My wife is from Georgia and always critiques the grits wherever she goes and says they aren't authentic. And she loved these grits! I especially loved the sliced ham! It was excellent! I would give this zero stars if I could. We arrived and there were quite a few people waiting to be seated. We asked the hostess how long the wait would be and she said 20 minutes. While we were waiting, we saw tons of open tables with no people. Turns out the hostess was just signing folks up, but not actually paying attention to when tables cleared. Another employee came and finally cleared the bottleneck and sat a bunch of folks. Once we sat, this same employee brought our drinks bc nobody was paying attention. We waited 10 minutes, in the back dining room which was empty except one other table. When she finally showed up, we immediately ordered bc we had been waiting so long. She took our order and left. Where we were seated, we could see into the prep area. We saw about 5 waitresses all hanging out, playing on their phones, and eating. We saw one other waitress working like crazy trying to get people taken care of. Nobody helped her or left to check on their tables. After an hour at this point, we walked out. There were still tons of folks waiting to be seated, a bunch of empty tables, and the waitresses just hanging out. 0/10 would not recommend and we won't be going back. read more

Decided to finally try it. I have been apprehensive since I am from northern California and many of the Texas versions are not as good. This one isn't either. It looks just like it, but that's it. We waited to be just to have someone acknowledge us for three minutes, employee after employee walked by, at least 10 passes by us, not one said " hello or welcome". So many employees and not one smile or happy conversation to be heard through our entire visit. I definitely would recommend service training to create a more friendly atmosphere. The scramble eggs are not fresh, so they come cooked hard or harder, the thick bacon is pretty thin, the biscuits and gravy came with the gravy poured over the outside of the biscuit, who does that? Turn it over and let it soak in. The one good item was the smoked ham, delicious. Really a bummer as I wanted to like it so much, but will stick with my Rockwall breakfast places. read more

Arrived with a party of 17 to celebrate a birthday party. Told wait time was 45 minutes. At the 1.5 hour mark we literally had to request to be seated. There were several open spot available. And rather seat us in a group, the seated us all in separate tables. Now keep in mind there were a set of tables in a group that would accomadate us, but we were not given that option. I came here recently with my mom and was shocked at how cute it is! When you step inside Black Bear Diner it feels like you enter a little restaurant at the bottom of a ski lift in Colorado! The menus are made to look like newspapers and everything is very wood lodge and bear themed! The food is also amazing! There is plenty to choose from and the breakfast is an all day affair! My and the wife's first time eating at this Black Bear Diner location. She had the Bob's black bear burger and side salad and I had the corn beef hash and eggs topped with cheese along with a side of bacon, spicy Italian sausage and French toast. Everything looked good on my plate but unfortunately as I ate my eggs I noticed a hair stuck in between my cheese and eggs....i pulled it out and set it to the side and continued to eat. I am not one to make a big fuss. Then I found another hair stuck in the cheese . I isolated the unwanted combo on a side plate. Then I found a third inch long hair egg cheese combo and called the waitress over. She looked at my compilation of hairs embedded in cheese and took the plate away immediately and apologized. She offered to have the dish remade but I didn't want it at that point. I continued to eat the French toast sausage and bacon sides and they were good. The wife liked her salad and burger although she felt the burger was a bit dry. The ambiance was nice and the waitress was attentive. It's a bit of a drive but we may try them again but whoever is cooking at this location in the back needs a Hair or possibly beard net. read more

Corned beef was a little lacking in presence and flavor. And barely any sauerkraut. Overall, big disappointment. Chicken fried steak went over well by OP, but he eats anything. We are very familiar with Black Bear, as we have family in California and BB is abundant there. I was excited to see that they opened one here! We had an overall very good experience. The decor is everything we love about Black Bear. Our server was Leo, he was very kind & attentive. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes & green beans. Everything was very good. My son ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast and his was also very good. I did take a star off because the potatoes were not hot & the coffee was just mildly warm....cold after the first sip. I usually love the coffee at Black Bear, so that was a letdown. We will return when we are in town, next time for breakfast. I ordered the Avocado on wheat toast, fresh fruit and eggs plate. Hubby got the Southern Scramble. Now bring your appetite because they feed you well! My fresh fruits were nice and sweet, my avocado toast was a fresh avocado placed on the toast. Hubby had two huge biscuits covered with a tasty sausage gravy. Black Bear Diner review Where do I start with this review? I'm really wanted to leave an overall good review but as I've looked back on the dining experience with my family, it was a very medicore experience despite me enjoying my meal overall. The meals ordered were: Fish and fries, which came with cod filets, hush puppies, and fries. This was a replacement meal as my mom's original order was out (All you can eat catfish). The 2 egg breakfast meal, which came with scrambled eggs, sausage, and two biscuits with gravy. I ordered the Chicken-fried Steak breakfast meal which also included eggs, grits, and substituted in sweet cream pancakes instead of biscuits and gravy. Lastly, a bowl of Chilli with a cornbread muffin to-go. I'll start with what went well/tasted great. The Chicken-fried Steak I ordered was delicious. As we're the eggs and sausage links. My brother enjoyed the biscuits and gravy and those were yummy while hot. The fries my mom got with her fish were good too as was the cornbread muffin that came with a side salad. Now what didn't taste great/go right was a much larger list. 1. The hush puppies were rock hard! Like trying to break them open was a real chore. Definitely overly fried. 2. Same thing for the fish ordered by my mom. It loss all sense of freshness and tenderness because it was so overly fried. She didn't even eat a whole filet. 3. The chill to go that my brother order never came (though at least it wasn't included on the check) 4. I didn't get my substituted pancakes or the original biscuit that came with the meal I ordered. I don't now if our server was just distracted, new, or both but it was just such a mess and I think between the long wait to even have a server come by once we were seated and the wait for food to arrive, we'd even realize how many items were missing by the time we wrap our meal. On the suface, I liked this place and would have wanted to return in the future, but after the ho-hum service and multiple missing items and quality of some of the meal portions, I don't know if that will be happening anytime soon. read more

Every time I am west and yelp a diner and see Black Bear as an option I know instantly that it will be in my top 5 for comfort food destination. This time out I had the country fried steak meal with soup, salad, mashed potatoes and country gravy. This was plenty of food but I worked my way through it. It was no surprise that I also came back the following morning for breakfast. This morning was my first time to eat in a Black Bear Diner. It will also be my last time to eat in a Black Bear Diner. The service and ambiance were both fine. The portions were more than ample. Unfortunately, the appeal of the food (I had one of their breakfast omelets) was a notch or two below mediocre. I would have definitely preferred smaller portions of food that I would actually WANT to eat instead of a mountain of food that bored me after the second fork full and for which I could not come up with any reason to indulge in a third fork full. My parents taught me to always go out of my way to find something nice to say. Black Bear Diner we had such high hopes for you all. We went for breakfast one time with my sister in law and it was delicious and huge portions. The service was just average but we liked the food so we kept it on our "to go to" list. The next time we went for dinner... I wondered if we were in the same restaurant entirely! We got the all you can eat fried fish deal. The table next to us who arrived way after got served before us. Next the server came out and looked at us funny and when I asked where our food was she said OH I FORGOT ABOUT YOU GUYS and DIDNT PUT YOUR ORDER IN. Say what?! Never ever say that to a customer. Then she said they were having an "issue with the fryer" in the back so it would be a while. We had already waited 45 minutes but we were hungry and did not feel like driving around or waiting anywhere else. That would be come a regret. We ended up getting the worst fried fish I have ever had. I didn't expect much since it was all you can eat but for 17+ dollars a person for that it was below school lunch cafeteria grade and burnt. Sadly we picked at our sides, paid our bill yes we actually paid for this and left. We have no desire to return. Not even for breakfast anymore. You guys ruined the idea of you all for us. My coworkers and I came in for lunch, we were very excited because we have been waiting for them to open for weeks. Upon arrival we we're greeted by several employees and shown to our table. We were presented with the menu and I instantly felt overwhelmed once I opened it up. There are a lot of menu items to choose from, one thing I loved was that they serve breakfast all day. After several minutes of going back and forth between menu options I opted for the Bear's Choice and selected sausage links and the sweet cream pancakes. Food came out pretty quickly, and looked appetizing. My meal was just okay, the eggs were cooked perfectly the sausage was flavorful the pancakes were a little dry the syrup definitely helped. My husband and I patronized this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. The decor is interesting, definitely bears and outdoor themed...kinda cute! There's table, booth and bar stools like a diner. Felt cozy and the service was nice along with the music selections. The food was so delicious! I ordered the veggie omelette with potatoes and a side of bacon.
