I finally made my first trip to Sidewalk Cinema for the Summer of Spike series and saw "Do the Right Thing". It was such a great experience from the moment I walked in. The lobby is incredibly inviting--I even noticed someone relaxing at a table, coloring, which perfectly captured the laid-back, community feel of the space. Having a bar in the lobby was a nice touch too, making it easy to grab a drink before the movie. The theater has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for enjoying classic and independent films on the big screen. Seeing "Do the Right Thing" in a theater setting reminded me of the genius Spike Lee is!! I'll definitely be back for more screenings. read more

I absolutely love Sidewalk Cinema! My guy and I enjoyed a showing of the movie "Love and Basketball" as part of a special tribute to director Gina Prince Bythewood during Women's History Month. I love the roomy seats and the no frills online ticket sales. There's so much to do here besides viewing the movies. You can play games, both board games and computer games, you can sip on cocktails and chat, or enjoy the themed nights offered throughout the year. I love this place so much that I may become a member! I encourage the city to please support this independent cinema. It's a nice space that we want to keep around for a very long time. read more

Sidewalk is still one of my favorite venues in Birmingham, Al! It's so cool & intimate. I l Iove it so much! I was recently here to watch as Goes The South. It made me appreciate my city that much more. The concessions and bar are outstanding! Staff super amazing! You definitely leave here fulfilled and wanting more. My son discovered this spot while watching a film for one of his UAB course assignments. He immediately sent me photos (I currently reside in NC) to share what a cool place it was. It's a non profit, independent theatre that features some of the more mainstream movies as well as lots of independent films. While visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday, we went to watch a movie. I absolutely loved the "underground" theatre! It's so beautiful and chic, even when it's not decorated beautifully for the upcoming Christmas holiday. All of the staff were great and accommodating. I inquired about a coffee at the snack bar (at 8:30pm) and they brewed a fresh pot for me! Now, the itty bitty coffee cups (by my standards) were a bit of a disappointment, but that speaks more to my caffeine use disorder more than anything! lol Unlike many of your standard theatres, this one offers alcoholic drinks as well. The theatre is really beautiful and in good repair. It's also clean, which I appreciated. I am about to move to Birmingham and this will be a place I frequent! read more

I really enjoyed the 2024 Yelpies event! It was great seeing all of my fellow Yelpers and meeting some potential future Yelpers. I am glad the event was at Sidewalk. I literally haven't been since it opened a few years ago and shame on me! The Sidewalk cinema is an awesome building that includes movie theaters that are a nice size. They also have tons of events that you can attend (karaoke peeked my interest) and I also found out that you can rent out the entire building and/or different parts of the building, for example the main bar area. Everything about this event was great...from the drinks, to the popcorn, to the charcuterie boxes, what an awesome time was had. Last but not least, congrats to all of the nominees and the winners! Oh, how I love the Sidewalk film cinema! I've spent many a nights here whether it was to watch a film, hear people talk about their tests and triumphs, or learn from an industry panel. The cinema is located underneath the Pizitz food hall and shows some big box office bangers and independent films. I love that the space is also used as a hub and teaching space for creatives, a lot of their events include some type of educational component, but they never slack on the fun. I was fortunate enough to record the first season of my podcast here and it was such a blast. I'm also a fan of bad movie night and F-Up nights. There's a bar on site that usually mixes up a specialty drink for whatever occasion they're hosting. There's also snacks like pretzels, hotdogs, and candy available. Shoutout to whoever does their decor! It's always so intricate. If you haven't been yet you should definitely stop by and catch a show, especially during the film festival. read more

OMG! Sidewalk, it is official. Yelp, you are my favorite hidden gem to date. I did not know you were here! We are a party of nine that decided to see The Color Purple on a whim. Fortunately, it was showing here. I love EVERYTHING about you. You are streamlined with about 3 movies showing tops. You have the coolest lounges ever, East and west. and the Photo Booth upon entry. You definitely thought about everything and everybody. I love the small library with books to browse why you wait. And, you have an upscale bar service too. But, everybody knows I am here for what, The popcorn! I love it, yours is good and reasonably priced with tons of seasoning selections. Y'all already know I'm impressed. I was finally able to catch a movie here and I must say the vibe here is great. I enjoyed all of the aesthetics of the theater. The staff here is welcoming and friendly. This cinema is perhaps the most frequently overlooked and underrated destination by most Birmingham travel guides. We stumbled on it by accident and sooooo glad we did! It's $10/ticket - even on Saturday nights - to watch indie films not yet picked up and distributed by major movie studios. We were lucky enough to stumble on SIDEWALK, enjoy browsing their extensive movie library while chilling with drink and enjoying the vibe. The theatres hold about 50 people, but seats comfortable and the very clean. Enjoying a wine or a beer is cool and the staff is very into movies and eager to share what they know. Highly recommend SIDEWALK. Do NOT miss it if you are a moviephile! read more

We attended the showing of the Snowman as a fun activity for Christmas break. They offered this show for free which was great. The sidewalk cinema is a hidden gem in Birmingham! Love the festive environment when you arrive with scenes for pictures, light wall, and of course concession stands. The theatres are not very large but intimate. Also a plus with the bar available for drinks. Service was good and they made you feel comfortable. I plan to catch more movies in the future. read more

This place is an original in Birmingham. It's a movie theater that plays documentaries and independent movies. You can get drinks and gluten-free food as well as other offerings. It's very colorful and there is a lot of seating or you can just hang out. There are boardgames and artsy books. The theaters are nice and small, which I like. You can bring your drinks in with you and the seats are very comfortable and roomy. They have excellent mixed drinks! read more

One of the best places in town to be sure -- the Pizitz basement. Best known for their film festival, the theater is great. A really good bar and concession stand. The documentaries are really well curated. It is worth taking a flyer and seeing something you wouldn't normally watch. They also have special events with discussion panels and other events, so get on their mailing list. read more

This is my favorite type of movie theater... indie, nerdie, and intimate. Came here for a free screening of a random "really bad" movie and it was so much fun. They included a movie bingo to play along with and I actually thought the movie was decent. The concessions and drink options also seemed pretty good. I hope that they will be able to hold on through the pandemic because I really want to be able to visit again and think its location in the Pizitz is perfect. Plus, it sounded like they had a lot of fun events and programming in the works. read more
