Is a go to spot for us when we're in the area visiting our niece! They have one of my favorite mochas. They make their own almond milk and the drinks are consistently delicious. Was in NYC for the holidays and stopped by to get some hot chocolate and reprieve from the cold and rain. Cozy shop inside, few stools seated where you can relax. Bathroom was clean. Got two large hot chocolates, and they tasted kinda watered down/overly milky--really wasn't chocolaty at all. Unfortunately, I gotta say that Swiss-Miss instant mix would probably have more chocolate. If I do try this place again, I'll go for the coffee instead. read more

I love ice cream, and this coffee shop is the closest place to my apartment where I can get ice cream. It's also strategically located half a block from Ft. Greene Park, which makes this little coffee shop even more attractive. Prices are great: 2 scoops are $4.50, and a kid scoop is $2.50. I tried the Bittersweet chocolate and Jamaican grapenut. The Bittersweet chocolate is not bitter at all, and I think Bittersweet solely refers to the name of the place. The Jamaican Grapenut was not what I expected[1], but the granola-like pieces present in the ice cream were not overwhelming. What I liked most about this ice cream was its consistency: dense and creamy, it keeps very well in the summer heat. It is, however, extremely rich. Waaaaay too rich for my taste. So rich that you can just eat two scoops (kid scoops are probably going to be enough), wash them down with a beer, and call it a night. Lines are too long for what they offer and the staff are not the nicest. Don't get snippy with me cause you don't have anything that's on your menu! We got a mocha donut after they didn't have anything else that we wanted. It was good, which was lucky for them. The coffee wasn't anything spectacular and I didn't see much else in their pastries that looked like I would come back. Also, you have to play twister with complete strangers if you want to add cream or milk to your coffee. The set up of the place was tight and uncomfortable for people to get in and out of. Bittersweet is quite simply the best coffee spot in Fort Greene. The homemade almond milk is so delicious it ruined me for any other almond milk. The cinnamon rolls and cheddar scones are mind-altering and a very indulgent treat on a Saturday or Sunday morning. There is always a line but it goes very quickly. Best chai latté in Fort Greene! All of their pastries are solid, but the cinnamon roll is extra. Don't be discouraged by the long line; they do a great job of moving through it quickly. This cafe is walking distance from the fort Greene park. It's not a big cafe at all but it's cute. Pastries and snacks looked really good..I'll definitely try to pick up something next time I come. This isn't a cafe where you can sit and relax, but luckily the park is so close. When I was in Brooklyn Tech, this was my go to spot when I wanted to treat myself. I'm not sure if they still have these, but the hangover cure sandwiches were so good. I literally dreamt about them. Really good blackberry scones- crispy and crunchy on the outside, buttery soft on the inside. I saw people lined up to get coffee after visit the park so wanted to see what the hype was about and def lives up to it! Came here on a recent trip to NYC...on my last day I had to hit good ol BK! I looked up a coffee shop on my phone and my friend pulled this spot up. It was close to the park and university and lots of activity all around this area. The place is pretty small so I'm sure many ppl just grab a drink and go, but we decided to sit at the end bar. I had an Iced Mocha and my friend had the dirty Chai. Both of us enjoyed our drinks and the guy at the counter was pretty chill. You know how something will happen and then you think of a come back 10 minutes too late? That's exactly how I feel right now and it's eating me up inside. This place is alright. coffee is generally good, kind of slow service, especially in the mornings, and it's slightly inconvenient that they're cash only. As I wait for my cappuccino this morning, the barista tries to give me a latte (he called it out as a latte). Me: is this a latte or a cappuccino? Barista: we make them the same here Me: (dumbfounded) What self respecting barista would say that? After looking at my cup and realizing the handwriting was a bit misleading, I realized he thought it said latte so he just LIED to me instead of admitting he made the wrong drink. Am I upset I got the wrong drink? Yes. Nestled a block away from Fort Greene park is this tiny, TINY coffee shop. They brew La Colombe, an excellent choice, and they brew it well. Their espressos are also top notch. A fine assortment of mini baguette vegetarian sandwiches, pastries and DOUGH doughnuts are also available. Get a coffee and a doughnut from this place, pet adorable dogs while you wait in line. Bittersweet can be both bitter...or sweet... depending on the day. It's a tiny little nook that can be perfect to hide away on a day of raindrops or snow flurries, but can easily fill up. This is my favorite coffee place in ft.greene/clinton hill and for such a little neighborhood there are a bunch of coffee shops around so for them to stand out is something. What they do best: Amazing & perfect soy lattes, amazingly delicious jamaican grapenut ice cream, if you are a late riser- 1/2 price oh so authentic french/irish/english/american pasteries (is it after 3pm?) and really nice people behind the counter. As for the hang out factor: I actually never hang out or work here because I am always on the way somewhere but there is a good amount of seating inside for such little place. They are also really good at serving a bunch of people quickly which I can't say is the case at other places... many of which often seem to be working at snail speed. read more

Cute little place in the Fort. I went on a Sunday morning for a latte and a chocolate croissant -- very good. It was a little too chilly for me to try the HOMEMADE ice cream -- next time, I promise ;-) If you want to go in for a coffee on the weekend, go before 9:30. After that, it's starts to get a little busy, and a little loud. I work close to Bittersweet and it is lifesaver for my coworkers and I. Most of us venture there a few times a week, while some of us make daily trips! It's a tiny little coffee shop with a handful of barstool seats in the rear. They have all sorts of coffees and teas, in addition to some incredible lemonade and hot chocolate! The croissants (chocolate, veggie, ham/cheese, and regular) are fresh and will make you feel as though you're in a cafe in France. I'm also a fan of the chocolate chip cookies (big and small sizes...always go for the big one!). Sometimes they are a little harder than I'd like depending on who's baking that day, but 10 seconds in the microwave will remedy this for you! Love this place! The coffee is tasty, the wide range of baked goods are delicious, it's clean, good music is always playing, and the staff are super-sweet. Other commenters are correct that it's not inexpensive; you will spend anywhere fro $4 to $10 depending on what you buy. However, it's a local business owned and staffed by people who live nearby, so I feel much better that my money goes here instead of national companies Starbucks or Dunkin'. Shop local, people! The owners are very principled people. You get a discount if you bring your own mug; the shop has also transitioned to using paper straws to cut back on single-use plastics. Lastly: Don't worry about the long lines out front -- the cashier/baristas have a great communication structure going and the line moves quite fast. After he got his coffee, I approached to the counter and the cashier literally treated me like a child who did something wrong and shouted "The line is over there!!" I used to live around the corner from Bittersweet. When I was too lazy / late to make coffee in the morning, I'd pick one up there. I'm a fan of this place because it's less imperialistic than a certain coffee shop located around the corner that will remain nameless. When I pop in for a coffee here, it's usually in the warmer months and thus I opt for the iced americano. You see, Bittersweet makes no "traditional" iced coffee, and your barista will always announce that they serve only iced americanos before making sure that this is "ok" with you...how very conscientious. It was a little weak in the early days, but these iced americanos have improved dramatically in both strength and quality over the years. Bittersweet also provides a neighborhood outlet for fresh bread and pastries imported from Manhattan's Balthazar Bakery. I really wish more places would do this...it's so helpful to pop in somewhere close to home and pick up some bread rather than having to truck it with you on the subway. They even lower their prices on baked goods at the end of the day to move the leftover stuff. Like I said before, very conscientious. The place is a little too small to hang out in, but I've never liked hanging out in coffee shops anyway. Besides, Fort Greene Park is only steps away.
