The first time I ate at a Black Bear Diner it was incredible. I think that one was in Mt. Shasta. The second time it was horrific. That was in Armadillo TX. Well folks. Wait staff polite and pleasant. They checked on us regularly and took our orders quickly. My wife's meal and mine were a bit above average. In the downside, when we sat down at the table my utensils were wrapped nicely in a napkin. The fork unfortunately had left Over food on it. When mentioned my waitress swapped out. Unfortunately we had 3 pesky flies in our booth that joined us for our entire meal and the widow had two large sticky handprints we got to look at as we enjoyed our breakfast. There is not a lot of places to eat in Yreka and we were meeting our kids and grandkids there so we chose Black Bear. We were seated promptly but had to ask for kids menus twice. It is a little run down but the food was good. I had a Caesar salad with blackened salmon and it was quite good. Hubby had Tri-tip on the smaller plates and it was plenty. Our grandson had a chorizo burrito and he loved it. Our little granddaughter had chocolate chip pancakes and she also loved them. Everything was good! During a lunchtime visit, my hubby left his laptop behind so we called and spoke to Dakota and she secured it behind the hostess station. After a sleepless night (my husband is an author and all his work was on that computer) we tried calling the next morning and the phones were down so my next move was to call Yreka PD and they sent an officer down there who took possession of the laptop and immediately called us back. I was then connected with Janene in lost & found/claims at Yreka PD and we arranged to have the laptop shipped to us through Fed Ex and it arrived safely the next day. I had their BLT with added Avocado, Wife N had their beef (Tri tip) dip. BLTa was pretty tasteless. I mean, the bacon was bacon, the tomato was a tomato, etc but this 4-ingredient sandwich just lacked in the flavor arena. Same goes for the dip whose beef tasted steamed with a bit of pepper. Came here a breakfast stop during our west coast road trip. Ample parking and the lot was well maintained. This is a very typical Black Bear Diner. The food is good, the service is good, and the atmosphere is classic diner. It's a solid place to eat in Yreka. The parking lot is a little on the small side, but there is parking available nearby. Very convenient on and off the freeway and just a short walk away from the Tesla Superchargers. My roommate and I visited again today and this is usually a great place to be and we have NEVER had a bad experience until today. Our server was also a supervisor her name tag said. Her name was Jackie and she was paying attention to others and sitting with others behind us and not listening and giving us things we were allergic to and didn't take the time to give us things we wanted and needed. She didn't take a couple extra seconds to listen. She wasn't even at our table except for taking our order (which was wrong) because she didn't listen. oh my goodness.. well well well. you did it again black bear, you always find a way to just bless my taste buds with your extra flavorful dishes. i ordered a cheeseburger with avocado and mushrooms, i must say the burger was cooked very tasteful and the mushrooms themselves were just as delightful but what separated this dish from other diners was the french fries and most importantly the ranch that came with it, possibly the best ranch i have ever had. the service was great too, they got us in quick, nicely took our orders and got our food to us in roughly 10 minutes or less, which is very well for the quality of the food and the amount of orders taken.(3) i love black bear and i 10/10 recommend you choose to eat here more often! read more

Came in on Sunday 8/3/25 and my mom asked if there was a wait. The hostess talked to one of the waitresses real quick, not sure what was said but the hostess (long, straight, light brown hair) then told my mom that she would be able to seat us in a minute, they just needed to clean the table. Not an issue, and we wouldn't have minded a short wait either way. About 15 minutes pass, people come and go, and I asked my mom if she thought it would take this long to clean a table. My bf is a sous chef at a restaraunt, and typically we are very patient when we go out to eat because we understand it can get busy. He said "they seem like maybe they are busy" and I responded with "thats not a problem, but she would say it would just be a minute, not that there is a wait, so maybe they forgot about us." My mom went in to ask the hostess for an update, and she acted like she had never seen my mom before, she said "oh idk what is going on, I was outside." My mom said "It was you I talked to." She was kind of rude with her tone, but again, thought maybe she was just busy or something. She goes to check and the table was ready, she did just forget about us. While walking us to the table she seemed irritated that we were making her do her job, but still I just assumed I was reading the situation wrong, but if you have ever gotten this vibe from someone working, you know what I mean lol. I made a comment on the way to the table to my bf saying "see I knew it didn't take this long to clean a table" in response to his comment earlier about them being busy, the hostess turns as says with an attitude "well they literally just leave so thats why." I genuinely would not have cared if there was a wait, but to be told that they just had to clean the table (which doesn't check out if "they literally just left"), and given an attitude when asked for an update when you actually just forgot about us was an awful way to start off our experience. She didn't take our drink order either, which after further observation she deifnitely should have (the waitress asked if she did, and the male host was taking orders when he sat tables). If I rated my experience based on only the hostess, it would be 1 star. I understand not enjoying your job everyday, I worked at a very popular coffee shop with green aprons for about a decade, its not always pleasant. But it is not our fault that you work there, and all we were asking for was BARE MINIMUM service. The reason I kept trying to excuse the attitude I was feeling from her tone and body language is because I can understand how being busy and moving quickly can sometimes come off as being irritated with a customer, but after her little comment, and the overall vibe of the situation, it was clear she either hated her job or she just hated that we wanted to be sat. Either way she really had poor customer service for someone who is working a job that is literally centered around providing customer service lol. Genuinely, find a new career. I rated it 3 stars instead of 1 simply because our waitress was amazing. She was so kind and immediately lifted our mood. I wish I got her name so she would be properly acknowledged but I didnt. She had a few tattoos on the arm and curly hair. I debated even writing a negative review because she was awesome, but then decided the feedback may be appreciated since the hostess is the first person people are coming into contact with and she has a horrid attitude. It's always a bit of a shock to read bad reviews of a diner--and a chain diner, at that--and see complaints for being what they are. Black Bear Diner is nothing special, but to me it met the needs and expectations of those who dined there. Service was a bit frenetic the day we ate here, but they were also trying to juggle many, many firefighters who were battling a nasty blaze west of the city. Our waitresses were apologetic about the situation (hardly their fault) and friendly. The food generic and hearty diner fare, but I was very pleased to see and taste fresh ingredients in my meal. I had the hobo omelet and my wife had the taco salad. Both were perfectly edible and were just what was needed for a pit stop on a long road trip. Lastly, I saw no evidence of the uncleanliness that others have mentioned: the dining room itself, the cutlery and the restrooms were all very clean. Who knows? My family and I stopped here on a road trip last week and the service was great! The wait time for a table of six was a little long (but I believe six people DOES constitute a herd and therefor a wait is to be expected). Once we got to our seats our server was friendly, funny, and attentive, and the food came out fast! It was delicious, and even the kids ate just about everything on their plate. Shout out to the front of house. They managed the throng of Black Bear aficionados and weary travelers from NB & SB The 5 exists with precision and a smile. The 4-top booth felt like a comfortable living room couch. The table was spotless. The condiment tray was well stocked. The salt & pepper shakers, ketchup bottle and the 3 bottles of proprietary Black Bear sauces were wiped. It's a personal peeve of mine (I was a waiter during grad school). When I reach for the salt or ketchup container, it's always 50/50 in not getting my digits slimed with the previous customers messiness. Our server must have anticipated me. They were wiped and cleaned. There was 0 post dishwasher soap residue spots on the tableware. Zero, nada, nope, none, zilch, zip crumbs on the carpet beneath the table. The food was comfort food. Tried for second time to dine in. My daughter's boyfriend wanted to treat us to lunch. My daughter and I always spit an order being they are generous portions. We spilt the California burger, it was very bland and dry. Not pleased I told the waitress, she gladly had them redo our burger, but when we got it, it was so salty my daughter through up in the bathroom. I tried it as well, very salty. Like the cook got attitude being told it was bland so decided to take it out on us. I spoke to the hostess who was very polite and explained, she was kind enough to ask for another replacement. By this time my daughter had no appetite we boxed it and came home. I called and spoke to the manager in which she was quite passive about the whole thing and just said 'oh I'll talk to the cook.'
