The BJCC is a nice venue. The magic city classic is happening in the city . The BJCC is hosting a luncheon. The event space is nice and service is good.

I have seen a few concerts now, the majority of them have been awesome! This time we were here to see Tool.. it was extremely loud.. so loud it was hard to make out the lead singer. To make sure it was not me, I checked with a friend who was down on the floor.. he said the same.. the music was drowning out the lead singer... so it was not our seats that were the issue, although our seats I thought were awesome as we could see Maynard the whole concert! Now I will let you in on a little secrete, they have an arena club you pay extra but you get a separate entrance, private bathrooms, and food for 50 a ticket for our concert... they served pulled port, vegan egg roll type, queso dip with chips, popcorn, lemonade and water... to me it's worth it not to have to fight the crowds to get in plus it puts you in the front of the merch line if you hustle up the stairs.... So next time you attend a concert here check out the arena club to see the cost plus food offered.. well worth it to me.

There's not a bad seat in the place! The entry process was very easy. There were no lines for people with tickets. The facility was clean. With so many breweries in the Birmingham area, I wish they offered craft beers instead of just domestic.

I went to the BJCC Arena for a concert and was glad I purchased premier parking from TicketMaster for $20. The parking lot was directly across from the entrance (yay). The lines for entrance were a bit chaotic and confusing as to where exactly to stand. Doors opened at 6:30 and they started the security lines prior to that. By 6:35, I was in the door. In the seating areas, the floors were sticky and the steps to the various rows were noticeably dirty. I didn't like the fact that some stairs were directly next to my seat. If I moved my leg over a few inches, then it would have touched the dirty stairs. My seat was on the first row of the upper level, so I had an amazing, but scary view of the stage. There wasn't much to stop a person from falling over. Whenever I stood up, I made sure I was cautious and didn't make any sudden moves. I had a pleasant experience overall. Would definitely attend another event here, but choose a different seat.

BBVA Compass Iron City Showdown (Houston Rockets vs Memphis Grizzles)

I've attended several events at the BJCC and all the events have been great!!! However, parking at the last event of the BBVA Compass Iron City Showdown between the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets, I was disappointed in the parking fees. I procrastinated and purchased my tickets at the last minute. So I ended up purchasing tickets at a lower price point. Since that was the case, it was no way I was going to pay $20, $10, or even $8 to park. Even if I purchased higher end tickets, I don't think it's fair to park my car on the same price level. I considered it for safety reasons and being comfortable and drove around 3 times before deciding to park farther away and walk. If an event says that you can purchase tickets for as low as $15, why is parking as high as $20. It doesn't add up to me. Once again, I enjoyed the game and hope that with such a large turnout it shows that people are interested and will definitely support. I hope Birmingham will be able to bring even more events to the area!!!

After writing a review for Legacy Arena last night, I figured it would be good to do a review for the whole BJCC. My most recent visit was to the Concert Hall. But there is not page for that YET... if you didn't know, you can add businesses to Yelp that aren't there. This is a perfect example of what needs to be added. But I can address the complex as a whole. You can definitely tell that it was built in the 70s. Just like Legacy Arena, it could use some very expensive updating. I'm not sure how much of the complex they are updating. But pretty much everything needs it. The complex itself is huge. And I have never had a problem finding a parking space if I am willing to pay for it. It will be interesting to see how that might change with the new stadium. Overall it is good, but not great. An A-ok venue.

Waiting for Jason Mraz & Toca Rivera's concert to start.

Our first Jason Mraz concert in the Concert Hall. It's small, but it's fine. The price ticket was reasonable. I think the seats in the front of the 2nd or 3rd level balcony would had been fine also.

Great place to go for a weekend of entertainment or education. A few friends and I decided to attend the Home and Garden show, and boy was it amazing. There were a good volume of home improvement vendors for all things home. Friendly, warm and highly informative. I will be sure to attend on next year.

Left side of waiting area before the concert started. Not very much seating outside.

Absolutely ridiculous bag rules, where if it's 1 inch over 5 x 7 they make you walk all the way back out and put in your car. Awful policy

A friendly bartender at Up-Down Arcade Bar (another must-visit!) told us about this place, mentioning it's one of the few bars open 24 hours on the weekend. Naturally, curiosity won. From the jump, this place had character. There's a bouncer at the door, a makeshift elevated DJ booth to the right where you have to pay cash for a "membership." Don't worry -- there's an ATM conveniently behind the booth, ready to charge you a nice little convenience fee if you didn't bring cash. The membership lasts a year, but still, that was a first for me. Inside? Small. Crowded. Lively. And at 1 AM, there was a guy passed out in a chair right by the entrance -- with his dog roaming freely around the bar. I honestly couldn't make this up if I tried. The bartenders were solid -- fast, cool, and trying their best to keep up with the rush. There's a selection of local beers (pretty good ones too) and two pool tables... well, technically one, since they only had one cue ball. The pool sticks? Ancient relics. The bathroom? I'll spare you the visuals. Outside was much more breathable. There was a local guy named Walter -- from Georgia, of all places -- selling BBQ. Cool dude. The turkey wing was a little tough, but his attitude made up for it. Now, the real highlights? The people and the atmosphere. You've got folks eavesdropping on your conversations, tossing around racially backed jokes at me (that I politely corrected), a row of chain-smokers out front, and a woman openly asking for cigarettes or change that may have been homeless, but was definitely a crackhead and she so eloquently vocalized. It's a gritty and downright raw type of place, but somehow, it works. There wasn't any live music when we came, but I'm sure that's what makes this place shine more than it already does in its own unique way. I'll definitely be back for a performance night. Bottom line: Five stars because The Nick is exactly what it's supposed to be -- an unfiltered slice of Birmingham nightlife that refuses to apologize for being itself.

Here's why I say all of those glowing things: This room is tall, but small in square feet. There are bookshelves that align the walls. At times, the ticket prices might be steep, but it's worth it. It means you get to see one of your favorite acts in an intimate venue with people that care. Yes we have plenty of places to see rock shows and indie shows but a true listening room where music is front and center and not the whole "hey look at me I'm at this show and you're not" thing we just don't have. I'm rambling because it's hard to convey the excitement I have for this place. It's the type of room that you can go to and the artist doesn't even have to be mic'd up for it to sound amazing. From what I understand a bar area is coming and there are more renovations to be done in the space but really the aesthetics don't matter when it comes to this place. It simply is a place to go and listen to music without distraction. Get there as soon as you can.

Made the decision to turn in and try Sanctuary; how fortuitous! First, this isn't just a music venue! We've eaten here before and have been wanting to make it back, but between their popularity and our schedules, it's felt like trying to line up a dentist appointment during tax season. Tonight, though, everything finally clicked. We got there early and were greeted by two cheerful hostesses who promptly sat us in the corner... felt a little like we were back in kindergarten for talking too much, but we made it work. Oh--and if you're into live music during dinner, this place delivers. There's something about enjoying a good meal with live music in the background that just elevates the whole experience. It's also the kind of setting where local artists get their start, and you never know--you might be listening to someone on their way up. Once our waiter came over, we held off ordering while waiting on our "fashionably late" friends--who, for the record, treat arrival times more like loose suggestions. Eventually, the crew assembled and it was game on. I kept it simple to start: water, no lemon. Let's not contaminate perfectly good H2O--I want it 100 proof. For appetizers, we ordered the Fried Cauliflower and Fried Okra to share. And by "share," I mean I ordered them and then immediately abandoned that concept. Only child tendencies die hard. Both dishes were excellent. The fried okra, paired with their Creole ranch, absolutely stole the show--seriously, that sauce deserves its own fan club. The cauliflower was also very good, and the homemade remoulade held its own... just not quite on the Creole ranch level. Our friends ordered the Street Corn Dip, and while I didn't personally get any (again... sharing isn't my spiritual gift), I can confirm it was outstanding based on the fact that the dish came back cleaner than a whistle. One of the coolest parts of this place is the atmosphere. The building still carries that old church feel--you can almost picture folks sitting in pews listening to a sermon. These days, though, the only preaching happening is coming from the kitchen, and there's a "sinful" bar running along one wall that probably wouldn't have made the original blueprints. For the main course, my wife went with the Lobster Mac and Cheese, and I ordered the Chili Lime Shrimp. The mac and cheese was a solid choice--rich and flavorful--but just a touch on the dry side. A little more cream would take it to the next level... perfect, but not Jesus-walking-on-water perfect. The shrimp, on the other hand, was good but didn't quite live up to expectations. It started strong but didn't finish the game, and I ended up handing off the last few bites like a reliever coming out of the bullpen. All in all, The Sanctuary on 25th is a great addition to the Tuscaloosa food scene. Between the unique setting, strong appetizers, live music, and overall experience, it's definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared--it stays busy, and if you plan on sharing food, make sure you're sitting with better people than I am.
