When I've noticed a newly painted home in my neighborhood, I've often said (admiringly/enviously) "Ohhh, that paint is as smooth as the icing on a wedding cake."
Now, thanks to Bill Kohler of BK Painting, I envy no more-- because I have that level of quality painting in my own home. And it's on window sashes and trims, the most demandingly detailed kind of home painting there is.
Mr. Kohler did careful prep work, which in this case included caring for some lumpy, old, many-times-painted surfaces. Though our project proposal promised two coats of paint, he persisted in sanding just a bit more and adding an additional coat to get it exactly right.
Two other aspects of his work that impressed me:
1) he removed all the hardware in order to provide an unobstructed painting surface-- and before reinstalling all that hardware, he soaked off all the old paint and scrubbed off all the rust and ancient dust. All of the hardware gleams like new.
2) When there were no standard paint chips to match my exterior paint, he had the paint color specially mixed for my project, using for his color sample a screw that had a tiny dab of paint on it. (Okay, if I personally had accomplished this level of perfection, I would be bragging about it for the rest of my life-- but for Mr. Kohler, it was just an ordinary part of doing the good work he does.)
Plus, he is friendly and easy to work with-- you can ask him any questions, and it's perfectly comfortable to have him and his crew in your home for the length of your project. The fee for this very good work is reasonable. It's ALL as smooth as the icing on a wedding cake-- definitely meets Yelp "good as it gets!" standard. read more
