging from what I saw (and smelled!) while we where there I suspect that this is one of those places that you can't really go wrong no matter what you choose. Three of us stopped in for a late lunch, one guy from town and two guys from Muskegon, MI. Janeen was our superb waitress. Bright, cheerful, and energetic. She took our beverage order and returned quickly to take our food orders. Two opted for the grinder & homemade chips and I chose the 1/2 lb cheeseburger with the chip & a side order of onion rings. The food arrived quickly (the rings first) and my two friends both said the grinders were delicious! My burger was cooked as requested (medium rare) and both juicy and delicious. The onion rings were huge with a light batter cooked a perfect light gold. The thrre of us said they were some of the best tings we have ever tasted. I even brought home the survivng two for my brother, who also loves great onion rings. Janeen was always alert and checking upon our wants or needs. She was the consummate waitstaff woman. Kudos Janeen for allowing us to truly enjoy a great lunch food stop with a perfect person to take care fo us. I wish she lived worked closer to Muskegon so many could benefit from her presence. 3 1/2 hours is more tha a casual drive for lunch, but if you're in the area I would highly recommend stopping & eating here (please ask for Janeen). Met some out of town friends here. This place is a staple of Fort Wayne. People might say it's dark and gloomy but that is the character of the place. Th waitresses are always nice and helpful. I do notice there is not a turnover of staff which is a great sign. The food here is the all American menu and it wonderful. If one were to come here I would recommend their "Shrooms". They are hand breaded and HUGE! In this day, I got the club sandwich which is so big this could be meal for two. The house chips were part of the side which are made in house. My husband got the fish-n-chips and he said it was good but just not the best. Remind you this is more of a burger place. Myself, I tried his meal and liked it. So it depends on the person. They have a room for family and a bar room. So all ages can come. The only negative thing I can say is if they are slammed busy, there is only one bathroom (toilet) for each gender. And if you really have to go or your child has to go it can be very frustrating. read more
