Esther's Cakes N Sweets opened up around May 2023 in the space that used to be Casa Balzano (inside…read morea medical/office building). I went in to take a look and ended up buying a salted caramel brownie ($3.25) and a pink cookie with white chocolate chips ($3.65). When you buy anything pink in the shop, 20% of the sales go to Breast Cancer Research (not sure if this is just for the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness month) or for always). The salted caramel brownie was phenomenal! So rich and buttery and filled with gooey salted caramel and chocolate chips. The cookie was good too, nice and chewy with lots of white chocolate chips, but the salted caramel brownie stole the show, for sure! Everything is baked by them, it is not one of those shops that buys stuff from Costco and resells them, lol, like some other shops in medical buildings. I was served by Esther herself, who is beyond lovely. She told me they recently opened 5 months ago and she's really trying to get the cafe more exposure through social media. She noticed my purse and told me she has the exact same one and brought hers out to show me. Immediately I knew this woman has good taste, lol. The cafe is super cute with a few seats to eat in. It's not too visible from the street, so just look for the medical/office building next to the Westgate Shopping Centre. There's free parking along the front of the building. The parking lot is actually quite large, but many spots are reserved for permit holders, so just look out for the signage. Esther's Cakes N Sweets is a gem. I'm looking forward to trying out other items.

5 stars for the service alone!…read more It's been awhile since I've been here, but I was in the area and wanted to stop by. They were robbed twice earlier this year, with the owner, Yan, being alone both times. His hand was even in a cast after trying to stop them :'( I heard he was such a kind man, too, and often donates food to the community for people in need. Just the kind of business I try to support! I picked up a matcha cookie, brownie, and a slice of almond tart. They were on the table in the middle of the room, already individually wrapped in plastic wrap for quick and easy grab and go. The matcha cookie was on the dry side, but I liked the flavour because it wasn't too bitter or powdery like some other matcha products I've had. The brownie was great, moist and just the right amount of chocolatey goodness. I really enjoyed the almond tart - not too sweet, with a smooth, creamy texture on the bottom and the crunchy almond slices on top. I was lucky enough to meet Yan (I believe he works the counter every day, which is amazing) and he was the only one there. We were both wearing masks, but you could see he had a big smile - smiling eyes! He really is super sweet! Very patient with me as I perused, soft spoken, polite, and kind. To be honest, I didn't pay attention to how much it cost me. Whatever was left I gave as a tip, but he wouldn't let me leave without taking an extra peanut butter cookie. It was fresh, a little crispier on the outside and sticker on the inside. They were just cooling behind the counter and hadn't been put out yet. I was going to save it for my husband but had to take a bite of the fresh cookie.. and then ended up eating half. He still got half, right? They have a bunch of other baked goods and pastries, including some treats in the fridge. Will definitely be back to try some more, but above all, to see Yan again! You can tell he's grateful and happy when you make a purchase, but I was definitely more grateful for his smiles and service.

Overall the baked treats were good, but I found them a bit pricey for what they were. However, they…read moreare on Elgin Street and we are in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, so I need to remember not to compare it to all the places in Toronto where I would get my deals during better times. Truth be told, I did not buy the baked goods for myself, I promised my husband that I would treat him to some snacks for accompanying me to sketchy parts of town to run some errands, lol. So I got the items for him ;) He picked out a Chocolate Banana Croissant ($3.50) and a Chocolate Cheesecake ($3.75). The Chocolate Cheesecake was tiny for the price. It was in a small paper muffin liner, and was shorter than the liner. Like it was literally one-and-a-half bites. I didn't have any, because it was so tiny. The hubster said it was good, but it tasted like it either hadn't set yet or was undercooked as it was still runny. The Chocolate Banana Croissant was much better in my opinion and it was a normal size. It was a croissant with real bananas inside and then covered in chocolate. I had a bite and I liked it. They also sell savoury items like ham and cheese croissants, but they ran out when we were there, which disappointed me because I wanted something savoury. Staff were very friendly and courteous. I like supporting small independent businesses, especially during this time (Covid-19 Pandemic), so if I find myself in the area, I will likely pop in to see if they have any savoury items left, or I will try another sweet item. The bakery is on Elgin, so street parking only.

The cakes and muffins are moist and tasty, but on the oily/greasy side and very sweet. The cookies are also tasty, but very rich and full of butter, and also very sweet. I know that "real baking" is full of sugar and fat, and this is how most people like it, but I personally prefer reduced-fat and reduced-sugar baking, lol. That being said, I can still appreciate full-fat and full-sugar baked goods, haha. They are a nut-free bakery, so if you are allergic to nuts, you need not worry about eating items here. And their (nut-free) carrot cake is really good! If I recall correctly, they put pineapple in it, yum! I didn't even miss the walnuts. The bakery is pretty and they have lots of ready to go cakes so you can pick one up last minute if you have to. Obviously you can also pre-order if you want something specific, but they do have a good selection of readymade cakes. Staff are friendly. Street parking only.
