This was my 1st and last time shopping at Sterling. It's really just the same sad story...supporting a black franchised owned business and receiving piss poor service and product. Not all businesses match the statement. However, Sterling does. I only scheduled an eye exam here because I've purchased directly from Dear Emery a few times and was told from a colleague their frames are sold at Sterling too. I needed an eye exam for this benefit year and thought why not get some frames too. The eye exam was quick and the optometrist was older, appeared experienced and nice. I expected this part to be quick because my vision has not changed much in my contacts or eyewear. After the exam, I was escorted to view and try on frames from another staff member, Lynnay (sp?). I shared with her the style and brands I was going for. We checked out Dear Emery but the ones I wanted was sold out. So then we tried on my 2nd choice, Cazal. Cazal is super hard to find in stores in the area because they are exclusive and not many stores have partnership with a distributor for the Germany-based brand. Their frames are very eclectic, edgy and statement pieces. I found one I wanted after trying a few pairs and began my ordering process. I chose the frame and the transition lens. They were very costly even after going through insurance with a balance of around $1200 left. Now this is where my experience went downhill. I received a call a wk later telling me I could come in to pick up new glasses. I arrive and Lynnay took the glasses out the case and told me to try on. I can't make this up y'all. They really tried to give me glasses that were the used/on display glasses with the inside serial number and brand name gone from people trying on. I immediately told her how dare they try to sell me this used frame and new lens. She said well they are clean because they sanitize every pair after try on. Y'all!!! If I wanted Goodwill, China would have went to Goodwill. Fast forward. I was very firm in they either get this mess straight and order new or refund me my money. She jumped on the phone and called her manager Lolita and explained what happened. I did not receive an apology or anything which leads me to believe they sadly do this to customers on a regular. And the customers just don't know SMH. I've worn glasses and contacts for the past 30 yrs and never been sold a used floor frame. Now why would I do that and essentially be paying $1200 for just a lens? I could have somebody on the street make that! I called Lolita the next day to provide feedback on the situation and of course she replied in a passive aggressive way which I expected. Brushing it under the rug, talking over me and so insincere in her tone and response. The "new" and correct glasses finally arrived after an additional 2 wks. I should have expected nothing less. It is in Iverson Mall. The snickerdoodle shop will give you more quality and service than them. Get your luxury glasses elsewhere. Trust me.

Purchasing a pair of frames shouldn't be a chore; it should be as exciting and as exhilarating as shopping at the mall. Let's face it (pardon the pun), there's something magical about finding that one spot where you known for a fact that you're gonna find exactly what you're looking for. The hard part is just finding it! I admit that I am one of those guys who takes a half century to make a decision, especially with eyewear. I'm wearing plastic frames on my face for 18 hours a day; you'd best believe I'm making sure that I look absolutely dapper. The problem that I have when going to other eyeglass places is the lack of virtues that make my experience...flawed. For one, patience. Ever feel rushed when choosing frames? Do you find yourself settling because you just want to find something and get the heck out of there? Were you happy with your purchase? Me neither. Another virtue, honesty. I'm a typical dandy. I need frames that compliment me without being distracting. I need the employees to be honest with me when I ask: "Does this look fine?" I don't want to hear: "All of them look good on you." It's okay to be real with me. It won't hurt my feelings. It shows that you care and that you're professional about it, too. Those virtues I found at Sterling Optical. Now, let's be truthful: I am gushing over this business because it's the first time I've been treated like family and not like a customer, you know what I mean? I was in that shop for maybe an hour looking for the perfect frames, and the employees were so patient with me, even assisting with making selections. Special shout out to Lewis for his patience ("I'm not going anywhere") and Moreland for his honesty ("Do you want to look basic or do you want to look fabulous?"). The owner is. A. Treasure! Seriously, her professionalism and attitude should be an example for all business owners. She was very welcoming and possessed a wealth of knowledge about what "works." I appreciate the graciousness that she afforded me and pretty much made me feel comfortable during the whole visit. Very impressed! TL;DR - yes, I highly recommend this institution and it is deserving of a "dandy-approved" sticker!

I did not have an appointment nor see the doctor; but there is something to be said about a person who will help out of the goodness of their heart. The office was clean and quite nice with added artwork, and the selection of glasses was impressive. I don't usually do Yelp reviews but I really wanted the reviewing world to know what a kind thing the personnel did for me and suggest it for anyone looking for an optometrist in Upper Marlboro. Thanks again to the young lady working the desk today (2/5/16), you were such a blessing and did not make the process difficult.

I highly recommend Dr. Gordon Byrnes at the Retina Group of Washington…read more Large floaters appeared in both eyes after laser cataract surgery that inserted special lenses, apparently a common side effect. I waited a few months to see if they would go away naturally, as recommended by my Ophthalmologist. When I learned two weeks before a scheduled appointment that the doctor I was referred to by my Ophthalmologist is not in my insurance network, I needed to find another Retina Specialist. Dr. Byrnes had a large number of 5-Star reviews on Healthgrades and Google, more than most of the other Specialists in my insurance network, and his office was not that far from my house. I was able to make an appointment through their website for two weeks from that day. The entire staff from the front desk to the Technicians (sorry, I do not know who may be a Nurse, Aid, or Tech) is very courteous and professional. Wait times are more than reasonable. Dr. Byrnes is patient and listens. He said the procedure needed to remove the floaters, a Vitrectomy, is a fairly simple procedure that takes about 10 minutes. He did point out that he does not charge an additional fee for this procedure as many doctors do. As a matter of fact, the other Retina Specialist I was scheduled to see would have charged an additional fee not covered by insurance of at least $500 per eye. So I will end up saving over $1,000 for both eyes. My left eye had fewer floaters than my right so I chose to have the Vitrectomy on my left eye first. The surgery went very well, the floaters were completely gone. I will at some point schedule to have the Vitrectomy on my right eye with Dr. Byrnes. I also told Dr. Byrnes that I had been having discomfort in both eyes for several years, much worse in the left eye. Most of the time the discomfort was more of an annoyance or distraction, but would sometimes increase from a dull ache to a throbbing ache to pain later at night. It felt like a muscular pain behind my eye or the entire eyeball. I would sometimes get up at night and take two Aleve, but I was not sure if the Aleve helped or if the pain just stopped on its own. Dr. Byrnes said it could be Dry Eye. When I told him my left eye waters a lot which I always thought meant I did not have Dry Eye, he said that actually is one indication of the disease. He recommended specific over-the-counter eye drops. I woke one morning with both eyes feeling very uncomfortable so tried the drops. Immediately, or after perhaps 1-2 minutes max, the discomfort was completely gone and lasted 13 hours. I used the drops twice a day in both eyes for two days, and an additional day in the left eye. Have not had to apply any the last two days in either eye. What a difference. I now keep a few vials in my purse just in case.

Dr. Byrnes himself is professional and pleasant, but the support staff is another story. I had a…read more1:15 appointment, arrived at 1:00 and sat there until 1:15, when they called me to fill out paperwork that they could have given me when I first arrived. The receptionist was borderline rude and certainly indifferent when I pointed this out. I then waited another 45 minutes to be seen by a technician, who performed various tests and who asked me the same questions I had just finished answering in writing. I then waited yet another 30 minutes to see the doctor. All in all, I was there over 2 hours!

I insisted I didn't mind if they were damaged in the process and she did end up adjusting them. Funny thing is I have gotten sunglasses here before first and last time with that attitude.
